galaxy s20 fe (att) disable system updates - Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Questions & Answers

i got the s20 fe a couple of weeks ago and (since i cant root it) used adb to uninstall a lot of bloatware, e.g. bixby, samsung health, kids, and about 30 other that i could see.
the one thing that i still need to do is stop system updates. i just got forced an inescapable update this weekend.
it frustrates me to no end that samsung/att force users to update willy nilly. i have had updates on an older phone forced overnight without my input and killed my alarm and caused me a great deal of headaches at work, so i have been burned.
i had checked 'apply updates when phone restarts' in developer options, made no difference to the update.
i have seen advice to disable: com.sec.android.soagent and com.wssyncmldm. i had uninstalled soagent and do not have wssyncmldm at all, and still got the update.
while the notification for update was on, i have looked at the process list and could not recognize which of the PID was for it so i can kill it and research further.
does anyone know what i need to disable/uninstall to stop updates/checking for updates/notifications for update ?
thank you

i just received another notification for update... can someone please advise how to stop that please

Security Policy Updates notification

Hello everyone,
Recently, I've been getting this notification every couple of days. It says:
Security enhancements for Android protects your device and information by preventing flawed or malicious apps from bypassing security features.
To ensure the most up-to-date protection, allow automatic updates to the security policy by accepting the terms and conditions on the next screen.
I take it if I want a future in rooting my device and unlocking its bootloader, I should continue saying no to this. Has anyone else seen this appear on their device?

Yup, I've been getting them every few days too. Just keep dismissing them and make sure to not do any firmware updates either. You never know when a root will be available and if these updates will affect it. :good:
Is there no way to prevent this notification from coming back? I keep dismissing it and I have unchecked the box in the security settings too... It's starting to get annoying.

I don't know of any way to prevent it from coming back. I've just gotten in the habit of declining it every time it comes up.

I click accept and did not popup since then. Do't see any changes in my phone or anything. I had this on my S4 when i updated to KitKat. I did accept then too.
If you go to Settings -> Security -> Security Policy Updates then you can turn off automatic updates

Update
I want to believe it's something more than it may be(speculation, but possible).
I keep getting more persistent reminders, more than once a day to do this. Samsung may be letting AT&T know that there are known exploits that could be problematic and in turn AT&T may be pushing more aggressively. I would at first get it every reboot and now i get it more than once a day.
At first I was only getting them once a few days. Now I get them every few hours

I think I'm still on the original security only thing I changed outside of unflagging the checkbox was going to ART havent seen it try at all
I (like OP), just assume they're trying to get us to "pre-approve" their updating of the SELinux policies, patching the OS, or some other hardening features to prevent future rooting (and yeah, giving them the benefit of the doubt, probably fight "real" malware too, like it claims, which I'll take my chances on for now). So, since it seems the only way to turn off the nagging notification (until we root) is to blindly accept whatever it is, I just ignore it.
Well... Except for (obviously) searching here to see if you guys are seeing the same thing.
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but is there any further information on this? I'm currently rooted and started receiving the updates. I declined them a couple times and then decided to uninstall the service with Titanium. I'm afraid that accepting the security update will ruin my current root.

I've accepted the updates since I got my phone, was able to root and hasn't messed with root access. A rooted phone with out of date security updates seems like a prime target to me.
Freeze security policy update in titanium backup
I had an update forced on my phone but it failed. I know they're trying to block my root access. How can I disable the ota update?

To stop all OTA and Security Updates, freeze the following:
AT&T Software Update.
FWUpgrade.
LocalFOTA.
Samsung Push Service.
Security Policy Updates.
There was a way to go into /system/priv-apps to disable it. I did it when we first got our S5's but forget how to. Trying to find the thread for.you guys.
I dug and dug and think I ran across the thread. Instead of posting it I'll tell ya how to fix this. I used root browser to accomplish this, any root browser or explorer should work. Go into /system/priv-apps and look for SPDClient.Apk. I just renamed them. I added .don'tcheck at the end of them and I'm good again. So it would look like this: SPDClient.Apk.Dontcheck. I did the same for the odex file right below it as well just in case. Hope I could help!! Throw me a thanks if I did! You may also do the same thing with the system updater as well. I prefer to rename things instead of disabling them or freezing them. Makes it easier to go back and change it back later if I need to.
did not lose root
I updated the security policies on my rooted and unlocked G900A without any problems. The phone is still rooted and unlocked.
I used to freeze Security Policy updates with TB pro but decided to take a chance on updating them for security reason. I too see a rooted phone with old security policies as a prime target.
I didn't put automatic update on though. I prefer to come here first before applying them just to be on the safe side.

AdChoice Ads Randomly Popping Up - Please Help Me!

So, I am suddenly getting these AdChoice ads popping up on my Galaxy Note 8 (VZW).
They pop up all the time, out of nowhere, no matter what I'm doing on my device.
I haven't really installed anything new lately.
I've updated the firmware with the latest security update (OTA). And, I do recall my phone freezing up while taking a video (stock camera) around the time this may have begun to occur.
How can I get these annoying ads to stop?!?!?!
Must be from an app you have installed.

skip the guesswork and do a master reset FDR AND SETUP AS NEW DEVICE with no backups restored until the ads disappear , because if you restore all it will repeat ads. https://thedroidguy.com/2018/05/galaxy-note-8-keeps-showing-ad-pop-ups-mobile-data-turns-off-calls-issues-1076787
LOOK in link.
and look at this video FIRST. theres no instant solution, but i provided a start. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoD9lHNw0nQ
The security update didnt cause it, and you cant uninstall that.

This.
OP, skip the factory reset suggestion and narrow down the problem to one of your apps. Think games, etc. Factory reset is last resort, and truly overkill for a single app. Besides, if you dont narrow it down now you will likely end up in the same position anyways down the line . Better to resolve it now. Cheers.

Google Play shows phantom updates on Note8

Hello, maybe it's more general Q but it happens only on my Note8 so I write here. Sorry if I placed this thread wrong.
Since yesterday GP started to show updates that didn't take place. On my last updates list it claims some apps were updated lately even though I did not update them myself.
I have automatic updates switched off. Most of such apps are Samsung apps but not limited to (btw, I have auto updates off in Galaxy Apps as well).
Yesterday I've noticed it for the first time, having plenty of apps with "updated" status. I cleared GP cache, then data, and of course all info disappeared. But today it started again. E.g. it shows Samsung Experience Service as updated 10hrs ago. There was no new version lately, neither I updated this app (I did but some time ago, after new version was available in Galaxy Apps).
I admit I tend to install Samsung apps from Galaxy Apps. Now all these apps are shown in app manager as downloaded from GP.
It's all a bit strange to me.
Did any of you experience same behavior?
Yes, I have auto updates off, but for some reason, there are apps auto updating, not all with updates available, I am as confused as you
Thanks! This gives me hope there's no serious issue on my side but some general hiccup.
Anyway, this is indeed strange, especially as all mentioned by GP apps were updated some time ago and no new updates are available. So it's not only auto update issue.

Yes, same situation here with auto-updates off. I have a few apps that claim to have been updated recently when a) I don't believe they have, and b) the latest update listed is from some time ago.

Well, in my case, I have seen actually when they update!!, no way to stop them from doing it without cutting internet, really annoying, as some updates are worse than previous versions
It's even worse then, you cannot avoid newest versions... I don't have such issue, I have exactly same as described by Steve. E.g. one app has the last version issued on October 24th and it was updated around that time, over Galaxy Apps. Suddenly Google Play shows it was updated yesterday. And if it wouldn't be funny enough, yesterday GP didn't show this app has been updated . Now system is showing it as downloaded over GP... Someone is playing tricks, Samsung or Google, I don't know. I just hope it's not some freaky virus.
I think this will happen while Google Play verify the installed Apps periodically.
It seems that then the date in the update list will rewriten with the date of the verify check.
But I'm not sure if this is all.

Hm, not in my case. Had this option off as well. I have turned it on, scanned and no other apps appeared on updated list.
Maybe Samsung is forcing us to GP? . For long time updates in both stores do not match. In my case at least by issuing date, sometimes available version too.
I had this issue on my device a week or two ago. I had a whole list of apps that said they were updated 0 seconds ago, some apps that haven't had an update in over a year. It kept showing that throughout the day, no matter what time I went to check the updates. I think it did the same thing the next day, as well, but it's since been fixed and I'm not sure when exactly or how long after or whether it was something I did. I just know it screwed around and it's fine again now.
Maybe just give it some time and it'll go back to normal for you, as well.
Yes, sometimes I see the same thing, apps updated 0 seconds ago or 1 minute ago
I've noticed this as well and I know some of the apps haven't recently been updated. It's a mystery lol.

EMUI 10 Notification issue

Hello everyone, I just wanted to clarify that I used the search and checked all the sis I could
I got some nom notification or in other apps super delayed ones
Emails seem to arrive fine, but especially charts are either delayed or not shown till I open the app
I really love this device but in terms of delivering notifications it had been very unreliable so far, any other tips?
I would gladly trade battery life for timely notifications

If trying all the usual stock methods for app launch and battery saving exclusions for the apps and they're still not working, you need to kill Power Genie
https://dontkillmyapp.com/huawei
Was the same for me with WhatsApp on 9.1, but it seems to be behaving itself so far on 10 and I haven't had to disable it
thank you, another thing that i suspect is maybe i got this issue due to doing a backup and a recovery once i went to emui10 instead of reinstalling everything, but i will try the powergenie thing now
UPDATE: it didnt seem to work..just for a little while, i also noticed likee in another thread that the always on display also stops working after a while.
the cmd told me "success" after the command from the tutorial

Did you reboot the phone?
If not, then would not be a bad idea to factory reset after such a big upgrade
you know what, i will try it with a factory reset, i'm sjust scared that it might be the telekom patch that is coming in due to my carrier sim that always slightly alters the firmware and installs some carrier bloat

Should be able to remove bloat using the same ADB method as PowerGenie
I just wanted to thank you, it really did the trick even without using adb I receive all notifications since the rest, no matter if the phone is idling since an hour
Notification problems
I've just upgraded to android 10 and my hangouts, WhatsApp and Facebook messenger won't display notifications until I open app I've tried all suggestions above and it didn't work any suggestions?
After the lastest updates of HMS, I started receiving notifications.
I'm having the same problem...my notifications won't come on until I open the app or a few occasions I've noticed all my notifications came at once around 11am??? This has happened a few times...

Weird behaviour from Samsung Apps

Peeps,
I am going to go with this chronically, although i am not sure if things are connected to each other.
1. A few months back, Watch didnt pair with Phone, i noticed that Galaxy Wearable disappeared from my phone. I manually installed the APK as the update wasnt available on the stores.
2. Again, past two months, i kept randomly losing my alarms in Samsung Clock...although, never manually updated this one.
3. Yesterday, i get a notification from Galaxy Wearable that i should install Samsung Health if i want to sync the stats between the watch and phone/cloud. Well, i updated the app to get Dark Mode cause the update does not show up on the store. How the hell did it delete itself?
All this, coming after some shady Chinese company detected in Device Care (not anymore, i know) and randomly receiving the Find My Mobile notification (i am one of them).
Phone is not rooted, and i am VERY sure i do not have any malware on it.
Samsung health got uninstalled, seemingly by itself, on my Note too. Two days ago.
