[Q] Screen half-dead - can't enter PIN to unlock! - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
I've tried a search but couldn't find anything specific on this, please forgive me if this has already been covered.
I have an HTC One where the lower section of screen is dead. This means that I can't enter either 0 or return on the PIN screen, which I need to in order to get the data off.
I am not prepared to try a hardware replacement, I am looking for software only right now.
I have rooted phones before (My HTC Desire, Wildfire, Desire Z, etc) so I understand the basic set up with ADB etc - I also have Linux Mint running on my box if needed.
Is there any way I can enter the pin using a USB connection - I know what the PIN is, obviously. Otherwise I guess I'll need to hack round the unlock screen, but I'm not sure how to go about that.
All guidance greatly appreciated! :fingers-crossed:

Maybe with a usb-otg calbe and a usb keyboard? Never tried....
If you already have a custom recovery installed you can access your data using ADB.

Yes you can even use a mouse with a usb-otg adapter

Thanks everyone - I had no idea such cables existed! I've ordered one and will report in with my results. Thanks!

Hi all, thanks for the advice. For anyone in the future looking at this, the UBS-OTG cable worked like a dream - just with a normal USB mouse and keyboard I could get it all fixed. Thank you, I didn't know such things existed before!

[Q] Endless QPST frustration, native tether

Hello geniuses. I almost never post on XDA because I do my best to search, read, try/fail instead of asking questions but now I have one and can't find the answer- hope someone can help.
I'm trying to SIMPLY change the tethered nai address on my brother's (bored visiting the family) motorola droid (unrooted, stock AFAIK) to get his native tethering to work. I've done this multiple times before on my htc (wm6.1, 6.5, androided touch) and new Fascinate phone but his is a complete PITA.
His stats are: androud 2.2.1, baseband c_01.43.01.P kernal 2.6.32.0-g68eeef5 android [email protected]#1
Thus far, I have installed the moto usb drivers, and installed HW virtual serial port to interface with QPST (192.168.16.2, port 11008) . I can read/ write to the phone without problem EXCEPT it keeps reverting the tethered nai to [phone#]@dun.vzw3g.com. Even when I add a whole new profile, the new profile changes to add the @dun, regardless of whether it is an active profile. At first, I thought it wasn't writing at all but then finally thought to try adding a new one and it writes everything correctly EXCEPT adds the @dun to the tethered nai address.
SO, what gives? Is motorola more tightly locked down then everything else I've played with?
I'm having the exact same issue that you are having. I have no idea what could be causing it. Some friend told me to try to find the file that actually stores this data, pull it out (using adb) edit it in notepad or something and then push it back.
It actually makes sense but...if it's possible, which file could this be!?
Let's see if someone replies with a solution. In the meantime i'll keep investigating.
Dumb question, but are you guys putting the phone in diag mode (power off, hold 'T', and plug in the USB cable: the phone shouldn't acknowledge the USB cable)?

[Q] N7000 destroyed, data recovery?

Hi guys
as you can see in the attached file, i have a litte issue
a friend of mine dropped the phone and a car runned over it lol...digitizer and lcd are gone but the phone still boot up and it is recognized by the computer. My friend don't care about repairs but he wants the data back and here starts the problems:
-adb is off
-phone is password protected (so no kies and no sdcard reading from pc), phone stay in the "insert password" at startup.
-i don't even know if support mhl to attach on a tv
how can i recover the data? The only idea i have is to dump the rom and load it on an android emulator but i don't even know if its possible. Can someone give me a hint to recover the data? Thank you
1) Buy a replacement screen
2) Get the data
3) Sell fully working phone
...
Profit!
that was my idea...my friend do not approve

Did you try the S-pen to input the password?
i can't get a precise feedback. I think i'm not pressing the correct numbers and after half hour of wasting time i was looking for other options. Does this phone support mhl? If yes, i have to enable in settings or something else?

I dont know qbout mhl, never used it. The phone does support it though.
Another idea might be a usb-otg cable and a keyboard(password entry).
Not sure if that works on a stock rom, but try it.

Display not working after phone dropped, can I get an adb and/or VNC connection?

So today I dropped my one mini 2 and now the screen stays black. It is still booting fine though.
I was wondering if there's a way to get a VNC-connection to the phone, so I can still "use it" until I fix the display or get a new phone. However, USB debugging is not enabled, so I can't access the device via adb.
I was able to remotely install droid VNC server via play.google.com, but it probably needs configuration that I can't do without a working display.
The phone is currently running [ROM]NostromoPop 2.2.2 (21/12/15)[CM12.1][5.1.1] and TWRP 2.8.5.0.
I am able to boot into the bootloader by hardware key combinations and can access the device with fastboot.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

1- if nothing broken, send to HTC (say its just stop working) they'll fix it for free.
2-open and check cable connection, there's loads so there's a change its a loose one

I guess there's a reason for them to have records of which devices bootloader has been unlocked.. Do they still fix it for free?

Should I try that before sendining to HTC, or will I break warranty seals and loose any hope of getting it fixed by HTC?

look if you open it they will know for sure.
i sent my phone twice...and they repair it for free.
1 for software reinstall
1 for replace charging port ( i just receive it)
there's always a chance they will charge but if too expensive, you can refuse and pay the return postage. That's how it works in UK anyway.

Need help, Tab S2, Data recovery, Broken LCD and Digitizer

Hi All,
I have samsung tab s2 sm-t719y with broken screen and lcd. I just want to extract some important data out of it. Tried several data recovery software but usb debugging is not turned on. I tried this adapter (below) but it does not work with the Tab S2. I am helping my sis-in-law and all her biz contacts and project info is inside the tablet.
When I connect a usb otg and used a mouse and slide the mouse when holding the left button of mouse, I hear an 'unlocking' sound and I am able to adjust the volume by using the volume adjust button. So I am certain that the tablet is working. I have briefly searched for solutions in this forum but to no avail. Please help, thanks for reading this post.

I wasn't able to use Kies nor Smart Switch unfortunately. Kies immediately directed me to Smart Switch due to newer models of the Tab S2 model. Regardless, I entered the model name or model number (Galaxy Tab S2 or SM-T719Y or SM-T719) both software keeps asking me to check model number and enter it in the box. I followed the guide but unfortunately the software spat back saying USB data transfer is not allowed on the device so the software couldn't connect successfully to the tablet. **sigh** I appreciate the suggestion though. Im hoping someone could suggest another possible solution.
Thanks

You could try this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395
or use TWRP to recover the data. Look at the screenshots on the page to guess where you need to touch. You can then use MTP or ADB to backup the data.

Screen broken, what options available to backup phone

Unfortunately i dropped phone today and screen broken. It is so bad that I cant see anything on phone but phone is working since i can receive phone using headset.

Screen Broken - Cant Use - How do I export data?
What an amazing mobile the ROG 2 is.
No complaints really. Though I did drop it and the screen is broken so I am sending it off for a repair (if possible).
I cant use the screen at all, and they told me that the data needs to be wiped before its sent (or they will wipe it anyway).
Any idea how to get data off it, like contacts etc without using the screen?
Thank you all.
Your contacts should sync to your Google account. Go to contacts.google.com to verify they have already synced.

Thank you for the reply. What about messages, whatsapp etc
Is there any known software without using the screen?
Use an otg dongle and connect a mouse to the phone, you should be able to click like touch.

I think I am right in assuming that i need to give permission on my ROG to allow screen mirroring on a monitor. But of course I cant do that as I dont have access to the screen.
Am I right or is there a workaround?
Thanks

If you have allowed adb before, you can use adb pull command to copy files to a computer.
Changing the screen wont require data reset, I dont know why they are insisting on wiping the data!
you can also try this and see if it works: connect the phone to a pc and when the phone asks for permission, have a mouse connected to the phone and click the place that the allow button is most probably is.(it's on bottom right corner about a centimeter up and left) if you're set to English that is.
but you have to be able to unlock the screen before that somehow. maybe the fingerprint still works?
And my last option would be to get the screen replacement yourself and do it yourself if the data really matters to you. getting the broken screen off the phone shouldnt be much of problem because it's already broken so what could go wrong right?
and you will just have to apply the new screen with care and proper glue that you can get from a phone shop.
Sure you have fixed by now but incase or if anyone else lands here, You can use USB C TO HDMI (Cable, dongle, etc) and hook it to computer screen,TV. I had adapter and hooked a mouse to navigate. Though very poorly, I could still use touch screen
