When I insert my USB cable into the PC, there is no response, no notification sound saying that a device was connected. The phone simply charges and does not seem to enter file-sharing mode. There is no activity on PC or phone when it gets connected. Not even a USB sign, just "cable charging". Any ideas?
I am certain it's not the cable because when I connect my old S8+, it all works fine but my PC just doesn't react to S21. I've also checked the developer options and it's set to "transferring files" mode there.
I installed USB drivers but it didn't help. The only way my phone gets detected is if I enter download mode but that''s not very useful to me
Sounds like a driver issue.
Check Event Viewer for error messages.
Try looking under drives and opening directly from there.
Try turning off Developer options.
There are no errors in the event viewer, the computer simply does not react when I connect my phone. All it does is charging. Turned off dev mode too, no dice.
same thing here..
factory reset my phone
reinstall adb driver on pc
still missing usb options upon plugging in the cable
I'm thinking of returning the phone at this point... I've even flashed through Odin just now and it worked perfectly but it won't connect to PC.

I had the same problem, until I used the cable that came with the pods pro.
Its very weird because I have other high quality usb cables but they didnt work with my S21U exynos edition.
Only the samsung one worked.

I don't have pods pro though... The only cable I have is some generic USB cable that works perfectly for my S8+ and a USB-C to USB-C cable that came in the box with the phone. None of them work. I don't know what to do
Nevermind... I have just cleaned USB-C port on my PC and it worked! Still weird how it won't accept my high quality USB cable though
My S21U connects fine to my work PC but doesn't connect to my home laptop, both run Windows 10. The laptop doesn't react at all to the phone being connected, the work PC behaves as normal. The only difference is my work PC is on W10 Pro, the laptop is on Home, both are up to date. I've been blaming Windows so far but I have no idea if it's that or the phone.

Are you using the same cable on both your home and work PC? If yes, try different USB slots and make sure to clean them too, that's what helped me.

Same cable but I will check the ports on the laptop later, it is a good possibility that they are full of fluff.

Yes exactly and i tried the cable with 2 different phones and they work perfectly. When connected to S21U it only charges....
You need to use a full pin usb c cable. A usb 2.0 type c cable will not work
Connected fine to windows 10 pc here used my Xbox elite cable no problem. Hopefully you find a solution.

And cable is not USB 2.0. Cable from P40- Pro. I tried different cables, different PC, no effect. Model SM-G998B/DS. I contacted support 3 times, no effect. The "data exchange" option does not appear on the phone".
in the file explorer are you able to see more than just media files from your phone? are you able to see documents files, ex.. docx, pdfs? how about zip files and .exe files? are you able to bring any files from your pc to your phone? i'm not able to do those. any feedback would be appreciated. thanks!

Thanks for the reply, I decided to just do the factory reset on my phone and that helped the issue. As well as Windows 10 updating the Samsung USB drivers to the latest 2.17 version.

I have an issue with my PC not recognizing my Captivate. When I plug in the USB cable to my PC, I can choose to activate USB mode and it prompts me to mount the drive, I say yes but nothing shows up in My Computer. I was able to do all this fine just a few days ago.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers. I installed Samsung Kies and it doesn't recognize the phone. I tried my phone on another PC and it won't show up there either. I've factory wiped the phone twice now.
Is it a problem with the phone or is there something I can do to get this to work?
I'm having the same issue. Did you get this resolved & if so, how? Tried both ports on my MB Pro & work PC...tried Samsung cable & another USB cable. Debugging is on.
Try Settings -> Applications -> USB Settings -> (select) Mass Storage
I found that when my captivate was set to Kies my computer wouldn't pick it up.
Mine was set to ask on connection. Tried mass storage mode (debugging off) & no dice. Back to ask on connection with debugging on, and still nothing. I've tried all 3 USB ports on my work laptop and both on the MB Pro. Any other ideas?
Did u try enabling "debug mode" and seeing if the PC recognizes it.
The main issue is usually your USB cable. I had the same issue. You need to find an OEM mini usb cable for it to work properly. The one that came with my phone works fine, but when i went to ATT and bought one for my work, it only lets you charge the phone and does not put your phone into USB connection mode.

The ones from MonoPrice work for me and they were like $1.50
Diablo: Been in debugging mode most of the time trying to get it to work. Main issue is getting my personal MB Pro to recognize, so I won't be able to check/tinker much until after work tonight.
cajuntigerbait: I've been using the provided Samsung cable – tried a work Blackberry cable (works fine with my work BB) to no avail as well.
Will update tonight. Any tried & true methods for cleaning the phone port while I'm at it? Thanks for the quick responses, everyone

Thanks, will check the site & order a few when I get a chance. Couldn't hurt to have a couple spares, right?
When I plug my N3 into a USB 3.0 port on my Windows 7 PC (using the cable that came with the phone), it works fine until I select the phone option to use USB 3.0 mode. At that point, my PC stops recognizing the phone (it disappears from Windows Explorer). Has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone know of a solution?
I had this happen to me earlier- I had to plug it into a different USB port while it was still in USB 3.0 mode. For some reason, sometimes when I switch it, it fails to enumerate the device ID. If you quickly plug it into a different USB 3.0 port, it will work. At least for me. YMMV!

Thanks, but that doesn't work for me.
Here's what happens, in more detail. I plug the phone into a front-panel USB 3.0 port. My PC's Windows Explorer then shows the phone as a Portable Media Player, and the phone says "Connected as a media device. Tap for UDB 3.0 and other options". I tap and then set the checkbox for "Media device (USB 3.0), selecting "Use USB 3.0". At that point, the phone immediately vanishes from Windows Explorer, and the USB "Connected as Media Device" notification also vanishes.
In contrast, when I plug the phone into a rear-panel USB 3.0 port, it never connects at all. It does vibrate briefly to show it knows it was plugged in. But neither the PC nor the phone itself gives any other indication of the connection.
Update: I found a different (Intel) rear USB 3.0 port that works. Apparently it's just finicky about what port to connect to. (All drivers on my PC are up-to-date, though.) I haven't tried any file transfers yet, but the phone notification says "Connected as USB 3.0 Media Device", and the PC Windows Explorer shows the phone and can list its files.

This is what happened to me when I plugged in to my front 3.0 port the phone would have the charging icon at the top but would not show connected to USB 3.0 port not pull down menu just showed charging if I put into 2.0 ports USB notification pops right up. So I thought my phone was bad and exchanged it and the same thing happened. So I then turned to the PC I went to my laptop which is a Dell with Intel chipset and i7 plug it in and it was recognized right away pull down menu and 3.0 option showed. So off to the store I went while I was there talked to one of the techs and he told me that ASMedia 3.0 controller on the boards where having problems Intel and AMD now I was on track as I have a AMD Sabertooth 990fx board so I did two thing I picked up a M5A99fx Pro 2.0 and a I/O PCI Express 3.0 card one I got had a different controller than AsMedia on it and got lucky and found one that also had a 20 pin port on the card so I could plug my front port cord to the card and it would give me access to the front ports on my tower. I installed the new mother board and the same thing happened then I put the PCI Express card in and hooked my 20 pin cord up and now I have usb 3.0 on the front but the board's ports still won't work with the phone also I tested other flash drives and USB 3.0 drives and it seems that what the tech said is true with my setup AsMedia is have problems with their controller! The PCI Express card is the Vantec one UGT-PC345 and it has then Renesas USB 3.0 Controller on it. I have since went back to my Sabertooth board and returned the M5A99fx my board is just fine just had to ad the card to get 3.0.
Well in my case the third option just doesn't exist its not grayed out its just not they're so I wonder if its a att deal can some one let me know
I dont know if its related but the issue i have is that when i tap the usb 3.0 option, my phone connects and disconnects over and over about 5 times at whic point it goes back to MTP.
Also, i forgot to add... when it stops all the connecting and disconnecting, i get the message that no software was found. I installed Kies, but its the same thing. This is windows 8.

Only what I mentioned in the update above--it worked to use a different USB 3.0 port on the same PC. The port that didn't work has a different controller, so there may be a driver problem. But I stopped investigating as soon as I found a port that worked.

How about a little more info on what your system is. Especially motherboard manufacturer. It seems what ive found in my searching is that most people who are having this issue share one major thing in common and thats the the board manufacturer is ASUS. Im not saying all of them, but most. With that being said im also willing to bet that most problems are on the same USB chip manufacturer. Asmedia chips seem to have the issue. I have 3 towers all with different ASUS boards but all have Asmedia controllers and they all have the same problem. However, if i plug it into my wifes laptop with an intel USB 3 controller, it works perfect.
I have done firmware upgrades, changed BIOS settings, even a reinstall on all 3 systems of the whole OS and in the end i got the same result. The only thing ive been able to get work is if i install ASUS' USB Boost software, my phone will now show its working on 3.0 but only from the rear ports. That being said, if i let it sit at idle for more than about 15-20 minutes, it automatically goes back to USB 2. I dont know if thats intended or if im still having issues.
So, any extra info you can supply might help get a better response. OS, MB manufacturer, controller manufacturer, all of those things will help.
I'm almost 100% certain that BC 1.1 is enabled on your computer. It's extremely common with ASUS boards. It is on other boards as well. Find out how you can disable it from the manufacturer and it will work.

Possibly. But I don't have BC 1.1 enabled on mine, and I have the same problem on my non-Intel USB 3.0 ports (but the Intel ones work).

Thank you. This is the issue I had. I have an Asus motherboard, and I did have Ai Charger+ enabled, that supposedly charges BC 1.1 devices 3x faster.
So for anyone who has AI Suite installed, open it up from the system tray, go to Tool, then Ai Charger+, and make sure it's disabled.
I just re-tried the USB 3.0 port on my PC that previously didn't connect to my N3 in USB 3.0 mode, and it now does. I don't know when or how it got fixed. The hardware is still the same and I haven't manually changed anything on my PC or N3 that would be relevant, so either the PC or the N3 must have received some intervening update that repaired the problem.

An incompatible update for the Texas Instruments XHCI controller was delivered through Microsoft Windows Update. If your computer received this update, use the following steps to roll the controller driver back to the previous version:
Click Start , enter device manager into the search field, and click Device Manager from the results.
In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list.
Right-click Texas Instruments XHCI Controller and select Properties . If Texas Instruments XHCI Controller is not listed, then this step will not fix the problem. Find and use another section on this page.

Thanks, but as just mentioned, my problem already fixed itself. Also, my PC doesn't have the TI XHCI controller. Also, the warning you quote is from more than a year ago, so it is very unlikely to still be applicable.
Hi,
I connected my note 5 to my laptop today, and surprise surprise, it is no longer recognized by the PC (though it charges). It used to be fine, I don't know what changed!
I tried different cables, different USB ports and different laptops
I tried to plug it in normal mode, safe mode, recovery mode and download mode
I tried switching USB debugging on/off
I tried the *#0808# menu, and I tried MTP+ADB and CP options
I uninstalled drivers from the PC and installed the latest from the samsung website
I tried both kies and smart switch
nothing worked! I am not doing a factory reset because I have seen many people do it for other devices and none of them solved it this way! I'm waiting for the Marshmallow update, maybe it will fix this annoying issue. Meanwhile do you have any other ideas guys?

hi,
you don't say what Laptop o/s you using on laptop.?
Windows 10, Windows 8.1 Windows 8 or Windows 7...... or Apple o/s.?
Briefly my take is on this is, most probably the laptop and not phone.?

My reason is, i have Windows 10 laptop

Yes, , it charges phone (just like yours) but does not recognize phone.!
I then have to re install drivers for phone I use Smart Switch to re install drivers.
Then it works ok for a while etc..
Why don't you test phone on someone else's pc or laptop to make sure.?
Overall my Note5 is mostly recognized by laptop
Good luck

hi ,
why i still think its laptop /pc drivers related.
(But yes ,i might be completely wrong ..?)
i have laptop win 10 x64 also.
The issue is of laptop, not always recognizing a device /similar as yours ,but charging device .
Other devices, when trying to connect to laptop (,not just my Note5 ),( from time to time) eg Note 2,..3 ..4 , USB flashstick ..my Polar M400 running watch etc .Device is not recognized but charging .
So for me,
its just not Note 5 but other devices also (.from time to time) .
My "take " on this issue is that it points between drivers (pc ,laptop) //// relevant devices eg Note 5 ..etc . and not just the firmware issue of Note 5 ,??
but yes, as stated i might be wrong .
good luck
Post note ,
i have to add reinstalling drivers "sometimes " help " ,
but it happens again, later. ( not recognizing device )
So i am pointing fingers, at Windows o/s + the "company/maker " of laptop ..pc and + devices .The compatibility between all three above ,combined and yes i had similar issues ( from time to time with Win 8 ../Win 8.1 etc ).
Yet, i have also found that certain of my devices
that work nearly 100% of time on my laptop !,
which indicates to me, the compatibility of devices between device /laptop ,is very good ..??
I have a note 2 and it works every time when I plug it to either pc. My laptop is lenovo with all the latest drivers. Hopefully, marshmallow will address this issue because otherwise, this means that I can't root my device.

hi ,
strange ,
just for the record i also have a Lenovo Flex 2 laptop ( x64 ) Win 10 .!!!
i have rooted all my devices on Lenovo laptop ( Note 2, Note 3 , Note 4 and my Note 8.0 tablet etc )
Yet , i am at moment not interested in rooting my Note5 ( i have it already a couple of months )
I am happy keeping myself busy with Theme store ,tweaks/beta apps and lately with the interesting Lockmaster app( Play store ) for lockscreen ... etc .
If i get the root "urge " i pick up my other rooted devices and use them .or /update or/ install root only tweaks/apps etc. for my rooted devices .!!
i hope Marshmallow fixes your issues .!!

Edit: Never mind that. I see what you mean. That's odd it's not there for you. It definitely sounds like a PC issue. You can try completely removing all Samsung drivers and start over. Just using the Uninstaller will not cut it though. You'll have to do a system level cleaning of all samsung drivers.

The issue is not with your device. It's because of Windows. Is there another computer that you can use to connect your device to that you have never connected to before? Also make sure that you are using either the cable that came with your device, or at least a good quality cable. I've had that issue occur in the past because I was using a cheap cable.

I did plug it in my brother's laptop but no dice. I tried the OEM cable and an Asus cable on USB 2 and 3 ports, it did not work on either pc. How can I completely uninstall samsung drivers?
For users having the same issue, I found a solution (which also fixes all charging issues by the way).
If you look at the charging port, you will see a "tongue" where the pins connect. We all know that fast charging requires 5 pins not 4. The OEM cable comes with 5 as you all know. However, I found the OEM cable to be very fragile and not reliable, one pin tends to get bent without much pressure. This leads to the "tongue" going down somehow. The fix is to get the "tongue" up a bit, use a toothpick or something that does not conduct power. As for the cable, I suggest you use an Asus cable (I have 3 of those, 2 from my nexus 7s and 1 from my Zenwatch). Asus cables come with 5 pins and they are sturdier than Samsung's and they are a bit longer as well. Now the phone charges properly, fast charging and all and the computer recognizes it once again.
Hope this helps you too

I'm having this same problem these same problems. Other then I'm not able to get it to recognize even after doing everything that was said to do in this thread.
I feel like I'm missing a file? I was messing with them and just may think that could be my problem. is there anything else that has not been said in this thread I could do to fix this problem? When connected to my computer it recognize it as a charger. I can't access my files from my computer to my phone.
any help would be very helpful! Thanks!
I'm having the exact same problem but now I tried to use Flashify to go back to original recovery instead of TWRP & now by recovery or boot IMG is screwed so it wont even boot to recovery..
It boots only to download mode & is not recognized by any PC we have, with every cable I've tried.. uhhgggggg
I was having the same issue. Here is what solved it for me:
• Disconnect the usb cable.
• Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\Hardware and Sound
o Go down to device / hardware and devices – click on that
o Follow instructions to correct issues. This found I needed a bus device driver update.
o Let it update and once done go out.
• On PC - Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings - go down until you get to the part that says "All Networks" ...expand the list by clicking on the arrow to the right. In this area you will see "Media Streaming" There should be an area highlighted in blue that says "Choose media streaming options" click on that. Make sure you "allow all" . Once that is done, click "ok" at the bottom. Plug your device into the usb and it should be recognized. Seems a recent Windows update has that filter off.
• Now, restart your computer.
• Use original usb cord that came with phone! Plug in phone then plug in usb to computer.
• It should recognize your device now.
I now have to restart computer every time I want to connect my device but it works.
Hi I am having that same problem with my note 4. It doesn't seem to be a pc problem as no pc at all none Nada recognizes the phone. Windows 7 to Windows 10. None. Used 2 workmates of mine who also have note 4s on my laptop and all the laptops i used i used their phine on itand they worked so blaming the pc seems to be out of the equation..your solution and all those settings have been untouched as it has all devices allowed ..... tried cleaning the connectors and also different oem cables to no avail ..The only thing I have not done is change the logic board
Hi I hope somebody can help me. I am having exactly the same issue. though I don't think its PC or Laptop problem. I have two Note 5 the other one is working just fine, while the other Note 5 that was just charging was connected I noticed that running *#0808# I can select AP and CP but MTP+ADP was not selected and if I try selecting the radio button I will be able to but after pressing Ok or Reboot it back to no selection at all. Which I observe on my other Note 5 that was working its always selected every time I run *#0808#.
One more thing noticed is that on the Note 5 that was not working I boot it download (ODIN) mode and connect back to USB of my PC and Laptop, I hear a sound (the typical sound in windows once you connect any USB device) though I cannot access it I am positive that my USB port on both device are in good condition and since it was detected in windows through ODIN boot mode I was under the impression that its a phone software/firmware related. Can somebody help me on this one? thanks
Hi everyone
here I've got a terrible issue with my note 8 and SAMSUNG USB OTG.
When I connect my otg and a flash memory to phone, nothing happens, unless you force restart the phone while the otg is connected. After booting I can access to my flash memory but after removing the otg and reconnecting it, again nothing happens unless force restarting.
I've tried everything possible. Downgrading, upgrading, 4 files rom, pit file, rom from different zones, but still have the problem. I have no other issues regarding the USB port and charging, fast charging, connection to computer and any other stuff works fun but this OTG.
I wanted to know if anyone have any solutions for my problem or if anyone had the same issue or not.
it is also worth to mention that I have not rooted my phone due to warranty issues, and for that I haven't tested any kernels.
thanks for everyone

That isn't right... As soon as I plug in my OTG USB key it detects it, no restart required.

allow file transfer .... possible
Nope, I have developer options enabled but debugging isn't on. never had to enable file transfer.
When I plug in the OTG device I see a usb icon in the notification panel. Swipe down and pick explore. Mind you it only opens in the stock file explorer, I did have another file explorer that picked it up too but can't think what it is and it has been lost myriad of other apps I test and play with...
Just be aware that it may take a few seconds to scan the device, depending on size, and then display the icon.

i know it sounds weird but from past experience flaky USB drives are more trouble than they are worth, from first hand experience i know patriot, corsair and sandisk work well as OTG drive
also you neglected to mention the file system the USB was formatted with, i believe only FAT, FAT32 and exFAT are supported

also possible that the phone doesn't like your OTG adapter. I bought a usb 2.0 to type C adapter which doesn't even work on the phone - when I plug it in usually the moisture sensor error comes up saying water is in the device and I should let it dry. Unplug the OTG and the error goes away.
So... I bought a USB 3.0 A to type C OTG adapter and that one works fine with everything I've tested (usb flash drives, keyboard, usb ethernet adapter, etc)
I believe the USB-C to USB-A adapter that came with the phone is actually an OTG adapter (tested xbox360 controller and keyboard)
I also believe that the note8 can host usb flash drive native (no need for OTG cable) as i have a dual head USB-C and USB-A flash drive which is recognized once the USB-C end is plugged in

I'm test with any OTG cable or.....not work
also reconnect and again connected but no answer
only with force restart
Sorry to dredge up a semi old thread, but has anyone found a fix for this?
I'm having almost the same issue, I finally decided to try out the OTG adapter from the box and nothing works, it isn't even recognized. Tried ps4 controller, mouse, keyboard 2 different thumb drives. Can't figure out what the deals is.
Other than that pc connection seems to work and charging works fine. TIA
I'm having a similar problem. A month ago, used both OTG adapters (original from Samsung and a generic one) it detects my memory sticks as a hard-disk and was able to manage my files. But since a couple of weeks ago it does not detect them anymore. Is like it did not supply charger to them anymore. I have tried the USB debugging menu and no difference at all. Even I got back to factory reset expecting to solve the issues but nothing happened. The port as such is working perfectly because I'm able to charge through it. On the other hand, Samsung DEX is not working as well. It just charges the phone but never boot-up.
I'm just waiting for Oreo and hopes this will sort the problems out.

That sounds like a bodged port to me man
Is there any dust or dirt in there that you can see?
I really don't think Oreo's gonna fix that for you

Seems to be a little bit dusty. Anyway, the other thing is that, when the Usb is detected it ask to choose between transfer files, images, midi device and so on, even if I choose "transfer files" mode it always get stuck as "charge connected device".
Hi i have the same problem... my note 8 can connected mith my notebook, but my otg with an usb stick cant recognize my note8. I test the same otg with usb stick on my friends phone example S8 and it detects promptly all.
I hope the fixing take not long time. I waiting for help. Greets
Well, adding one more case here, my native file manager doesn't recognize any memory connected via the original otg conector, but, using x-plore file manager, problem solved, as I use x-plore since my symbian days, I never gave this issue much importance, this problem was present also with my note 7

This. I have exactly the same experience. I bought a couple of months ago a new Note 8, and finally decided to try the OTG adapter that came in the box. Nothing worked. I tried the adapter with a friends phone and it worked like magic (USB drives, mice, keyboards, controllers, etc.).
Would really apreaciate if anyone can provide help on this issue... Cheers!
Hi, My phone is showing these symptoms :
If I connect it using USB cable, no USB icon shows up in status bar, PC does not recognize any device connected to it(with or without driver you should be able to see a USB device connected to it) also it wont even charge!
Phone charges fine with charger
If I turn off phone and connect it to PC it will start to charge
Holding volume up and connecting to charger will result in LED turn blue and a black screen but still no USB device shows up in PC for fastboot
If I go into USB Preferences and connect the USB to PC everything is grayed out except enabling charge connected device
what I've tried :
Use different cable
Use different PC
Use different OS(windows10/Linux)
Reboot phone
Removing SD card and SIM card
Factory reset phone
Clean USB port
My phone is using latest Android pie Build 52.0.A.8.14, developer mode and USB debugging is also enabled.
I would appreciate if you let me know how to resolve this If you think it's not a hardware issue
Is there any way to install TWRP without having USB connection to the phone ?

If you don't rely on unlocking, usb data transfer, etc it is fine
I know this is a old thread, but
I have a similar issue, I need this phone for debugging purpose, and I "fixed" it by turn the usb-c around........
Just like the old usb.
I don't know why. I already tried multiple cables, all have "one side connection", it seems it's phone's hardware issue. But I'm not sure.
That's not the case for me, looks like some people are telling this has happened for them after updating to 52.0.A.8.50

I'm also having the same problem with the same phone (android 10 build 52.1.A.2.1).
This problem started yesterday and somehow my SD card is not recognized anymore, it's asking to reformat it.
Rotating the original usb cable does help!
Only it doesn't want to connect to finder on my Mac, I have yet to try a windows pc.
