Pixel 5 Front Camera Focus - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Hi!
Looked a Gsmarena review about Pixel 5 and they mention that Pixel 5 selfie camera doesnt have focus issues anymore like horrible Pixel 4A, but other review By DxoMark said that its still slightly out of focus in close up selfies. Hows the sharpness/focusing stacks against Pixel 4? Do you need to still outstretch your arm to be in focus? I had Pixel 4 and i thought it was broken because blurry selfies, now im willing to buy Pixel 5 but the frontcamera quality is my main concern as pixel 4 was so bad in my opinion. Overall Pixel 5 looks perfect phone for my fits but i will not pay 650€ for potatoquality frontcam anymore.

I can't compare it to the Pixel 4, but I used to own a Pixel 3 which had the autofocus feature on the front facing camera. The Pixel 5 does indeed get a little soft in the details if you hold your phone too close to your face when taking selfies. Just make sure your arm is extended to ensure proper focus. It's a little annoying but probably not a deal breaker for any normal usage.

I just HAVE to ask!

It appears that to the vast majority of modern day uber mobiles that the camera is the most important factor?
I notice that some are actually going to change from the SGS8+ to the Note 8 'just' for the camera?
Cards on the table. I know next to zero regarding photography and very very seldom, if ever, use the camera on my mobile. I find the most attractive extra as sound production however...
Can some of you camera experts inform me how a pocket camera compares in quality of picture to the Note 8?
I would think, I don't know, that my Canon DSLR produces better photographs? How would my little pocket Sony camera compare?
Just how good is the quality of pictures produced by the Note 8 (also the SGS8+ that I own)? Is it just a matter of convenience or do these new mobiles produce truly 'good' photo's?
Thanks for your replies.

The S8+ takes amazing pictures. I haven't bought a good real camera for about 6 or 7 years, but I am sure it still takes superior pictures to the best smartphone cameras. But it is bulky, easily broken (ex dropped it a week after I bought it and broke the lcd display on the back although you can still see through the cracks enough to use it) and a PITA to carry around. So I have little need personally for an actual camera. It was $850 to boot and I wish I had never bought it.
The Note 8 and it's dual rear cameras are a definite step up from the S8+. The S8+ has a GREAT camera, low light especially. But the dual shooters in the rear are very, very nice from all accounts on the Note 8. If I can actually get $425 for my Note 7 on trade in from Sammy for the Note 8 I will get the Note 8 and sell my S8+. Otherwise I will not take a 400 to 500 dollar beating to switch from my S8+ - which is a very nice phone - to the Note 8. I do miss the S Pen and a bit bigger screen is always nice. I am a tad concerned about going down in battery size - the S8+ has a 3500 mah battery and smaller display, the Note 8 has a 3300 mah battery and a bit larger display.
Anyway, IMO, the camera upgrade alone is not enough for me to switch. The trade in of $425 for my Note 7 would be enough IF I can actually get $425 from Samsung for my Note 7.
Dipends on what that "pocket camera" is, if it's an m4/3 like the Olympus OM-D or even the Canon EOS-M. i don't think Note 8 can compete with those cameras. But if it's like those small Sony "Point and Shoot" cameras, it does stand a chance of being at par if not beating the picture quality of what the Note 8 can produce.
The f1.7 lens is a huge plus because of it's lowlight capabilities and of course the bokeh effect (where the subject in front is focused and the background is somehow blurred). from what i've seen Note 8 also has an Optical Zoom which is waaaaay better than digital zoom IMO.
All in all i think it will be a great move even if you're coming from the S8+, aside from the camera, the S-Pen can offer a looooot of things that will be helpful for productivities (and picture editing too! haha)
I have Canon DSLR and it does have little better picture quality, but: I don't carry my DSLR with me unless I specifically plan to take a lot of pictures and I have my phone with me all the time. Also in good light, which is most of the time I take pictures, it's hard to tell difference. My S8 is as fast at focusing as my DSLR, S8 have higher FPS for action photos, takes better video in higher resolution (4k) than my DSLR. In other words I use S8 camera most of the time, even if I have my DSLR and use Canon only for specific type of shooting (night, portrait and zoom). Note 8 has the same cam as S8 plus x2 zoom, so better bokeh, but for portrait and telephoto DSLR it is still much better, for everything else I prefer phone, if only for it's size. In my case it's not the cam I'm upgrading from S8 to Note 8, since addition of x2 zoom won't improve capabilities over S8 that much, it's the pen and I suspect it's similar with many others.
Thank you all for your kind and informative replies. I appreciate your time.
One point. Whats a "Bokeh"?
Ryland
the camera is important but it just depends on what your gonna do with the pictures...most will just share on social or just look at them on there phone..i havent seen a bad picture since i had a nextel flip phone.
for me the s-pen is the main selling point and of course the size of the unit
I would say the camera features are not important to the "uber mobiles" as you describe but more like the last item that can truly be updated / differentiated on a device for maximum upsurge with minimum cost.
That's all vendors have left to try and create hype for the next flagship.

Pixel 3 worth upgrading to Pixel 5?

Hi guys,
Have a question for those who have access to the new Pixel 5. I'm currently using a Pixel 3 and am considering an upgrade to the new Pixel 5. But I'm concerned with the Snapdragon 765G that they have decided to put into this phone. From my understanding the 765G performs slower when compared to the 845 found in the Pixel 3. And even the camera sensors are the same between the 2 phones. So I'm just wondering if the upgrade is worth it or if I should wait for next year.
Has anyone had any issues when it comes to the processing speed of the 765G?
Obviously very early doors to try and compare them but...
I have a pixel 3xl and the pixel 5.
Feels the exact same for everything I've tried with it with a couple of exceptions.
Pixel 3XL is slightly quicker opening the edit menu on portrait shots.
Pixel 5 is definitely holding more apps in RAM so less time spent relaunching apps
90hz screen is lovely and makes it feel like the pixel 5 opens and processes things quicker. In reality it's taking the same time, just looks better doing it
Not tried anything more challenging yet like color grading 4k video yet, but I'll try it out later
Pixel 5 camera is better in low light, especially the portrait shots. The wide angle also looks great nearly on par with main shooter

I am in the very same situation, just setting my new 5 up now ?

did you try taking continous shots in potrait and in camera mode? did you get any lag in between shots?

No lag taking photos at all took loads earlier without issue. Just a bit of delay in the photos app to process. Same as pixel 3.
I have a Pixel 5 now and I have my old Pixel 3 still here.
What can I say?... The only things I like about the Pixel 5 better are better battery life, more RAM and aluminium body.
The screen is not brighter, it even seems to have a more yellow-ish tint while the Pixel 3 display was just bright white (side to side comparison with full display brightness).
The speakers are awful, especially the one under the glass. It sounds so tinny and has very low volume, I have serious problems hearing the caller when it's getting a bit louder around me. The "stereo speakers" are a joke when watching a video. compared to the down firing speakers the one under glass is barely audible.
The full screen display is not very convenient for daily usage imo. I always tend to "hold" the phone on the chin bezel with my pinky finger and it happens often that it touches the screen and closes the app or changes to a different one.
As good as the P5 feels in the hand, and how good the camera is..... I like my P3 (not xl) more in the end. I even like the P3's bezels more than the full screen of the P5. (and I still didn't get over the punch hole for the camera)

Interesting to hear about your screen brightness. My P5 is quite a bit brighter than my 3XL when both on max brightness. Both are white with no sign of tint. Maybe you have a bad panel?
Speaker under the glass on my P5 is also poor.
I get the bezels points I had gotten used to having the chin and the notch to hold onto!

After some more testing I would say that the P5 doesn't have a slight yellow tint but the P3 (not XL) has a blue tint. I think now the P5 display looks a bit more natural.
Surprisingly both displays look the same in Nightlight Mode.
I just hope there will be an update to fix the speaker's low volume.
The 90Hz display isn't a big deal as I thought. I can use my P3 without even noticing the difference in normal usage (of course I notice it when I look for the differences). I think the P5 would be fine with 60Hz, or they should've gone for 120Hz.
Battery life so far is fantastic. (compared to the P3)

Can't see them changing the speaker volume much to be honest.
On screen refresh I guess everyone is different. My P5 is a lot smooth than my 3XL when scrolling Twitter. If I compare the P5 to my friends S20 on 120hz I can't see a difference. On my PC though I can tell the difference between 120 and 144hz! Maybe the size of the screen makes it less obvious to me?
yes, when using side by side it's absolutely noticable.
I wanted to say that it's not that important to me when it comes to normal daily usage, because I just don't notice it anymore (or I don't give it attention anymore after a while).
I also have a 144Hz display for my computer, and that is a difference you can always tell, without having a 60Hz display side by side with it. But I think the G-Sync (or any sync technology) here is the more important feature.

Absolutely couldn't agree more with everything you said.
If my pixel 3 didnt have a broken camera and charging port I'd keep it.
Battery lasts about twice as long on the PIxel 5 - I miss the "blue'ish" screen and "2-button" mode though.

Photo details lower quality. Compared to 4xl

Pulled a sidegrade over from my 4xl to the 5. All was good until I started playing with the camera and images.
In almost every shot micro detail is worse than my pixel 4xl.
This can be seen in things like text or tree branches. The wide angle is even worse. Is this a software issue? Or the difference in dedicated processing chip?
My bet the reason is the lack of telephoto lense. (Which was replaced by the wide angle lense that most of people were asking for last year)
I mean if you are talking about doing zoom in the area of the photo where you put all the focus. Then, yes, definitely must be the telephoto lense.

Sorry, I'm talking about standard camera shots from the main sensor.
I have returned my 5 now but in side by side comparison the 4xl had more details preserved than the pixel 5 when looking up close.
For example I took a photo of a desk with a ruler on it from about 6ft away and the 4xl preserved the millimetres markings where as the 5 was blurred.
Another was longer distance shots of trees or anything that had finer branch like or line details and again the 4xl was cleaner and sharper than the 5.
On a screen side by side it's hard to tell. Untill you blow the picture up.
There's a lot of camera issues starting to pop up. Coming from 3XL I also noticed a bit of softness. I've also noticed that low light portrait photos and normal front facing photos in low light are not detailed at all .Slow mo resolution video is not up to what it's advertised too. Hopefully there is a camera update coming soon.

Well I hope I'm not wrong with this. But that's exactly what I was talking about.
We can agree that the telephoto was improving photos with Zoom (like 3X Zoom) and in some other camera modes.
But I'm also thinking that the telephoto was slightly improving the normal 1X shots in the "focus area" of the photo. I believe some telephoto lense sample was added to the HDR+ shots.
I might be wrong but I think I read something about that.

Pixel 5 vs Pixel 4 comparison and review

I'm putting together a review and comparison video for the Pixel 4 vs Pixel 5 and may add the s20 FE. I am wondering if anyone has topics they would like to see gone over. Just let me know in the comments if there is a specific comparison you'd like to see and I will include it.
Well if you want my personal subjective summary Vs my old Pixel 4. In case you want to cover these points:
- Pros: battery efficiency (it's giving me 100% more battery life than my Pixel 4 with only 1280 more mAh) and fingerprint sensor (I prefer it over the face unlock) and the lower MSRP in €
- Cons: display that sounds hollow on input, worse touchscreen haptic feedback, worse light sensor behaviour in low light, worse top ear speaker. The extra width which makes the 5 with a case a bit more difficult to handle than the 4 with a case. (4 is narrower and easier to one hand).
Many of the cons I mentioned are probably because of the punch hole display
There are a lot of more pros and cons. Those were the ones I experience everyday.

Did face unlock work with a mask?

Question How will the S21 Ultra camera stack up compared to Pixel 5?

Last summer I purchased an Xperia 1 II which I really liked for a lot of reasons - the screen, form factor and feel were all great. Unfortunately, the camera was not up to much and really struggled in low light conditions as well as capturing moving objects. As a camera is one of the top priorities for me in a phone, I made the switch and got the Pixel 5. The camera on the Pixel is brilliant and I am happy enough with the phone for now but the small screen and medium-range specs are definitely a shame.
Having seen some brilliant reviews of the S21 Ultra, my interest has been piqued and I am considering pre-ordering. I am also conscious though that reviews often don't really give a thorough, in-depth review of camera capabilities in different everyday situations (often just focusing on headline specs and flashy new features). Having read the S20 Ultra forum, I noticed a lot of negativity around autofocus, images in low light conditions, images of moving subjects and video quality. This goes back a way but having previously had S6 & S7, I thought the cameras were OK but often a little unnatural/beautified.
Does the S21 Ultra appear to be rectifying these issues and will the camera/video quality be on a par with the likes of Pixel 5 & iPhone 12 Pro Max? For the price of the phone, I would really expect it to be very top end.
It is hard to tell as this is something that very few reviewers focus on, people and pets in mixed light remains Samsung’s kryponite and it is clearly not a hardware issue.
The Pixel sensor is showing it’s age a little but still if I want to pick up a phone take a picture and be confident I’ll get a decent shot then I would currently only really trust the Pixels and iPhone 11/12 line.

Over all it feels me pixel 5 is still
King
I am particularly interested to know how the portrait mode stacks up as this is something I use a lot and has been a real flaw in previous Samsungs. It's going to be a key factor in my decision between S21 Ultra vs Pro Max 12...
