So basically I'm trying to understand how the system chooses what modem configuration file to use.
I deconstructed the modem file with unsin and found that there is modem configuration files for my carrier in the phone but it's not using it.
So my question is how does the phone select the configuration file? Does the network provider instruct the phone when the sim is installed?
I'm with Telstra network but the phone is just using a generic modem configuration.
Sorry if these questions sound stupid but I have looked and looked everywhere else for answers and I can't find them.
Cheers, Ben
Curious, what country are you in?
I'm in Australia.
Cheers, Ben

To those who are flashing firmware,
May I know what does the CSC file do? I notice I can flash the firmware CODE and MODEM file with different CSC, looks like my phone is still working.
And different CSC are different in size.
Any idea?

CSC is the Country/Carrier Specific Code (not sure exactly which it is, both kinda make sense). It contains the files for customisation for specific networks, so will have the APN settings, maybe custom ringtones or backgrounds, and can have programs too. Some CSC files contain a lot more than others, hence the file size differences.
Mixing different PDA/PHONE/CSC files is certainly possible, although it might be best not to stray too far on the PDA and PHONE side. The CSC isn't really very important in most cases - at worst you'll probably just have to set up the APN manually.

Thanks for that definition. I am new to Android and very new to Rooting so have been trying to find out why I can't do a backup and the CSC file was a definition I was struggling to find using Google. Just need to find out what XUE is now as Google just tells me it it a Chinese name!.
Thanks again,

XEU is just the csc code for Europe.
Different regions have different codes.
will flashing a european pda and modem with asian csc do harm to the phone?
Nope no harm...
Thanks for the reply. Does that hold true even if the csc is taken from a froyo firmware? Just wanna be sure prior to flashing so i'm asking.

Just to be sure. Csc from asia froyo and pda from gb euro

Will I lose my warranty if I flash with another CSC? I would like to flash to something better, I've found my stock PDA and PHONE files to download but CSC is unavailable ( CSC:I9000GCROJV7). Or Can I somehow extract CSC from my phone to computer?
Of course flashing the phone with Odin makes you lose the warranty on the phone, but sometimes Service Centre don't mind on that if there is a hardware issue. I advise you to read carefully guides before starting any operation
Can anyone explain what a Multi-CSC is (in terms of files) ? Can there be many types of Multi-CSCs also I mean, one Multi-CSCs that covers a certain geography/market & another CSC that covers another geography/market ?
I know I'm 2 months behind on my reply, but your question has been *partially* answered.
CSC stands for "Consumer Software Customization" and can cause loss of service if it is set wrong. In the US, there are both GSM and CDMA networks and are carrier specific. The radio channels are also carrier specific, so there might even be a differemt CSC between commercial and corporate users. Flashing a CSC for AT&T on a Verizon branded phone will (more than likely) break the functionality of LTE capability, calling, text messages, and data usage.
I flashed an outdated ROM on my Note 3 last year and I couldn't access my carrier network until I flashed back to JasmineROM.
Long story short, unless you are changing carrier networks and have a carrier branded phone, it's probably wise not to mess with it. Unlocked SIM card users (NOT unlocked bootloader or rooted; completely different) may get away with flashing the international firmware, but I don't know for sure.

The two most common causes for 'no network' after a new wrong are :
1)no APN configured
2) wrong baseband file/ config
The APN you can check in your network settings. The baseband files can be set from an OpenRecovery like Androidiani. You could also flash a carrier/country specific update.zip. many are available in the forums.
I am sorry if you have already checked these 2 things. Your post does not mention them and they are, by far, the most common question asked after flashing a customer ROM.

Which modem file should I choose when installing the Overcome ROM? the info for my PDA and Phone both start with P1000, I'm thinking I should choose the JMF Modem but what if I choose to go with a carrier eventually and I want to use AT&T will this modem effect it? and can I choose the AT&T modem file which would be the JK3 Modem or would that brick my tab? please, I would greatly appreciate any one who could answer me back quickly I'm trying to flash this ROM as im typing this have ODIN ready to go and just waiting to see what my best bet is with these Modem files. thank you
JMF modem works well with almost all carriers including AT&T. Only T mobile US is problematic. If you have signal or data transfer issues or the jk3 works better for you then flash it.
Hello
Recently unlocked my gt-s5830 by getting the unlock code from the blm5 image
Unfortunately my phone now has no signal whenever a sim card is inserted but does when there is no sim?!?
I have tried different network sims and also checked that the imei is correct and isnt blocked
On phone status under service state it says out of service but under mobile network state it says connected
The phone works perfectly apart from the signal problem
When i flashed a vodafone rom it even updated and downloaded vodafone apps the first time i turned it on but still had no signal!?!
I found one person who had a similar problem, albeit on a different phone, who fixed it by flashing different radio images
So now my questions....
Can anybody tell me
How do i tell what radio image im using at mo
What radio image is the best for a samsung galaxy ace gt-s5830 and can i flash this separately or do they come as part of a one package md5
If so which would be best
Is it best to look for a full package instead of a one package
Also if it does come separately or part of a full package what type of image is the radio image classed as by odin (boot phone pda csc efs)
If anyone has any other ideas on how to fix my phone please also let me know!
Many thanks
Matt
Radio image, aka modem you flash with odin to 'phone'.
The one you need depends on your region (america, europe, asia) and sometimes even country.
Browse the forum, searching for modems. You can alao get them from full package for odin.
Remember, each stock firmware that can be flashed with odin is packed with modem files for a particular region.
Good luck.
I have a question I'm hoping an expert can answer. I pretty new to the Android world so I'm trying to wrap my head around a few things..
So I bought a (prepaid/locked) S5830T from a store over here, and proceeded to unlock and upgrade to the latest
stock Gingerbread firmware (2.3.6). So now when I boot up, instead of S5830T, I get S5830. All good.
Now the phone runs fine, but I have an issue with 3G data in particular.
The "T" suffix appears to relate to the 'Telstra network' (which the phone was originally locked to).
According to this link - http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies
Telstra operates on 900Hz / 1800hz for 2G and 850hz / 2100hz for 3G.
The carrier I am on (Optus) operates on 900Hz / 1800hz for 2G and 900hz / 2100hz for 3G.
So I've flash the modem file from the Optus firmware package (Modem_S5830_XWKT3) hoping that that would enable
the 3G band that is currently not working.
(What happens ins 2G/"H" works fine, but when the phone switches to "3G" I lose all data connections)
But Alas, I still have the same problem..
So I'm wondering is there hardware in the phone that is preventing connection to the network, or do I need to find a more
appropriate Modem file that operates on the frequencies above?
Many Thanks!

Can you find the original Telstra firmware, extract the modem from that and flash it?
Can you get hold of a Telstra SIM and see if you still have the same issues?
The T doesn't necessarily signify Telstra but just a slightly different version of the S5830
It's the same with SGS2 there is a GT-i9100 and GT-i9100T (I have the T version purchased in Thailand so nothing to do with Telstra)
Because I have used this phone in Australia also, I've noticed that T modems perform better on my SGS2 than non-T versions.
I've found Optus coverage (in Melbourne) to be pathetic so I always have to ensure I'm using a T modem when I'm there.

Hey, Thanks for the reply ApriliaM3.
Yeah I know the T doesn't necessarily mean Telstra, but was pretty sure it meant there was a different modem to stock (as with your SGS2).
Which is why I reverted back to stock. I thought that may have been more accommodating of all frequencies..
That's very interesting what you say regarding your T modem.
I believe I can extract the modem from my base backup, so will give that a try.
As for the Telstra sim, that might be a little harder, but I'll try the modem first and then try to get a sim.
Thanks for the info!

I get the impression that my requirement for a T modem when I'm in Melbourne has more to do with Optus and their pathetic coverage than it has to do with the modem. When I'm in Thailand, it doesn't seem to matter what modem I use... they all get good signals and I have no problem with data either. I'm also a member on Whirlpool but I rarely go there any more... still it's quite a handy and informative site for many things
