sudden rapid battery drain - Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Questions & Answers

Ive had my S20 FE for about 2 and a half months now and the battery has been sufficient for my usage, in the last 2 days however, it has just been dropping like mad. Facebook was the largest batty consumer at 18%, but that didnt seem out of the ordinary in comparison to the other times ive looked at my battery management. I just turned it off for about 30 min or so and charged it with it off until around 70%
Not sure if this was a one off weirdness type of thing or not, but symptoms like these dont usually bode well. Anyone else run into this yet?

nobody else has experienced this?

I'm having bad standby drain for some reason since the last 3 days on android 11. The battery curve was flat before that during standby.
I believe it's Google Play Services & its buggy updates

I assume overnight? have you tried turning off wifi/data/location/BT and see if you still get the same drain..?

Imho I would save your money, the S21 Ultra is only an incrmental increase in perf over the S20/S20FE for double the money.

thats my hangup on it too. just the sheer difference in price. Even with the trade in, its still another 600 bucks... AND i have a somewhat expensive project happening on my toy car this upcoming week.

Well I am loving my rooted, twrp'd, Xposed G781B. Currently trying to remove the carrier branding and getting 'force dark mode' in dev ops to stay on...

Major crossroad with Nexus 6

Hey guys, looking for some input here.
Im coming up on the 14 day return policy for the nexus 6, but im really thinking of returning it and going with the note 4.
The only issue i have with the phone is battery life. My phone seems to gulp it down. Now i do have many battery draining features turned off and standby time is excellent. Its when i actually use the phone i get massive drain, whether it be facebooking, web browsing, or playing games, the phone loses a lot of life! My wife used the camera this past weekend for 20 minutes according to the stats and my percentage dropped 25%from 80% to 55% within 1/2 hour!
My brightness is also on adaptive at 35-40%. For the life of me, it just seems i cant stop the battery drain.
I know going to the stock note 4 battery is about the same, but Zerolemon is releasing the note 4 10000 mah battery later this month. I had the same battery on my note 3 and loved it, ive never killed that battery. Yes, itll be a brick, yes but im thinking id prefer battery over function.
I do love the nexus, especially the screen size and the front facing speakers, and i will lose those with the note, but having a dead phone by 6pm makes those features useless. Yes, i could charge the phone halfway through the day, but i was spoiled with the note 3 extended battery.
SO my question is, should i chance the nexus 6 and hope upcoming updates solve the drain, or should i dump it and go with the note 4 and extended battery.
Frank
TL;DR NExus 6 battery dies too quick, return and get note 4 with zero lemon.
I went from the Note 4 to the Nexus 6 and battery life is about the same. I was actually pretty disappointed with the battery life of the Note 4 considering i had a Note 2 where the battery lasted FOREVER! I had originally decided that i would bypass the Nexus 6 and get the Note 4 instead, and at first i loved it but after having to deal with constant lag and dealing with samsung's crappy radios i'm glad i picked up the Nexus 6 (Note 4 is my new alarm clock at home)
It seems that your mind is already made up.. just get the Note 4

Are you using stock ROM or rooted and/or flashed? Sounds unusual for stock. I'd check your network settings and make sure your preferred network type and access point name are correct for your carrier but if standby time is good that probably isn't it anyway. I'd look for an app which gives more detailed battery usage information and go from there.
after going through an S4 and Note 3.. Im glad to be away from samsung. They have amazing hardware specs but drag it down with their crappy touchwiz. It's really unfortunate, the s-pen is pretty great.

im actually fully stock, with just a few apps. I have checked for wake locks and draining apps and down have any. Actually all the apps i had are the same as the note 3 i had. Nothing new.
Im on att and my prefered network is LTE, changed it from global a few days ago.
It seems the biggest drain is during use, not standby!

That is normal on any device. That battery for me is decent. However don't forget that you just got a new device. People always use new devices more initially before they settle into a normal use rhythm. Also I wouldn't worry much about the return date because this device is so hard to get that if you sold it yourself you would probably make money on it. Just give it time.

It's possible that something is wrong with YOUR nexus. I get 5 hours of sot with a stock rooted rom and greenify. Once I decrypt, ROM and kernel I'd expect 6 to 8 easy.

edit: nm i see you already mentioned it in the original post, and were just looking for opinions.
The battery life is obviously important, so it is certainly a dice roll on your part.
For me, I have a Note 2 and waiting for N6 to be available for me. I am so sick of Samsung forced apps and touchwiz. It's not rooted, but I don't feel like I should have to root it in order to get a basic OS without the addons being forced on me by the manufacturer, and then have the warranty voided because of it.

theres no such thing as "typical". we all use our devices differently, and have differing signal quality. you can really ever compare battery stats with another person because of that. only you know how you use your device. so the question is going to get changed.. by how you use your device, and your local signal quality, are you happy with your battery life?

Did you allow google to auto restore settings, apps, data at first boot up? Coming from a different device and OS version could have synced something funky that is causing this. I have noticed this before. Consequentially I never use this feature. I always set every device up fresh (same if switching Roms too in my book). I would try a factory reset at the very least. I have been trying hard to kill my n6 today with no luck, already 12 up time 22% battery left with 4½ hours SOT. Battery stats say I have 3 hours of life left.
Have google now on and going, 2 email clients syncing, g+ syncing, Tapatalk syncing, roughtly 4 active hangouts going, and updated 8+ apps from play store.
Been actively trying to duplicate a power day on this thing. With you experience, something is off with your description and worth experimenting some.
I did do the wireless sync due to some apps needing to recover data.
Maybe I'll try a reset and manually download the apps.

Ive had my phone for a couple weeks now. The first week I had it obviously I was playing around with it a ton and trying different Qi chargers to see how they work. My battery life was unimpressive at 8-10 hours. I was hoping to have at least a full days worth of time based on everything this is supposed to have.
Then I tried a couple things. I turned off the stupid fit application. I ran the battery all the way down until the phone literally turned off. Then I used only wall USB chargers to charge it up.
Now with the same type of usage 3-4 hours of screen time, Im typically getting at least 18-24 hours of battery life. I even managed 30 hours once. Anyway, Im extremely happy with the way this phone is holding up now. Obviously YMMV but I think if you find the right tweaks for the way you use it, it should last longer than you expect.

So Far Today by your stats i will give you mine.
@ 27% Battery Left after flashing Stock a 1.5 days ago rooted/decrypted
Screen is at 4:30:09 @ 42% Usage
Phone Radio 15:30:41 @ 4% usage
Wifi Active 3:24:12 1% usage
Held Awake 2:23:26 0% usage
App Usage 53%
I also have a persistent System (ADSPD) drain that while i don't know how much its draining app sucker puts it at 13.8% vs the next drainer of Android System at 7.3%
Just guessing maybe you are in a poorer signal area than I? Basing that on your phone radio using much more of the percentage?
For what its worth you saw my screen on time. GSAM is predicting 6h 58m total for the day if i run it to 0.

I really tried to like the Galaxy 6

I have to first tell you I had the SG S4, HTC M7, HTC M8, as my previous Android phones before I
switched to the iPhone 6 plus. As soon s I saw this Galaxy S6 I could't wait to get back to Android.
I really hate Apple and the way you have to use itunes to do anything on the phone.
Received my new SGS6 edge 128 gb sapphire black and it is fantastically built and the perfect size.
That's where all the joy ends. Lets all face the facts, the battery life on this phone stinks. Yes I am a
very experienced Android user and disabled ALL the bloat. Then you have to star disabling features
like VOLTE, wifi, push services etc.... Why the hell would you pay 1,000 for a phone that in order to
barely make a business day power wise you have to disable so many of the features? With that said
and a ton of stuff disabled the phone barely last 12 hours. That is not acceptable. The iPhone plus goes
2 full days (48 hours) with everything on before I have to charge. Before you start asking, yes I did multiple factory
resets, I did the clear cache etc. Like I said I am very experienced with Android phones.
I was so disappointed in the G6 with its sub par battery life. I still hate my iPhone and am looking
for the next Android release (Sony or LG) to see if they are any better. I like the Note 4 but I believe the
international version does not have LTE on ATT.
If anyone has any other Android suggestions please advise me so I can escape the Apple lock.

Have you looked at the HTC M9? I have the M9 currently and it's a pretty good phone. We already have a lot of devs making custom roms and kernels.
I am interested in the s6 which is why I'm looking at this forum, but the M9 is a really nice phone. I'm never satisfied, I have an addiction, a very expensive addiction.
Have you tried charging several times and bleeding the battery out after a couple of days? I noticed it wasn't really impressive batt life..then I disabled the at&t apps, cleared cache from recovery, disabled WiFi scanning, use power saving mode and I can get through the entire day, gym, and charge it at night with around 30% left..I'd give it a week or 2

Sameer,
Yes I did run down to 0 and then charged full, reset cache and there was only a marginal gain.
This is a business phone and I cannot be in the situation of worrying if my battery is going to
die while I am out with customers.
I will monitor this forum to see if any software update fixes the problem.
BTW I did get the Samsung push update and the Google services update.
So frustrating because I really wanted to make this phone work.

Lyall,
I loved the M7 and M8 and battery life was outstanding. The only thing that was
bad was the camera. So I have 2 questions:
1 - How is battery life
2 - How is the camera (I read not very good things about it)
I had the Developer edition on both the M7 and M8.

Battery life is acceptable. I listen to podcasts and do light browsing all day at work and my battery usually drops between 3 & 5% per hour. If I watch videos or play a game the battery drops a lot faster. I would say the battery life is about the same as the m8.
The camera has improved greatly with the new firmware updates from HTC, but it's still probably not as good as the s6. One thing for sure is, the camera on the m9 is definitely better than the m8.

I am confident the S6 is better then the iPhone 6. I love tech so I'm always comparing the top two competitors of this industry
The battery is an easy fix, update google play services to the latest 64bit version and then kill it dead a few times and use the quick charger to charge it to 100%. I am having zero issues making it thru the day and then some.

Designgears,
I did exactly what you are suggesting. The only thing that fixed was the cell standby usage.
Before that update the battery was unusable, so yes that helped.
If I watched any kind of streaming video, you tube, nexflix etc, the battery went down unbelievable.
I had a video conference for 20 minutes the battery dropped 25%. Any stress on the phone the battery
drops like crazy. I really believe it may be a lollypop issue but I cant justify over 1,000 dollars on a phone
that won't last the day. Especially if its not unlocked with software updates few and far between.
Should I try the International version? If anything the updates will be quicker. Do you think without
any bloat ( I did disable all the bloat) will the battery be better?

S9 Exynos here.
Second full day (after a half day when I got it) and it's been pretty horrible. I expected it to be average or not great for the first couple days, but this is nuts.
I've got everything on - location, sync, AOD, Bixby, etc - and am losing about 5% per hour with the screen off. Ending the day on 15% with only an hour or two of SOT.
Will be keeping a spreadsheet log of it, including what services are on and how I've used it, so will report back. Hope it improves naturally with everything on though. Reception is also surprisingly average; in the bathroom at work my Pixel 1 had decent enough reception to load videos, but my S9 seems to struggle to even load images. Pixel 1 had 3G in an underground pub, but my S9 couldn't get any data at all.

Sure i have also 5h SOT (with 2 h playing a game currently) but turning off things shouldn't be the solution to get SOT times still worse than the s8.
The bad thing is most reviews are aware of the bad battery Times but still gave a high rating. So samsung will not fix this as fast as we want as the first reviews are rewarding them.
This should be a high priority issue.
I am sure this idiots will first concentrate their fixes to have higher benchmarks results

Do you think it's fixable by Samsung? Maybe the new Exynos is just a battery sucker.
Battery life is underwhelming. Got like 1-2% discharge per hour, with phone locked + internet connection.

Are both the S8 and S9 Exynos?
I agree that it shouldn't be so much worse from the get-go...however, I personally care far more about how it behaves long term. If the S9 does eventually stabilize to behaving similar to the S8, that'd be fine with me. *If*...
(I'm currently on the fence between Exynos S8 and Exynos S9...)
Please read all S9 Exynos owners and watchers

i have poor battery life than other device. i should have not moved to s9 from a huawei midrange device. having premium phone but you still need to think on saving battery doesn't make sense. why pay for a premium phone if you will need to turn off features and sleep the apps just to save juice while outside. this is not fair.
Standby time on my phone has been amazing. Actually from 100% -90%, my battery drains like crazy, but after that it steadies out. I forgot to charge my phone last night with 72%, woke up with 70% and now still going strong. I think I can last another day with this phone. Yeah yeah I only have like one hour and 30min of SOT as of right now, but when I use my.phone through heavy usage I usually can get 5 hrs or even 5hrs and a half. Here's my small tip on how to save battery life:
1. Power saving mode on: CPU limiter off / decrease brightness 10% /AOD off / FHD
2. Battery saving on location settings
3. Make sure data is off when using wifi (developer setting)
4. Delete or disable bloatware
5. Use BetterBatteryStats to check and make sure you have no wakelocks (had some before and with a reboot it fixed all my problems)
6. Make sure your phone settles in. Give it at least a week
7. Go to the battery setting and click on certain apps and disable background activity so that it doesn't trigger any warlock (this will disable notification so beware)
8. For people who use Facebook, delete it. Go to chrome (or brave, which is better) and sign into to your Facebook account and add the website to your homescreen. Honestly it's a lot smoother and you will still receive notifications.
And yeah that's about it for my battery saving tips. Battery will vary depending on your usage so dont depend too much on this idea.
Here's mine

I am looking at rooting my Note 9 I've almost had for 2 years is it worth it?

I don't use any of the Samsung Apps but I do have the Frontier watch and was wondering if this will be affected? Also are my banking apps affected? I'm looking to get more out my battery life, explore more customization options and for games that I play! Has anyone else done it?
Well that question can only be answered by you
If you don't use Samsung apps then that's one worry out the way.
About banking apps I found this which has some info in that regard at the end of the reply: https://www.quora.com/Is-using-bank...fe-Is-there-any-chance-our-data-to-get-stolen
Mainly this piece:
"Also, the banking apps these days have become smarter — they realize when they are run on rooted phones and would stop working totally (if they run at all in the first place)."
The way I understand it is that even if a certain banking app runs fine there's no guarantee that they won't update it to fix it and to make it unusable on rooted devices.
My advice would be against rooting this phone unless you're just bored and want to mess with it for no reason and are prepared to lose OTA/security updates and trip KNOX forever.
I mean I can't find a single thing missing from this beast in order to even consider rooting it. Plus it will get the latest OneUI 2.1 in June so

Where you based ? Why i'm asking here in the UK we have 2 year warranty i would advise you to ring up Samsung get a new battery installed then root it! Well that's my plan they usally install battery for free!
Root it sooooo much fun
I'm on the Dr's rom no problems at all
I'm having the same question as well. Battery life on this phone has never been great, probably because of the rubbish exynos chip.

I get 8 hours screen on time with the exynos model though. That's on wifi, i get 7 hours on 4G. Can't complain about battery life at all here.

I lose around 2-3% overnight. I have a routine which turns off mobile data, wifi, sync, aod, gps, nfc and bluetooth between 1:30 and 7:30am. Maybe try this, dunno.

Thanks will try! My Note 10+ 5G 256GIG model is spot on with battery life, i wont even lose 1% over night even though its got no sim in it. Never am going to do that like purchase multiple phones with in few months of each other! i dont even play with my Note 10 + 5G or my Tab S6 LTE 256GB as the Note 9 does everything i need!

Question Panel Gap between Screen and Frame on a brand new S21 Ultra

Hi Guys,
I just purchased a brand new Galaxy S21 Ultra,
I am loving the phone, however I have noticed a gap between the screen and Body of the phone and I can slide a piece of paper through it.
(Pictures attached below)
I am deeply disappointed with this, is this normal?
I previously had the s7 and s9 and both had similar manufacturing flaws, it **bleep** to see that Samsung Quality control has still not changed over the years.
Is this a problem? Shall this affect the water resistance of the phone or is this normal?
Please help and give your feedbacks
I'm able to slide a paper in between the front and back glass and the frame too. I guess it's by design...? Never really noticed it in all these months till you pointed it out and frankly, even after seeing it now, it doesn't bother me. I guess some clearance is required between the brittle glass and the metal frame to prevent stress fractures of the glass when the frame deforms under stress, like @adamlee2012 said in his post.

Mine has gaps the same on the top on both corners. I think it's normal, it's to protect from impact, more likely to crack the glass if frame and glass are touching.

Thank you for your reply.
That is true however I'm concerned regarding the water resistance?
I tried submerging my phone in a bucket of water for 10mins, other than the microphone which eventually started working after it dried out. Everything else seemed fine
But if this Is normal why is that other device may or may not have it?

That is true but shouldn't it be uniform then, why is that some parts have a wider gap than the others and if so isn't that a manufacturing defect after all?
Do you suggest to keep or return this device?

I'm not sure if this will be accepted by Samsung as a valid reason for replacement. But if you're unhappy, by all means try to get a replacement or refund. It's your money, and you should be fully satisfied with what you bought with it, especially for this kind of asking price.
If the gap is giving you sleepless nights, better to get it replaced, or refund to get another phone. If I were you, I'd leave it alone. But it's your decision.

Well I purchased it off Amazon and I can return it for a refund, however the problem is due to the semi conductor chip shortage, there are no phones in stock, I had to wait for 2 months to get this device, now if I return it I don't know when the next one will come.
Also I am concerned that what if the replacement phone has wider gaps, I mean if this is normal and every device has it then it makes no sense to return it, am I right?
On a side note I found this statement from samsung

There is an app here in the s21U forum that checks the waterproofness of the device by asking you to press the screen hard so the app can check the internal pressure sensors.
It is made with the purpose of checking if the phones seals have worn out.
If yours is fine then you should probably just wear a case on the phone and move on

I did use the app, it uses the barometer to gauge if the water seal is broken or not.
However I do not know how accurate it is.
My phone passed the test though
I don't have this gap on my S21U Silver.
Everything is like molded and glued together

Well you already submerged the phone into water for 10 mins and all was fine so I see no reason to worry. The test must be accurate.
Honestly, given how tough it is to get a phone like that today, best case is to just put a cover on it and forget about the gap.
Unless you wanna try and go to the seller and ask for a new pone and see what they have to say. Soon new, or not...?

That is true.
I purchased it from Amazon and I gave only return it for a refund as they do not have any stock for a replacement, I waited for this phone itself for 1 month or so.
Also the phone is heating a lot and the battery life sucks. I have the Exynos variant. The ideal temperature is 35-38*C with some camera usage it goes up to 45 *C. Don't know if that's normal or what
My battery is showing learning usage pattern and it's on day 3.
So I'm really confused

If you can get a refund for it then that's not bad. Don't know where you live but it might be best to consider buying it locally if it exists in any shop near you.
I also got the exynos. The heating was present at 1st but eventually it stopped. After the usage was calibrated. And on the latest update with plenty of bloatware removed as per Ketan Rom.
Cemera heating up a bit is normal. If it really overheats and it starts being unresponsive that's a problem. Also if you are recording a video in hot weather that's a guaranteed HOT phone. It's happening for everyone and it is normal.

Hey thanks for the swift reply.
I live in India, the only feasible and best way to purchase it is via Amazon as they have a return period of 7 days if I purchase it from Samsung or any other local shop, there return period is max 24 hours which sucks.
I love the phone, love everything about it and especially now with the new iPhone out, I can still say that this crushes it, there is no other viable contender for it out there.
I can get it refunded and wait for the next bunch of stock, perhaps that might take another 10-15 days or a month due to the semi conductor shortage issue otherwise I can just keep this phone and use it however it pisses me off that inspire of paying 1200$ for it. There are such manufacturing flaw.
Also I forgot to ask and You didn't mention, does your phone have similar gaps where you can slide a piece of paper with ease?

It is an annoying situation indeed... Mine doesn't have the gaps, no. It is the silver exynos 256gb.
I'd say this is a rare issue and getting another phone would 99.9% be gapless... 24h is enough to test it throughly as well, so... Definitely consider it.
It also beats the new iPhone and that's a fact.
Lolz

Yeah that truly sucks.
My phone just finished the battery learning usage calibrating and I'm getting around 5.5hrs of SOT which is horrible compared to what others are getting and all the reviews out there.
I'm using adaptive 120hz refresh, wifi and 4g on, light surfing usage + Bluetooth on and always connected to the watch + WQHD enabled
Is this battery life normal? how much of SOT are you getting?
I was shocked to see that some people got 8-10 hrs of SOT while I only get the half

I'm getting around 6 hours of SOT with one and a half days of mixed usage. All features of the phone enabled. I'm happy with it.
There are users on XDA who've reported 8-10 hours of SOT but I've never been able to achieve that routinely. I have managed to reach 8hrs of SOT a couple of times, but I had to disable 4G, use only wifi, disable background sync, not use my Galaxy Watch, not open any app that used camera, stay in dark mode with low screen brightness, automatic brightness disabled etc etc to achieve that.
I didn't like the experience so decided to use the phone to it's fullest capability and forget about SOT as long as I got through to my bedtime.
I used to feel envious of these people initially, wondering why my phone didn't get insane SOT but after a few months of using this phone, I just don't care anymore, as I get to the end of my typical day with half the battery remaining.
Everyone has a different usage pattern, so battery life can vary wildly. If you're unhappy, you can try to disable some features, try debloating etc to try to improve it and see how it goes for you

100% what the above comment said.
I also can get about 6h sot with everything enabled including AOD. I spare nothing and 5-6h SOT is more than enough.
It easily lasts a day and that does it for me.
All the people showing how they got 8h+ SOT are basically using the phone at a very limited capacity. Lowering everything to show others how much SOT u got, is similar to cheating in a game. It's not realistic.
Your s21u is better than anything else u even had n the past. it is okay that the SOT is less than some other phones, they don't have what ur phone has.
So enjoy and don't overthink it.

I get 5.5hrs max of SOT with screen on QHD+ 120hz enabled, wifi connected and galaxy watch connected. I have been trying to limit background apps an so but can't survive for more than 5.5hrs.
Max my phone lasts is for 18-19hrs with 5.5hrs of SOT.
I have gone through several reviews of people claiming 8hrs+
I don't even have heavy usage, all I use is WhatsApp, YouTube and chrome and a bit of Facebook.
Considering how light the usage is surely the battery life sucks?
As enigmaamit above also said that he has mixed usage and still gets 6+ hrs and mine is light usage and it still struggles so I wonder is this normal?

There are too many variables into the equation...
FB uses plenty of battery for one.
Two, maybe where you are, your phone isn't catching great signal. usually when that happens, it drains the battery as the device is constantly trying to get better signal.
Maybe since you are not rooted you have plenty of bloatware that is draining your battery.
Additionally, putting usused apps to sleep, adaptive battery being ON, and also maybe you are using white mode instead of dark mode. Dark mode saves plenty of battery on our amoled screens.
Also I am rooted. So no bloatware. Battery fully calibrated. No draining apps. I use FB trough my KIWI browser with dark mode on for all pages.
If you get a full day, you are good.
