I wonder if Samsung have managed to fix this, seems a big problem with high refresh rate OLED phones, and even TVs. Would be a deal breaker for me as it makes my 8pro look horrible in low light. V tempted by the s21 Ultra but would have to know if it suffered from it .
I'm in the exact same position: Have a Oneplus 8 Pro right now and don't want to have to deal with black crush, green or red tint at lower brightness levels, posterization, etc. Only phone I know thus far that's pretty good in low light with an amoled screen is the iPhone 12 Pro Max so hopefully Samsung will have solved most of the issues with the S21 Ultra, and if not I'll return it and just get the iPhone 13 Pro Max when Apple releases it later this year.
I'll report back as soon as I get the phone (hopefully on the 29th).

The 8pro has been one of the worst phones I've owned, the green tint and black crush is horrible at low light, I have widevine L3 without ever unlocking the bootloader or modifying it an I get lag and crashes on A11. I'm pretty annoyed at shelling out another 1k so soon after buying it but I can't put up with it anymore, just don't want all the hassle of the green tint stuff again.

If you want a properly calibrated screen - Apple's iPhones are the only option; just need to make sure you pick a model with a screen made by Samsung => a lot of iPhone users are reporting issues with LG's panels (iphone 12 & 12 Pro).
I also primarily use my phone in bed at night to watch youtube, movies, tv series, etc. and the black crush is unbearable. My Tab S7+ is a bit better, but suffers from Green Tint at lower brightness levels. My friends iPhone 12 Pro Max is basically perfect.
I traded my S20 Plus in for the Samsung Note 20 and honestly, I have never had any of the display issues you mentioned on either phone. From what I have heard from others who have reviewed it already, we should not have any issues with the S21 Ultra either.
My S20U has never had this issue. I'm laying in bed at min brightness and 120hz as we speak.

The green tint is still there on the S21 Ultra? Any pics?
Just got my S21 Ultra.
Thoughts on the display:
Great uniformity
No black crush even at the lowest brightness level
Green tint is there at the lowest brightness levels
Can't see a difference between the 8 Pro and S21 Ultra at max brightness

Damn, so still green tint! Is there much difference between the 8pro and Ultra display? Is there an improvement on the Ultra because of the displays are much the same I may as well cancel my pre order.

The display is flatter and there's no black crush (can see shadow detail even at the lowest brightness setting). HDR also looks much brighter on the S21 Ultra. Other than that there's not a huge difference. My OnePlus 8 Pro also feels smoother in daily use (browsing the internet and scrolling -Exynos 2100 version). The camera seems better on the S21 Ultra.
I've got the S21 Ultra 5G Exynos. No green tint at all. If people have it they are isolated cases, and you should get your phone replaced.

Do you have another phone with an lcd-screen you could caompare it to? I think most people wouldn't notice the green tint without comparing two devices side-by-side (it's really subtle).

Yes, I had the s20 ultra yesterday. That also had no green tint. I've tested a number of apps, running on 120hz WQHD. I've run it on the lowest brightness and have also raised it. Tried, Instagram, Camera app, youtube, etc. No green tint at all.

The S20 Ultra also suffers from green tint so you're comparing two green tinted phones. Not everyone notices it. Only way to prove your phone doesn't suffer from it would be to take a photo next to a phone with an lcd-screen showing the same image on both in low light.

I've got an Iphone too. Definitely no green tint. And it's not as subtle as you think it is. These videos show it being pretty clear.
Is it possible you are imagining it?
Also it has been resolved with software fixes on the s20 ultra

Hi guys,
I am looking to get a phone and upgrade from P20, I am thinking of either OnePlus 7T and P30 Pro.
Any recommendations or opinions from users?
Personally:
I wanna go for OnePlus because of the OS, it is much cleaner and I enjoyed my three OP I had in a past.
I was thinking of P30 Pro due to camera.
Based in UK if that matters.

In my Opinion I would choose the P30Pro. The OP7TPro doesn't have IP-Certification and no wireless Charging.
Given the current status of the world order- Oppo

Absolutely agree. I would add that if you care about battery life, you should totally choose P30 Pro. As a con, the user interface is ugly and not fluent. Buuut, the Android 10 update is on its way, it should land on it very soon.

Definitely 7T, it has worse battery life (still amazing if you charge device every night), camera (depends, p30 has better camera hardware but postprocessing is ****-oversharpening, oversaturated etc... On the other hand 7t's camera is still awesome, not as much detail, zoom or night capabilities but still amazing, honestly majority of flagship phones these days take amazing looking photos with very little difference) and it has no IP rating which doesn't mean anything because it's still waterproof just not certified, even phones with IP rating get water damaged and warranty won't cover it so I don't think it's deal-breaker. Also, OnePlus UI (Oxygen OS) is miles better than buggy EMUI, and support for it is also awesome unlike on Huawei devices.I have got P20 pro(last year flagship) and they almost totally abandoned it, no update for like 3 months. So I would definitely take OnePlus 7T. You can also unlock bootloader on it and have support from XDA developers for another +-4 years.Maybe much more
EDIT: Almost forgot about 90Hz display, that's another awesome feature of 7T
Camera, battery, ip rating(op failed on real ip68 test), features, ir blaster, wireless charging VS 90hz display, sd855+, oxygen os(close to stock, if less is better), longer future support and updates.
Unfortunately p30 pro tends to yellow the photos at night and with certain artificial lights, I myself took p30 pro and I'm thinking of making the return to take op7t
Funny that I was on same boat, and yesterday went for the P30 Pro to replace my Note 8.
I was really about to go for the 7T Pro, since everything is better on that phone out of the camera. CPU is better, screen is much better (90Hz), sound is real stereo and just great, Oxygen OS is far better, everything including video...
Unfortunately, camera sensor is crap. Photos are ok but not an improvement to my Note. I already turned back a S10 for that same reason, and my main use for a phone is photo! And after a full day and about a thousand pics already, I am convinced that I have made the right choice.
The P30 photos are not better than the Note at x1, but everything above is much better. It has weaknesses, sometimes colors are getting washed out, you can see it on the screen, looks perfect and all of a sudden loose their 'pop'... Huawei interface is real crap, but I can leave with it.
So it all depends by how photos are important to you. If just decent photos are ok, and you are mainly a video guy, go for the OnePlus, this is a great phone, but if your main usage is photo, P30 Pro is the only choice!
Yeah I was super set on the P30 pro but then discovered that the bootloader is locked beyond hope so I dunno. I really want the great battery life of the p30 pro and camera though
Now that I'm using dark mode on app such as Instagram and Google foto I earned 1h sot. Look at here!
I Forgot this
Am in the same boat (based in UK too). OP7T Pro McLaren version out next week which looks great in the promotional video but think I'm still tending towards P30 Pro... here's my logic:
P30 Pro pros:
better camera with all 3 back cameras supporting RAW
3D TOF sensor
IP68 Certified - good enough to shoot in a pool
P30 Pro cons:
Locked bootloader so no root possible (am mainly looking to block ads though and there are options via DNS)
OP7T pros:
Root possible
McLaren version looks cool
Higher spec in general
90Hz screen
no front camera notch
OP7t cons:
bit heavy
no IP rating although it sounds water resistant
Stock camera OK (only main lens will save RAW)
GCAM mod won't support all 3 lenses
I'm on the same boat as well. Both have it's pros and cons. I say get the one which has the best support in your area. In the last 7 years, I never had a phone that did not return for warranty - and I had plenty (Sony Xperia, Pixel, Pixel 2, P20 Pro, IphoneX, Samsung 9)
I'm now waiting for a decision on Nov 19th which could see ban lifted between US and some Huawei products. Maybe that could put Mate 30 Pro on the table if it receives Google Play Services.
Take oneplus you will not regret the choice, take p30 pro youll'find a lot of bad things -Yellowish tint in photos
-Update never get costant {updated from 8 August received on 11 november (September patched) with no other improvement/bugfix} even oneplus 3t (3yo phone is Better supported),
-Updates breaks camera: dgital zoom gives now black photos in lowlight... Before update the camera saw more than human eye, now It barely focus.
-Pulldown gesture on home to get notification and Quick tiles.
-2019 smartphone miss double tap to sleep on lockscreen.
-Lack of something to turn on Torch when screen off... (Partly solvable with external applications like Button remapper).
-In "monocromatic mode" even of you use supersensing camera (the principal one) yuo can't go further 6400 iso, so in dark conditions if you want to see something you need to switch in Pro mode and raise the exposure time increasing the blur.
-If you like to shot 16:9 Remember that you suo at 6MP
-Sometimes I don't receive SMS, and they all arrive together after restarting the phone
As an old owner of Oneplus One (still using It) and Oneplus 3t (for sale) I regret not having chosen oneplus again
Just to say one, I did some tests in night mode with the gcam on oneplus 3t and with the p30 pro ... In some situations the 3t won. More accurate color, more capabilities to zoom the photo after shot.
I hope, really really hope, that emui 10 Will solve most of thesw things... For now I'm very disappointed
Hi,
Coming from HTC10 then Sony XZ1 and XZ2 then finally this P30 Pro offered by my company and...
All I have to say is that this phone is the best I have ever owned and this in all conditions.
Battery life is tremendous 10h sot even while gaming.
Just went to NYC for personal trip and took more than 1000 pics and only 5 to 10 were missed due to my shaking hand because of the cold.
I also went to Madison Square Garden to a concert and video and sound recorded are absolutely fantastic.
The only thing I could regret is my phone is a branded phone (sfr) so they are late to push updates.
Apart from that everything is terrific
Make your choice and go to a sell shop to compare them by your own as every people is having a different usage and expectations.
But my personal opinion Huawei beats the OP7T... As I said it is only my personal opinion.

I went to Prague, take almost 1060 (photo+video) after cleaning the album only 580 start. And in some conditions i takes random shoto with oneplus 3t gcam (better result than p30 pro)

I just got my Realme x2 pro yesterday and the first thing i did was to test the screen on a dark gray background+low brightness(10-20 percent). And the result is this...
Is this a common issue? Only color where i can see purple /pink like spots is the dark gray but only combined with low brightness and in complete dark room. If i go up to about 30 % or more everything looks fine. What should i do? Is this defective screen? Or just amoled issue. Thanks in advance.
Some spots are common with low brightness in Amoled screens, in my mi 9t pro happens a little bit, also at low brightness, but the spots aren't purple, mine are completely black.
I think you should return the phone and get another one if you can, Thats what I would do
It is both I mean it is a faulty screen and common Amoled issue
Manufacturers like Samsung and others put screens like this on the market and don't care because ppl are I don't know use to this?
Something more about these flaws
https://www.ee.co.za/article/how-to-use-imaging-colorimeters-to-improve-oled-display-quality.html
You can type in google something like a model of the phone plus "screen uniformity" and you will see the true beauty of OLEDs
I have also that issue, and also on the replacement model, in a different way and worse.
This is the amoled lottery, dark grays in low brightness is the worse color for amoled to get it uniformly.
If you are lucky you can get a better one near perfection or get a even worse.
I have seen this in a lot of amoled phones, s7 Edge (4 units), mate 10 (2 units), mate 20 (1), mi9 (3 units), mi9t (3). The perfect ones that I saw lately p30 pro (2), s9 (1), s10 plus (1).
I got used with the thing . I once wrote Realme about this and the have not answered my email .
Anyway it only occurs on dark grey combined wirh low brigtness , around 15-20 percent . If brightness reaches around 40 percent , it dissapears. And this only occurs on places with almost complete darkness. So i can clearly live with this.
You probably can't get a oled from Samsung at the minute without this... I've had 2x S10 plus one from eBay Snapdragon version and one from Argos UK version with this and my brother has had 2x note 10 plus both Snapdragon from ebay and his wife has a standard S10 from EE and they all have it to some degree... I sent both the S10 plus back and my brother sent his first note 10 back. I decided I'm not paying through roof for a S10 plus with screen issues and got the Realme X2 pro.... My X2 pro has this but not as bad as any of the S10 plus and also colour shift is nowhere near as bad and whites are much whiter.
Here is perfect. So it is a lottery
i had two and both with uniformity issue..more or less the same of oneplus7t..and a lot of other oled displays I had recently..the only one that was perfect was the mate 20 pro (with boe screen, not lg)
mine is perfectly fine , i think its luck about the panel
hi guys I'm thinking of upgrading from my note 10 plus just a question is the display 10bit like some are saying as ive been on the sony website and its saying the same as it did for the xperia 1from last year 10bit 8bit with 2bit software or something
Just asking as the oneplus 8pro is supposedly 10bit in total

I don't know, but 4k HDR looks absolutely amazing!
It will be 10bit as it supports bt2020 and over billion colours.

It is 8+2 bit just like oneplus.
It's really an 8bit display,
I also switched from Note 10 plus to this phone and love it so far! Screen is so crisp and colors are dead accurate in pro mode
Sony adverts it as a 10bit Display (8+2). And yes, the screen is the best part of this device.
Same as last year. It's 8bit with smoothing. It's not like 10bit. It's more like an in between.
So does the phone actually support 1 billion colors or is it like a 16m display?
Really tempted to trade in my note 10 plus for it bit I've also heard that the cameras arnt all that good either ?
Also another question does the display get bright when viewing hdr as ive heard that sony turned down the brightness of the display from the xperia 1 which I thought it wasn't bright enough then
Thanks

Keep the note 10+.
The Xperia is still lacking in alot of areas, battery, display brightness, fixed front camera, little things like that don't add up to $1200.
When it drops to around $800-US then it'll be closer to it's worth.
It's just not worth it, no matter how beautiful it is when the experience is worse.

I come from Note 10 plus and not looking back. Vanilla Android UI is much nicer than One UI. i also missed flat screen. Camera is for sure better on 1 ii if you think when you take photos. Have had no problem with the display outdoor at all. It doesn't match super bright note when sunlight hits it but def as bright as OnePlus 8 and way brighter than Pixel. So whoever says its "dim" doesn't have enough data points to compare. Speakers are more clear and sound louder to me since front firing. Overall, so happy that I have a flagship with flat screen. Had Pixel in the past but they always had hardware issues and crappy display.
Thanks just another question the 10 bit display does it work all the time in both standard and creator mode or is it just in creator mode?
Thanks
Hi guys does the creator mode need to be selected for the 10 bit color or is it walkways active?
Only asking as I normally have it on standered but will change it if so

So I just came to the S21 ultra from a OnePlus 8 pro. 8 Pro has the ability to turn on wide color gamut in display settings. 'Vivid' mode on the S21 supposedly does this. But when I turn on vivid, and then look at the two device screens side by side, the color is richer, and fuller, and just looks all around better on the OnePlus 8 pro.
Does anyone know of any secret or hidden color settings on the S21 ultra? I'm shocked that such an expensive device using the newest screen tech/LTPO just simply doesn't look as good.
Additionally, what shocks me, is that the 8 pro also has better touch response. Literally does feel like ala bonafide 240 touch sample rate. Even with touch sensitivity turned on on the S21 ultra, it just doesn't feel as good. I will concede, the screen is smoother on the S21 ultra, however.
Strange because it's the exact opposite for me coming from the 8pro. To me the display on the 8pro was horrible compared to the s21u. An example of this would be the green tint at low light levels and uneven display of the 8pro. No problems with the touch response either.....

That's because you have one of the early manufactured builds. I have a warranty exchange that was built in September, (because the original had the same problem you had) and it has a perfect screen. Much richer color than my s21 ultra.
Also the s21 ultra has this weird brownish yellow piss tint I noticed as well. I had to really turn down the white balance in advanced display settings. I realize it's supposed to be closer to 'cinema color', but it still looks like crap. I'm realizing how underrated the one plus 8 pro is now..

Are you talking about touch sampling rate during gaming as I've noticed it's not so good on the S21U, I came from a p30 pro and call of duty run perfectly but with my s21U moving the character has a slight delay. Supposed to be 240hz touch sampling but don't see or feel it.

There are hidden color settings, but none will offer more color volume than vivid mode.
###
adb shell settings put system screen_mode_setting a number from 0 to 4
- 0 AMOLED Cinema (DCI P3 target)
- 1 AMOLED Photo (Adobe RGB target)
- 2 Basic (sRGB target)
- 3 Natural
- 4 Vivid
In order for this to work, you need to switch in and out of the screen mode menu after you've sent the command for the screen to update.
###
The touch sample rate is 120 Hz for the S21U when scrolling through most tasks and 240 Hz in games only.

Noticed that too when comparing my 7 pro. Wish this had wider color gamut. All the other small issues I got makes we wish I waited for the 9 pro.
I'm using a little "hack" to achieve richer colors since the Android 10 update on my S10+ and now on my S21U this still works. But with this option you can't change the screen color settings anymore. Just enable the built in blue light filter mode with an intensity that suits you and keep it always enabled.
After my S10+ was updated to Android 10 I was shocked how pale my photos suddenly looked even with vivid mode enabled. I was surprised when I opened the gallery in the evening and my photos had rich colors again. I was using scheduled blue light mode and thats how I noticed this behaviour.
If you want to compare the changes just open a picture in your gallery and look at the colors before and after. I don't know if this will work on all regions, I'm using an Exynos Version S21U.

Wait, this doesn't make sense bro. I put on blue filter under 'add color filter'. All it does is make it extremely blue, which looks like sh1t.
I did find something that actually works. It's an app called 'color changer' in the play store. I bought the pro version which allows profile to stick on reboot. It works great. Despite using it, the color still doesn't look as rich and full as my Oneplus 8 Pro, however.

Not the blue filter but blue light filter. They changed it to Eye-Comfort, don't know exactly cause my phone is not set to english, option or something like that in latest OneUi. The one you can schedule to reduce blue colors before going to sleep. But nice you found another solution.
From what I gather the main sensor found in the Edge 20 and Edge 20 Pro is an ISOCELL HM2, a 1/1.52", 108MP non-stabilized sensor, that is actually a total downgrade from the previous Edge+ sensor that had OIS and was a 1/1.33". From what I gather, this sensor is total garbage for low-light because of it's uneven and overwhelming noise. The first photo is from DXOMARK, who reviewed the Edge 20 Pro, here is a link to their low-light video test (
) where if you look to the right edge you can see a bias towards a purple tinge, consistent with the one from the photo, also present in another sample from Mobilissimo (
). Going into pro mode and using the settings onscreen, in an almost completely dark room, the noise is visible. Both the Redmi Note 10 Pro and 11 Pro have the same sensor, and they seem to suffer from the same issue (
). The RAW file proves that the issue comes from the source, not the post-processing. You could try it out, I guarantee you have the same issue. I urge Motorola to rule out a firmware fix for this. This and to fix the uneven grain at the bottom of the display when it's set to anything above 60Hz. This seriously plagues the phones. It has gone on for long enough.
I do agree. But you wrote that Redmi Note 10 Pro and 11 Pro seem to suffer from the same issue, so it might not be a firmware for Moto to fix but rather for Moto not to have chosen a very good sensor.
I recognize the dirty wobbling on the video though. :-/

Yeah the sensor is garbage. They do seem to have fixed the colored noise through software on photos with the Moto camera app, however video still suffers the same issue. I personally use a combination of filters and color adjustments in the Photos app just to make night-time video passable.
