Slow Fingerprint Unlock - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

Hi,
I am using PE+ on my Redmi K20 pro and I just love the clean stock experience. However, there is one thing which really bugs me a lot. The fingerprint unlocking is not very good.
The unlocking speed and result is not always the same. Sometimes, the device gets unlocked instantly, but most of the times it takes longer to unlock the device. Sometimes it doesn't unlock at all and I need to place the finger again. I removed the saved fingers and re-registered my thumbs multiple times, but the result is the same. I am not using any type of screen guard and I am not sure if the FP reader is slow on K20 pro or if it is the custom ROMs where the FP reader works slowly (as I unlocked the BL and flashed PE+ the moment I received my device. Hence couldn't test the fp speed on stock MIUI rom). I am not using any custom kernel. I would appreciate if someone could help clearing my doubt.
Thank you in advance.

Yeah you're right, fingerprint unlocking in custom aosp based roms is comparatively slower than stock miui.. however it's getting refined with each update. Thanks to our beloved and respected developers.

Also I would suggest you to flash Quantic-illusion-Raphael-231020.zip and dtbo_K20Pro_(Q)_72hz.img
The smoothness will increase and you'll love it.

I've been told that the release of the source code for the Mi9T Pro FoD will be released in a couple of months, after that custom ROM devs can incorporate that and things should go smoother. So, we just need to wait for a few more months..

What is the benefits of Oreo?

I still haven't revived Oreo update here in Thailand. When it is released, before I install it, I'm curious what is the benefit of installing Oreo? Note 8 already does everything it's supposed do, will this update make anything better or provides any new features?

significantly worse battery backup and lags and bugs here and there..and that's pretty much about it...
Surprise surprise. That's why I have stuck to 7.1.1 and rooted the device.
Every new update to any Samsung device introduces bugs and kills battery life. Personally it offers little advantage and I'm not the least bit interested in upgrading.
Why waste time changing something that works well just for the sake of it?
-New Lockscreen clocks
-AOD is now better optimised
-boots up quicker
-support for new bluetooth audio codecs like AAC
-gif support in Samsung Keyboard
-you can now restart the iris scan if ever it initally failed to scan by tapping an icon in the lower quarter of the screen instead of the status bar area
-MUCH better notification management system
Many more small tweaks that make the overall experience better!

What do you mean? Oreo didn't lock down the BL on Exynos, and it was already locked on most Snapdragons.

No lags, bugs, or noticeable battery drain here, and I'd be the first to say so. Careful about 'reports'...half the time they've done something else like dirty flash, installed mods, etc. and blame the wrong culprit.

Ok but the problem is with rmm on your specific device model/region, not Oreo itself. I have a different model and OEM is unaffected by Oreo for me (oem unlock toggle is still there). People have rmm issues even on Nougat. It doesn't mean you have to upgrade to Oreo if course, but Oreo is not the reason for your issues.
I updated and have been seeing the lag. Deleting emails takes like 5 secs now after hitting delete.
Iris recognition is a lot faster.

For me, the key reason for updating to Oreo was support for the Sony LDAC Bluetooth codec. I have the WI-1000X and the MDR-1000X headphones and can now stream audio to these via LDAC, instead of APTX.
Apart from that, as mentioned by previous posters, notifications have received a major overhaul. Also, I have not seen any performance dip after the update -- I flashed the France ROM via ODIN, without doing a factory reset or starting afresh.
I am never far away from a wireless charging pad, so don't know if the battery life has gone for a toss after Oreo.
I think that people should be more careful when posting negative or unconfirmed issues, as other poster said, some people get troubles when dirty flashing or installing firmwares other than official OTA ones

Agreed. Bone stock VZW Note 8 here, had it since pre-order. Oreo update came today and so far it's only been faster with no issues. It added some nice Bluetooth audio options in Developer Options.
I flashed the official Oreo rom so I didn't do a OTA and it works fantastic for me.
Overall performance is a lot better
Features like PIP are great
Battery is better
Waaaay better notifications
And a lot of other small improvements.
I think people that have issues with Oreo simply did a OTA

Basically avoid all x.0 software releases.
Goes for every software...
Samsung is already testing 8.1 on the note 9 so I will just wait for that to be ported.
It will bring new features and much better stability.

Agreed, I've almost always had the same experience in the past. The bugs usually get worked out in x.1. Not much different with 8.0, I pretty much immediately went back to 7.1.1.
Been on Oreo for 11 days now. For the average user there is some noticeable minor visual change in the UI. Other than that the phone feels and performs about the same. Nothing has changed on my usage.

Xiaomi Mi8 on 3 UK network

Hello, I'm looking for an opinion on this phone. I have had an offer through my carrier to upgrade early, and am interested in this device. This is aimed at members who have bought through the 3 network in the UK.
What's the software experience like?
IS GOOGLE PAY WORKING? (Important)
Are there ads everywhere?
Is there any major drawbacks?
Have you felt the need to modify your phone, or have you just installed some 3rd party apps?
Hopefully I can gain a opinion. I'm coming from a Huawei Mate 9, which is running Oreo 8.0 with EMUI 8.0 on top.
Thanks for your time
3 UK is selling BRANDED devices which aren't running official Xiaomi firmware. So you won't get timely updates. Apparently 3 UK take forever to release updates.
Use the search function it's come up a couple times.
Hey, I bought the Mi 8 from Three UK two weeks ago. Cheaper than official Mi Store and it came with a Mi Band 3.
I didn't know before but apparently all Xiaomi phones from Three come with a Vendor ROM. It's the global ROM modified by Three. I have not seen any app or specific config for Three on it, but as a vendor ROM all updates need to be "approved" by Three before a release, and yes they are very slow on this. That's annoying. I'm waiting to flash the Official ROM, to receive updates directly from Xiaomi.
I liked the device, the screen is very good, battery lasts 2 days on average usage, camera is amazing, very well built phone.
I thought that MIUI would be very different from stock Android, but not really. My previous phone was a OnePlus 3, very close to stock, but MIUI is intuitive, easy to use, it has indeed extra apps (for gallery, cleaner, security, etc) but some are useful. You don't have an app drawer, but I installed the Poco launcher and it works perfectly.
I don't use Google Pay, but I believe you can use without problems, I have the app installed.
There are ads in some Mi apps but you can easily set to hide them.
My opinion, I recommend the phone. But if you want to pay it in full, buy it from Mi Store UK. You'll have all the warranty and official firmware installed. If you want to go for a contract, you have the option to stick with the Three firmware or flash the official one afterwards (I bought a pay as you go phone because I'm not on Three network, so I'm waiting the cooling period from Xiaomi to unlock it and flash the official ROM, I'm sure that will avoid the warranty, but to be honest I never needed to use it on any phone, so I'm fine with it).
Cheers man, if you have any questions let me know.

Got mine the other day, phone is okay, software is terrible, I have debloated as much as I can, also network seems alright with Three. What I'm really annoyed with is the lack of HD video streaming. I was aware that Netflix didn't work, but literally all other apps only display SD content which is a disgrace on a HDR 10 compliant screen.

Thanks for your input, how exactly do/are you going about flashing the official firmware?
And yes I will be buying through 3, not outright, but as a contract.
I'm not exactly a complete noob, as I used to tinker quite a bit, but with Sony phones, flashing ROMs, rooting, but that was back in ICS-Marshmallow days. I was gonna mod my mate 9 but then Huawei blocked doing anything.

Hey, basically I'm following these steps:
1) Apply for the unlock via Xiaomi unlock tool, you can find it at: h t t p s :/ / en.m i u i.com/unlock/
Usually it takes 360hrs to complete. After that time you can unlock the bootloader.
2) Download the Mi 8 Global ROM (fastboot version) and the Mi Flash Tool at: h t t p : / / e n .miui.com/a-234.html
3) Flash the ROM using the flash tool selecting "clean all and lock". This is the important part because it will re-lock the bootloader afterwards. So you will have the global official ROM with a locked device (important to use google pay, bank apps, etc).
Here is a guide that might be helpful: h t t p s : / / w w w .technobuzz.net/re-lock-bootloader-on-any-xiaomi/
I'm planning to do this during next week, when the 360hrs period expires.
I heard from guys on the Xiaomi forum that it's possible, so I'm quite curious to check it out.
I keep you updated if it was successful or not!

Hello,
I bought mine through Argos ( UK mi 8 pro) I will not purchase Xiaomi again, The camera is at best only average. Yes it has, (so called) top specs but it fails on the basics.
I'm so very disappointed.
Hey! I have a Mi8 from three. I just unlocked the bootloaded and flashed the standard global rom over the top of the Three one and clean and relocked it and it's great.
I'd say go for it!

Hi. I've been looking for this information for a WHILE man. It drove me nuts not having MIUI 11 after all this time. Will try flashing the rom via fastboot. THANKS!
does anyone use xiaomi mi8 on three uk network ?? can you say what your apn setting is? I was able to launch xiaomi mi8 running volte + wifi calling. but lately I have a problem with coverage. 4g speed is tragically weak/slow .. I have max 6mb / s where in the same place the iphone 8plus is 20mb / s ..
I checked on speedtest.net with the same server. From what i noticed xiaomi mi8 works only showing 4g there is no 3g where iphone 8plus has better internet even for 3g

Flashing Global Rom
Hi. I have just bought an Mi8 off ebay which is originally from three UK and has a locked bootloader then the three global MIUI ROM. Can someone definitely confirm that if I unlock the bootloader and flash the latest global ROM using miflash and relock the bootloader it won't brick. I've only ever had Xiaomi phones from China so have never relocked the bootloader when flashing roms. This phone is for my wife and I'd like to just give her a regular global ROM with bootloader locked if possible as she won't want to tinker with the phone and just wants something stable and reliable. Thanks.

Why isn't this phone more popular?

It has OLED, popup camera, underscreen FP, and the price is amazing
So why is the scene so small? so little ROM support?
Just asking

I'm asking the same questions. I mean, not even the newer XT has it all.
But perhaps because of it got squished by tons of new devices this year, devices that is given more promotion funds thus more the hype.
I just bought this device few days ago. I waited a couple of months so that the price dropped. Got this for basically USD$200
Weird because the XT and X2 are everywhere on youtube, maybe realme stopped production because of costs? that popup camera cant be cheap to make
I was about to buy it but I heard the stock ROM is reaaaaally bad, did realme say if its going to get official android 10?
And again if there was better custom ROM support I would buy this in a second

Make sense. They must be loosing money on this device, thus they ditched the pop up cam and return to the drop.
But for me the stock ROM is rock solid. For the first time, I kept coming back to the stock ROM rather than all of the custom ROMs I've tried. Not that the custom ROMs are bad, it is just I keep on missing features of the stock ROM.
That said, I do wish that more dev would come in and create more and better custom ROMs for this great device.
???
It's been months since device has been handed to developers but still I can't see any great support except lineage os by @SagarMakhar

Then don't buy the phone... It's pretty simple.
This phone is amazing in every respect and the lack of development is not an issue. If it is for you, but something else.
personally i tested all custom rom for lots of phones for 5 years
mokee it s pretty fast, but also very similar to lineage os. in term of stability and long term performance its not the best, depend by developer of rom.
the best rom ever build is omnirom or rom based. the most stable and smoothest rom ever tried even for long term usage it doesnt lag or slowdown.
the animations are so smooth and costant without fps drop. i use tool to measure it. even touch latency is so low ( when you open a background app you dont have to wait like lots of aosp roms). THIS ROM WORKS FLAWLESSY BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE FEATURES IS VERY WELL BUILD AND IMPLEMENTED, NO EXPERIMENTAL THINGS).
NOW FOR ROG 2:
I REALLY HOPE SOMEONE BUILD AN OMNIROM 9 OR WAIT FOR ANDROID 10 SOURCES AND BUILD OMNI 10, BUT I REALLY HOPE FOR AT LEAST SOME ANDROID 9 RELEASES SINCE SOURCES FOR STOCK ROM ARE OUT AND TPWR WORKS
forget this phone if you are into custom rom , i waited forever for the rog phone 1 development but yeah, there is nothing there.
i though there will be some development in rog phone 2 as the price cheaper for tencent edition , seems like this phone will get the same fate as rog phone 1.

Well I have always been of the mindset of "Never say Never" so maybe something pops up. I still get to look forward to Android 10 in the future, so at least there is that. The phone rocks as is anyways, but a custom ROM option would never hurt.

Coming from Oneplus 7 pro. Omni was noticeably slower, lacked features, buggy and less battery friendly than OOS. I have a WW rog 2 and i don't think that software is bad. It is good, close to stock Android and with many useful features. Really no need for custom software at this point imo.. Asus did a good job.
Waiting for Android 10..

Is incredible then ASUS do not pay some dev to come here and create an TWRP, Custom Kernel and Mokee ROM. That's the only reason I do not buy that phone, and that only reason I need buy chineses OnePlus or Xiaomi. When have Mokee custom ROM, Custom Kernel and TWRP I will buy that device 1TB
At the moment I will stay with Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro Premium 512GB for $500 I prefer the taiwanese but later then I got Zenfone 3 Deluxe 6GB without dev I am waiting for ASUS be a player again

Email the CEO at https://www.asus.com/us/support/callus
calling for then pay dev put custom kernel, mokee rom and TWRP
It's unacceptable for me to have to buy cell phones from Chinese companies because ASUS is not dedicated to being the best at software like it's in hardware. I emailed the CEO in the US now complaining, they should pay an independent DEV to put custom rom, custom kernel and TWRP since they don't invest in advertising and their cell phones are no longer competitive like Chinese spying on their users. subsidized by the communist party

personally i tested all custom rom for lots of phones for 5 years
mokee it s pretty fast, but also very similar to lineage os. in term of stability and long term performance its not the best, depend by developer of rom.
the best rom ever build is omnirom or rom based. the most stable and smoothest rom ever tried even for long term usage it doesnt lag or slowdown.
the animations are so smooth and costant without fps drop. i use tool to measure it. even touch latency is so low ( when you open a background app you dont have to wait like lots of aosp roms).

Best rom doesn't exist. [2]
The best rom is the one you decide to be the best.
Personally, I really prefer original and untouched stock rom and this is the best rom for me.

But which custom rom option would be the most table with all the phones features working?
I mean I was reading about the pixel experience based on android 10 and got all exicted reading about the it and than boom some one mentioned that you cannot use your dual sim cards. Duh. It's a phone I bought it primarily for dual sim and dedicated sdcard. If that is not working why bother at all? Seemed to me like a rather important detail.
I prefer to stay stock rom if posssible since that should have all the sensors and hardware working. But the this is my first Mi and I find the MIUI bit of a challange (and ugly) . I cannot even use the mi remote if I refuse to login to my mi account. So no mi remote. And it feels a bit slower than my umidigo A5 pro from 2019 that has a MT6763 core 4 gb ram and 32gb running vanilla android 9 os.
That older phone just feels way faster than this one with better specs. I suspect it's because of miui. But it could be android 10 is just slower.
Anyway as time passes by I seem to beable to fix all the important issues. The most recent one was miui killing everything without any solution. So all my little gadgets that make miui usable for me stopped working with in hours.
I hope thats fixed too.
But if not it would be nice to know if there is a good stable as vanilla as possible rom out there that actually works or which one gets closest to this utopia?

I use a ROM pixel and so far I have not seen any problems on redmi note 9. It sees the SIM cards, you can hardly worry about anything
