Are google maps and whatsapp still locked to 60 hz? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Google blocked some apps from being displayed at 90 hz, do you happen to know if that is still the case with google maps (an app that is supper janky and would be benefit greatly being displayed at 90 hz) and whatsapp?

You can turn on to see the refresh rate on the top left corner in Developer Options. WhatsApp is 90 FPS and Google Maps is still 60.

My guess would be to save battery.

It will take some time to get used to it, so for now I have disabled it and possibly enable it again when I have time and patience, a screen protector and case for it. To play with the tilt scrolling feature, in the case I drop it.

How do you use the tilt scroll?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I assume you tilt the device up or down and it uses the accelerometer to scroll the page up or down

As I play with th N7, the more impressed I get. Consider, it has 13 sensors; gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetic field, orientation x2, rotation vector x2, linear acceleration x2, gravity xW, ambient light, corrected gyroscope sensor.

what is this tilt scrolling and where are the settings for it?
Just to know that tilt scrolling is causing wakelocks and battery drains because of that..better to turn it off for now..

It's in Chrome Developer settings. It's when you click on the multiple page button (the little icon in the upper right corner of the browser. Essentially by "flinging," the device, it cycles through the webpages you have open.
Did this feature get sent to file 13?
this is great!!! though it does drain battery.

Screen refresh rate

Hey guys, first time poster here.
Got my P20 pro about 5 days ago and one major thing I'm noticing is I can't look at the phone for too long because it really starts to hurt my eyes
I was wondering it might be tied to the refresh rate. Does anyone know what it is for the phone?
Logging into youtube to watch a video at 1080p does not state '60fps' on this phone, but does on others.
Does this phone have a sub-60hz display?

I get the option on my P20 pro for 1080p 60fps
1080p 60fps
Mine does say 1080p 60fps, the refresh rate on this phone is 60hz, thats weird. did you updated your phone, if not what firmware version you have. i never experienced something similar.

Yeah I mentioned above, 130 firmware
It's not the refresh rate of the screen. It's probably because you have such a wallpaper that in the lowest brightness setting emits an uncomfortable blue light radiation. The refresh of the screen is just fine. As for YouTube, it supports 60fps if the source video provides it. I've noticed the same thing in the watercolour theme when the brightness settings where in the lowest point inside a very dark room. Apart from that situation, my screen is super confi in every light situations. (and when i changed me theme for a darker one, even that problem was solved)

Ahh I see. What a weird behaviour.
It's worth noting though that it's uncomfortable to look at on all brightness levels and with the use of eye comfort mode.
I'm starting to think it's just my eyes.
But on my many other devices I don't get the same problem
If your internet is kinda slow, youtube could remove the 60fps option for you.v
For me, I only noticed the irritating wave length emission only at the lowest brightness setting in watercolour wallpaper. It may have something to do with the specific colour and the lowest possible brightness setting. I must note, that it has a very low brightness setting as a phone. That's a good thing at night. My oneplus didn't go as dark as p20.

Ever since I got my phone it was able to playback 60fps YouTube videos. My firmware is currently (.130) Keep in mind it was still able to playback 60fps videos with older firmware.
You can always try going to www.testufo.com and see what refresh rate is this playing in the test.
With my Razer it shows as 120Hz but you should see 60Hz showing up.
With my Asus tablet P01MA it shows up as 30Hz.
Of course it's 60hz

This exact same thing happened to me with my Mate 10 Pro. It really hurts my eyes in such a bad way that I have blurry vision after looking at it, and some weird head aches. There is something wrong with these phones. I just ordered the Mate 20 pro but I think I will send it back. This needs more investigation.

4K Video-limit

I'm considering buying the Note 9.
I am gonna use it for mobile journalism - recording video, audio and edit it on the phone.
Is it true that samsung has a 5 minute limit for 4k-video? If so, are there a way to bypass that?

It will stop recording. The limits are to prevent over heating.

So hoping that someone will show up in here Who have tried it out
I have 3 note 9s . I just read this thread and i was like eff it ill use one of them to test this.
I loaded up the camera and set the exposure and focus to lock. set the video to 4K max bit rate and resolution. Enabled all the settings to try and test the app.
...both times i went to record video the phone would lockup. I had to force close it both times , i uninstalled after that.

Hey check out this post on XDA it will answer your query https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/themes/zero-camera-mod-bitrates-jpg-hdr-af-t3625795

Any way to force 60Hz refresh rate on a per app basis?

I have an app (Kodi) that won't work on a 90Hz refresh rate. The devs of Kodi have been made aware but they say they won't be supporting anything over 60Hz. I'd rather not have to lower the refresh rate of my entire phone for just 1 app. Does anyone know of a way to force a 60Hz refresh rate on a per app basis?
Thanks!
It's supposed to be adaptive unless you go into the developer settings and force it

Leia doesn't work but Kodi 17.6 works in 90hz. Reported from OP7 Pro users
Edit: this app sounds perfect... https://beebom.com/set-apps-60hz-90hz-oneplus-7-pro/

Ahh sorry about that. When I read the article I just saw it was developed for the OnePlus 7 Pro.. not that it was only compatible with it. Only option you have is 17.6 it seems.
You could use Tasker with root to disable Smooth Display whenever you open the app.

High Brightness Mode WITHOUT Rooting??!

Does anyone who already has the 5 (or know someone that does) know whether or not High Brightness Mode is FINALLY accessible WITHOUT having to root??
If so, please let us know! I just pre-ordered the phone 2 weeks ago, and it will be my first Pixel. Really hoping they allow this!! :fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance!!

Ok. Disappointing, but not surprising. lol
Thanks!
At least they made it brighter this year. The Pixel 4's MAX brightness when Auto Brightness is enabled is 610 nits, where the 5's is 670. I still wish it was in the 800-900s (or more) region though. But at least they improved it.
