Keeping root after OTA update? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Is there any way to keep my Magisk rooted device rooted after an OTA update? Or do I have to patch the new boot.img and flash it in fastboot after every OTA update?

anyone?

I don't remember the exact procedure but it is possible. You should be able to find it in the Magisk thread though. Personally I always found it easier to just patch the new boot.img. Reading through the forums it seems that opinions are mixed at about 50/50 on preference so to each there own.

How do you get official Samsung OTA updates when you're rooted, i didn't think that was even possible.

It's only possible if your phone has an A and B system partition. You are in the Pixel 4 XL forum so I assumed that is what you had. Samsung doesn't support this.

Lollipop XT1092

Anybody got the OTA update for XT1092 already?
Also do you know if I can accept the OTA (once it comes) even though I'm rooted? Or will it fail and I have to do a clean install / revert to stock?
Thanks

Nope, no XT-1092 yet, no word as to when either, although rumour has it we will get it sometime during December. As long as you haven't altered any system apps, you should hopefully be okay with root, although you will loose root once you get the update.

If you have rooted, you can' t unroot and take the update, it will only apply on stock never rooted systems. If you have rooted you will need to flash a stock system image first
Nope... Eagerly waiting....

So who is right?
Once OTA is out, will it be easy for some skilled guys to create a rooted version that one can flash or rather not? I mean root is already available for lollipop

godutch is probably right, I am only speaking from my experience with Nexus devices, I haven't tried it yet with the X

[Q] rooted

I don't think so, however, if you made any changes to your /system directory the OTA will probably fail.

If you're unlocked then no problem regarding gaining root.
But yes you have to unroot to receive update

so can you please give me the link of unrooting the moto x device it would be a great help.
Really? Try scanning threads in this general section. The returning to stock thread always is hovering near the top.
And questions go in the Q&A section.

It depends on which model you have. If you have a model with an unlockable bootloader, you can just re-root when you're done in the same way as you did initially. If you used an exploit on a locked (AT&T/Verizon/Republic) model to get root, it's pretty much guaranteed that you won't be able to get root after the update, and I wouldn't count on another exploit showing up anytime soon, if ever.
You can flash OTA updates while rooted, as long as nothing else is modified or missing from /system and you don't have custom recovery. The update won't remove the su binary either, but permissions will be messed up so it will seem like you're unrooted after you restart.

Root on Lollipop

Hey I really want to get a Droid Turbo and I'm aware it just recieved root. I was wondering if anyone knows if the phone will be able to update to Lollipop with root. I just dont want to buy the phone now, root it and then not be able to update to Lollipop. Thanks
You can just flash stock then take the OTA when it comes.

We don't know that yet as lollipop isn't out yet. As long as moto doesn't patch the mofo system image flash method, we will still be able to cook up a lollipop image with root.
No one knows yet if you take the OTA for Lollipop when that day comes, root will stay or not, or be disabled, or stay enabled. We gotta stay on 4.4.4 until it's confirmed.

Theoretically, even if this method doesn't work for Lollipop, we should still be able to upgrade to Lollipop with root. Given the image files for the new update, we should be able to fastboot flash each individual partition and then mofo the a 5.1 rooted system image. We shouldn't have trouble flashing the correctly signed portions of the update that we need to allow us to maintain a fully matching system.

You cannot flash the kernel...
You cannot flash custom roms or any other android version because you CAN ONLY FLASH SYSTEM not kernel, not aboot, not bootloader, nothing. End of thread. 99% of this forums wouldnt exist if people just read and/or searched instead of starting a new thread for every thought they have.

New update OCXS27.109-48-6

It's security updates up to May 1st. I can't install it though it fails and I am stock with unlocked bootloader.

I'm in the same boat. I just followed this thread and did everything right when restoring my stock ROM for Sprint. The only thing I didn't do was lock the bootloader. I cannot do OTA updates, fails every time. Someone mentioned a few pages in that thread, that right now it's a 50/50 chance due to an unknown variable. Give the forum time we will get it

I'll try tonight after the Gym and see if I can get it to update for me

For me, that variable is twrp. If I flashall to stock I can take the ota, then resinstall twrp and root after. Worked today too.
I was going to install LineageOS and just gave up on it lol. So I flash-all'd back to stock and the OTA worked this time.
So is there a method for clean flashing or i just flash over a rom using fastboot? I tried flashing a retail rom on my tmobile variant, it work but some things were broken.

which flashall did you use? I'm trying to do this too and it fails no matter what. did you also re-lock the boot loader for the ota to work?
I've tried unlocked and locked and it still doesn't take the OTA for me.

oh. I am on T-Mobile. seems that im on december security patch although im on 27.1. something is wrong with my phone...
You'd think Motorola would have released an updated flash-all. Maybe they have?

I doubt it. The Feb release of the Dec update got released two months later. (Apr 7th)
This phone is really weird. I got the update to work the very first time I flashall but twrp bootlooped and it won't install after the second flashall, tried multiple times.
This phone is really software wonky
the zip files from Tmobiie are NASH_TMO_C_OCX27.109-51.... Does anyone know the difference between this and the OCX27.109-48-6?

When the update first came out, the December path I think, it was simply generic Android security updates, nothing specific to our phone or fixes, at least for the TMobile version

[AT&T variant] Any advantage to staying on an earlier bootloader?

My S10 is currently running the bootloader it came with out of the box, ending with ASBA. I am wondering if anyone knows if it will be beneficial later in the future to stay on this old bootloader (in case a root method is discovered maybe) or would I be better off taking the OTA to the latest firmware?

If it's the US version then I'd say take the OTA. A root method is almost certainly never coming so you're only delaying possibly important security patches and system updates.
