Should I upgrade, and risk loosing all my data in order to unlock my bootloader so I can get Android M a little early? Is it worth it?
PS. Does the HTC One Camera MOD work with it too?
There is unfortunately no real answer to this, it is personal preference.
If you plan on rooting or doing other things which would require an unlocked bootloader, the sooner you take the plunge the better. The longer you wait, the more that piles up on your phone. Backup the stuff you don't want to lose and unlock.
No, I suggest you wait two more days for the Google event to see when they are going release the OTAs for Android 6.0
I think it will be released in these two weeks and so you don't need to unlock your phone, keeping your warranty
I heard it was releasing October 9th for the nexus 6, so I'd wait
I'm on M preview 3 now, and it works like a charm. But you can't root it without a custom kernel, so there are no baby steps.

I’ve prereserved my Note 9, and while waiting for the release date I’m scrolling through the news and forums just to get teased a bit more
A question I’m asking myself though, is: do I really need to root this phone? I’ll lose some functionalities by rooting it (samsung pay/android pay, safetynet apps, knox...) but I’ll surely miss others too (adaway, xposed, tweaks...)
I always rooted all my devices unconditionnaly, like it’s part of my default setup, but do you guys think it’s still needed those days? Is there really a benefit, or can you live without root?
I use to be an avid 'root my phone asap' kinda guy, but the main reason was for wireless hotspot. It's included in most plans now, so I don't feel the need to. I liked getting a cleaner build, less bloatware. To each there own, but with a locked bootloader here in the US it may be a while as you'll need a unlocked version. Carriers here will have it locked down.
the first thing i'm going to do with the phone when i get it is rooting it, hopefully there is a working twrp and there is no oem timeout for unlocking the bootloader.
i can't live without adaway and titanium backup.

Not worth it anymore. Used to be mandatory when Android wasn't as feature rich and mature, but no reason for me to anymore.
In my case root would be needed only for app data transfer from the old phone. After that I don't see the need of root.
Anyway.. how about knox fuse trip and warranty?

I used to root, but not any more. I get the US unlocked version to cut down on the bloatware. Samsung has made it sooo easy to theme and skin the phone that it's pointless to root for that. Samsung pay is awesome and I use it more and more every day. Smart Switch has taken the place of Titanium back up, and it's free and very simple to use. Also with the 512gb version I ordered , not too worried about the few programs that I dont like but are included.

I used to root the second i got a device, however since the 8 and also with the 9 i dont bother any more, all the reasons before were to get better battery life slim down etc, i just use package disable pro now and im done. Besides no point in tripping knox loosing secure folder and faffimng around to get google pay working etc. I love to tinker but the benefits are just not there any more imho
Most probably first phone i will not root. especially for warranty purpose with the know feature
Thanks for the input Now that I have some answers I can give my insights too. I think I'll (be able to) wait a few days before being tempted to root it, but I'm pretty sure there will be a day, especially when Samsung will drop updates and I'll have to use custom ROMs if I want to stay up to date or maybe get the Note 10 port
The things I would miss if I don't root are: Adaway, TWRP (flashing and full backup/restore), MyBackup Pro, debloating, Xposed probably, Viper4Android maybe.
I have been a root on day one guy myself forever. Interesting that people here have not mentioned the privacy issues with all my carrier's supplied bloatware. That crap goes immmmmediately. That was the main reason for rooting for me.

Ultimately, you don't necessarily have to root to debloat. You can just flash and use TWRP for this. Although when you boot into TWRP it triggers Knox and you lose those related functionalities.
This will be the second phone im not gonna root. First was the pixel 3 i need samsung pay in my life and plus im getting the locked sprint version. Im scared tho i really do want a clean build. Going with sammy since the s6. I dont want a phone with a notch so i figure i use my upgrade this year
I will always root the 1st day. Titanium backup, ad-away, TWRP, custom roms with 3minit battery, ability to customize volume buttons, VIPER4ANDROID, sooo many more reasons why. Stock is boring and dull. No reason to be on XDA if you are not rooting and using developers creations.

I personally stopped rooting since the Note 7 / S7E. I now find Samsung experience to offer me more than enough to keep from rooting. I've rooted all my phones since from the Dream G1 to Galaxy S1, Note 2, to the Note 4.
I root day 0 or I don't buy. Phone is worthless without Titanium backup, ad-away, TWRP.
i'm leaning towards no root. but it may be difficult to swallow at first, i think i've rooted the last 4 galaxies i've had... before that was a Nokia. I will undoubtedly miss ad-away, and i've made good use of Xposed on my recent Note5, but many people mention TitaniumBackup and i just don't use it much anymore. I have done a couple full backups with TWRP and used restore from it a couple times, but lets face it... those are things i wouldn't need if a hadn't broke something in a Root function in the first place! All in all, hoping for the best without Root - I want Knox intact. If you guys don't hear from me in the next week or two, i drowned in advertisements.

I'd rather have the option, but, no such animal for US Samsung devices.
I can deal w/o it on Samsung devices, thanks to Package Disabler Pro & the ad blocking app Block-This.

No, but, this gives me the best of what's important to me with the minimum of compromises.
No interest in non-Samsung based ROMs for this phone, why bother picking up a Note to strip it of its unique features........
Currently using a VZW Note 5 using Package Disabler Pro & Block-This..... Doing just fine, the pragmatic part of my twisted mind (on life support, LOL) tells me to save my money & wait until next year, but, I bought this particular phone in great condition @ a great price, to use solely as a trade-in for T-Mobile"s $500 bill credit.....

I went from a rooted Nexus 6P to a P20 Pro a few months ago. While I like the hardware, love the camera, I am not a fan of the EMUI Android OS skin, or the lack of root. I specifically prefer the GApps over the Huawei ecosystem of apps that comes pre-installed.
I would like to install a 'stock' Android ROM, similar to my old Nexus 6P, including root. However, I am a bit overwhelmed by all the options available, required steps to get there and the issues people seem to be having. Especially compared to my old Nexus 6P where unlocking and rooting were a breeze.
Note that I am not that experienced with rooting and custom android roms, but I got around my Nexus 6P and guides pretty well.
Could you please point me in the direction what steps I need to take in my situation?
I reckon I first need to unlock my bootloader. I saw some retailers starting to offer these again. Will keep a close eye on those developments!
What ROM should I go for that best reflects the 'stock' Android experience with as few customizations as possible? I figured LineageOS or CypherOS are the most popular and well maintained roms.
I always updated my P20 Pro to the latest version whenever it came out. Is that an issue and/or should I downgrade first?
Can I get the same camera experience on the custom 'stock' Android ROMs? The one thing I like about the Huawei software is the camera that fully uses the 3 hardware lenses.
How is the device updated after installing a custom ROM. Does it support OTAs? On my Nexus 6P I had to manually flash the monthly updates which got quite annoying.
Any other tips, risks or things I should know before starting?

I'm also on that quest to @chillzilla. No one has responded a couple of videos online especially the tutorial for the lineage OS.
Got my code off FH last Friday and unlocked the bootloader.
Since then, I have been trying to work out how to root it and then rebrand it.
Not found anything concrete to work from yet, a lot of guides are old.
I heard about open kirin and I think it's could be the best usage right now, about the camera you can install the apk file of the real rom it's works like a charm. Fill free to take a look I created a poll about the best rom that we can use and see the options and choose what you want to like.

This seems so much better than a pixel 4a/OP 7t and within 100 dollars used....I am returning my pixel 4a due to the poor battery life compared to my gs8 that its replacing.

Not gonna lie, I don't understand the ongoing interest in rooting/customs ROMs. The last time I rooted a phone was a Galaxy Note 2 - and then only because it had stopped receiving updates, and the custom ROM used a newer version of Android. With a new phone like the S20 FE, it just seems you stand to lose much more than you could possibly gain (e.g., Samsung pay, monthly security updates, full Android updates) - I just don't get it.

I was gonna reply yesterday that I wouldn't put a custom rom like lineage on a new phone that's still getting support. that would be moving from 99% functionality to maybe 75 - 80%.
that said I would root for things like adaway, v4a and minminguard and if the support was there I would replace the stock rom with a stripped down version with extra features like GCam. if the support was there the monthly security updates and continuing Sammy releases could be flashed just as easily as update zips. after the first 3 years all bets would be off, AOSP all the way.
I will never care about Knox, if an employer wants me to have a secure phone for work they can provide one. this phone is mine.

1. they can security patch your ****t AFTER you root, from what I understand, correct me if I'm wrong
2. Some of us like security for a number of reasons (ie travelign to autocratic countries where there is no personal privacy)
3. Far easier to have hard backups and restores of phones. I get a new phone? I just titanium restore it. Some of us don't like sharing data with the govt.
4. you ever try to pixelize and de-bloat a samsung stock phone? It's a nightmare.
a couple of days ago I saw that the FE 5G was just about to go on-sale in India, hopefully that means a few more devs may come to this forum.
I'm excited for development on this device and I thoroughly enjoy vanilla Android and custom ROMs.
I have more resources to play with typically and I can overclock or underclock my CPU/GPU for best performance and battery. Everything can be customized.
Maybe I could have gotten another device that isn't bloated but this was my only option.
If I had a test FE 5G I would start baking some things up. This is my only phone and I would be out of work without it so, no go testing on my own.
the GSI roms must be pretty close to making workable, I'm sure there'd be many happy testers available.
EDIT: a reddit user has claimed to have flashed the Havoc rom GSI. I've asked for him to share the procedure he followed. if he does that's 2 or 3 GSI roms we can use if nothing else.
EDIT2: seems he just followed guidance from the thread itself and was able to just flash the GSI via TWRP. unlocked bootloaders are a must and there are bugs, being fingerprint reader not working and no video capture @60fps
anyone here that's desperate to try another rom can flash TWRP and backup and try out any of the A/B phh Treble GSI roms. there's even phh magisk. for now it looks like this is as good as we're gonna get.

So considering you just switched back to Android, you more than likely won't be able to root this phone if you've ever updated it since March. If you bought it after that, then it already comes with that update =/.
Long story short, if you live in the US, there's no point to buying a Samsung device anymore as they're disallowing custom development (which is among my favorite things about Android)... I essentially got this phone just after a hospital release from an sTBI. Due to the accident, I hadn't looked into what Samsung had been doing since my last Samsung device (which was the Note 3). But unfortunately, they've been stepping away from everything that impressed a nerd like me, lol. So I'm essentially never going back to Samsung once two years pass, haha. I'm probably going to get a device that actually allows for customization in the US....so basically any other company, but I'll probably be going back to the Pixel lineup as the upcoming one is the first ever Pixel in a LOOONG time to get a completely new camera module. So I'm assuming that the image processing system has gotten a massive update as well and that that phone might just take some absolutely outstanding photos.
