I don't know what caused this.
I got my G1 today. It worked for probably 2-3 hours perfectly fine.
I had an app freeze (either Barcode Scanner or Lock 2.0) and had to do a full hard reset.
Now, whenever the phones screen darkens or I put it to sleep manually, it WILL NOT come back up.
I have factory reset three times now to try and get this to work.
When the screen is black, all buttons on the phone still light up and so does the LED indicator up top. I had my phone set to use a locking pattern screen at one point during one reset to test out and when the screen went black, I was still able to try and log in by doing my pattern. It unlocked, but still showed nothing on the screen.
Please help!
I've tried:
Turning Wi-Fi off
Turning 3g Off
Disclaimer: Yes, I've searched. I can find other users with the same problem but none of them seem to have a solution.
Phone is NOT ROOTED and has the factory ROM.
Update 1: Update: It only freezes/blacks out when I try to wake the phone from one of the front key buttons.
If I'm sliding to unlock, it seems to be fine.... (but if I've already tried to open from the front it doesnt)
Update 2: If I mash all the buttons in random orders for about a minute or two it seems to come back. Anyone have any idea?
Update 3: I'm thinking this has to be an issue with none of the buttons waking the phone up when closed. If I lock the phone with the "END" key, and then click the front "END" Key again, nothing happens. If I slide the phone open, and click it twice - the phone wakes up.
Update 4: Confirmed update 3. Phone will not unlock via front keys unless it's slid open (or open enough to trigger).
I would really, really appreciate help with this.
Hate to bump this, but I've added some detail on the top and bottom. Have to leave for work, hopefully someone might have an idea by the time I get back.
Well you can try to reload the factory rom or root it and try a custom rom and see if the problem still exist. If it is still happening then it would be a hardware problem and need to be sent in. And yes you will still be covered under warranty with HTC since the phone is still less than a year old.
I had a problem with exactly the same symptoms. It turned out that the SD card was cocked-up so home, core, and some other process would hang trying to read it and the phone would not wake-up the screen any more.
Did you try removing the SD card and seeing if that helps?

Removed the SD card and rebooted the phone.
No change ( still acts the same way ).
Did you factory reset after or was it an instant change?
I don't mind losing data to fix this.

Wouldn't I have to root to reload the factory rom? Is there a rooting tutorial based just on that?

If you use the official update you don't have to have root. There are some links on here. I'll see if I can find it for you.
https://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-gfh-CRB43-from-CRB21.c88b03d2.zip
That should be it, but can't confirm since I'm on my work computer.
Some thoughts--may be useful, or not:
Mine was doing that too, but it was caused because I dunked mine underwater during an urban exploring mission. I dried it out, replaced the LCD screen, and everything worked until it would go to sleep. Then I had to do a variety of button mashes and opening the keyboard to get it to come back to life. Sometimes it just wouldn't come back. The problem grew worse over time.
If wiping and reflashing (no need to use a stock ROM) gets you nowhere, then I would suspect a deeper hardware issue. I see you bought it used, can you contact the seller?
If you want to check for water damage, take out the battery and look at the tiny circular sticker in the battery chamber--if it is not white, it has been water damaged. (And the warranty will not be honored.)
Other Lesson: No urban exploring with G1s.
The link didn't work, btw.

Zero water damage.
That's great news zeabrid! In that case, I agree with an earlier poster--you should be covered by warranty. Wipe and flash a good rooted rom, and if that doesn't work, revert to stock and demand a new phone.

Do you have a link to a guide that teaches how to do this (with the stock rom)? I can only see a few that're spread out.
I'm not entirely sure my phone can boot into safe mode/disk mode, so we'll see about that.
Another update: When I boot into safe mode, the same problem exists.
Edit: Just emailed HTC.
This can officially no longer be considered a software issue.
I just rooted and installed a standard ROM. Same issue.
It happens all the way at boot now, just realized this.
HTC emailed me back and told me to call them directly. Will do that tomorrow.
if I find a solution I'll post it immediately.
Alright, my phone is officially ****ed.
Restored back to the original rom.
New problem now: When I close the screen, the backlight goes out and doesn't come back on. (I can still barely see everything, but there's no light).
Calling HTC today.
Edit: Called T-Mo support. They suggested deleting programs to free up space (I only have 2 downloaded and to reset (already done)
=(
Edit2: Called and placed a RMA with HTC after talking to two of their customer support reps. Thankfully, they forwarded me up the support tier after only about a minute with each person when they realized I had already tried all other steps.
The RMA process was surprisingly easy. I have everything set up, and when I get paid (tomorrow) I'm going to ship the phone out. I was given an estimation of 7-10 business days for full repair and return shipping (which sounds great in my opinion - I've never sent anything in for warranty work before).
I'll update you guys once I hear from their repair team on whether or not I'm going to be covered under warranty (I told them that the phone was a gift to me), and if not what the cost is going to be. Like I said earlier in the thread, all water damage indicators are clear and I have unrooted my phone, so I should be covered hopefully.
Thanks to anyone who posted in this thread.

Yea it defitenly sounds like a hardware issue and needs to be fixed. Glad your getting it fixed and you'll be covered no problem.
Do you know if they charge return shipping if it's covered under warranty? I have to pay my own shipping there, and they had me put a credit card down on file in case I either bail when its already there or they need to charge for repair.

To be honest I don't know the answer but would like to say they would pay for it. But they would have to let you know of the charge before they apply a charge to a credit card.
wow its weird cause im just having a similiar issue now.. in landscape mode.. phone and back light work perfectly. but one i close the screen everything goes virtually blank, everything is running perfectly just the screen light wont turn on..
will try some of your previous methods.. hopefully it works on mine..=/
thanks, for the info zeabrid
Hello folks,
I just noticed that my camera app flash and flashlight app don't work. No matter what options are selected the LED wont come on
Is there anything should look into before I call them and assume its a hardware failure?
Thanks,
Pete

If you have the tools and are comfortable with it, remove the back and see if the ribbon cable for the flash is correctly installed. Otherwise, you'll need to do a warranty claim through Motorola. Regular white and black Xs you can get from the carrier, but I'm not a fan of refurbs, so I use the manufacturer's warranty at all times when available.
You could try a factory reset first just to be sure, but it sounds like its a hardware problem.
The flash seems like it is an easy thing to replace, some of the replacement backs available on ebay come with them too, so maybe get a wood or different color back for cheap at the same time if you are gonna do it yourself.
Good luck

I appreciate all the advice guys...I went ahead and called Moto Support, all they could do was have it sent for evaluation and possible repair since its still under warranty. I tried to offer a credit card as collateral for a new device but they wouldn't go for it...
Not really interested in doing it myself since its only 3 months old, never dropped or anything, very frustrating.
Does anyone have experience with Moto's turn around time ? This is my primary phone not sure how i am going to do this

Weird, my Moto X led flash isn't working either. I've had it only a couple weeks, and it worked fine initially, but now it's not. I also haven't dropped it or anything. I wonder if it is a common issue.
Very Weird, maybe some update screwed something up ?
Does anyone know if there is a way of enabling the LED without the use of the typical apps to verify if its working ?

Just as an update, I took my phone inside the dry sauna and the flash worked, perhaps the heat had something to do with it.. Definitely not a software issue now.
As soon as it cooled off the, the flash stopped working again.
I've filed a repair claim, let's see what happens now..

My Verizon DE XT1060 started having a flash issue about a month ago. First time it looked like it was barely flickering and giving off no real light with a flashlight app, and same for camera flash. It came back on after a few minutes. Second time a couple weeks ago it was off for a couple hours, and I started filling out a repair form online, but as I pressed on it a little bit, it came back on. I got on their customer support chat and told what was going on and the support person told me to factory reset if it happens again to see if its software or hardware. Last night it lost function again and was off all day today. I reset to stock recovery and unrooted and tried to relock (no success) but the LED flash remained useless. I got on tech support chat again and was told they'd replace it under warranty with a "like new" same device. I haven't completely set it up yet, but afterward I squeezed the light firmly with my hand and it came back on. Obviously a loose circuit or something. I don't know if i should get the replacement or keep it.
I eventually had mine taken care of by Motorola support and it took them several tries. My advice is to make it obvious that it is intermittent and to take pictures of its condition before shipping.
If it under warranty they should handle it but be prepared for the process....

Whenever I try to use the rear camera the display turns black while only showing the HUD. The HUD works fine, but the camera doesn't work at all. Nothing is blocking it either.
When switching camera modes (to manual mode for example), an error pops up saying that the "camera is not available"
IMPORTANT NOTE: The front facing camera is working perfectly fine.
Things I tried to do (aside from shipping it for repair):
1. Android repair via the PC companion software
2. Internal reset
3. Safe mode
4. Clearing cache files for the built-in camera app
5. Installing an alternative camera app (the built-in one was disabled)
6. downgrade and upgrade
7.change camera for new one (tested)
I had same situation with regular Z3. Someone brings it to service where I'm working and my first think was camera fault but changing camera didn't fix it. Near camera connection You can see some small capacitors, we call it filters. It looks like capacitors but it's soldered not only on opposite sides but 2 points on both sides. In regular Z3 there was 5 elements like this to change and after that camera starts working. I don't remember how exactly it's made in Z3c but it's really possible that it's the same issue and same way to fix it.
One more thing, if You can check one one more camera to exclude camera itself cause most issues like this are caused by faulty camera. I had many phones (most Z1 and Z1c) with this issue and changing camera always was the solution.
Good luck.
Same Here. Need help too.
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
I have three cameras and two z3c, I interchange camera and phone and always the same result
At this moment I don't have any Z3c to disassembly (except mu own but under warranty) to check where those capacitors are but if You could take a picture of camera connector on motherboard and near area I can mark which one should change.
@Chamelleon
Main camera not working
I have the same issue with my Z3 compact. The issue started happening on the 11th month of my one year warranty, I sent it for repair (14 business days y + shipping time back and forth). It came back with the same issue. Sent it back right away. After another three weeks without my phone, I got it back. Guess what? EXACT SAME ISSUE!
I called their support line explaining what happened, the guy told me that there is nothing they can do about it since my warranty expired. Of course they didn't have in consideration that I sent my phone before it expired and it took about seven weeks back and forth. There wasn't any sort of damage on my phone, was never dropped or damaged in any way, I never submerged it even if in theory, that would be ok. The report said "it has reviewed the functioning of the unit, unfortunately the defect is in the PCB so it is not able to undergo repairs to it."
The guy on the phone told me what he thought the report meant. It means there is damage on the main board(not caused by me) and the one year warranty manufacturer warranty department won't repair it. Maybe, if I had bought the 2 year "extended" warranty, they could do something about it. I asked if the issue is that my one year warranty was expired or if it is something that they just don't fix unless you get the "extended" warranty. He couldn't answer me and the only thing he said was "is there anything else I can help you with?"
From what I understood, there are two completely different departments, the one year manufacturer warranty that only cover some things. Not even sure what, because if it's broken screen, water damage or any physical abuse, they won't fix it. If it's a problem with the main board or PCB, they won't fix it either. It is a mystery to me what gets fixed in that department. The other department is the 2 year extended warranty. I'm not sure what they are willing to fix there, but from what they guy on the phone told me, it's more than the one year regular warranty.
Long story short, after two trips to FedEx, at least 8 hours total on phone calls, more than 7 weeks without my phone, I ended where I started. Sorry Sony, never again. Worst customer support I have ever experienced.
At this photo I can see only 4 of this capacitors and marked it, maybe it should be four or one I missed cause quality. Anyway regular Z3 has 5 like this and after changing all 5 camera start working again. You can desolder it from most Sony phones, I used capacitors from MK16 (Xperia Pro). So find some Sony board with capacitors like this and ask someone with good hot air solder station (if You don't have one) to change it.
Any news to this problem? I bought used Z3C with black rear camera problem because it was cheap. (Yes, the front facing camera is working perfectly fine). So far I have only tried software fixes and obviously they didn't help. I ordered new camera module from ebay and I'm now waiting for it. Has anyone tried soldering new capacitors if the new camera module doesn't help?
EDIT: Here is another thead with same problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help/rear-camera-hardware-detected-black-t3231509
As I said I've done it only in regular Z3 but If You gonna try give me some info is this solution is also working in Z3c case.

I'm still waiting for new camera module. If the new module is not working I will try soldering new capacitors. I will keep you up to date here .
Any news??
Completely forgot to post this, hope it help someone. I made the same thing with black camera on my Z3c. After I broke audio port in my Z3c and had to send it to warranty I took my gf phone, Z3c also. I restored my TWRP backup to her phone and all except camera was working. Camera was completely black but only main, front was OK. After that I was afraid that it's another hardware problem like Yours but after reflashing to stock problem gone. I repeated it few times to check if I'm right and I was. After flashing backup from another phone even without TA and Kernel backup there is a problem with camera.
So I was wrong saying it's only hardware problem. If anyone still has this issue and didn't reflashed his phone check it first.
@Chamelleon yes it's somehow a software problem (if we could say that ). For me i did fix it.
I did a Nandroid backup for my black Z3 compact (camera works properly) an restored it on my new White Z3 compact (also camera woks fine). after restoring the white z3c rear camera shows black screen, the front one is good.
=> i did a format factory reset : didn't work.
=> flashed a TFT file : didn't work.
=> flashed a D5803_23.4.A.1.232_Customized FR.ftf : IT WORKS !
and then i remembered that my phone was from "SFR" , a french network provider.
i hope this helps also
Edit: too new account, would be nice if a mod unlocks the posting of the direct image links and fixes the links - I think they are useful as this is a common problem and i already invested hours translating russian and documenting my research nobody else should have to do it
for me it was a hardware problem after dropping it.. I even changed the camera module.
Did some reseach, russian sites have some input:
Layout1: directupload.net/file/d/4472/9andayji_jpg.htm
Layout2: directupload.net/file/d/4472/vzvgbqqo_jpg.htm
It was loose, but when i tried to push it down with a hot metal to "solder" it, at some point it jumped away and was lost because it is so tiny!
Missing part: directupload.net/file/d/4472/qmut35qt_jpg.htm
The russian site suggest this soldering of bridges, however its not clear to me if they mean one of this electronic pieces (4pins each) or also the lower one.
Russian: directupload.net/file/d/4472/ag43kmda_jpg.htm
The question is now how these (likely) filters (because so close to the camera have to be bridges, it seemed to have worked for some russians:
Pins: directupload.net/file/d/4472/k86j53hr_png.htm
Not sure if there are 4 indipendend pins or if for those small footprints of electronic devices they use only the edges and then they have the same signal.
I was not able to see any text written on those two things, however i didnt have any magnifying glass.

So I changed my camera because I thought it was a hardware failure (tried every other method before: going back to stock, wiping camera files etc.) and it STILL is black. Did you have any success with your camera?

Me not (also changed the HW cam), the guys on the russian site yes (even with other similar sony).
Just check if there is something loose, maybe you are lucky and its a software problem *fingers crossed*. To me it happend exactly after dropping (and changing the screen which went without problems) so I was quite sure its HW based.

Hi basmok,
First off thanks for the research and for the pictures!
I have a similar story, phone was dropped, rear camera won't work, tried different ROMs without any luck then took phone apart and saw that one of the four tiny capacitors
just fell off and now it's MIA...
The last pic from your post (directupload.net/file/d/4472/k86j53hr_png.htm) which I assume shows the soldering of the bridge doesn't seem to work...
Do you still have that pic?
Also did you make any progress on the camera fix or gave up?
Thanks,
Ati

You were lucky, they were already in the recycle bin and deleted on the camera. Best I could do picturewise, i dont have a macro lens. Here we go, added all to imgurl so hopefully they survive longer: http://imgur.com/a/Of1DY
And no, didnt make any progress as i dont know what component they are. Normally all components have lasered some code but not sure if its just too tiny for my eyes or if they dont have it. I was a bit unlucky as i didnt have a soldering tool, so i tried it by pushing the pin down with a paperclip which i headed with a lighter --- well it jumped away and was not the best approach
Hey there!
Recently I bought a Pixel 4 XL and I am loving it. However when it arrived, the 2X camera wouldn't work, and portrait mode neither. Luckily after disabling an app to get my SIM working on this AT&T Pixel, the 2X camera started working back. The problem is that today it stopped working again, and repeating the process of disabling the app didn't solve any problem. I know for sure the camera isn't broken as I took photos with it recently and I want to know how to get this working again.
Thanks in advance
I would force stop camera and gallery and wipe data on those two as well and reboot and see if anything was different. If not I would remove my accounts from the phone then factory reset.. Delete everything and maybe even do it two times just for the hell of it. I would use stock recovery and do this selecting "factory reset" with volumes keys and power button then reboot system afterwards. If nothing changed I'd sell it and I'd be honest online and explain my story and all. I'd pay the difference on a Google factory unlocked model Coral so that when I had any issues down the road I would be bootloader unlocked and I could then fastbood stock images and everything would be fine and dandy. I would also blast whoever sold me the AT&T 4XL that had a carrier encrypted bootloader lock on it on all social media networks, Ebay, Amazon and Swappa. Maybe then pee in a large bottle, like a 2 liter empty bottle and pop the top back on and keep going until it's full capacity screwing the lid on afterwards every time and leaving it some place where it could get maxium sunlight and decent heat like in a field by my house outside. Then I'd investigate them and try and find out anything and everything about them. All y'all need is a name and head over to Facebook and start searching and reading... When MY 2 LITER bottle wasfull I would GPS their address at some odd hour and try and figure out what vehicle belongs to them.. You could run vin and or license plates to see and make sure you have the correct vehicle. You definitely don't want to do this to an innocent person. Then once iz sure I had the proper vehicle I would dump the entire urine bottle in their vent where the defrost is, on outside of their front window where the dashboard is and walk away tossing the 2 liter either in the dumpster nearby or possibly in a trash bag and in a fire once I got home.
I had this done to me once by some punk neighbor in sone apartments I stayed in about twenty yrs ago and me and my gf had to sell her new high dollar sports car because regardless of what we did to do to eliminate the odor it didn't work. It was a goner, a TOTAL LOSS!!! Smelled like a truck stop urinal in the middle of nowhere that hasn't been cleaned in twenty years. I'm totally kidding. I wouldn't do this. Not at age 42. Now back in my teens and or twenties, idk, but not now. I would make sure it was known best I could. Write a few reviews on seller online. Shoot me the address I'll write one up for him to help you out.
While I'm not going to do such craziness this would be sufficient revenge I believe for selling me a carrier locked fairly new expensive Pixel and not telling me. The ole urine in the vent ruin the car maneuver. A one time thing that would cover almost anything anyone did wrong to you in about a minutes time max. Hopefully this made you laugh op and also anyone else who may read it. That is why I'm commenting it. Please don't ban me mods. Again I'm totally kidding. I'm too old for things like this now. Haha!!!I'd sure write reviews about him though online. Hook him up with some fantastic reviews from serval made up characters about how he lied and did this to me.
Hey,
fisrt sorry for tanking so long to answer. I did that but nothing. Sometimes both rear cameras stopp working and the only fix is factory reset, which only brings back the main camera, telephoto still doesn't work.
Yeah it wasn't great that he sold me a locked bootloader, but I mean I can live that and I pay really cheap, 170$ and phone is in perfect shape. Here in Europe the same phone is well over 350$, so I wasn't going to pay all that much for a 2 year old phone. Also I am researching a way to unlock it and I am confident. When I succed I may post a guide here on how to unlock.
However the seller was very kind, when I talk to him about the camera not working, as I know how to fix phones, I said to him if he could refound about 14$ to buy a new camera module. And surely after 5 minutes he refound 15$ to me, so I bought a new camera module and waiting for it to arrive.
Also very funny the history lol .
Hello all,
So I finally mange to find the issue.
As i didn't want to return the phone, I talk with the seller and he sent me 15$ to buy a new camera module and I would change them myself.
To open the phone is easy, at least for me. I saw a few videos online and followed the ifixit guide.
The funny part starts now, when I was going to disconnect the camera module(which have 2 conectors, 1 per camera) I found something interesting. One of the cables wasn't conected to the motherboard.
So when I connect it and test the phone, the camera started to work as it should.
I still don't know how this happened, the phone was never open before (I know because there is adhesive on some conectors, so if you remove them, when you glue them back they aren't perfect).
It would also be very strange for that to disconnect by it's own, because the cable is secure in place by a shield which don't allow the cable to move(or at least, that is what it should do).
Anyway, the problem now is fix. So if one of your cameras don't work, or work sometimes and them stop working, you should consider opening the phone and check the camera conector, It may have disconnected from the socket.
i got this problem too, portrait mode & zoom not working.

thanks for the reply, but I have been fixed it by disconnect the camera module and connect it again
My main camera recently became faulty. Image preview and photos were blurry as hell. Wide angle etc was unaffected. I thought it may be a software issue however hitting the phone temporarily fixed it... Until the next time I opened the app.
My network O2 in the UK have accepted this as a repair fault and are issuing me with a NEW device, not repairing mine and sending it back.
All I'll say is check your camera's...

You mean to tell us to hit our phones once or twice to see if an issue will appear? haha
Your camera was not well connected to the motherboard and that is why it was malfunctioning and hitting fixed it. That, or the cable connection within the camera was faulty.
Regardless, good that you got a new piece without any hassle. If it was out of warranty that would likely have been an easy fix by someone who has half a brain when it comes to repairs.

No sorry if it wasn't clear. Basically the auto focus is faulty.... Hitting the phone kind of knocks it or kicks it back into life.
I'm not the only one with the issue there's a few on Samsung's own forums with the same problem.
I'm hoping it was just a lose connection and my replacement will be all good when it arrives.
I have the same problem after the August security update. Thought that last update from few days ago will fix the issue. My problem is with the zoom. Everything more than x9.9 doesn't work anymore. Doesn't automatically focus. If i come down to 9.9 is clear. Everything more is blurry.
August update and camera is fine so I will not be hitting my phone to fix it
For me August update started the problem.
This post makes me laugh because I've had this problem since I first got my S21U lol. The only solution for me has been to take pictures in really bright environments if I'm trying to get results with high quality and better focus.
Hello,
I also have a problem with the camera. When I am in video mode, a lot of times my stabilization stop working and when I love my phone it is shaky. I assuming that I have a problem with EIS beacuse when I turn stabilization off in the setting it is quite better.
Does anybody have similar problem?
I am one the last update, but the problem was present before last update.

thats your camera's OIS thatts effed up, tthis happened to my otherphone oneplus 3 years ago, i eventually sold it off before it got worse, id say you should get the module replaced under warranty. its definitely a hardware issue,
Update on this... My network acknowledged this as faulty and I got a replacement device.
Camera is fine so far on this one on latest update. I don't believe it is software causing this as a factory reset didn't fix it. Got to be a hardware fault.
Does dropping the phone count ?
Yes I'd be inclined to agree it's hardware now after installing AUHB update. Op how did you get O2 to agree a new device wasn't the repair option available
Yeah I'm experiencing this. It's SUPER frustrating. Just doesn not focus
Stuck on the July update here in Aus (was hoping the aug up would fix it but doesn't sound like it here )
Yeah I thought that but it's unchanged in the last update. The 103 MP camera is shocking currently. The wide angle a bit better maybe but in all modes it's not great. As it's in warranty they can repair it. First phone I've had to send in for repair since my HTC one M7. Still if needs be
