Pixel 5 Help - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Recently purchased from Google Pixel 5 unlocked updated to Android 11.
Endeavoring to root it following the excellent Homeboy76 instructions.
Using the correct sized cable does not and will not usb tether to my windows 11 computer especially when debugging is selected. However, it does connect and is recognized by windows when file transfer /Android auto is selected on the phone's options. So Far so good?
However further along the root instructions, it is necessary to disconnect the cable enter the phone's sub-menus by the power +volume up down buttons then re-connect the USB cable and verify by a Powershell cmd .
Root instructions specify that USB debug has to be selected on the phone.
Obviously, I am doing something wrong as the computer USB connection following accessing the phones secondary menu disconnects and does not show on Windows devices.
There are well-documented reports on the internet concerning the pixel 5 USB connection issues alas none of them solve my problem.
All helpful suggestions are welcome.
Thank You
Roy Shorter

XDA to act as modem

hey guys,
I have got the XDA Stella (also known as Kaiser) and i herd you can make this phone act as a modem. basically i got an archos (media tablet with internet) which i want to be able to use the internet on my archos through the phone. only problem is i have no idea how to do this or what to get?? can anyone advise please. it would be through wireless or i can do through USB, but was wondering how to do it.
thanks in advance
Shane
Your trying to use your phone as a computer modem right.
If so what you do is this. link computer to phone via usb.
mine then ask me if i want to internet share i click that then click done. if you dont get that option try going to start/programs/connections/internet sharing
that should do what you need.

Erm he wants to share the connection with an Archos, not with a PC. That won't work.
To the OP: USB most likely won't work, as the Archos certainly won't recognise the Kaiser. On the PC it requires Activesync and its drivers to be installed to work. We never know, you can try running internet sharing onto USB and plug it into the Archos, and see...
Otherwise you'd have to use WMWifiRouter or the manual hack to share the connection over Wifi. Beware that sucks battery down like hell on the Kaiser, don't expect more than 2 hours on a full battery.
Whats the Wifirouter you mean just on a normal computer or is it software to buy for the kaiser, and the manual hack am i likely to get caught by my service provider??
there is a option to adhoc to a computer, i was wondering if there is a way to change that to the archos?
also whats the manual hack or where can i find it??
Hey man all you have to do is use search, this topic has been discussed for at least a year now..
wmWiFirouter is a program that turns your phone into a wifi access point. Again, search has all of that info for you plus tons of other great knowledge.

[Q] Screen half-dead - can't enter PIN to unlock!

Hi everyone
I've tried a search but couldn't find anything specific on this, please forgive me if this has already been covered.
I have an HTC One where the lower section of screen is dead. This means that I can't enter either 0 or return on the PIN screen, which I need to in order to get the data off.
I am not prepared to try a hardware replacement, I am looking for software only right now.
I have rooted phones before (My HTC Desire, Wildfire, Desire Z, etc) so I understand the basic set up with ADB etc - I also have Linux Mint running on my box if needed.
Is there any way I can enter the pin using a USB connection - I know what the PIN is, obviously. Otherwise I guess I'll need to hack round the unlock screen, but I'm not sure how to go about that.
All guidance greatly appreciated! :fingers-crossed:

Maybe with a usb-otg calbe and a usb keyboard? Never tried....
If you already have a custom recovery installed you can access your data using ADB.

Yes you can even use a mouse with a usb-otg adapter
Thanks everyone - I had no idea such cables existed! I've ordered one and will report in with my results. Thanks!
Hi all, thanks for the advice. For anyone in the future looking at this, the UBS-OTG cable worked like a dream - just with a normal USB mouse and keyboard I could get it all fixed. Thank you, I didn't know such things existed before!

Trusted Device won't connect

I'm using the Moto PowerPack. It's been working fine, but since updating to 6.0 my phone cannot see the device to connect. I've tried to connect via the security settings/smartlock and the Moto Connect app.
It still recognized my car BT as a trusted device after the update.
Any trouble-shooting advice?
well, you are going to be better off asking your question where questions are supposed to be asked, so that people see that you need help, but genetal is the wrong section to get help in. ask a mod to move your thread to the q&a section http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/attention-questions-t3228454

Need help, Tab S2, Data recovery, Broken LCD and Digitizer

Hi All,
I have samsung tab s2 sm-t719y with broken screen and lcd. I just want to extract some important data out of it. Tried several data recovery software but usb debugging is not turned on. I tried this adapter (below) but it does not work with the Tab S2. I am helping my sis-in-law and all her biz contacts and project info is inside the tablet.
When I connect a usb otg and used a mouse and slide the mouse when holding the left button of mouse, I hear an 'unlocking' sound and I am able to adjust the volume by using the volume adjust button. So I am certain that the tablet is working. I have briefly searched for solutions in this forum but to no avail. Please help, thanks for reading this post.

I wasn't able to use Kies nor Smart Switch unfortunately. Kies immediately directed me to Smart Switch due to newer models of the Tab S2 model. Regardless, I entered the model name or model number (Galaxy Tab S2 or SM-T719Y or SM-T719) both software keeps asking me to check model number and enter it in the box. I followed the guide but unfortunately the software spat back saying USB data transfer is not allowed on the device so the software couldn't connect successfully to the tablet. **sigh** I appreciate the suggestion though. Im hoping someone could suggest another possible solution.
Thanks

You could try this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395
or use TWRP to recover the data. Look at the screenshots on the page to guess where you need to touch. You can then use MTP or ADB to backup the data.

Question Appears in Explorer as "Windows MTP Device" rather than "Pixel 7"

My Pixel 7 appears in windows explorer as "MTP USB Device". I can access it, but would prefer it be identified as Pixel 7 and wonder if this is indicitave of any issue. Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have thoughts on how to address this? EDIT: I chatted with Google. They had me try many things I had already tried, then asked me to try to rename the device on the PC, which I worried might just hide some underlying problem, but it did at least eliminate the symptom.
This is normal. The Android MTP interface is generic, unlike the drivers needed for ADB in bootloader mode.

I'm not alarmed, but my OnePlus shows up as "OnePlus A6003", and my Pixel 6 as "Pixel 6". Why would the Pixel 7 show up as "MTB USB Device"? Is that how it shows up for others here?

For me and two different Windows computers, Pixel 7 shows up as an icon same as Pixel 6 did. If you haven't seen it already, maybe something in this thread has a clue to offer.

The thread you linked regards connection functionality, with which I have not experienced an issue, rather than the issue I have, which as far as I've been able to discover so far is only the naming convention. This is a bit of a concern as I evaluate whether this phone passes inspection before sending my Pixel 6 trade. If there is this, there could be more significant issues I simply haven't come across. Strangely, if I turn USB debugging on, it shows up as "Pixel 7", but when I switch debugging off, it goes back to "Windows MTP Device". With my other devices, USB debugging status doesn't affect the name. Out of the box I immediately performed two successive available updates, so this isn't related to any missing available fix.
