Has anyone given the AT&T apps a good try to see if any of them are good to keep?
I see instructions out there on how to wipe AT&T off of our phone, but haven't seen anybody comment on why they're wiping the apps off besides to "get rid of the AT&T apps".
I'm just wondering if there might not be one or two of the included apps that are actually worthwhile to keep.
I know one I won't be sorry to delete is the mobiTV one. I loaded it up to the welcome screen then had to step away for a couple minutes. When I came back it kindly told me my 2 minute trial was up... LOL nice! So yeah, unless it really is an incredible piece of software worth buying I'll be dumping that one at least.
Many if not all require additional fees and subscriptions, despite free alternatives.
For example, the AT&T navigator app is $10 a month, but Google Maps is free.
There's also the matter of principle... the fact that AT&T made them non-removable is a compelling reason to get rid of them.
The only at&t app worth using is the att my wireless app that you can down load from the market place. It lets you keep track of your minutes usage, data usage, and change your plan.

I agree. Funny thing is, that's the only app AT&T didn't preinstall on the phone IIRC. I guess they expect you to pay money for their crappy services by default (or by mistaken clicks), but don't want you to have a way to track it so easily.

You just staited my two primary reasons.
It is disgusting that AT&T forcefully occupies space on lesser phones with pay apps. Just appalling.
Well ok then, looks like I'll be clearing them all off! lol
i got rid of all my ATT apps lol

I'm not sure if it's an AT&T app, but the music player that comes on our phone is awesome!
I even started a thread asking if there was a way we could extract it or reinstall it after flashing a different rom. Hah. I like it.

This is a Samsung app. We'll get it in new ROMS.
Look at about 1:05 on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3QwvMsBGjE
Yeah I have to say that music app is pretty nice.
Although I just installed one called "Moodagent" that is kind of neat. Haven't had a chance to fully explore it, but it appears to have quite a few features along with the main interface that's a bit gimicky, but cool. It has sliders that you adjust up or down (Sensual, Tender, Happy, Angry, Tempo) and it adjusts the playlist according to the levels you set. Probably old news to everyone else but interesting to me!
everything that is labeled att_nameofprogram is pretty much useless. the other programs like allshare or instant messaging may still be usefull.
Allshare
If you interest in using DLNA, the Allshare app may be a good one to keep. Although, I have one major problem with it: you can only add 1 song at a time to the Queue. What a pain.
But I haven't found any good alternatives yet.
I opened the 'Where' app, and (stupidly) breezed past some part about a monthly charge if I don't cancel. Has anyone else run into this? And if so, do you know how to cancel?
"Where" does AT&T get the idea they can charge for this?
You probably want to call AT&T ASAP to make sure you don't get charged for using the Where app. Also, stop using the included one and download the free one!
Funny story about the Where app:
I had a Nexus One and saw that Where was on a lot of "best app" lists for Android so I went to the market to get it. It was nowhere to be found. After a bit of research, I found some vague explanation about how AT&T had a deal with Where and that they blocked it. This really pissed me off since I paid full price for the N1 with no subsidy from AT&T -- how dare they block apps? Anyway, I found the APK online and installed it.
Later, I rooted my phone and installed the MarketAccess app. Now I could find Where in the Market and installed it from there -- still free of course. When I got the Captivate, the first thing I did was root it. When I saw that Where was pre-installed, I thought "great, now I don't have to jump through hoops to get it." Luckily I saw the warning about being charged, what, $2.99/month to use an app that is free for every user of every other Android phone? I promptly used Titanium Backup to remove the pre-installed version and then used MarketAccess to download the free version from the Market.
The point is that AT&T is really trying hard to charge extra for things that every other Android user gets for free (maps, navigation, Where, etc). Very frustrating. My employer pays for the service on my Captivate and I will be moving my wife's phone (that I pay for) to the Epic 4G at the end of this month after being an AT&T customer for 7 years.
What about AT&T Hot Spots?
I visit Starbucks frequently and occasionally McDonalds. Both offer free WiFi, but require you to check a box and click a button to agree to terms before using it. I know that's not a big deal, but it is a little bit of a hassle especially if I am not planning to use the browser anyway -- I just want to go straight into another app that uses WiFi.
Since I got the Captivate, I've noticed that as soon as I turn on WiFi while at either of these places, I get a notification that says "AT&T Hotspot Detected" or something like that and I am able to use WiFi without having to visit the agreement page in the browser.
Does anyone know whether this app is required for this detection and agreement bypass to function? I have thought about making a backup with Ti Backup, uninstalling, and testing it but am worried that it might not reinstall properly. Also, it might be handy for finding hotspots when traveling -- making it the only useful AT&T pre-installed app.
ATT wifi hotspot app seems to be useful to connect to Attwifi hotspots without having to manually agree to terms
does anyone have a copy of it ?

I have it and will try to make a backup and post it within the next couple of days. It might be Monday before I can do it, unless someone else beats me to the punch.
Update: I still have it on my phone, but it seems that Titaniun Backup only backs up the data, not the APK. I also tried Mybackup Pro with the same result. I have root, so if someone knows how to extract a system app as an APK please let me know. I haven't searched yet, BTW, so if I find out how to do this myself I'll update this post (again).

I swear they are only doing that to mess with us. While it's not hard to completely remove all AT&T ware, it's fairly simple to hide the apps with LauncherPro.

I can't get the Amazon Appstore app to install. It gives me the message "Do you want to install this application? It will get access to:" then a list of areas and boxes for cancel or install. When I click install nothing happens. The cancel box works. (I did check the unknown sources in settings)
If it is being blocked by Google, that would suck.
I'm pretty shure its being blocked by Google.

Not true it's working for me. Go to Amazon& request a new link to be sent to your email.

Thats strange, i was able to do it on my N7. Maybe a reboot of some sort?
Works fine here. Go into Setting>Security and check Allow unknown sources. Go to Amazon web site and follow instructions to download and install. Did that to download an older version of a zombie killing game that works on N7.
Works fine for me. I use it every day to get the free "cr"app of the day.
Try rebooting it then re-installing.
If you're installing it from a previous backup from another device, it most likely won't work (not assuming you are, but just in case...) Like the others said, go to Amazon and get it directly and you should have no problem.
What worked for me was clicking the link for tablets. It says something like "no email or phone number, click here" and that downloaded the APK directly into my system download folder. From there it installed just fine. I had to do this to get it on my Google TV also. It seems to bypass some sort of test since the Google TV isn't officially compatible with it.
I just worked with an Amazon tech, got it to install using by going to this like in the browser on the N7.
http://www.amazon.com/app-email
Works fine now.
Mine installed fine. I used the APK from my phone. Got a bunch of the nicer FAOTD apps working perfectly too.

I find it incredible that everyone is giving Amazon a free pass for contributing to the Android Malware myth.
The fact you have to enable side loading on an Android phone to allow Amazon, means any other malware could also slip in. Using Amazon app store is a REALLY bad idea (plus the fact it's a barren wasteland compared to Google Play, and most of the apps are really out of date versions).
Surely the lure of free versions of old apps is not that strong that you want to open your phone up to allsorts of Android malware nasties?

Bugger the Apps they get games too. Of course only if you're from a certain country.
Majority of the free apps are a joke.
I usually check it every day and realize they're all trash (except maybe 2 apps so far) and then I uninstall it. For some reason I get struck with the idiotic idea that I may be missing out on some good free apps, so I stupidly install it again in hopes of some decent apps...... it never happens

That's what most people think. Once you discover what Amazon are offering for free is basically stuff that deserves to be free anyway, make sure you re-tick the Android security setting and revert back to the proper Android store that Google host.

1. I've never once gotten malware and I always sideload apps. I always leave that setting unticked as do most folks I'm sure.
2. having Amazon app store or any other app store doesn't change your default android Google play store.
You want malware, go download Blackmarket apps or pirate stuff, you'll get it then. I do suggest tho, that everyone should install a malware scanner. Avast, lookout, etc.

What? Side loading doesn't put you at any greater risk of malware. You always choose to install an app, whether you side loaded it or not.
Nothing wrong or risky with downloading the Amazon app store, being able to choose a different app store is one of the best things about android. CHOICE.

Im still primarily using the play store. Doesnt app brain charge a per download fee or something like that even on free apps?

Try GiveMeApps. They don't have any developer fees AT ALL and you have the option of keeping 100% of all of your earnings. You also get to withdraw your money whenever you want using your control panel, not just once a month, once every two weeks, etc. You can also track your downloads and get analytics.
They also have a Tech Blog, YouTube channel, etc. :good:

I use Play Store, Samsung App store, GetJar, Softonic, Opera, BlackBerry, Applandic and Apptoide.
Well by amount of downloads I have next list:
Play Store
BlackBerry
Samsung
Softonic
almost on the same position are GetJar, Opera, Applandic and Apptoide.
By the way, Softonic doesn't ask to submit an app, Play Store link will be enough.
GetJar was good for me when I've tried to promote an app with their promotional service but it's not so good as Appbrain. After I've finished the campaign number of downloads returned to the previous level.
I like SlideMe. I'll add to Play Store too, but right now i don't have a mean to pay those 25$.
That is one time fee and they will charge you nothing from that day? Not even when you withdraw your eranings?

I found Amazon pretty good. I sell there about 33% of what I sell in Google play.
They reduce 30% tax for developer out of the USA, so that's a bummer.
Well...
Started with the Amazon store a month a go. A few sales now and then but I really expected higher sales. I read that people tend to spend more money on the Amazon store than with Google Play but could not really see this myself until now.

I didn't have a good experience at all. Making even the smallest change in the developer console takes week(s) to reflect on the app's page. And my app sales there were almost non-existent. Closed my account.

This is where your marketing comes in. Amazon does well, but it ISN'T play, so you will have to kind of bring your customers there. You already closed your account, so there's no point in talking about it, but did you have YouTube trailers, did you have App Review sites mention where your app is? Did you do Social Media marketing through low cost sites like Fiverr?
These are the routes you're going to have to take if you push apps outside of the main app stores.
Hi,
In case someone is thinking about selling apps on Samsung Apps, here is a little warning...
In other app stores, developers can expect to get 70% of the sales, but on Samsung you barely get 30% of the sales.
There are huge fees, different in every country (sometimes > 90% in some countries) and you are paid more than 6 months after the sales...
OK you may get some interesting sales if you have the chance to get your app promoted, but be warned, most of the cash will go to Samsung agents and commissionaires...

I finally went to Samsung with my free apps. It requires a commercial verified account in order to sell apps. My experience with Samsung is a terrible portal and very long time waiting for updating the apps.

Yes, it worth it, even if the results are now low by far from G Play, But there is less competition and these two markets are like android market 4 years ago. They are growing fast, so if you get your apps on the top there you can expect the same success made by some famous apps on Play Store

Hi all,
Just curious to see if many people out there are running there device without loading up Google services or apps. It interests me to think, what the device would run like if perhaps had alternatives to the Google framework running constantly and other apps in the place of Gmail,Maps etc.....
I see that someone has already attempted this:

What are peoples thoughts, anyone tried this on our Shamu?
Thanks for posting this. That's an interesting article you attached. And yes I am interested in android without Google.
I had considered Ubuntu Touch, but the only phone it's relatively well developed for is the Nexus 4.
It would be interesting if a Dev would pick up Ubuntu Touch development for our device.
question go into the q&a section, not into general. ill ask a mod to move it there.

I don't see the point to be honest. Its nothing I want to try.
In my opinion, all the guy in that article you linked is doing is trading a crocodile for an alligator. The article starts by pointing out Google knows what pics you have in your Gmail. This is true. Then the author proceeds to recommend "App Replacements" that include all different sorts of closed-source apps of unknown origin. Why? At least I know roughly what Google is doing. I have no idea whatsoever what, say, the developer of the maps apps he suggests are going to do with my location data. There's an old adage "stick with the devil know". Don't get me wrong, I mistrust Google and all tech companies, so I keep my music/pics/movies/media on my own servers that I control, not on theirs. Email is too difficult to manage without some help, so they still get that.
All that being said, the easiest way to remove Google would be to build an AOSP rom for your device and don't install the GAPPS package. The device feels like a connected smart calculator, though, and they know it, so there in lies the trade off you're making with them.

I feel the same. Everyone thinks that Google are reading our emails and watching our every move. In reality our emails are indexed (err... That's how SEARCH works) and the data that is collected is fed into a matrix to allow Google to sell advertising based on the fact they can target their campaigns... Its hardly evil. Its not like humans are (or even can) read the data...
Facebook is much more evil, and I let them have data.

Agreed guys.
My curiosity lays in the potential any of any performance gains could be had, what with the occurrence of play services drains etc.
Like you say though, perhaps better the devil we know...

It could be worth a play for those reasons. Your OP did seem to point towards performance, until the link

Aye it's the performance I'm intrigued by....
"Instead of being run-down to ~50% or less at the end of the day, my battery usually has 70%+ of its juice left when placed into its cradle at night, without me changing „my device usage patterns“.
I love flashing custom roms, currently I am on temasek cm12.1. With recent google play service updates I have fell victim to wakelocks etc. caused. I have seemed to put them at bay with disabling services however it makes me wonder, could I live without the google integration? For me, I use gmail, browser and contacts sync - but perhaps if I were to debloat all google services, could this be of benefit?
Who knows, it may all be a waste of time, but it could be fun to try at least!
Perhaps we could start listing applications which would still allow us to get things done, let's say's say an alternative maps app, email etc.
Interesting reads....

I am pretty sure taking Google out of the equation is Cyanogens master plan. Partnering with companies like Amazon and Microsoft to facilitate applications and services Google provides.

Yeah but that's not for performance or data protection reasons. Its most likely so they can provide a self_contained product without the need for gapps
If you want to run Android without google applications, just pull and build from AOSP, and DON'T install any google application.
As far as what you will be missing.... play store (obviously). The only other "useful" google service that I can think of, is hangouts (voice/video calls over data network), and maybe some data sync like contacts. I can't stand google maps software, and typically disable it anyway. Copilot works much better (no data sucking on the road where cell service may not even be available), and if you need actual google maps..... they do have a website for it.

I totally agree with your reasoning here.
Because, no one is going to claim better performance on a device without Google's services when after substituting another set of services to perform the same missing functions, the user is left with the similar performance hit.
I.E. - "Damn Cynanogen OS, all those MS services are eating up my RAM and bogging down my phone" ....

Possibly worse performance. If you think about it, Google all ties in together and shares data between each other, where as if you had multiple vendors all syncing, that's got to be worse

I recommend open source alternatives wherever possible. But true, sometimes there are pretty good (or better) alternatives that are not. Feel free to ask specific questions. As for the maps apps: they usually don't collect location data (though they possibly could; but I know e.g. the dev of Locus Maps being quite privacy aware). Don't mix sheep with oxens: what collects those are not the maps apps, but e.g. the network location ("to improve service quality – and 'other things'"). And for that the series recommends OpenCellID – all going local on the device and you can check that (open source).
There are other things to gain: spreading your data across multiple providers versus having them concentrated in one hand makes "profiling" harder, for example. Or as a recent article on German's c't (computer+technic; unfortunately, the graphs are not online) showed: Much decreased network traffic, hence your data plan and your battery last longer
Disclosure: Yes, I'm "the guy" behind that article (and the one running that site). And yes, that Milestone still runs that way – and except for GCM there's not really anything I miss. Still.
