Which version is the bootloader unlockable? - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Trying to decide between this and the 8t, just needing to clarify which version of the phone has bootloader unlock and root available. I'm in USA and on Verizon. Thanks

I'd buy from the Google store, not from a provider.

ok, are you saying that any pixel 5 bought from the google store would work? And I didn't plan on buying from a provider, just like my current V30 was the US998 which is the international carrier unlocked version bought form B&H photo.
I guess I was asking for an exact model because I would prefer to get it cheaper off maybe ebay, so I wanted to be sure of what I was getting.

Mine's GTT9Q, but I got it from my carrier. Is this something that is Google Store specific?
I'm rooted with unlocked bootloader of course. Got it from Telus in Canada, but the version comes up for many other countries as well. The US is the first listed.

Don't select the Verizon version from the Google Store even if you are using Verizon or the BL will not unlock. In addition, I ordered mine from Amazon and was also able to BL unlock immediately. Attempting to save $$ and buy from ebay or swappa will likely be a frustrating proposition as the model number cannot be used to indicate BL unlock capability. See this thread.

There should be a sticky that's just for Verizon that states bootloader can't be unlocked. Maybe that'll stop all these repeating Verizon bootloader unlock threads

i bought a south american XT1053 on ebay assuming i could unlock the bootloader. when i got it, it had a nextel sim card ready to be installed. got an at&t one from my carrier and it's on LTE but motorola does not allow unlocking the bootloader. back on ebay it goes...
while i have it i'm happy to look into the bands, though i'd imagine it's the same as the t-mobile xt1053 and the gsm dev edition.
Very strange. According to motorola site all Latin America models have unlockable bootloader. Can you please check supported bands?

How do I check supported bands? All I can find in Settings is that I seem to currently be on LTE band 13.
Yeah, that page might imply all of Latin America can unlock their bootloaders but I certainly can't. Got my OEM unlock code via fastboot, and the unlock site says my device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking. The box it came in clearly says XT1053. The label is in spanish. The SIM card says Nextel. In settings it shows the System version is 139.7.30.ghost_row.NII.en.MX. I think NII is basically Nextel (NII also shows up the motorola site as the carrier for the device it sees I have), a carrier in Mexico.

Maybe my situation is a fluke. Maybe something funky with this device but it sure looks like a regular Mexico Nextel device. The box, it's contents and the device all point to a carrier unlocked Mexico Nextel Moto X. Works fine on AT&T LTE but since I can't unlock the bootloader, the only benefit to me is the lack of carrier branding. FWIW I got mine on ebay from http://www.ebay.com/usr/marisolmachado and he was a great seller. Exactly as described, quick shipping, responsive to all of my questions. Just can't unlock the bootloader (which I didn't ask them about).

Whoa! I just bought the same phone from the same seller! I checked to see his previous auction and it was yours!
I wonder if mine is the same as yours. My system version is 139.7.30.ghost_row.NII.en.MX
No idea what that means. Sure as heck hope we can unlock the bootloader on these. Yeah, he was a great seller, I got mine in two days.

This seller also sells Nextel model. Be aware
Just wanted to add that I just checked and mine is not bootloader unlockable either. I have the same Nextel version as the previous poster. This is very unfortunate and now I question whether we will see the camera update. Or when. Darn, had high hopes for this one.

Just a thought...I tried unlocking the bootloader many times and the motorola site told me I could not...after searching, someone here said that you can't even have spaces in the unlock code...so be very sure that you paste all the numbers and to not leave spaces after them as I did and unlocked fine. BTW I tried like 3 times before and the 4th time I didn't paste the numbers, I just did it manually. Hope that helps.

Unlocked S5?

So, I am wanting to get the S5, but I am tired of all the AT7T bloatware that comes on these phones. Plus, being in the military, prefer unlocked phones. So, what are my choices here. Where can I get an unlocked S5 that will fully work on the AT7T network?

The closest you could get is a TMO branded S5 which ships BL Unlocked (at least initial shipments) a few bands may not work though depending on the TMO radio. Also you would need to sim unlock the TMO S5 and buy it outright which I believe is 660.

The expectation is that all American models are region-locked as well. Here is an example of a N. America model with the region-lock warning on it: http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s5-region-lock-367402/

Yours is a two part question. The second part is a definite yes. The first part depends on which phone you buy. You have to be careful that the phone you end up with can be bootloader unlocked. There are many vendors selling phones that are carrier unlocked but cannot be bootloader unlocked. They advertise them as "unlocked". If you are able to buy directly from the Google Store there will be no question that it will work anywhere in the world and the bootloader can be unlocked. If you get the correct one you will not be disappointed!
what @v12xke said.
if you buy from swappa make sure the bootloader is unlockable have them check if the OEM setting is active or grayed out in developer settings.

I'm U.S. based so cannot speak to buying a phone from a UK carrier. I know EE is locked for the first six months and then you have to get a code to unlock it. You could also just buy it direct from Google UK. If you need to finance, they probably have better terms and you will have better customer service and warranty experience? If they let you handle a phone, you can quickly enable developer options and check the "Allow OEM unlocking" setting. If it is grayed out or you cannot toggle it unlocked, then the phone cannot be unlocked as-is. Do a search for this developer option and you will quickly see how to access.
Thanks for that, I might look into buying it outright.
If I go for Vodafone, they allow returns within 14 days.

You don't have to buy it outright from Google, you can finance it through them as well. Here in the U.S. Google has a 15 day no questions asked return policy for a full refund (or exchange). Don't know how it works in the UK. Warning: Carrier unlocked is NOT the same as bootloader unlockable. No Pixel comes BL unlocked out of the box. There is a setting in Developer options that must be toggled on first to allow unlocking. Trouble is, this setting is only available on certain phones. You could easily buy a phone that will work on any carrier (carrier unlocked), but cannot be BL unlocked. Best of luck and let us know what you ended up with.
Is there anyway of knowing which phones are boot loader un-lockable? Or is it just a case of getting the device and looking in the settings?
Having the freedom of an un-lockable boot loader is one of the main reasons I want a Pixel.
I will probably have to go through Vodafone UK. They are offering me 20% off if I upgrade. No-one else can beat that at the moment.
Can get 'Unlimited Max with Entertainment' (Unlimited calls/texts/data and Spotify) for £48.80 or 'Red 20GB with Entertainment' (The same as before with only 20GB data) for £40.80

OEM unlock greyed out

I have a Pixel 5 bought on eBay as an "open box". The thing's awake and generally no obvious signs of problems. But... I want to root it and OEM unlock is grey. Grrr...
I did a "reboot bootloader" and... bootloader "locked".
I assumed (silly me) this thing would be carrier agnostic. It's not.
So... What carrier uses GD1YQ? Let me guess... VZW
If it's not VZW or someone equally evil, how do unlock the bootloader?
BTW, V11 is loaded.

If oem unlock is greyed out, you can't unlock the bootloader.
I got that far,. Some of what I've found with Google suggests this isn't cast in concrete.
I rooted a Samsung S7 from Verizon, which means "don't so much as think about it". NTL the Sammy is rooted and has been for I forget how long.
Am I even more locked out with this unit? Again, does anyone have an idea about which carrier, if any, is associated with QD1YQ? If I read it correctly, some carriers will unlock the bootloader if the owner shows up, phone in hand.
The GD1YQ model is the Google Store model. It's carrier agnostic. Yea.
AFAIK the bootloader can't be unlocked. WTF
is there an image flashing tool for pixel similar to ODIN? otherwise probably no way around VZW crap.

Try this:
Don't insert SIM, but connect to WiFi. Skip through the rest of setup. Once at the home screen, open up Phone and dial *#*#CHECKIN#*#* (*#*#2432546#*#*), you should get a notifcation that says "checkin successfull". Let the phone sit for a few minutes, then reboot and see if OEM Unlocking is enabled. If not, leave it connected to WiFi for a while and come back to it later.

Pixel devices are set up quite differently from Samsung; individual partitions are flashed with images, rather than package files. AFAIK bootloader unlock is still required to use Odin, much as it's required to be able to issue flash commands via ADB.
Wish I'd known that. Drat. Anyway, unloaded the phone for a 4 XL which is now rooted.

The Google store sells 3 models of Pixel 5. Google, Fi, and Verizon. Only the Verizon model is not unlockable. The other 2 are and probably will always be.

That is incorrect, sorry. I have a Google bought Pixel 5 and my wife got the Verizon model on a trade-in. Both are GD1YQ. From what I can understand the only way to determine is to look at the OEM switch after enabling developer options.
When you purchase the phone it will give you the option of the 3. I bought mine from Google for this very reason. People have bought the unlocked phone from Google, received a non-unlockable phone and sent it back. Easy peasy. Just checked the website again. You want the unlocked version... The other screen is my model
Why are you asking this question again? Were the replies in your other thread not enough?

I've posted the question: "Can the Google Store Pixel 5 bootloader be unlocked?" in rooting threads and gotten no reply. The model number is the GD1YQ
