As I saw every ROM installation guide says I need to format data , I don't have PC to backup my data every time I flash ROM. So is there any way?
try Google backup if you can't on a PC
I have a computer but I still use Google backups
NO AND NEVER. You can buy Micro SD card to save your data on it
what is super backup. is it related to this?

As stated in the title, does flashing a new ROM erase data on the built-in flash drive such as contacts, apps, appdata, music, videos, pictures etc?
I'm rather new to ROM flashing.
short answer: Yes with an If, long answer: No -- with a But...
When flashing a new ROM to an Android phone its a good idea to do as its creator has advised and wipe data/factory reset and wipe dalvik cache all via ClockworkMod recovery, that way there is no additional bloat ware or old system data to gum up the works,, anything stored on the phone (contacts/system data) is erased anything on the 'internal storage' (8GB or so on the XL) or memory card is spared, so anything backed up to there will be safe
Its worth making note that when first installing a ROM, most if not all work on A2SD/ADSD+/+ etc, this is where your given the option to store app data on the memory card, in devices where you can take out the memory card you will need to format it (via ClockWorkMod recovery) and sort out the size of your 'hidden' EX3/4 partition that app data is stored on. formating and partitioning yor memory card wipes everything on it so back it up to a PC before doing anything!
Additional Note: Since the XL has internal storage make sure you get everything you want off it first then when we have CWM working on the XL format the crap out of the internal storage and have fun!

Ahhhh I see. So if I want to flash a new ROM, I have to back up everything on my own then manually re-enter them.
Thanks for enlightening.
Pretty much yeh, always a good idea to manually do a backup every now and again,, once you have your ex3/4 partition apps data will be restored when you reinstal the app, also Titanium Backup w/root permissions on a fully ROMd device will restore data in the same way too (if you backup with root access the first time etc)
i am having complete nandroid backup of asylum cm10.1nightly with asylum kernel cm10.1 with all apps and data. same kind of back up with stunner 2 2.4.2 and nx kernel 1.0.9. can i restore either of backup anytime i want. i mean swithover from asylum to stunner or vice versa. do i need all wipe data/cache/dalvik/format system/data/ache/ preload. once i tried to restore by doing so in the procees of switchover and restoration of backup from CWM, restoration terminated from "data restoration" my phone booted and stuck at samsung gt-n7000. second time i repeated same process in CWM and phone booted and took me to basic setup and after basic setup i checked that i lost all my apps installed and data also.
what could be reason. am i missing some step. is it possible to do so? tried lot to search about this but could not find an answer.
can someone pls help.
yes u need to do a full wipe if it's different rom.

my nandroid message after generating md5 gave me message as back up is complete. steps while backup shows are backing boot image/recovery/system/data/cache/android secure/preload/efs and md5 generation.
so i dont think there is problem with backup. also i have suffiecient space in my ext sd card. 32gb card and haft empty. backup saves in clockwordmod folder in ext sd.
is it the problem of cwm recovery or gapps package of aosp rom and aokp rom. both dated 20130301.
i really want to know. because everytime one swichover from one rom to other after full wipe he has to redownload and install apps from play store which were installed on previous rom. everytime time one has to download from play store over wifi or 3g.
someone pls help.

did you ever find an answer to this? I have been experiencing similar problems.
I have installed custom rom from zip and used it for several weeks.
Today I have decided to try new rom and I have made a backup trough CWM (6.0.2.5) in format .tar
I have tried to restore the backup. but the phone gives me a really strange error.
Encryption Failed. The system .. bla bla bla ... you need to reset your phone ..
I have tried to factory reset trough CWM, but the problem is the same.
I have tried to restore older backup ... the same error ...
Any ideas what is the problem and now to fix it (restore the rom)
I have tried the following ..
1. format /system /cache / data
2. install custom rom (CivZ v3.0)
3. take the setup wizard
4. reboot into recovery (CWM 6.0.2.5)
5. backup (.tar format)
6. restore from the backup
and .. the same error and no working rom ..
Can this be an internal SD memory problem ?
Any ideas ???
Anyone
Try backing up to external SD card. If that works, or you dont have an external SD card, backup and repartition your internal SD using AIO toolkit (choice 4 in the toolkit, then select the new unlocked ICS bootloader, and 512 MB system partition, or whatever your preferred size is, then run the internal SD fixer which follows that step) and try again.
The backup is on external SD
I have already repartitioned the internal SD with the default ICS layout (1.5G system)

Then try backing up to the internal SD and also try changing recovery to TWRP.
I have already tried TWRP but it cannot restore CWM backup
Currently I have stock rom , but I cannot rollback to the previous rom backup.
a few days ago I have used some app (found here in XDA) for optimizing internal SD .. is it possible this app to broke something in the internal SD ?

Hi! I assume that you were using the stock ics rom. Right? Stock ics use system partition as ext4 but data and cache are used as ext3. Since TWRP and CWM format data and cache as ext4 you cannot use your old backup of stock ics rom, unless you format both (data and cache) to ext3.
I created a zip which converts data and cache to ext3. Download from my attachment.
Flash the zip file then restore your backup.
Thanks :victory:
I will try
Royaly messed up my phone, once again thru modding. No harm really. Before i wiped the system, I did make a backup of the data, and saved it on my SD card. Now my phone is not booting up at all, but I can access the bootloader. If there any way I can access my SD card, so I can pull the data, erase everything and RSD back to stock?
If not, its cool, I will just RSD / stock
Uh.. the phone doesn't have an sd card slot.. so no.
If you look at the file system, the storage area is called sdcard. The op was asking about that.
Use the tool here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597625
I'm fairly certain you can flash back to stock without wiping your data. After that, I'd recover your data and do a full wipe using that same utility.
Good luck.
Hi, I want to install custom rom but I think because of encryption I lost my all internal storage :/
Before mi 9t pro, I used an old android phone. Because of that I didn't know too much about encrption.
When I open OrangeFox it asks my password. So I thought remove my password before any rom installation should be enough.
I remove my password. After dirty rom flash my phone didn't boot to system but did boot to recovery.
Guess what? All my file names are random
Before anyone say, I have a backup. But where Yesss it is in internal storage with encryption
I tried to wipe data, didn't work. I flash my rom mi flash with keeping data, didn't work.
Now my phone boot up, I can see my files with random names.
Why I didn't backup to computer? Because I was lazy.
My big question;
Can I recover my files (~70 gb), I know my old password.
It's a good thing your data wasn't important then, if it was you would have a backup stored on a PC or cloud. First rule of flashing, have a backup. You can't recover it's gone, format data In twrp to remove encryption and wipe your internal storage then flash your rom.

Yes, it isn't too much important but I'm a little sad. I just lost few whatsapp message.
I will delete everything now. After that, I will disable this encryption.
Thanks
P.S: Whoever read this don't be lazy like me
