Note 9 recovery - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question or over asked, I'm new and could really use some help
so my note 9 messed up last night and the screen wouldn't turn on, I could plug the charger in and it would vibrate and the red dot would come, I did the reset holding the lock button and volume down, and it didn't fix it, the only way to get the screen on was by constantly plugging and unplugging the charger and maybe after 5 or 20 min it would turn on. So I kept trying the rest since I couldn't turn it off normally and it didn't change anything, and in doing that I some how factory reset the phone without backing up over 1000 photos, I started to Google and got a lot of people saying that the photos could still be there locked away waiting to be overwritten but I would need to root my phone and get in there with certain programs, with further googling I found that my phone Samsung note 9 with snapdragon can't yet be rooted because the locked bootloader and there isn't an easy way to unlock it, i saw there was one way but that involved erasing everything on the phone. So my questions are are my photos actually buried in the phone and I need to figure out how to root it or are they just gone and if its the former, is there a way to root it without erasing everything, if that erases the hidden files, because if they are just gone this phone is going in the garbage, not even two years old and it bricked
I posted this on reddit before I found this place, sorry if this is misuse of the forum I could just really use some help, some of the photos were very sentimental and I just want to know if they could possibly still be there

Old android version(probly ics or lower) allowed the internal storage to be mounted as usb storage in computer. Then can use recovery program such as recuva to recover the deleted files, without root. However that day has long gone. Probably there is a program out there could recover your files/photos. I used to read somewhere that a windows based program claims to be able to do that but I can't recall what was it. In short, they're unlikely can be recovered. But let's wait if anybody else could shed us some lights.

I chatted with someone through Samsung website and he said there was nothing they could do if it wasn't backed up, or do you mean a physical samsung place?

It's sad to hear that. I think your problem might be the battery, go to some repair store and check your battery, everything I know. If you want to save your data (photo, video....), the first thing you have to do is make your phone usable, right? I recommend you go to the Samsung center, tell them your problem, may be you will get some solution that may resolve your issue. We are users, we are not developers so everything we can do is seek help from someone and in this situation please go to a Samsung center, maybe God will smile at you.
P/s: did you check your data in google cloud and Samsung cloud? As i know your data like photos or video will auto-sync with your Google account and Samsung account, may be you will get lucky.

Sorry if that didn't help you and my bad English.

Returning a bricked phone

So, I have successfully bricked my phone (not by choice). I am a long time WinMo user and I have never even come close to bricking a phone. Today was exactly one week from when I bought my first android phone and I bricked it.(not blaming android, I love android)
I have tried EVERYTHING, to no avail.
My phone is on the phone++!++computer screen.
So, first thing tomorrow morning, I am headed to the AT&T store for replacement (I will act dumb and get the phone).
My questions are -
1.Will my information (contacts, emails, etc.) on the phone be checked or in any way violated?
2.If they do find out that I had rooted the phone, after I have already walked out of the store, can they do anything about it?
1: Yes, the contacts and all other data on the phone itself is still there, and will all still be there when Samsung / AT&T *un-bricks* the phone.
2: They "could", but I am not knowledgable enough to know if they "will".
Or, save yourself the hassle, and the negative moral karma, and read here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I've intentionally (with much failure), tried to "break" the phone so that I'd know how to fix it.
The above linked post will not only recover you from your "phone++!++computer" issue, but actually works so far as the dreaded "orange hex dump".

I have tried everything. I don't want to return this phone, but there is no option left.
None of the methods work and I am pretty experienced in this stuff. So, its not that I am messing up on the methods, its just that there was a batch of phones that had the key combos disabled.
Once you get the new phone there is nothing they can do because they have already agreed to replace it. All they do with it is send it off to be refurbished and it is completely wiped clean. I agree with the others that you have not tried *everything* because I have yet to read a post on any forum about a legitimate bricking of this phone.

I can tell you that by flashing ONLY the pit file in odin another user and myself were able to succesfully make the phone unresponsive to all buttons, all methods and all pulls of the battery. it literally turned into a brick...then again i would call this an illegitimate method after realized how simple it is now. as long as i can get power to the phone thou i have to agree ive been able to save it every time now

Seriously?
I was up for six hours last night trying to fix the damn thing. I don't want to replace the phone just because I want to beat the system. I have never ran into problems when I am modding. I always figure it out, but when the phone is absolutely unresponsive to all keys, what am I going to do?
Anyways, this thread can be closed now.
That same screen (http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8420/hum1e0.jpg) happened to me yesterday. I thought I had tried all of the key combos but I missed one.
Try the following: (I know you said you tried all of the methods, but I thought it was worth mentioning just in case)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 (Method 3)
I hope if you have not tried that yet, that it will work for you and save you the hassle of going to ATT.

seems pretty complicated to flash this phone. My last one-Nokia N900- is very easy to work with. It never get bricked.

I tried that too, nothing. I got it exchanged. No hassle.
AT&T store rep just said the phone will be factory reset and there is nothing to it.
Anyway thanks for the help folks, really appreciate it.
Lets hope, I don't bust this one because the phone I just got is also impervious to key combos. I tried getting into recovery (just for the heck of it), it didnt work with the keys, had to do it with "adb reboot recovery".

[Q] a quick bypass of pattern lock

Recently my BFF thinks that her boyfriend is starting to lose feeling for her and start finding other girls. She wants to break up but her boyfriend won't let her go unless she provides evidence that he is losing feeling/cheating on her. She asked me to help but I'm at a loss except for one idea.
It was recently reported in the newspapers that you could bypass all security by freezing an android phone for an hour, then quickly removing the battery and putting it back on and turning it on while it was still below -10 degrees celcius. Is this really possible?
Secondly, his phone is a Galaxy Mini with whatever is the newest firmware (I'm a galaxy Mini II user so I'm not too sure), stock kernel, stock ROM, non-rooted but bootloader i think by default it's unlocked in SG. (mine came unlocked). It's been in use for quite some time only.
If the freezing is not possible, could we do it by any other method? note: before i can get pass the damn password i can't turn adb, unknown sources or debugging on.
Yeah that's all. Also, we can't wipe the /data since that's what we're gunning for. The method must be accomplish-able within 2 hours.
I might sound like I'm asking for a lot and might be unreasonable but please help.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Please don't talk about the "just break up" or "politely ask him". If that had worked I wouldn't be asking here. He refuses to break up and he refuses to give his phone to me, even to "play". so called ethical hacking through the human link doesn't work anymore. We plan to take his phone for a while, bypass the pattern lock, then sieve through information.

Erm sorry i'm not sure what do you mean by exploits. I'm sorry I'm kinda new to all these stuff.
How do u know that the phone is not "Debugging On"
Most android users are turning on that feature.
Well if the Debugging is ON ... I got the way to unlock the pattern within 1 minute.
Fastest way to bypass: Wipe data. If you can't, there are only harder ways.
Factory reset
You can always do a factory reset to remove the lock but it will wipe /data. You can still do that tho. It's explained here : http://www.hard-reset.com/samsung-gt-s5570-galaxy-mini-hard-reset.html . Also the fastboot mode works with adb swell as download mode.

[Q] Note is dead and I want to delete memory data

Hi, my phone suddenly died a week ago. It was on, it went off and goodbye.
Samsung service told me they have to "repair the motherboard" for 146,00 euros, so I already bought another phone.
Anyway, I would like to sell the Note even if broken, and I have already the buyer, but I'm worried about personal data: I saved a lot of pictures, files, documents on the internal memory, and now I can't delete them because the phone doesn't turn on.
My questions: is it possible for me to know now, if the buyer will repair the phone, if my data will all be recovered? They will be all there? Or the repair will force a reset?
If I can't know now for sure, is there a way to reset the phone, or just the internal memory, via hardware? Something to short circuit?
I don't want to retrieve data (I have a backup), I want the opposite, to delete them without powering on the phone...
Last chance: could someone show me which is the "16/32 GB memory chip" on the motherboard? If I break it somehow, do I clear the data?
I hope I made myself clear, sorry for my english...

Are you able to access download or recovery mode in that phone?
No, the phone does not turn on (normal boot, recovery, nothing). There is no power. I tried from PC, charger, with battery, without it, and so on.
Anyway, Samsung Service already told me that it has an hardware fault (motherboard), that's why I'm trying to reset via hardware.
Software is not accessible.
Not possible until you get it JTAG ed and working. Alteast and adb connection is necessary.

HELP : Phone asking for PIN instead of Fingerprints after MarshMallow update.

Hi,
I'm in need of help urgently!
Last week I had updated my Note 5 to MarshMallow and it was working fine. I remember the phone had never been off or restarted after the update until today when the battery ran out. Connected to charger and when I turned on the mobile it showed this message :
"Enter PIN instead of using fingerprint recognition after restarting device to protect fingerprints"
Now I've been unlocking screen using fingerprints from the time I got this phone. Unfortunately, I forgot the PIN and now I can't use fingerprints to unlock the screen. After a few failed attempts the wait time keeps increasing and now it has reached 30 minutes.
Is there anyway I can unlock my phone?
Please help ASAP!
Login into this website using your Samsung account
findmymobile.samsung.com/mindex.jsp
Find "Unlock my device" section
And make sure your device is connected to the internet then unlock you device

On the MM build, after a reboot you have to use the pin but subsequent times will be fingerprint, I have no idea why they did this. Sorry that happened to you, I have no idea how to get around that other than to keep searching, someone else had had that happen I'm sure.
Yep, I'm screwed, too...
I even kept a list of every iteration of PIN numbers I would ever use (they are generated by an algorithm). I have tried every one - and I am still locked out - with 60 minutes in between tries!
I have very, very important legal documents, notes, and recordings on my phone that I didn't get to backup yet. Unfortunately, most backups do not "dig" well enough under App directories to get all files generated by all Apps. So sad...
And "No", I can't access any sdcard or SIM bc it's an S6 edge+, and they are all locked into the case! The supposed Samsung "unlock" feature does not work, though it says it does.
Dying here! HELP...

You're screwed really and this is why a lot of devs on here say to make backups! Your only option at this point is a firmware reinstall..

But without root, I can't find a backup that will catch all the files well nested under App directories. With root, there are too many "gotchas" nowadays.
Besides, I know I have tried every PIN I would have ever set - so this MM "PIN" is a joke! There should have been a warning, as this is a serious disruption of service.
Wiping is just not an option - I have files created Friday, before the Upgrade, which would not have gotten backed up anyway. Besides, No update should block data access. One of you Gurus can't think of a workaround or push Samsung or Google for a fix? I'm thinking more like "Class Action Lawsuit" for disrupting normal access to my data and my lawsuit...
Anyone else that pissed?

You need to learn to "manually" back your stuff up yourself and don't rely on any programs/apps to do it...
There's seriously nothing the dev community could do because for 1 it's not the right way to go about this because if someone's phone is stolen or whatever basically they'd be able to come to XDA-Developers and find a way around the phone being locked for 2 that's definitely not what devs do, we don't look for ways to break into a phone or circumvent the security. You should have backed up anything you knew was important, simple as that .. You need to factory reset at this point. Sorry.

You need to give more details bud. We are not mediums here.
Which version of the phone do you have? Where did you buy it? Rooted, non-rooted? What weird things, other than taking screenshots? How exactly do you understand that it is taking screenshots, does it give you a notification or do they just appear in the gallery? How often does it happen, is it random or does it also happen when you do certain tasks?
If you need help with such a potentially complicated issue, you need to give as many details as possible so people can help you without guessing everything.
On Android 9 and above it's almost impossible to have an embedded rootkit that a factory reset won't kill. On 8 and below it is.
So it's something you installed (including updates), or that's living in your data or one of the factory installed apps. Fun times

That's complete overkill. More than likely a factory reset is all that's needed... and greater care when downloading.
Pre-Pie OS's are susceptible to rootkits that can breached protected partitions but not the more modern Android versions if I remember correctly.
This is an example of one that requires a reflash to totally wipe it from the phone:

I disagree, tot overkill at all if its a persistent malware. Plus if you want peace of mind it is about as simple of a process as loading the factory ROM. Why take a risk?
OP hasn't checked into this thread after the initial message. Maybe the issue has been solved.

Be prepared and never sync all your backup copies at the same time, stagger the syncing to help avoid the possibility of all copies being compromised.
This unlikely but it's a wild, wild world.

When I typed that original post I was using the phone and the keyboard kept screwing up and I was exhausted. I have factory reset the phone. The strange things that were happening like when I'd hit my recent apps tab at the bottom, if open say Ebay app then Chrome. I'd hit the recent and it would show gallery and settings. Since the factory reset it has still been taking screenshots. I've only had this phone about 20 days and got it at bestbuy. It's over the 15 day period to just take it back but hadn't been incredibly long so I guess we will see what they say. I dont do alot of app downloading or visit a bunch of websites and so on so I have no clue how this happened. Here's the real kicker, this stuff is also happening on my wife's phone (a11) I am honestly thinking about throwing the a11 in the trash and trying to get this one replaced. It's so damn frustrating it's caused arguments because I'm the one who will spend time learning how to do stuff with this. Like how to use everything the phone is capable of and can look in the settings and see that the "tracking device" in the settings that can UNLOCK YOUR PHONE, ACCESS YOUR CONTACTS" is the find my phone app that you installed from Samsung. So of course I am a "hacker" and really know nothing about this crap. And she's the person who will download every survey and shopping app she can find. Try something bud, in the settings there is the palm swipe capture option. When you find it try and disable it and see if the issue persists. If your phone has no virus, it might have some issue with the gestures or the screen and it might be getting mistaken that you are trying to make a screenshot.
And regarding your wife, you gotta sit her down, smash on the table with your hand so you can get her attention for a bit, and show her some videos about security and the risks involved with ignorant behaviors in the digital world.
Good luck.

I have the palm swipe off. She reset hers and says it's still doing "weird stuff" but this has been such an extreme issue with us that I can't and won't touch her phone. Because even with her sitting there watching me if I'm going through **** too fast for her to see exactly what's happening it's like I'm asked to slow down and I try to... Then she's will be like well what's this and start touching **** on the screen and u lost where I was in the first place because I then have to explain something that was just there.. Like if I'm in running processes and it's like WHATS THAT. And it will be a system operation that she read somewhere is "a concern for vulnerability" and doesn't understand that it doesn't mean that because that's there that it's a problem.. It's there normally and it is possible that's a way for security to be compromised.. Hopefully you can see the pattern I'm going in..... I am pretty good with this stuff for a power user. I know what oden is.. I know what a ROM is and stuff but I have never actually loaded my own ROM on a phone. And the fact that I sort of understand some of this is working to a huge disadvantage because it's like.. Well you know how to do this stuff so no wonder she's concerned.. When in fact I don't know how to do this stuff.. I made (foolishly) the comment when I was showing a process used by find my phone to her and my sister... The fact that I just showed you this process running that your asking me about you're just viewing it in a different place shows that if I wanted to track you I'd do it and you'd be too stupid to ever find out... And it was just frustration.. I meant Id just look at your Google history or something along that mannor.. Anyways I'm gonna be heading to bestbuy to see what they say.. As far as her phone is concerned I'd rather just spend the 200 bucks and throw it in the trash. I can't do that with the s21 so this is where I am with all this. I wad actually told by my family not to worry about it.. So what if someone steals your bank info it will be fraud and you won't be responsible for it anyway.. So just forget about it and use it....and here I am
This isn't rocket science... or a soap opera
Do a factory reset then change your Google account password.
Don't load anything until it's verified to be functioning ok*.
Then be careful what you load.
*If that fails reflash the firmware.

I disagree, tot overkill at all if its a persistent malware. Plus if you want peace of mind it is about as simple of a process as loading the factory ROM. Why take a risk?

I am ready to do this if needed. I know this isn't a major thing to do but I've never actually done it and don't know where to get my factory ROM for this on my carrier and all of that good stuff. And do I need a computer to do this with oden or can that be done completely on the phone. I am not worried about anything on here I CA. Re-download apps and photos and stuff are backed up ill just start over

Or the rootkit has infiltrated all the OP's devices and data drives
Be prepared and never sync all your backup copies at the same time, stagger the syncing to help avoid the possibility of all copies being compromised.
This unlikely but it's a wild, wild world.

Plot twist: the malware actually created the OP

Here's the real kicker, this stuff is also happening on my wife's phone (a11) I am honestly thinking about throwing the a11 in the trash and trying to get this one replaced.

if this is for real I'd say your problems are far bigger than just yours and your wife's phones. I'd be looking at everything in your house, computers, routers, your amazon Alexa and every cloud drive you own.

Don't forget the smart appliances.
My bets on the fridge... you know the cold, silent type.
