Question Poor call quality (problems with microphones?) - Redmi Note 10 Pro

My sister bought the phone and while talking to her I've noticed how her voice goes from sounding loud and clear starts sounding like she's in a pit few meters away from the phone.
She had a lot of complains from other people regarding this, it happens across different apps, its hard to always replicate 100% but it happens in video calls as well.
I tried some troubleshooting with her and noticed when it happens that top microphone becomes the main one, while bottom one is there for something else as tapping on it produces no noise?
Anyone had any similar issues on this phone or any other Xiaomi phone? Its barely few days old and I'm wondering should she ask for another device or try fixing it its a known problem with this or another Xiaomi device?

I guess you are not alone in this misery. I have seen many people complaining about the sound quality of Redmi Note 10 Pro.
To resolve this problem, you may follow two procedures.
1. At first please try to update the MIUI software to the latest version. You may find a solution of this bug in the updated version.
2. Then check if the microphone is faulty. To do so, enter CIT and perform a test on the main microphone. If you find out that it's not working, then you must take it to a service center.

in-call static/interference/resonance/noise problem

Hi guys,
i think there's a problem in my i9000;
whenever i make a call, i can hear low static interference in the background.
i searched both on xda and elsewhere, and although some other people complained of this problem, no one was able to determine the cause or provide a solution.
i tried different roms, froyo and gingerbread samsung roms, in addition to cm7, with different kernels and modems, heck i even changed my csc(just for sake of changing everything to make sure.. all for nothing. the problem persists.
Does anyone know what might cause such problem and how it may be solved?
i have exactly the same problem. Like you; i tried every combination which i can. I think main cause of the problem is hardware related. But my opinion is ,it can be fixed with device drivers. I looked at service manual. In the speaker part of the service manual, you can see there are two inductors and one capacitor before the speaker module. You can see the full circuit in Service Manual Page 42.
h**p://img191.imageshack.us/img191/2383/speakerj.jpg
I think these inductors(L209,L210) are interferencing with the GSM frequencies and making that static sounds on the background.
We need someone who is an expert on linux and device drivers. Maybe he can show us to find a way to break this circuit(temporarily turn off B1 and A2 pins) in a call so it will not make that sounds.
In the other hand we may have defect phones. May be the only way is to change some parts.
sorry for my bad english.
I think there's something wrong with the speaker itself.
I'm taking the phone to samsung's maintenance to see what they have to say about it.
I'll report back once i get to the bottom of this..
Same here, but it's not constant, just happens enough to be noticable, bloody annoying, and only started (or I only noticed it) a couple of days after JVP. Will be interesting to see what you find out...
One possibility, do you have your phone in a magnetic flip case? Worth checking

No magnetic flip case, just a hybrid (plastic back+sillicon frame) cover.
I even took it off for a while to see if it was causing the problem, but no.
I went to samsung service center and they said it will cost about 200$ because the ear piece comes with the touchscreen..
Meaning i would have to pay for a new touchscreen even though i only need the ear piece.. How about that for service.
I checked ebay and found the whole ear piece+speakerphone+headphone jack in one bundle for 15$
so guess what my next step will be??
Buy and install the ebay part, sell my i9000(never liked tw anyway+cm seems a long way from home).. Had enough samsung for one lifetime
are you sure about the sound is coming from the earpiece ? i am asking because few weeks ago i was also assuming that the interference sound is coming from the earpiece . But i realized that it is coming from the rear speaker. Can you test it ?. In a call ,turn back the phone and put speaker hole to your ear. The interference sound is so loud that you can hear it from the earpiece hole.

Everyday i am searching for answers. Only a very few people experiencing this problem.
I think this problem is coming from the inductors in the speaker circuit part. You can look my first post .

i have this problem too, i live in Romania, i tough my phone was broken, but a friend's phone also does that.
i notice it when making call while 3G data was running in the background. If 3g is off = no noise.
Also i have noticed, the way you hold the phone affects it. try holding it with 3 fingers to your head the covering the mic hole with the other. you should hear some interference right there. so it's probably: speaker+ extra sensitive mic + some antenna things
Also my friend had the phone for some months now and never noticed it i searched the web and we're not alone, i found this discussion on a couple of other forums, still nothing to do, or nobody reported back after they whet to the warranty service. i would go, but i don't have any warranty on mine.
I'm also from Romania and I noticed this annoying issue today. All my other friend with Galaxy S also have this problem, so I guess it's a normal thing.
The only solution, I guess, is to use 3G networks, at the risk of draining a bit more battery.
so bottom line is that on mine, i hear noise/buzzing/interference when i use 3g networks both on the speaker on the back and the earpiece (it's louder if i use 3g data while i'm making a call) - the issues goes away completely in gms(2 g) mode
and it depend on how i'm holding it - it's louder if i grip the phone in my hand (probably the wireless signal is lower and the phone increases the power needed to communicate to the network thus experiencing buzzing sound from the speakers like radios did back with the first cell phones before receiving a call)
so i guess i'm not the only one, right?
This issue is normal I think. No big deal. If the noise however gets so loud that it interferes with your call, get it changed. But the new ones you get might have the noises too. So what is important here is to keep the noise to the minimum.
With / Without the noise is totally an unknown cause now. At least have it settled to the least noisy.
*This is happening to everyone who is getting the phone since November 2010
I confirm this issue with more models.
Hi guys!
Bought myself my GT-S5570 (Galaxy Mini) a couple of months ago. This is my first Android experience. At first I was pleased, but then I noticed this static noise whilst in call. It's like, suddenly I can have ill-isch, distorted, "noise spikes" sort of things. Left my phone in for service under warranty. When I had it back, it was still messy. Bought myself a GT-5660 (Galaxy Gio) a week ago, thinking that this one would clear the issue. It's still there, though. I'm wondering if this is something that affects the whole Galaxy series, even the tougher models like S/S2.
Related threads, by me:
android.net/forum/samsung-galaxy-mini/60951-sudden-volume-spike-during-call.html
androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/307523-samsung-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-static-ear.html
yesterday my cousin bought i9000 too. First of all i looked for the noise. It is interesting that that phone is nearly noise free. If i gave 10 point noise to my i9000 than that phone will be 2 points. You can hardly hear the noise. After that i get her SIM card and test my phone with that sim card.Noise is still there.I make that phone software same with my phone. That phone still has no noise.
I think the problem is in phone parts. Maybe a defected series of speakers used in our phones. I will buy a new speaker module on internet. I hope that fix my problem.
For me it depends more of the network I use than the phone. It happens sometime with an iPhone.
as i stated in my previous post in this thread, in my case i was sure it was the loud-speaker, i say "was" because i sold the phone, and thats the reason why i didn't come back to this thread since..
it seems there was something wrong with the loudspeaker(on the back of the phone), and it was, at least to me, one of those things where a person might not really notice unless you're looking for it.. my bad luck had caused me to flash a certain modem and the reception was bad, so once i reverted to the previous modem i was checking for the sound clarity and that was when i first noticed the static during calls..
then i realized it was coming from the speaker, as one good man in this thread suggested. i couldn't handle it though, i could hear it every time i make a call..
it didn't make a difference whether i was on 3g or gsm or both, it was always there, unless i went into airplane mode..
so i ended up selling the phone, and bought another, but before i had bought it i put my sim inside and made sure there was no static, and there isn't, whatsoever.. thank god.
i'm sorry i couldn't find any other solution to the problem, samsung service here had said they would replace the speaker, as the part comes on its own, unlike the case for the phone speaker, which, according to samsung, is bundled with the screen, and if i had wanted to change it i would have had to pay something like 200$ to fix...
those who have this problem, check if its the loudspeaker on the back of the phone is the actual culprit, and if it is, try to find a way to replace it or something, that is if it bothers you this much. or you can just sell the phone, there's a 99% chance those who buy it won't notice anything, because they're not looking for it..
good luck guys..

[Q] Others can't hear me

Bought Xperia Z3C and from the first day some calls didn't work well... Others couldn't hear me about 60-70% of the calls, sometimes they heard like strong wind is blowing into the mic and when I put the call on loudspeaker then it worked, they heard me loud and clear.
So I took the phone back and ordered a new one, cause I really like Z3C, even more, if it would work with no problems
So my new, second Z3C, same green beauty - but same problem! I tried repairing with the first phone and tried doing the tests, neither helped. Only this time about half of the calls act like that. Sometimes if I put the call on speaker and then back, it works again, but not always.
So my question would be - Has anyone else had this kind of problem? And if so, what did You do? Is there even anything to do? Is it hardware or software?
There is no other phone I would like but it would be silly for me to try the same thing third time.
sorry to hear that,i guess that when you take the calls ,you cover the loudspeaker at the bottom of the phone

Similar thing happened to me, I had to yell first few days untill I discovered I had a bad habit from old mobile phone.
When i talk and holding the phone, my thumb is on the one side, three fingers on the other side, but that little finger is on the bottom, like i hold the phone not to slip down.
And the mic is positioned exactly so my little finger would cover it. That was my reason people couldn't hear me.
I doubt it's your case, but try to see if you do the same thing
Agree with others -- the mic is in a slightly odd place and I had to adjust the way I hold the phone to avoid blocking it in some way. Aren't the mics usually on the bottom left instead of the bottom right like the Z3c?
exact same problem

I have the same problem in All voice communication apps and normal calls.
If i test the microphone at The built in test i get no problem but in skype, Facebook and All other things that uses my Mic it cuts off and makes a windy sound. I was allmost ripping my own head off in anger and confusion because everybody i call is making me say things 5 - 10 times. And now i see im not the only one... What to do? Great phone beside that and headphone and aux volume is adjusting it self..

I had this kind of a problem on the latest firmware (.77) sometimes. How about you try downgrading to an older firmware? Like the .93 firmware which can also be rooted

Got the same problem. After disabling "noise cancellation" (not sure how it's named in English FW) in settings > Call problems is resolved.
But now everyone hears everything within range of the main mic and thats not cool.
Can anyone confirm its related to 23.0.1.A.5.77 Firmware?
On previous version didn't had any issues except phone went underwater and died, and new one is already on the newest fw ;/
Don't want to do root due to guarantee issues after this.

+1 the same issue,
serviceman flushed the original firmware twice
nothing helped, they even refused to refund saying that they can not identify the problem .
Farewell guaranty, I'll try CM mb that will help.
The problem is floating, suspect bad mic contact or bad capacitor installed.
both require disassembling for proof.
Service tests shows that mic is ok.
Does anyone know how to get voltage\capacity curves from mic without disassembling ? mb some test pins on the back ?

And on what Firmware you are?

I had this problem, people did not understand what I said, TrackID was struggling to identify music. You had issues with the main mic - I do not have (luckilly) such an issue. Only 2nd has some problems, but if I launch service tests it records sounds fine. With different quality than 1st mic but records properly.
Mine was recording fine in service tests also (replay sounded ok), but it was apparently not sufficient in calls. I think the service test is very sensitive, with my repaired unit I can whisper at 10 cm and still perfectly understand on the recording.

Please post reply to those questions:
1. Do you have enabled noise-cancelling function.
2. Which mic you test in service menu?

1) Tried both, no difference
2) Tested microphone
Microphone in Z3C is the worst part of the phone
Im also have problems, or people Im talking to via phone, cause previous phone which I still have - SGS 5 mini - has very sensitive mic.
Both my phones are watter proof, also has special membrane, but when Im callling one to another difference are HUGE.
I checked 2 phones of my friends, and thier Z3C's have the same sensitivity, but the dont complain, as suppose they are usualy yelling
In SGS5mini I can rotate phone around the ear and still very louldy and clearly someone can hear me, thera are little diffrences ofcourse, but in Z3C where even when Im trying to have microphone close to mouth sound is much quieter - moving the phone little bit and conversation can be irritating.
It already pissed me off 3 times so much that I ended conversation, because of complaining of the other people.
P.S. Before someone will ask - yes, I disabled noise cancelling function from the begining, also trying different sound settings in call and sound menu.
SOLVED - at least in my case
What I did till today was:
disable any sound "improvements" in menu
cleaning microphone hole with compressed air
After test I saw little improvement, but still I was merely heard by other caller.
Looking mixer_paths.xml tried few times changing parameters and found the right one to rise sensitivity of internal mic.
Below are unchanged section that I'm talking about - in bold specific value that we can rise.
Code:
<path name="handset-mic">
<path name="adc4" />
<!-- 67 % of 124 (range 0 - 124) Register: 0x231 -->
<ctl name="DEC3 Volume" value="[B]83[/B]" />
<!-- 63 % of 19 (range 0 - 19) Register: 0x15F -->
<ctl name="ADC4 Volume" value="12" />
</path>
I choose value=92 as this found to be still safe (don't use to high values as it can damage your device) and I'm pretty happy now of my Z3C
Prepared MOD for this change to apply from recovery.
I've sent mine for repair. They said everything is ok, since repair service does not test calling in real life - just service tests, where this issue is impossible to catch. Had to ask them for "special" test - calling from my phone to somebody, and checking the difference between Noice cancelling feature turned on and off.
Hi any mod for stock ?
My wife have z3c everything was fine just one day start cut off world etc.
Will try with disabled reduce noise option
Any other solution ?
Guys I had the same problem, solved it today
Mine was running latest android 5.0.2(23.1.A.1.28) Z3 compact.
In my Music application(Walkman app updated to Music)-settings-Audio Settings- Mic sensitivity set to High.
Other person can hear me crystal clear
I suspect this is a Bluetooth related issue. I have my Bluetooth always on and when driving and calling there is no issue on car kit. I found an workaround, when calling before connected I press loudspeaker and mute unmute

help mic.

help,
all of a sudden my mic on the phone is crap, i havnt droped it on the floor or anythiing like that.
but today it startet to make a very loud noise so the reciever of call couldnt hear a thing, tryed to restart the phone, it helped but only briefly,
is it a general problem?
or im just unlucky
regards
Hey man,
I just registered to say that I have the same problem. I own Nokia 8 and sometimes when I call with people they cant hear me at all or they can but they hear a loud noise. It looks like it is randomly occuring, I can call the same person 5 minutes later and they can hear me loud and clear all of a sudden.
Its very strange I think its the problem with microphone and I think its software related because I believe camera is using the same microphone for recording and that seems to be fine whenever I record a video.
Messenger/Viber/Whatsapp voice messages doesnt work sometimes tho so its linked. Hopefully this can be solved with via future updates but we should let Nokia know so they can sort this out.

Well in my case its much worse, I bought it from a guy who won it in a Facebook contest from Nokia that was held back in September I think. I am not sure if warranty applies to my phone, I hope so. But even if it did I would have to send it to UK and I am from different country

Tell them that it might be a software issue on Nokia end so I dont think they can do anything with it other than give you a new device.
same here
I found the same here. It is like interference. Since there are 3 mics, is it possible to disable one for testing?
Same here, happened today for the second time! BT and speakerphone modes are not affected, and only calls are affected - recording through an app does not produce the same issue. It's like someone is blowing air with full force into the mic!

Exactly like you describe, blowing air with full force into the mic.
But recently the problem somehow stopped and the mic is working BUT he audio is still damaged I believe because when I record a video there is interference in the background and no way its the same quality as advertised with OZO audio.
I also noticed that it stopped working after CHARGING the phone everytime, so I had to restart it after every charge, so maybe problem with electricty damaging the microphone ?

I have no idea what to do, will have to trash the phone for something else. It's still not working after hours of troubleshooting.
I managed to restore the mic functionality by entering safe mode (by pressing volume down during power up). We'll see how long will it last.
It's back. Nokia never again.

Nokia 8 Oreo. EDIT Ok found the thread - it Was specifically about Receiving calls, but might apply.
SEARCH xda nokia 8 questions & answers speakerphone
First question was 12 march 2018
Possible solutions:- 1 Full factory reset, setup Google account, don't install apps and Try it to see if solved.
2 Use Macrodroid app to turn off speakerphone 1 to 2 seconds into call (wow great app)
3 Press speakerphone icon twice at start of each call
4 Oreo 8.1 seems to have the problem less
Hope This Helps
I think I have solved this problem with my Nokia 8 which had been persistent for the last week.
I just took a household vacuum cleaner and cleaned out all the microphone slots and bingo the problem was solved!
Unfortunately I can't log in to the Nokia community forum to post there, I just get three endlessly pulsating dots, so if anyone can copy and paste this post over there it would be great.
Bad Mike.
I faced the same after last security upgrade. Today it became an issue for ANY call. And nothing I tried/found helped. (Soft resets, charging, Safe mode). Nokia 8 just generated noise like I would be staying on windy hill.
I've contacted Nokia via the Care app. It tooke ONE HOUR but in the end the operator helped me and I hope I've explained they should at least respond on their forum when the issue is reported almost a year. And their developers should know about issue that prevents using of phone for calling.
So the what worked for me part of answer:
- Settings>>Apps&notif>>See all apps>>Phone>>Storage>>Clear cache and Clear data
- Settings>>Apps&notif>>See all apps>>Carrier Services>>Storage>>Clear cache and Clear data
- perform soft restart (Power + Up buttons for 10 secs untill you see powered by Android)
Even before performing of the soft restart it worked again but it should be better to make it as well.
The microphone problem happened to me for the second time yesterday in a couple months. I tried the following, and it did NOT help. That said, the microphone returned to normal later in the day - it seemed to coincide with battery saver kicking as the battery become low.
I wish it would fail hard, so at least I can easily warranty the phone. At present, just when I give up and think about claiming warranty, the phone works again.

I can make calls and no problem but when I wanted to send voice message no success.
Please help me
Mine has been having the same problem for about a month now, had to start using my earphones for calls.
Using Google camera to record the audio is perfectly find, but stock camera and dialer have this noise.
None of the above has helped.
Considering sending it to the Nokia phone repair?

troubleshooting of everyone calling me hearing an echo

Hi! I have successfully conducted troubleshooting of everyone calling me hearing an echo of themselves!
Turns out, there appear to be two settings for microphone detection.
1st when it's uncovered, and the communications are nornal and working well
2nd where it's covered, and the detection is amplified to still hear the op3 user same as before
Problem with the second is, that it detects sound from upper part of the phone, so the other party hears themselves.
In my opinion, the lower limit of detection switching it into 2nd option is too high, because even when uncovered it happens sometimes in bad conditions, far more using phone cover (yes it has microphone uncovered, but there is noticeable difference).
If possible, that limit should be lowered, or the function altered because this echo isn't something a phone of this rank should have.
*I've only assumed how it works by observation, there may even be a curve? That could also be altered. Anyways, it really is an urgent fix in my opinion, I don't know about the rest of you.
To reproduce it, remove cover, take two phones, and call the second phone. Listen to second phone, and cover/uncover microohone on op3.
It happens on stock software or any other rom/framework I've tried so far.
I'm not a phone developer myself, but hope someone can work with this.
Regards, JerryBond
Being a stock issue in hopes of being noticed before the P release and possibly being fixed there, if it's too deep to be fixed in earlier versions? I'm not an expert, but rather safe than sorry, no?
No, you should report IT with oneplus itsself.

Question Calling issue with wired headphones?

Hey! So I have a really weird problem with this phone... Which i originally thought was a hardware problem, but I think I just confirmed that it's not. I will try to explain it:
Noteworthy Items:
1. Long phone calls
2. Wired headsets (I've tried at least 6 different earbuds)
3. This happened to me with the base MIUI, and a custom rom
I spend a good part of my phone time on phone calls, and from time to time, the person on the other line will tell me that they're not hearing audio from my earphone's mic anymore, but rather from the microphone on the phone (particularly like a speaker phone call). If I plug my earphones out and back in again, this fixes it. During this time, if I run my hand over the proximity sensor, my screen will go dark as if I was on call without headphones but all sound is still processing through my earbuds (I hear my caller fine). I installed a custom rom less than a week ago, and I'm still having the same issue so I thought it was hardware-related.
However, today I decided to do something different... I ended the call, and called back without touching any of the hardware (I didn't plug out my earphones or touch the connection in any way) and this fixed the audio issue. I did this three times already to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I'm very confused as to what could be causing this issue. Any ideas?
To confirm, I've used different earbuds but I've never tried to replicate this using wireless earphones (because I don't have any). The issue also happens more commonly if I'm moving too much (this is originally why I thought it was hardware related). If I keep still, or my phone doesn't move, I have this issue less frequently. If any other info is needed, I'm happy to provide, and happier for any help I receive. Thanks!
yea, I also have the same issue. I tried many solutions but still problem persist. has anyone got any solution?
Me too
