Having a hell of a time fixing this &$¥€©% thing - Google Home

A few days ago, some of my lights, plugged into smart outlets, stopped responding. I couldn't get them to turn off or on via my phone or my Hub.
I tried clearing my app data. No go.
So then I got the bright idea to delete my home entirely. Didn't work, either. Then I realized they had another app of their own I had forgotten I had installed, so I went into that, removed all three, and set them up again. So now those work.
But the one "smart" bulb I have installed, can't be re-added, and I can't seem to add my Hub 2 to the speaker group (my gen1 Hub and Home mini show up, though). The bulb is one of those "C by GE" ones, and I tried resetting it by following the video tutorial. Neither "wax on/wax off" method worked (basically entails turning it off and on repeatedly, counting up to 8 seconds each time). I dunno if it's on an older firmware, or a 2.8+ one, but I didn't get the "3 blinks" reaction it was supposed to elicit, either way.
So, the short of it is, even with the C by GE app, I can no longer control that light bulb or even add it. The Home app, when I choose to add a light bulb, just kicks me back to the main dashboard with all the controls. Even after clearing the app data and storage. And no matter how many times I create and delete a speaker group, I can't add my gen2 Hub to it. It doesn't show as up there, but I can otherwise control it. Wtf.
Any ideas?

Try clearing the system cache.
Try a network reset.
Check settings and permissions of all associated apks. Clear data of the same.
Is all needed hardware enabled and working?
Any new apps, firmware, updates of any kind?
Set updated apps back to factory loads.
Changes you made?
Goggle search for similar reported problems in same make and expand the search if nothing is found.
Play with it... probably something simple*.
*once you find it

Yup, tried all those options and more.

Something changed.
Forgive my ignorance as I like my devices dumb as rain stupid but how are you communicating with them, blue tooth?
I don't reccomend a factory reset as the issue would likely reoccur if you don't find the root cause even if it fixed it initially.
A factory reset would help to determine if a hardware failure had occurred though.

I don't know what changed, as I hadn't added anything to this setup.

Well something changed, either settings, software, firmware or hardware.
Were any apps uninstalled recently?
It's rare on Android but uninstalls can changed buried normally untouchable settings and cause hell.
Most times the operator is the prime suspect... as I've found from experience

If the hub has internet access that opens a new can of worms. Malware is omnipresent at this point with technology.

Never was even aware of that... so the issue may be on the hub side.
Have/can you do a network reset on the hub?
Sometimes, surprisingly, Google will support their products free of charge. Worth a shot.

A network reset is easy and pretty painless.
Try pulling the power and battery to force it to reset.
A factory reset is the last resort. If it had any major firmware updates this becomes more likely to fix the issue.
I couldn't find any option to clear the system cache like on most Androids

I think so but it's just what I saw online.
It may not be easily accessible if so it's not a good option.
A Google search for this issue might net you a solution. Probably more common than you think.

I got the three Google devices added to a speaker group finally, somehow.
The light bulb, though, just ain't showing up. It's no longer kicking me out from the light adding process, though. It just isn't detecting it.

Forgot to update on this.
I did get the GE bulb working. I attempted the factory reset thing again, and seems the third time was the charm. Might have helped that I unplugged the light fixture for a few minutes first.

Smart Lock Settings Disappeared?

I am running an XZ1 Compact US version stock and locked bootloader. I am on the 47.1.A.12.205 firmware and when I go to smart Lock in settings it is blank. Has anyone else had this issue?
Trying to upload screenshots but cannot currently.

Apparently the smartlock feature has been fixed in the latest firmware update.
But if you want to see the page before you update, open settings\lock screen & security, scroll to the bottom and disable smart lock (google) under trust agents, reboot the phone, go back to trust agents, enable smart lock (google), now go back to the smart lock settings and they will be visable.
Latest firmware has not fixed the issue, at least not for me. Smart lock settings still are blank after every reboot. I still have to use the trust agent trick and reboot again.
htc 10, 7.1.2 LOS ROM, same issue here.
after trying everything mentioned, nothing worked.
so I downloaded a newer google play services via apkmirror
it actually froze the device when trying to enter smart lock... thus I went to apps and uninstalled back to the previous version.
bingo bango we have smart lock settings.
worth a try, you lose no data, and is quicker than clearing cache

Smart lock is broken. It holds 'trusted devices' for a couple of days, sometimes only hours. It then resets itself and goes back to a blank page. Google don't seem to be interested in fixing it and although Sony keep up with the security updates, it's not covered by that. Don't hold your breath fir a fix anytime soon.

Hey, sorry for not posting sooner, totally forgot.
I hadn't been checking it, but I only use the on body detection. Is the issue that it is blank AND the services stop working, or is it the blank page problem only?
Onbody detection has been working for me since last posting but as mentioned, forgot to keep checking for blank page. Right now I checked and it isn't blank, however, I do flash gapps relatively often to update the apps. I last did this 2 days ago and I'm thinking that is why it isn't blank right now, but I do feel this is a Google issue as it's on multiple devices and my "method" was just another temp. way around the issue.
I will keep checking daily and post again, (I'll try not to forget again) but I do feel it will be blank soon. I wish we could find a permanent solution, but seems that is on Google.
Didn't mean to stir anything up in the thread here, I was just posting what my phone behavior was.
I'll turn on trusted places and see if that continues to work like Onbody has.
I've been checking multiple times a day since my last posting.
So far it hasn't disappeared, but maybe it has something to do with rebooting?
Clearly I don't reboot often.
Well... At least Android Pie fixed this issue... It was about time.

You need to give more details bud. We are not mediums here.
Which version of the phone do you have? Where did you buy it? Rooted, non-rooted? What weird things, other than taking screenshots? How exactly do you understand that it is taking screenshots, does it give you a notification or do they just appear in the gallery? How often does it happen, is it random or does it also happen when you do certain tasks?
If you need help with such a potentially complicated issue, you need to give as many details as possible so people can help you without guessing everything.
On Android 9 and above it's almost impossible to have an embedded rootkit that a factory reset won't kill. On 8 and below it is.
So it's something you installed (including updates), or that's living in your data or one of the factory installed apps. Fun times

That's complete overkill. More than likely a factory reset is all that's needed... and greater care when downloading.
Pre-Pie OS's are susceptible to rootkits that can breached protected partitions but not the more modern Android versions if I remember correctly.
This is an example of one that requires a reflash to totally wipe it from the phone:

I disagree, tot overkill at all if its a persistent malware. Plus if you want peace of mind it is about as simple of a process as loading the factory ROM. Why take a risk?

When I typed that original post I was using the phone and the keyboard kept screwing up and I was exhausted. I have factory reset the phone. The strange things that were happening like when I'd hit my recent apps tab at the bottom, if open say Ebay app then Chrome. I'd hit the recent and it would show gallery and settings. Since the factory reset it has still been taking screenshots. I've only had this phone about 20 days and got it at bestbuy. It's over the 15 day period to just take it back but hadn't been incredibly long so I guess we will see what they say. I dont do alot of app downloading or visit a bunch of websites and so on so I have no clue how this happened. Here's the real kicker, this stuff is also happening on my wife's phone (a11) I am honestly thinking about throwing the a11 in the trash and trying to get this one replaced. It's so damn frustrating it's caused arguments because I'm the one who will spend time learning how to do stuff with this. Like how to use everything the phone is capable of and can look in the settings and see that the "tracking device" in the settings that can UNLOCK YOUR PHONE, ACCESS YOUR CONTACTS" is the find my phone app that you installed from Samsung. So of course I am a "hacker" and really know nothing about this crap. And she's the person who will download every survey and shopping app she can find. Try something bud, in the settings there is the palm swipe capture option. When you find it try and disable it and see if the issue persists. If your phone has no virus, it might have some issue with the gestures or the screen and it might be getting mistaken that you are trying to make a screenshot.
And regarding your wife, you gotta sit her down, smash on the table with your hand so you can get her attention for a bit, and show her some videos about security and the risks involved with ignorant behaviors in the digital world.
Good luck.

I have the palm swipe off. She reset hers and says it's still doing "weird stuff" but this has been such an extreme issue with us that I can't and won't touch her phone. Because even with her sitting there watching me if I'm going through **** too fast for her to see exactly what's happening it's like I'm asked to slow down and I try to... Then she's will be like well what's this and start touching **** on the screen and u lost where I was in the first place because I then have to explain something that was just there.. Like if I'm in running processes and it's like WHATS THAT. And it will be a system operation that she read somewhere is "a concern for vulnerability" and doesn't understand that it doesn't mean that because that's there that it's a problem.. It's there normally and it is possible that's a way for security to be compromised.. Hopefully you can see the pattern I'm going in..... I am pretty good with this stuff for a power user. I know what oden is.. I know what a ROM is and stuff but I have never actually loaded my own ROM on a phone. And the fact that I sort of understand some of this is working to a huge disadvantage because it's like.. Well you know how to do this stuff so no wonder she's concerned.. When in fact I don't know how to do this stuff.. I made (foolishly) the comment when I was showing a process used by find my phone to her and my sister... The fact that I just showed you this process running that your asking me about you're just viewing it in a different place shows that if I wanted to track you I'd do it and you'd be too stupid to ever find out... And it was just frustration.. I meant Id just look at your Google history or something along that mannor.. Anyways I'm gonna be heading to bestbuy to see what they say.. As far as her phone is concerned I'd rather just spend the 200 bucks and throw it in the trash. I can't do that with the s21 so this is where I am with all this. I wad actually told by my family not to worry about it.. So what if someone steals your bank info it will be fraud and you won't be responsible for it anyway.. So just forget about it and use it....and here I am
This isn't rocket science... or a soap opera
Do a factory reset then change your Google account password.
Don't load anything until it's verified to be functioning ok*.
Then be careful what you load.

Question ClearView cover stopped working after latest One UI update (August)

Hello,
Last night I installed an OTA update (G998BXXU3AUGM) for CSC TPH.
I have a Samsung Clear View cover, and for some reason it stopped working. S21 doesn't recognize it.
After googling, I found that a cache wipe could solve this issue, however, I can't access the recovery menu (volume up + power buttons and the USB cable connected to the PC).
Did this happened to anyone? Any solution for this?
Thnks,
Afonsov
Not specifically with Clear View cover, I did get issues with USB-A connections to a PC following OTA AUGM update on BTU, if relevant try with a USB-C to USB-C cable.

Before you reset, turn of case related settings, take the case off, reboot the phone, put the case back on and re-enable from settings. That is if you didn't already tried it.

I did all that. The weird thing is that in the settings (advanced) there is nothing related to Clear View, and I don't remeber if there was some spectific settings before this last OTA update. I have the Always On Display on. This never happened before after an update.
simplest thing is to submit error report to Samsung Members for help :/
Samsung will eventually correct it.
I wouldn't go too nuts yet...
A factory reset likely will do nothing but waste time. If a factory reset works it was likely a settings issue although it may be a hidden setting that's not normally accessible.

There's no such entry pn Accessibility. In the meantime I reseted and used Odin to reinstal latest firmware but still not working. After googling, I found that this happened before to a lot of people after other updates. They didn't find a way to solve it. I'm sure it is a software problem because the cover was working before this August update.

I sold my S21U just last week so I can't look into that physically but I was using S-view since N10+ and that's what I remember about the settings, something went amiss w/ the latest update I guess. Could it be related to AOD? These things are somewhat related I think.

After reinstalling the latest version of One UI using Odin, tried AOD on and off. Also with NFC. No difference. My wife has a S20 FE with a Clear View Cover, so I can compare settings, but apparentely there are is no specific configuration for the cover. Maybe it is something related to some magnetic or proximity sensor used by the cover. I really don't know. But I googled and found other people with the same problem asking for help from Samsung support but it seems no one found a fix or a solution from Samsung.
This problem is solved. The ClearView cover must have some magnets or passive sensors that stoped working. I bought a new case, same model, and the new one works perfectly. It wasn't anything related to One UI. Although it is a nice cover, I don't recomend it because it may stop work with no way of checking if it is detected or not. In my case, as a coincidence, it happened at the same time I did the last OTA August update.

Random reboots and bootloops

Once and and while my Pixel 5 reboots and gets stuck in a bootloop. It happens while I listen to music with YouTube Music on a bluetooth ear phones or search for updates on the Play Store or nothing at all. I have no idea what is causing this.
I suspect one app called ProCall Mobile but I can't really test for two reasons: 1st it happens to randomly, weeks without one, than two in a row, than nothing for a month, or for few days, 2nd I need the app for my job and can't just remove it for testing.
I'm really annoyed by this, I also can't reset the phone because of reasons. Any ideas how can I narrow it down?
Sounds like something is causing a kernel panic, and it's hard to say what. The best thing I could really recommend is a complete factory reflash, but that requires an unlocked bootloader. I believe there may be a way to use ADB and USB Debugging to get a log dump, but I have no idea how to do that or how to read it.

Sounds like something is causing a kernel panic, and it's hard to say what. The best thing I could really recommend is a complete factory reflash, but that requires an unlocked bootloader. I fear you are right. I think I should set aside a few hours on the weekend to do that.

need the app for my job and can't just remove it for testing.

Nope. If it's your phone, you don't have to keep any app on it. I have never experienced bootlooping or forced reboot on P5. Ask them for a work phone or tablet. It's not like old phones are expensive.

I'm really annoyed by this, I also can't reset the phone because of reasons. Any ideas how can I narrow it down?

Also nope. You can back the entire phone up on google, data reset and reinstall everything.
Try force stop and clear cache in app.
Uninstall reinstall app.
Remove all unused apps.
Check Battery Usage
Go to Dev Options and turn on System Tracing and other debuggin features. I highly doubt you will be able to figure it out from there, but it may help others.

New here and with a weird problem...

Hi all !
I'm a retired recording engineer from eastern Québec, Canada, enjoying retirement and keeping busy buildingand fixing audio equipment and restoring vintage British motorcycles.
I'm having a very strange problem with my Moto G5 (not Plus) that started out of the bue earlier this week. When the phone is locked, be it after locking it manually or after exceeding the preset time, and I receive a call, I do not get the phone logo on the screen anymore. If I want to take the call, the screen remains dark and I can't simply swipe it. I need to press the "start-stop" button, then a white box appears telling me who is calling and the padlock appears at the bottom of the screen. Then I have to trace the security pattern and the phone app appears, but on the in-out call screen instead of showing the button that would allow me to take the call. Instead I have to swipe down in order to get the box that allows me to take the call or reject it. I did countless Google searches and went through all the settings but I couldn't find any mention of that problem. The weird thing is that the phone was working perfectly one night, and then the following morning I had that problem. Can anyone help ?
Welcome to XDA
Was the phone updated overnight?
Clear the system cache if possible on this model.
Try in safe mode to help rule out 3rd party app interference.
It could possibly be a virus, rootkit or the hidden users settings have been corrupted.
The rom itself may have been corrupted, not necessarily anything nefarious... maybe just a high energy particle that flipped a flash memory cell read state. Atomic particles playing god, I hate that
Worse case solutions, factory reset, if that doesn't work reflash last known good firmware.
If all that fails it's likely a hardware failure but this is probably the least likely cause.
Hi !
Thanks for your reply. As far as I can tell there is no recent update. I tried everything you suggested except the factory reset because I dread reinstalling all the apps, but I guess I'll have to bite the bullet. Hoping it's not one of those pretentious atomic particles... ;-)

Try disabling the lock screen etc. Go back to where it needed no password to use.
That's the first thing I tried, no luck... :-(

I'm not familiar with that phone.
In general, try clearing the system cache.
I don't like messing with the phone app data but... first backup your contacts then start clearing data in the associated phone apps.
If a hidden user setting has been toggled it may be very hard to find/correct unless you know how. A factory reset would do so.
If that fails the firmware has become corrupted and needs to be reflashed.
If all that fails it's likely a hardware failure, either the mobo or possibly the C port PCB.
A C port pcb failure can do strange things on a Samsung like loss of internet/phone connection. I bring up the C port pcb because they get a lot of wear and tear... and they're a lot cheaper than a mobo.
