[Q] Rooted, now my phone won't charge?

Before I even rooted my phone, my charger was having issues charging. At the end of the part that goes into the phone, the black cord fell back and the wires are exposed. It's been like this since late March/April. I'd have to mess with angling the phone in order for it to charge, but once it did, it was solid.
I rooted my phone thursday night and put fresh on it. Then yesterday I decided that it wasn't fast enough and I jumped from CM6 to PureHero. All the while it charged, but I still had to mess with it.
Now that I've left it on PureHero (although overall, I still haven't found a satisfactory ROM) my phone won't charge at all. Like, when I finally CAN get the light to glow orange, it'll be stuck at the same percentage. I woke up at like 3 in the morning and discovered this so I kept the battery out for the remainder of the night, woke up and put it back in but it's still stuck at the same percentage. Is it the ROM I'm using? Did I fry my battery somehow? Or is it solely the charger? I want to know before I go and buy a new batter/charger.

Regardless of whether or not you're battery is messed up you need a new usb cable.
Also you can try completely draining your battery then charging it back up to see if that fixes the percentage display problem. I've had boots before where it wouldn't go past 93% even though it was on the charger for well over an hour.

You didn't have a spare USB cable just sittin' around to use instead of a frayed one? Any mini USB cable works

Droid 4 wont charge, just gets very hot

Hi, i have a big problem with my droid 4. I have tried plugging it into 2 different chargers, and it says its charging on the lock screen, but in the battery setting it says its discharging, even when plugged in. The droid also got HOT when it was connected to the charger for a while
What the heck could be wrong

are they moto chargers? could be battery, app
is phone rooted, romed?

nevermind, it charges normally again after leaving it on the charger overnight. not sure what happened but im glad its fixed.

My daughter has the Droid 4, that is completely stock without root, and is having this problem right now. At first I thought the usb port was loose, and it was losing connection while charging. It says it's charging, but doesn't go above certain pecentages. It's all random each time it's plugged in. At first it wouldn't go above 5%, until I used the jumper method.
After I got it past 5%, I turned it on, let it charge by USB for a couple hours, and it wouldn't go past 20%. So I unplugged it, and let it go for a couple days without messing with it. I turned it back on, plugged it in, says it was at 5% again, and let it charge overnight. I got up the next day, it wouldn't even turn on, because it didn't charge at all, and discharged below 5%. Jumpered it again, this time for about 10 minutes, and got it to 60%. The battery never even got warm to the touch either time I jumpered it. I plugged it in today without turning it on, it goes to the phone off charging cylcle like it's supposed to, says it's still at 60%, but the charging animation doesn't show the battery filling up all the way, and then dropping back to 60%. The animation only goes about 5% further, and back to 60%.
This is her second Droid 4, and the first one did this too. I am hoping maybe it's something to do with the Stock ROM, and when JellyBean comes out, it will fix the issue.

The update finally came out for my daughter's Droid 4, and the update went smooth. I was able to keep it at 60% by only turning it on to check for the update. It dropped to 50% while updating.
Still having problems charging while on, or off. While on, it shows it's charging on the battery icon, and it also shows that it's charging in the battery status in settings. While off, it shows the battery charging animation as before. Once in a while it will take a bit of a charge, but not very much. I left it plugged in all night, and woke up to a completely dead phone that would not react to anything, because it's actually discharging while it says it's charging. I had to jumpstart it, let it go for 10 minutes, and it only took a 15% charge. Let it set for a while, and charged it again for a few hours, just to have it stay at 10% the whole time.
I removed everything that didn't come pre-installed, thinking maybe something was running in the background. That had no effect on it at all. Everything to do with data, wifi, and stuff that draws power has all been turned off. While off nothing should be drawing power, and it's still discharging while it says it's charging.
The chage port is a little loose, but the way I set it down the connection stays solid the whole time it's plugged in. I'm figuring something in the hardware is borked, or the battery is toast.
Any ideas anyone?

have you tried a different charger?
if so
i would do a factory reset
you may want to backup contacts, texts, call log… whatever data you want to keep
data on external sd card will be safe, but data on internal storage could get wiped
best to connect to a pc and copy everything on internal storage
pictures are in dcim/camera on internal &/or external sd card

I have tried many chargers, and cables. Stock, Samsung, Duracell, and an old Motorola data/charge cable that needed an adapter. They were all doing the same thing.
I did a complete factory reset, and let it wipe all the internal data. It went back to 4.1.2, but it didn't fix the problem.
I messed with it some more afterwards, and threw the Motorola data/charge cable for my old RAZR V9X on it with the same results. Then I got to thinking, maybe it is a loose port, it's just getting enough contact to say it's charging, and not enough to actually charge the battery. I added some weight to the cable to keep constant, not too much, tension on the cable, and it started charging. Left it overnight, and it finally took a full charge.
Off to Cell Phone Repair Shop, it goes.

My Droid gets VERY VERY hot at times, my phone gets VERY slow and the same thing happens... it doesn't charge up (or takes absolutely forever to charge).
I have a widget called Battery Plus and you can see what uses the most battery and Google Plus is ALWAYS the culprit. I never use G+ (except to backup photos), but every time I go in and see what is using all my battery, its always G+. Its says taht G+ also downloads quite a bit of information onto my phone. Yesterday 10mb, today 2.5mb's or data. What is G+ doing??????

Q: Battery Stats Problem / Percentage Jumps Erratically

Have been loving my Turbo, but yesterday my battery went haywire.
Took my phone off my TYLT Qi charger in the morning, and after 3 hours the phone still listed the battery at 100%. That's with about 40 minutes of screen time.
Turned the phone off and charged it until it was back to 100. After that, the rest of the day was without issue.
Went to bed, put Turbo back on Qi charger, used it in the morning for about 15 minutes and battery was at 77%. Put back on charger, went to 100% in minutes, took it off and within 30 minutes I was back in the 70`s.
Without root I can't calibrate the battery so I'm open to suggestions. Used the same Qi charger on my Droid Maxx without issue.
Scratching my head...

I had some erratic percentage activity just this morning. I also use a TYLT Qi charger. It sat on the charger all night, but when I pulled it off this morning it said 93%. I put it back on the charger and it started jumping back and forth between 93% and 100%. It kept switching between charging and not charging as it was sitting there. I don't think the TYLT charger is to blame, because it always functioned perfectly with my S4. There's definitely something screwy with Qi charging and the turbo.

This started happening to me yesterday. I think the issue started while connected to my car charger. I've used Qi charging most nights and the Turbo charger a few times without issue. My battery died while I was out, I plugged it into my car and the % jumped from 0-20% in about 30 seconds, it then continued to show it charging to 100% after a few minutes. Needless to say, the phone died about 10 minutes later (as it was incorrectly reporting a charge), and ever since then I've been trying to fix this issue. It appears all of my chargers are now charging the phone "too fast", which in turn doesn't let it fully charge and it dies quickly. It's improved so far today, and I've gone so far as to reset my phone to see if the issue persists. I'll report back with my findings.

Contacted Moto for support. After being told I need to manage my battery use and screen brightness (which I think we're all capable of doing) the last resort given was to do a factory reset. I tried to clear the cache in recovery but the phone shut down with a dead battery, I plugged it in, and supposedly it charged to 100% in less than 5 minutes! And that's without the Turbo Charger (heavy sarcasm).
I'll try the reset later, if that doesn't work I'm sending it back. Seems to be a common issue that others are having...

I've been experiencing the erratic readings as well. First, yesterday it stayed at 100% for ~4 hours. Then, after soft reset, dropped to 95% for a few hours. Another soft reset AND wiping cache, went to 89% and appeared to drain "properly". However, when it hit ~15%, it died; I hadn't charged it since the first stuck 100% reading. Immediately upon plugging it into the Turbo charger, it read 100% with current draw/supply at 0mA. I was running ART runtime, so I just switched back to Dalvick. It still reads 100%, but I'm seeing a current supply of >2.4A as if it were charging.
Backing up everything now, going to try a hard reset, and pray it takes. I'm not optimistic. This sucks not having root to figure out what's going on or at least being able to force battery calibration. I'll report back once I'm done...
Update: I reset the phone through recovery, am on Dalvik, and everything appears to be functioning properly. Phone has been charging and discharging as expected. I just tried an app called Advanced Battery Calibrator in an attempt to reset the battery file, so we'll see how that goes.

Same problem here. I use a Tylt exclusively to charge phone and tonight my phone died when it showed 100% charge. Turbo charged it for 10 seconds and then it showed 100%. Turned it back on and it died again a few minutes later. Never did this before and I've had the phone since it was released.

same problem here. and yes, I too use TYLT qi charger (seems to be common among the others experiencing this issue) and occasionally the turbo charger..

Following up, that tip above did seem to correct my battery back to normal (thus far). I drained the battery and then left it on the turbo charger for a few extra hours before turning the phone back on. I did this procedure twice. I have not yet resumed using the tylt qi charger, but ill report back once i know for sure my battery stats are correct, and then try resuming to use my tylt chargers (which are my normal daily chargers at home and the office).

this also solved the problem for me, thank you!!

I use the Tylt charger for overnight charging and had a similar problem yesterday. I noticed that the battery seemed to be discharging at the rate of 10-12% per hour with very light use. By the 7 hour mark off of the charger I was at 2% and the phone shut down a few minutes later. I plugged it in to the turbo charger and I was back to 100% in about 3 minutes. Obviously, the phone died a few minutes later once again. I was planning a trip to the Verizon store to exchange what I thought was a faulty phone, when I found the solution that seemed to work for other people.
1. Plug in turbo charger
2. Press and hold the power key until the phone restarts and shows the correct battery percentage
3. Leave phone on turbo charger and allow it to charge normally
4. Stop using Qi until there's a fix (if they even know about it)
I hope someone's looking into this as I really like my Tylt. I used it for a year with my Maxx with no issues whatsoever.

From what I've read, the wireless chargers may not be the main issue, have you plugged the phone into a usb3.0 port recently? that seems to be the beginnings of troubles for people. I use a qi charger every night and don't have this problem unless I plug into a laptop for some reason.

Well I thought the Qi charger was the issue so I cleared the cache and Turbo charged all night... So this afternoon I was at 70% when I took a picture and soil of a sudden... Dead.
So there goes that theory!!! My XT1254 was fine for months. This all started last weekend. No new apps. No explainable reason. Just that Moto is fail.
This is ridiculous. Why is there no fix? Ready to sell this pos and say goodbye to Failorola.

Nexus 6 No Power No Charge, 3 days after using N Preview

My phones been dead for about a month, most hope was given up but heres my last ditch. I updated to android N preview. Used it like normal. The last day (before my phone ate ****) i was having problems charging it. It wasnt accepting the charge almost as if my "Quickcharge 2.0" had stopped. In fact it would discharge while connected to turbo charger. Anyways that day i went swimming, where i live its very hot i left it on the charger near the pool and it had gotten super hot. So i took it off and put it in a chair and it was on again super hot (hot enough that it burnt my hand when i touched the glass) and it was still on it hadnt shut off. Some people there put it in their cooler for me and that was that, although i noticed a burn mark on the actual usb port on the phone itself. Fast forward a few hours. I was skyping some chick got off skype. Turned my phone off in the hopes it would charge faster. ( it was at 13%) plugged it into the charger, Nothing. Tried to turn it on, Nothing. I finally got it to boot up ( i had to press the **** out of the power button) and the google logo came up. Then it turned off. Tried again to power it on. Same thing, google logo dead. Left it on the wall charger for an hour. tried to power it up, nothing. Used a samsung wireless charger on it for close to 3 hours. Tried to power it up. Still nothing. Power + Vol Down. Nope nada. Opened it up checked the wires everything was plugged in and secure. I didnt make it any further than the backplate because i stripped the screws. Since then its just sat on my shelf, but today i dropped it on my foot and i decieded to see if it would turn on, so i plugged it into my pc (and this is honestly the reason im writing this) and i wiggled the charger around and my pc actually "sensed" it. It said that "The usb device has malfunctioned" so idk what that means. Maybe its still there maybe not. Ik that if i can get my pc to recognize it again it will be difficult as that port on the phone is on its LAST leg.
Let me know what you guys think. Sorry for the short story. Just want to make sure you know everything as it happened
Also when i plug it into the wall, or use the Qi charger on it the device heats up/gets warm. Again dont know if its anything but the more the better.

Could be anything really, possibly a bad battery, if the QI charger isn't helping. How old is the device, and when did the usb burn mark appear?

Okay so I am going to give my best guess here, that the battery in your phone has gone bad, and it was killed by your charger going bad with an electrical short circuit.
Here is my reasons for think that...
Currently your phone won't accept a charge at all, so that leads me to believe that the battery has gone bad.
As for my suspicion that your charger went bad, I have had two different quality brand chargers (HTC and Samsung) go bad on me over the last 3 years or so.
Both times the charger failures caused the same symptoms on my phone that you described...the phone getting extremely hot, and the battery discharging, while connected to the charger, instead of charging.
Luckily for me, in both cases, my phone batteries did not completely croak.
In one case the battery did bulge out the phone, but it was an older HTC M7 and it kept working.
In the other case, I noticed that hot phone and the discharging, and immediately unplugged the charger and tossed it in the trash.
So that is just my two-cents.

What advices do you have to avoid this kind of problem?

Okay guys. I would have to check the IMEI to give you hard facts for the dates. Which I can do im just at work. But last I looked it was manufactured in, March of 2014 or close to that. Ik for a fact that he model was an XT1103 it was completely factory unlocked however my bootloader was locked. Storage was encrypted. And it was the 32gb version. Yes! It could quite possibly be my battery.
Before all this started I was having trouble getting it to charge and I was using a Samsung mini USB with it. But the outlets at the pool I don't think are designed to charge phones. Anyways the burn mark on my USB port showed up the same day. I just didn't notice it (I think) until later that day,but after I got it my phone no longer charged. It would either discharge off the charger, or discharge slower on it.

Sorry for the delay in replying...RF got in the way.
Anyways...I really can't offer much 'technical advice'. I can, however, offer some practical advice.
1. Use brand name chargers or be careful if you do use an off-brand charger.
2. If you are charging your phone (either on a brand name charger or an off-brand charger), and you either feel it getting hot or you see it discharging (or both) immediately unplug your phone and throw away the charger.
3. If you do notice that the battery on your phone is bulging, either replace the battery or if it is a sealed device, replace the phone.
Honestly, that is the only advice I can give.

So guys ive decided i m gonna go ahead and try and replace my battery since its rather inexpensive, im gonna order the parts from ifixit. such as anew midframe and battery. It should be done hopefully by next week. Im still completely open to opinions. When its complete ill make a post.

In my case, i use aukey quick charge 2.0 and it works great, when i charge the phone, i do it on the night and try to not use when it charge, i dont like to charge with scrap chargers, but thanks for the advice, i will take care on that :laugh:

Alright well today my screwdrivers (ordered from china) came i disassembled the phone, havent gotten my battery yet but theres some things i would like to note. The first being that the old battery had alot of corrosion along with its contact to to mobo. ill update when i get the new battery in.

Moto X won't charge past 3%

I have a Moto X 2013 that, after replacing the battery with a supposedly new, OEM battery, refuses to charge past 3%. This phone is rooted and was rom'd with the Nougat xPerience rom, but I tried flashing it with Nougat Lineage as a troubleshooting test.
I replaced the battery last night without incident, and the phone booted and seemed to behave fine, and the battery had about 30% charge. The only issue I found immediately after replacing the battery was a battery app installed on the phone saying the battery hasn't been charged for -19000 hours, or something a long those lines (I can't remember exactly what it said, as I did not install the app, my friend did who I was fixing the phone for. I just remember it was some outrageously large negative number.). Thought it was weird, and maybe thought it was a software issue, so I booted to TWRP and wiped the cache and dalvik. Rebooted the phone, and the app reset to something along the lines of 500 hours. That is a bit more believable.
I plugged the phone into my laptop to let it charge (as it was the only way I could charge it at the time), my laptop saw the Moto, and the Moto said "Charging..." and "Android Debugging...", and thought it was working. I had to run an errand, and when I returned about an hour later, the phone hadn't moved a drop up or down. My laptop was asleep, so I assumed maybe it just stopped charging when my laptop shut off, and I was exhausted myself so I just let it sit on standby all night.
Morning came, and the Moto is dead. I plug it into the wall charger I was just using to charge my v10 with (brand new cord, made for data transferring and charging that I used once before with the old battery), and head to class, hoping it'll charge. Guess what? It didn't charge. Well, it did a little. It went up from 0% to 3%, and sat there. Annoyed, I unplugged and replugged in the phone. It came up with the white battery charging screen, switched to the Nougat "N", vibrated, then went to a black battery charging thing. Once there, the battery icon went up two squares, the screen flashed, and the phone died and stopped charging, then repeated itself a few more times until it went silent.
I started to think maybe my brand new cord was screwing up, so I grabbed another one I had and plugged it into my desktop. I had read on another thread that sometimes you can force the phone to jumpstart charging by plugging in the phone and holding down power + volume down for upwards of two minutes. I tried this, and it charged enough that I could turn the phone on again, but it wouldn't charge enough to do much more. I left it plugged into my desktop for a few hours, not allowing the desktop to fall asleep, and yet the phone was still not rising above 3 or 4% despite the fact that it says that it is charging. Oh, and the phone was on the whole time if it was plugged in, but the moment I unplugged it (Like the one time it got over 5%), it immediately shuts down.
I know I'll probably just have to buy another new battery for the dumb thing, but I am just curious to see if there is anything I can do to fix this, just because I cannot currently afford to buy another new battery (and my friend, who this phone belongs to, is getting impatient on getting it back.)
