Wanted to start up a thread where users can share their experience with the underscreen fingerprint scanner as well as faceunlock.
I registered both thumbs and right index finger. It seems like the scanner will only read the finger correctly if the finger is placed in the same orientation as it was during the initial registration. This is a bummer.
Seems like the faceunlock unlocks the phone even before the fingerprint scanner tries to read the print.
The faceunlock is not that secure. I would go out and say it is not secure at all. My brother came to check my new phone and it unlocks the phone based on his face. I think it's only because we both have beards.
Anyway, bit disappointed, with they just stick with regular fingerprint reader on the back.
The underscreen fingerprint scanner is a tech that is not really ready for primetime. I hope this does not hinder the sales of the phone.
I am using a T-Mobile variant on 9.0.
Hi there,
So, my theory is that the finger print sensor is NOT optimized for Oxygen OS. there is a huge lag obviously compared to any previous Oneplus Phones. that being said, there are a couple of factors that can contribute:
Screen is dirty
Finger is dirty.
Try registering your fingerprint in Paypal or Cash or any of Google Pay or your banking app or any of the other programs that require a fingerprint sensor. Since it was already registered and (hopefully only) stored on the phone, these apps all registered my finger lightning (sorry apply pun) quick. NOT as fast as previous fingerprint sensors on the back, but MUCH faster, at least to me, as trying to unlock it on the screen once it's sleeping. Yes, and by the way, the sensor is NOT always on.
For instance, you have to either turn the screen on, or have the tap to unlock screen or raise to unlock screen on in order to have the sensor unlock your fingerprint.
There's also quite a few bugs i've found. To me, and I've owned every Oneplus since the 2, the T mobile version doesn't feel that optimized in terms of OxygenOS. I don't have an unlocked 6T to compare, but there's a few things that the T Mobile version doesn't include, that was announced at the presentation, since as the nice portrait mode of the camera. I am hoping that it gets updated soon, otherwise i'll just completely buy this out and sell it and pick up a RED 6 or 6T again.
Suffice to say, i'm a little disappointed. Great advertising though with EVERY tech site that this was the future, although the future is not as quick as what's going on now.
Face unlock is VERY quick, but not that secure. I agree.
If it wasn't for the larger battery and the T Mobile trade in, I would have gone back to the Oneplus 6, however, I can't find RED in 128/8.
I have multiple fingers registered and they all work fine and fast. Increasingly fast in fact ... So fast that it made me wonder if the phone was actually locked in the first place by using unregistered fingers. Works fine and fast no matter what orientation my finger is on the sensor.
I've been reading so many posts complaining about the in-display fingerprint sensor ... Saying it's slow. Glitchy. Inconsistent. I have not seen any hint of that on my new OP6T.
It seems to function as good as or better than my OP3T's dedicated sensor.
I was having issues as well so deleted all my prints and redid them this time by not pressing so hard on the screen. Now it works 10x better
I have an unlocked version and I think, in my case, it has worked better then the sensor on the back. My fingers are the nastiest , dirtiest(stained with oil and dirt) and it does better then what the back sensor ever did . It may be a touch slower but does a half second really matter ?

Same here, works perfectly for me, I have 4 fingerprints registered, both thumbs and indexes. They all got increasingly faster with time.
My friend came over yesterday with his pixel 3xl, was worried the in screen reader would be mediocre, but he was so impressed with the performance, decided to sell his phone and order the 6t, guess he couldn't live with that notch lol
You don't even need to add multiple prints. When setting up your print, just scan in at different angles with every press. I used the same strategy with the old external scanner so my fingerprint could be picked up at odd angles, and it applies to this as well. There is no difference between this under display reader and the old external one, in terms of speed.
I came from Samsung Note8 and the sensor on the 6T is much faster than the Note 8.
Not sure what kind of weird crap ya'll are having to do to get your prints working in different angles... I simply registered mine as normal. I can do them from upside down, sideways... It doesn't matter.
I don't understand why so many seem to be having issues with this. It's by far faster and more reliable than the capacitive scanner on my old OP2. One interesting thing I've noticed is that if there is a slight delay, it's the OS not the scanner. Sometimes I'll remove my finger before the screen unlocks but the screen still unlocks, it just takes a few extra microseconds. The scan time is less than a second and it seems to work in various finger positions.
Coming from 5T and 6 I find the 6T scanner to be perfectly fine. It may be "marginally" slower but we're really splitting hairs. It fires up and unlocks in a timely manner.
As for face unlock if I wear my sunglasses in the car it won't unlock with my face. I have to pop my shades off for it to register.
I have no issues with mine, I can unlock it from any angle on all my registered fingers. I'd recommend deleting your fingerprints and reregistering.
Maybe we should start posting how we registered our fingerprints. The ones that are having success should post how they registered there fingerprints. Then we can determine a sure fire way on how to do it.
The scanner is working fine for me.
I found that for my left thumb, training it in the way I place my finger when I pick up the phone made it fast and flawless.
Too everyone who states its laggy or slow, especially compared to previous ONEPLUS devices, remember this, the in-display fingerprint sensor is optical meaning it scans an IMAGE of your finger as reference. Hardware fingerprint sensors map a 3d layer of your finger which makes them faster and more responsive because they do not have to rely on light or image capture. I can say without a doubt tho, the oneplus 6t has the fastest optical fingerprint sensor compared to other manufacturer, including the mate 20 pro. This has also been proven in a couple youtube comparisons. Optical will never be perfect because it relies on light, pressure and image scanning. I have used the fingerprint sensor and face unlock and I am quite impressed with both, no issues at all for me. Yes they are both less secure but if people are that worried about security, stick with a PIN instead. I am by no means bickering at people, just want to relay useful information to provide a valid arguement in OnePlus' favor as they have truly optimized their unlock methods compared to others who use the SAME technology.

You have to pop your shades off because part of the code for face unlock is that it requires youre eyes to be looking at the screen to unlock. Its so that someone cant try to steal your phone while your sleep and unlock it with your face to snoop. Test it, have a friend look at the phone while you look at it with your eyes closed, then open your eyes and it will unlock.

When I registered mine, I do the same thing I do to all my phones and I actually turn my finger in multiple directions and that seemed to work for me. I can scan it side ways and up and it works, atleast for me it did.

If you do that then it may not recognized you when your shades are off. What you could try is start recodring your face with your shades on, then as it goes, take them off and see if that works
Wonder if some phones are "defective"? Mine is pretty fast.
Anyone here thought about returning your 6T for a 6? I've been really considering this because I feel I'm losing more hardware with the 6T.
1. Iffy fingerprint sensor over a perfect one
2. No more led notification.
3. No more headphone jack
To me the only real gain is the battery. The whole notch/screen thing is not a big deal.

I love the headphone jack, but I traded in my OnePlus One, so I'll just make do. I didn't even realize I was losing the LED notification, but I personally don't care too much because sometimes waiting for a pulse on the phone is the same as waking your phone anyways.
From what I've seen, the fingerprint is definitely slower, but on the case of it being iffy, I think that depends on the setup. I personally prefer a fingerprint sensor on the front.

I hated losing the ability to just press the fingerprint sensor as well. You can turn on tap-to-wake so you just gotta tap the screen a couple times to get in (tap to wake -> tap for fingerprint sensor), instead of picking it up and pressing a button first.
Nah, it's just a matter of personal preference.

The T-Mobile can work with just as many as the unlocked once the sim is unlocked. Same hardware, same bands, etc.

1. I hated having fingerprint sensor on the back always looking/searching when I need to log in to diverse apps. Only time I miss it is when I pull my phone out of pocket and used to touch back sensor to turn the phone on. But I double tap it now.
2. Yes, no led notifications was disappointing but most other phones are losing it. However, app called pixel pulse solved the problem, and it's actually now better then notification LED.
3. I rarely used headphone jack. Why would you want to have cord dangling around? Isn't it annoying? I stopped using corded headphones long time ago and have Bluetooth earbuds everywhere if needed.
4. Smaller notch allows for more notifications.
5. Better sounding speaker.
6. Base option comes with128GB space.
7. Larger capacity battery.
I certainly dislike where phone industry is going. Removing essentials like notification LED, headphone jack, larger narrower screens? But it's what nearly everyone is making these days. It would be nice if OnePlus does something like Google and has 2 versions, one smaller 5.5 inch 16:9 screen, and this one 6.4+with same specifications (except battery).
Dear Friends ,
Do this smartphone have the led notification like pixel 2xl ?
No, there is no notification LED
Looks like AOD for now...
That's already more than OP can say ?
That's something I'd really miss about my Pixel 2 XL.

That really sucks since AOD uses a lot more battery. If basically causes the phone to burn an additional 1% per hour when in stand by.

Exactly. Pretty sure Google thought of everything on this device. The software may need some tuning, but that's it. The framework is solid

That may be true. Although we still don't know how much power the motion sense sensor uses. The motion sense senor is basically radar. It's sending out radio waves and detecting what comes back. That takes power too. It's possible that the motion sense sensor always running will use just as much battery than AOD does. It could even use MORE battery than AOD.
Hi guys ,
It's only a my opinion ,
but pay for pixel 3xl and 4xl 900 / 1000 euro and missing led notification , It's a big problem , I love that small light.

LOL! I agree with most of what I've seen you post, but this? C'mon. Google consistently misses things when their phones are first released. Google routinely does not think of everything, at least not at first launch anyway. Often times they only seem to be aware of issues after hundred of users report on it.

I loled when i read that to. I was just telling my friend who works at Verizon and is trying to get me to upgrade that ill wait till people get it in hand as pixels are known to have phone breaking bugs at launch lol
I go through a lot of phones and all had problems, some of them never got fixed. I'm doubtful this phone will be any different than every phone before it in that regard. AOD uses power, no lie, I like it so I leave it on. Turning it off is no answer, I get that. What I don't get is turning off all the cool features a phone has to save batt when charging is everywhere, it's quick, and portable supplies are cheap, work well, and will get you through a pinch. This phone will likely have 4 or more hours without skimping on anything. To me the win is playing with the toys I bought, not gimping them to save battery life which can be easily and well covered.
This isn't a call out BTW, I just don't understand the thought process.
having an LED notification light is better than not having one. There's plenty of room. The Pixel 4 has a lower screen to body ratio than the S8. And while the S8 has an annoying curved screen, it has an LED notification light. It can coexist with an AOD. You can turn one off and use the other. Just like the headphone jack argument IMO. And the LED notification light is just so useful. It's a shame that app that lets you customise it got neutered by Google's updates to Android.
Oh and it sucks that there isn't an SD card either. It makes sense to companies as they can push paid cloud storage but not to customers.

Doesn't make sense to add as card support, as this still is a hack - as has been on Linux based systems for years - and thus a security risk. It actually doesn't make any sense to add a hack to my system. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think there motion sensor uses much power at all. I fully charged me phone before I went to bed last night and left it off the charger overnight. It only used 4% battery over 9 hours.

Well that's good news. That stand by time is better than I thought it would be with the radar sensor but still not what I got from my Pixel 2 XL when it was new. I dropped about 2-3% over 8 hours. Even now after 2 years I still only see about 4% over 8 hours.
I'm coming from an iPhone XS Max and I've gotta say this face Unlock is pretty bad in comparison. Very laggy.
Compared to the iPhone I personally feel like the face unlock works extremely well. I would try rescanning your face
Yes I think the pixel 4 doesn't have as wide of a viewing sometimes in bed I have to move the phone further up when I think my wife never had to do that but she probably just uses her password.... I wish they left the rear fingerprint that was the best option until youre hand where wet or had gloves on

Am I crazy that I still really like the Pixel 4 XL a year plus later?
I bought the Pixel 5 right away, wanting better battery life and bright screen, plus more one handed friendly phone.
Yes the Pixel 5 has insane battery life. That's it. It feels like a cheap toy phone, and the speakers suck do bad, mainly the earpiece for phone calls, sound tinny and like a mile away.
The Pixel 4 XL feels way more premium, higher end build quality, sharper looking display, better feel in hand, I know it's large for a 6.3" phone, but I find it easier to type on and just feels solid in hand.
Actually if you didn't tell anyone when these two phones were released, I bet most non tech people would think the Pixel 4 XL is a new 2020 phone, and the Pixel 5 an older phone from few years ago.
Anyways, hoping Google goes more flagship next year.
I looked at other phones, and nothing really interests me out there right now. Yeah the OnePlus 8 Pro looks great, but at this point the 9 Pro is due in March.
iPhone 12 Pro Max looks stunning, super high end build, and a beautiful huge screen, with a FLAT display But iOS ugh .
I don't buy phones every year. If the Pixel 5 had been released next year, I would have kept my Pixel 4 XL for 3-4 years, if possible. I don't want a small phone. I'm not interested in plastic rim phones(4a). I find hole-punches more offensive than top bezels... I would rather have real tech using the space. But I'm not sore about using lesser SoCs... Qualcomm is ruining flagship potentials with their 5G design choices in upper-end SoCs.
Just wait for a 2021 phone. It's not worth getting a new phone only a year later anymore.
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk
I agree that it's not worth getting a new phone after a year now. Also agree with OP in spirit although I haven't actually tried a pixel 5. I find the 4xl screen excellent size & resolution, I find face unlock brilliant. Somehow rear fingerprint scanner seems like years ago now. Personally, I use telephoto more than I would a wide angle camera and also, in my opinion, any amount of bezel or "forehead" is better than a hole in the screen. Ye, 2021 at least for me too.
Yeah I've had my pixel 4 XL since last November. I downgraded by selling my note 10 plus and using this as my daily driver. It is served its purpose for the most part but a year later there are things about it that are annoying me apart from an absolute ****ty selfie camera, there are more noticeable bugs and issues that I'm having now than I ever did when I got to device initially.
But it is what it is I've enjoyed it for the most part and I'm excited to receive my Sony Xperia 5 Mark II in a few days. That device is game changing compared to this and the pixel 5.

While I respect your opinion, I disagree,
the battery life alone is something that demolishes the pixel 4 XL.
Then you have an identical stock Android. the stock Android that pixels have that everybody glorifies an overhypes the saying is super smooth is no different than what is found on the Xperia.
and 120hz refresh rate.
Personally I found pixel devices to be completely overhyped for the prices that they're charging and with formidable issues such as poor build quality (seen regularly with all pixel devices since their inception) I just haven't had my money's worth of an experience with the pixel devices.
I genuinely believe the software and the apps that Google develops is great. They should stick with software development and just present their full-fledged featured apps with no compromises to all Android phones. 90% of their apps are available on other devices and can definitely be ported over specifically the recorder app and even on some phones gcam. Which in all honesty I've seen ports of gcam that function better than the stock camera on the pixel 4 XL.
But yeah that's just been my experience everybody's differs they might have had an entirely pleasant experience and that's good on them but I'm excited to be back on the Xperia line again.

Yeah software is good on the Sony ones. Only thing that was annoying when I had the 1 mk ii was the disappointing camera and slow UI in the app.
21:9 is comfy to hold so I miss that. Id be very surprised if a 4000mah battery at 120hz would be much different to the 4XLs.
Hopefully a better experience for you on the 5ii than I had on the 1ii.
I upgraded to Pixel 5 from the 4XL. My primary motivation is I hate the face unlock. I sorely missed the old fingerprint reader along the back. The only reason I upgraded from a 3XL to 4XL was the 3XL had hardware probs.
At first, I wasnt sure I was gonna be able to do it as the smaller phone felt odd and wasnt sure if I'd be able to type vertically with my thumbs (I still can once I got the case on it). It took some getting used to but then I quickily realized how absurdly big and heavy the 4XL is. The only other obstacle was no Active Edge. I never used it for the Assistant, but I use it daily to use my flashlight from the lock screen. This one was a must. I then discovered the Torchie app , that I can activate using the volume buttons.
Its much faster and the battery life is crazy good. Im very happy now having my fingerprint unlock back and more room in my pockets.
Tried the pixel 5 out and couldn't justify upgrading from my 4xl.
I'm returning it to Best buy tomorrow

I hear this all the time, but I haven't experienced it much. To begin with, I don't think face unlock even looks at the bottom part of your face. Maybe it's a male-specific beard precaution. With a face contouring mask, moving the mask down half an inch is all it takes for my phone to recognize me. I can manage that just by opening my mouth wide which pulls down the mask slightly.

I work on the medical field, wear a mask all shift, and it has never recognized me with a mask on. I don't have a beard but interestingly it does unlock when I have shaving cream on my face probably because it can actually get the contours of my cheeks. Either way, I usually use Smart Lock with my watch while at work.
