How To Check If Phone is a Refurb? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Is there a foolproof way to determine if a 4 XL is brand new or a refurb?

Unless it came with marks on it, stuff missing from the box, no plastic covers front and back I don't see how you could tell.

Thanks. My inquiry is more along the lines of if there is an app or software check that can be done.

Switching out Micro SD rubber dust cover, plug, cap, grommet thingy

I have two Tilts in my possession, one of which is a replacement from AT&T, and the other which will be going into a box and back to them tomorrow.
The problem is that the replacement they sent me has a severely screwed up rubber cap over the SD slot. It looks like the previous owner tried to open it with a flippin' screwdriver and the rubber is all chewed up. Furthermore, the side they fiddled with was the right (hinged) side, which is why they couldn't open it. However, now the right side of the cover is also "pulled out" a little and won't go back into being "flush" with the device.
This probably isn't a returnable problem, so I'm wondering if there's a way to switch the rubber grommets on the two phones? My other phone's is in perfect condition.

Sorry no advice re swapping the covers. But surely if AT&T have sent you a replacement that is damaged, that is enough to deserve a return? What other damage is there you can't see? I know some carriers offer refurbished models as replacements, but doesn't even sound like they've given it a once over! You paid AT&T enough money for this device - I personally would get in touch and ask for a proper replacement!
My two pence/cents worth
Thanks for your two pence worth.
Just made the call to exchange the sucker. Since it's my fourth, I'm hoping for a new one. Some people have all the luck!
Learn more about the exchange process here.
My fourth exchange Tilt appears to be new, and without any of the problems of my first 4 Tilts! My nightmare is over...

nexus one seperating between to piece of plastic mold

Hey guys,
I just noticed on the back of the phone where the letters HTC are located sperated from the frame, I popped it back in place.
Does HTC still warranty rooted, unlocked bootloader, custom rom nexus ones?
for hardward defects?
Thanks
Its hit or miss. Depends on if the rep wants to. You can try to get it repaired, but may be charged $200 for a "motherboard fix"
the phone has no problems with it, I don't think anything has been broken inside just popped out, and I am a disappointed that it could happen I take good care of the phone , and those youtube videos on the product testing where they bent the phone and dropped it sold me on the quality of the phone.

Help changing the top speaker grill on HTC One!

Hi, I damaged my phone on the top so I am trying to replace the top speaker grill cover, I already have the replacement but I have no idea how to do it without messing my phone. I have investigated a lot and in the only teardown video I fount the top spekar grill seems to always be attached to the phone, and the ifixit guid has no information on this part of the phone. Please if anyone has done it or knows how to do this any kind of help would be useful as I can't stand to se my phone damaged no more.
Thanks

Good luck, from everything I have seen it is glued to the phone. YMMV but my guess you would need to heat it up, peel it off the phone and then figure some way to glue the new one on.
It looks like the speakers are step 17 in the link below and there are 19 streps shown to dismantle (at that site anyways).
HTC One Repairability Score: One out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) I see How the HTC"ONE" got its name
HTC One Teardown
Very, very difficult (possibly impossible?) to open the device without damaging the rear case. This makes every component extremely difficult to replace.

Thanks!!! the thing is I dont want to replace my speakers I only need to replace the top front cover of the speaker, and I cant seem to find a tutorial to do that
asking questions in this section is against the rules. please use the correct section next time.
Moved to Q&A.
You are most likely not going to find any thing related to your speaker grill replacement. This phone is not meant to be and have user replaceable parts.
Even most of the pros won't touch it to replace parts, but they buy them to strip for parts to sell to people that want to attempt DIY repairs only to further destroy the phone.
If you do figure it out and everything is repairable, working, and looks new please post a guide.

HTC One Top Cover Replacement
Guys,
I am ordering the top cover (& bottom cover parts) from this site:
http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-htc-one-top-cover-and-bottom-cover.html
My top cover has deep dink/dent since I dropped it from waist high to the floor (NAKED).
The replacement will arrive in 10-15 days from Today.
The top cover speaker grill is glued and screwed while the bottom cover speaker grill only glued.
I manage to take off the top cover by pulling it off and cut the screwed part. I don't want to open the screw since it can be only opened if you open the whole back chassis of the phone.
When the top cover part arrive, I will cut the screw part and just glue it to the phone.
Currently I am using my secondary phone which is the boring iPhone 5, it is still boring even with iOS 7 installed.
Will update the post with pictures and guides when the replacement arrive, wish me luck guys!! :good::good:

HTC One replacement parts

http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-htc-one-rear-housing.html
I almost lost my SIM card and tray today, and looked online for a replacement. I was surprised at what I found. They seem to have every component of the One there.
I was wondering. Could somebody potentially buy the individual OEM components to work backwards and see how they fit together? Maybe we can find a way to take our phones apart more easily?
The components there are relatively cheap, so...
Well this is an awesome find. I dropped my precious One and banged up the top aluminum cover and it looks like I can buy that piece for $10. Wonder how hard it will be to replace that? Thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295007&page=5
Well, I looked at the iFixit teardown, and I think that, if you just want to replace the unibody case (including the plastic), it shouldn't be too hard. Yes, you will destroy the old one, but the new one is just $25.
So I think if you dented/scratched your back, you can just apply a little heat and use some kind of separating tool to get the back off. Then, you can just remove all traces of the old one (incl glue) and hot glue gun on the new one.
Here is a thread that may be of interest.

would be neat to mix and match white and black cases
Even better: Black front with red back.
Can't wait until the red parts are available!
hello,
I'm looking for the back cover of my htc one glamour red and can not find it any place, you know where I can find it?

Hairline cracks - Anyone?

Anyone else notice hairline cracks forming around their Moto X... I have a white X so it's a little more noticeable because the contrast (dirt). I have one at the top (center) near the headphone port, and two on each side of the volume rocker. This reminds me of the iPhone 3GS problems. Another question I have for those that DO have them, have you contacted Motorola for service/warranty replacement?
I've seen this on photos on swappa. When did a quick search, I found pictures of cracks by the headphone jack and around the sim cover.

Thanks for the link... I didn't even check the sim tray side... Seems as if I'm not the only one
Just an update;I got off the phone with Motorola warranty repair. They will repair or replace my device and send me a loaner in the meantime ( with a security deposit)...
Not too bad
Ya I got three. Two on the Sim card side and one on the volume rocker side. Seems decently solid still so I won't be taking it in.I might tho lol.
Not for sure who your carrier is but I had the same issue.... Called AT&T. They're aware of this issue. Received a new x in the mail the next day under warranty!

If this minor flaw is a common thing....I'd rather just keep my phone.....rather than get another that will probably do the same thing. My phone works flawless. What if I got a less flawless phone in return. Lol

I had the same issue with a white woven back. One by the sim tray and one by the audio jack, but they only really showed up once i removed the back cover. I've since swapped it out with a wooden back (Walnut i think?) where i haven't had any of the same issues.
I haven't noticed any. I waited a couple months to order my phone so it's not from the first run. Perhaps they improved the material later.
First run black VZ model here. I noticed a couple near the SIM tray. Think they showed up last month. Nothing major, but if it spreads... Then I'll look into warranty repair / replacement.

Are people with the problem storing the phone in a pocket where it gets stressed when you sit down etc? Obviously the casing is too brittle, just wondering if it cracking from flexing when in a pocket.
None on mine....but it's been in an otter box from the get go.

I am looking to buy this phone and would like to know: all these cracks seem to be on the back cover, correct? If so - isn't it user-replaceable? Why is there a need to send it in for repair?

The Moto G's back cover is user replaceable, not the Moto X.

Yes, the majority of these cracks seem to be on the back cover. The back is not supposed to be user replaceable on the Moto X. It doesn't look to be too difficult to remove the back as it's just tabs and one big glue spot. Here's the iFixit teardown so you can see how to remove the backing.
Just an update;
So I've been happily using my loaner phone while my original X was being repaired. Today FedEx dropped off my original phone, un-repaired. Same hairline cracks, absolutely no changes to the phone. Called the warranty department, explained my frustrations, and the rep could only "speculate" that it wasn't repaired because they deemed it physical abuse yet, nothing in the repair notes state that.... While typing this reply, Motorola called me back asking if I wanted to keep the loaner phone instead of re-sending my original back in for repair. So after 2 weeks, a minor mess up on Motorolas part, I've got a brand new phone.
TLDR; after a slight hiccup, Motorola replaced my old phone with a brand new device.
So what should I do if I planed to buy this device? I don't eat a device that will crack without any reason

Wouldn't it be easier to eat if it cracks up easy?
And seriously. These are a handful of people posting about this issue. That really doesn't mean its all devices. Or this thread would have hundreds of posts reporting the issue.

Mine has hairline cracks on the edge of the back cover. These happened from dropping it in its protective case. 0 damage on the actual phone except for these cracks.
Seems like a weak cover. Anybody eles?
i had one on the very back, up the V on verizon and it was about 1 1/2 inches long. told Motorola and i got a code for a new one. hope they can help you out!
