I've been using an s20 FE 5g. It's a great phone but touch screen issues, of course you can't root the thing and avoid mandatory software updates, news about the glass over the camera breaking, I also just got really tired of not being able to control my own phone. So I bought a used s9 exynos.
I went through a couple of root tutorials online but the one that finally worked was: https://www.thecustomdroid.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-plus-root/
With other methods I kept getting boot loops and couldn't mount the system.
Anyway, this seems to have worked for me, so I'm putting it out there in case anyone needs it. And now some terms in case someone does a google search:
root galaxy s9 android 10 sm-g960f
Have you been able to restore all or some of the functionality that's lost by tripping Knox, such as Secure Folder, Samsung Health, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, iris scanner, logging into secure apps with the fingerprint reader? I've read about MagiskHide but apparently that doesn't work for everything, and I've seen some application-specific instructions, but I'd very much like to hear from someone who knows from experience what lost functionality can be restored and what gotchas you can run into.

Thanks! I had the same experience you had trying to root my S9 Plus (SM-G965FD) on Android 10 One UI 2.5. This guide worked for me!

Hi, I've had my Note 5 since release day and I haven't done much to it since.
I want to do a fresh reinstall since there's a lot of crap on there after 2 years and it's pretty bloated. I've taken note of apps I have, settings, etc. Should there be anything else I do before a reinstall?
I'm also a bit interested in rooting for stuff like adblockers, backups, etc. I remember searching about it a year ago and rooting messed up something with Knox, is that still a problem?
I have the model SM-N920W8 with Android version 6.0.1. Would there be any further updates worth trying out?
Thanks for any help!
Make sure that you backup on your google account and samsung account.
Samsung account will also back up your S-notes and sketches.
I would also like to root, but the knox tripping issue and the fact that some apps (e.g. Barclays banking) won't work if they detect root, puts me off for this device.
A fresh install can definitely bring new life, but make sure you run package-disabler to de-bloat the phone.
good luck
Hello everyone,
I have always been an iPhone user since the first iPhone was released back in 2007; however, I have decided I would like to switch to Android as jailbreaks become less frequent on iOS.
I want to get the Samsung S10 Plus Exynos but I had a couple of questions.
If I purchase this device, will by be able to have root access without an exploit needed?
From what I understand, enabling root will trip Knox. I also understand that certain apps made by Samsung won't work like Samsung Heath and Samsung pay. But will other apps work fine like Pokemon go or various banking apps?
Is there a better flagship phone with root that I might want to look into getting instead?
This is all very new to me as I have always been with iOS and I would truly appreciate any advice you all can give. I have been doing extraneous amounts of research, and I will continue to do so, but these are just a couple of questions that I havent been able to find an answer to as of yet.

1.No you wont use any exploit.
2.Yes samsung pay and samsung pass wont work.Pokemon and banking apps work as long as you dont heavily debloat.Samsung health and secure folder work.
3.No there isnt
First update phone to latest version (ASII) with odin.(Get the firmware via Frija and flash via odin).Install samsung drivers and extract what you downloaded from Frija
In odin there are 4 slots. In Ap put Ap file.Bl in Bl.CP in CP and Csc in Csc.(PUT CSC NOT HOME_CSC).then boot phone in download mode(turn it off and hold bixby and volume down then plug in the usb cable Connected To The PC).In odin click start and wait until it boots..Go to youtube and search for max lee how to root s10.Then go to Xda in S10e/S10/S10+/S10 5G cross development and install TWRP by Geiti94 with his instructions.(Optional but recommended) install any custom rom available (CarHDMod,BeyondROM,LineageOS,LightROM and HadesRom).I personally recommend you to install hades rom with corsicanu's instructions. Then you have a rooted and custom rommed phone!
Hey all!
I'll do the long story short: I am stuck on a Korean Note 9 in Europe, which means no Samsung pay for me.
Now, since I can't get Samsung Pay, and I saw I can't instal Google pay either(not sure why the Play store wouldn't let me), I have been contemplating before setting up my Note, to maybe root it, and going stock european ROM.
I have rooted multiple phones in the past, but I am not sure if it's worth it in the present, as the UIs are pretty good and complete.
Now my question is, do I lose anything else by rooting? Could someone Eli~10 what that knox fuse tripping means for future limitations/possibilities? Also, besides my reason to set custom dpi for an app, why else would one root its Note 9 nowadays?
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure you lose Private Folder and maybe Samsung Health if you root. I'd consider rooting only for Viper4Android & the YouTube Background Playback xposed module. But I saw there is xposed for non-rooted phones & Note9 has Dolby Atmos so I think this will be my first android phone that I won't root (don't even need root anymore).
It is personal preference, but all apps that require Knox will cease to work, so almost all payment apps will be of no use. While the first comment said S Health would no longer work, months ago a workaround was found to get it to work. Many apps I like require root, but there are nonroot workarounds for most of them.

And which are specifically the apps that require Knox to work?
I don't know all of them. The only ones I know are Samsung Pay, Samsung Pass, Secure Folder, and Adhell, but development of Adhell ceased months ago. There are definitely more.
I had the same dilemma when I first bought my Note 9. For a couple of seconds. Then, I rooted it as I do with every Android phone I get since 2009.
Any app, website, or service that demands a non-rooted device goes automatically to my black list.
The main things I'm looking for are reinstalling adaway or any other adblocker that needs to access the hosts file, and 1080p60 rear camera recording. I've learned to live without the former, and I'm not holding my breath that Samsung will enable the latter even tho it works on the A70 and there are mods to make it work on rooted A71. I bought my A71 on Amazon, as far as I know it has no warranty because it's the international edition so I don't really care about tripping Knox. I know that OTA updates are disabled, but I've used Odin in the past and am familiar with how to flash stock updates with it. I have read that rooted devices can't use Google Pay/Samsung Pay, but can be fixed with MagiskHide -- is this correct? I don't really care about custom roms, stock is fine and much better than touchwiz from my previous samsung S4. Is there anything else that I would potentially lose out on that doesn't have a workaround?
Thanks

Rooting is pointless and a total waste of time, imo no phone really needs to be rooted as they are good enough as they come.

There is a really cool alternative to adaway called blokada. I use it on both unrooted and rooted devices, it works pretty good.
Tripping knox is something that stays forever, so it's a really important decision to make. I've been tripping knox since it was introduced a few generations ago so I'm not really missing anything lol.
I have no way of testing Google Pay since it's not supported by my bank, but I can at least open it and attempt to register a payment method so I think that maybe it may be useable for banks that support it.
Samsung Pay, for now, totally depends on the knox fuse, so it won't work again even if you go back to fully locked stock
Samsung Pass is also lost with the knox fuse blown, with no current workaround, but I find the Google Password manager to be just as good
Secure Folder is also broken in stock, so you'll have to either fix it or install a custom ROM that has it fixed if you want to ever use it again
And finally, widevine is set to L3 which means you will only be able to stream in 720p with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. I don't know if this is set to L1 by default on the A71 stock firmware(I rooted way before I knew what widevine even was) so I suggest you check your Netflix playback information on settings to see if you have Widevine L1 there. If it is, you can currently play stuff in full HD. If it's L3 even in stock A71 firmware then ignore this whole sentence lol.
Thanks for the detailed reply.

I've read a bit on Google Pay, seems like a lot of work to get it working on a rooted device with Magisk. But on the other hand I haven't really used it up to now, although it is nice to have in case I forget my wallet when going out. Never used the other features you mentioned, and I don't use my phone for watching netflix/prime, just YouTube. Do you know if lack of Widevine L1 could prevent casting of HD/UHD content from my phone to a tv, or limit YouTube on the phone to 720p? I do cast a lot of live sports from http links using Web Video Caster to my TV.
To me it looks like the big thing I'm missing on stock is 1080p60 rear camera, which I believe your ROM has, and looking at the videos on my wife's iphone xr it makes a huge difference. From reading your other posts, it looks like it's just a setting in an xml file to enable it on the phone, and I'm sure if it could be done without rooting everyone would be doing it. I guess it's up to Samsung to enable this feature in One UI 3.0 or some future update. I think if it doesn't happen in One UI 3.0 I will go ahead and root.
Thanks again.

Widevine only effects things that could stream copy-righted material (that are ultra secure) like Netflix and Prime Video. It has no effect on Youtube, you should be good to go.

Yes it literally only takes one edit on a text file to enable it. I don't know why Samsung went out of their way to keep it off of the A71. Weird since this is a 2020 phone, you would think that they would enable as much features as possible to get it to sell. Sometimes I don't know what Samsung is thinking. What may happen is that Samsung adds 60 fps recording and calls it "We added a brand new, exciting feature to the mid-range phones" but I HIGHLY doubt it, who knows.

I don't know if it's a matter of opening Google Pay, but maybe adding cards and using the device for NFC payment. Here's the thread where I read the solution, the post is pretty lengthy:

The only negative (with no workaround) is the lost of drm, widevide switches from level 1 to level 3. This happens by unlocking bootloader actually, but that's a required step towards rooting.
This won't allow you to stream HD drm protected content, like from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Probably won't be able to stream Atmos music on Tidal too, but I'm not sure about this one.
They say widevide goes back to L1 after relocking bootloader but haven't tried (yet?) and I had an opposite experience with an older phone where it never came back.

Sir, if you ever unroot and relock bootloader please let know on forum if Widevide goes back to L1.
Thank you
Seems like a stupid question, but yes I bought a 2213 EU version, unlocked the bootloader, rooted it the right way, did everything to pass safety net, device is play protect registered, getprop ro.boot.verifiedbootstate returns green, Google Pay works fine after root, DRM Info shows Widevine L1
Netflix won't install (not compatible with device)
HBOMax won't play
Peacock won't install
Hulu won't install
Is this possibly a OnePLus bug on the new NE2213_11_A.15 build, some new rooting thing with Android 12, bad luck, or is there some solution that I need to install?
I may be haded right back to the trusty OnePlus 8 Pro....which has none of these issues and has the Macro Camera which I actually miss....
Thanks in advance for any suggestions....
Also, if anyone in the US needs dual SIM, the EU versions supports all the US bands (and more), is dual SIM, and works flawlessly with T-Mobile...5G, VoWiFi, everything.
Same thing for me, i live in Sweden and we have Cmore & Discovery here that refuse to play after bootloader unlock and root, no magisk hide solution have worked for me. Maybe bootloader unlock with no root works, but cant try because my OP10 is bricked. My old OP9 was working perfect with all the streaming, i now have Xiaomi 12 Pro and was afraid the same thing would happend with this phone, only unlocked bootloader on this phone but no root and everything works 100%, streaming apps, gpay.
It just seems there is something wrong here in the way that OnePlus certified this device. Other Android 12 devices can be rooted without all these issue, right?
Can people US or Chinese / Indian versions get rooted and have access to the Streaming services?

I have Hulu Disney plus and Netflix working but only play when streamed to my Chromecast. On device play doesn't work and only plays L3 even though device reads L1. Believe it's to deal with bootloader unlock and not root. But others posted that it was a OnePlus issue and was supposed to be resolved but hasn't been.

It's a issue with this particular Snapdragon chip. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 uses the same processor and has the exact same problem.

How can it be the chip. It could be the kernel associated didn't have correct commits from snapdragon. But still the drm is in the secure partition on our device that can't be altered also.

Not sure, but that's the only common link between both devices from different manufacturers. They're basically using the same work around we are. I'll be testing it out shortly also since my S8 was just delivered.
It is just fundamentally blocking anything having to do with DRM. You can't even spoof the user agent and watch any streaming service through a browser -- it ask if the browser can play secure content (you say yes) and then gives an error. I am not even that much of a TV / Movie guy, but to be 100% blocked from any streaming just for rooting a device you own????
Pretty F&*^in extreme if you asked me....
The only question is do I wait for someone to hack it (if that's even possible), or do I just go back to my trusty OP 8 Pro and sell this...?
Are there any Android 12 rootable phones that don't have this issue...or is it all Android 12 phones?

That's what DRM Info showed.
But for me it's all moot at this point. Yesterday, Google Pay stopped working (some new detection thing I presume), so I attempted to relock the bootloader with
./fastboot flashing lock
at which point the device started going into an infinite power cycle instant reboot no way to get into FASTBOOT, or Recovery or turn off the phone. So I just returning the phone and going back to OnePLus 8 / Android 11 where you can be fully rooted and everything just works.
What a disappointment and waste of time.
Thanks for everyone who offerred suggestions...I'll try back in 6 months or so and see if any of this gets sorted out.
It's not "issues with the chip". Google upped their ante with root detection, which breaks everything from netflix to google pay. See this thread.
I was the OP and had to return my bricked OP10Pro under the 30 day return period.
Anyway, I bought a Google 512GB Pixel 6 Pro used, rooted it, and did the basic stuff I have done since the OP8Pro -- and everything works -- GPay, Netflix, no DRM issues and no hassles.
So maybe it is the chip, but if google had "upped their game" I would think it would be with their own phones especially since the Tensor SOC (co developed with Samsung) has a trusted security module.
As far as the phones go, the Pixel Pro is heavier and the battery charges slower, but you get dual SIM and it works on all USA/Worldside 5G networks and bands. And the cameras are top notch. So kind of a tossup I guess.
