I'm unsure if my problem has to do with Verizon or if I need to run a factory reset or try other options. Here's my story:
As soon as the phone arrived today, I unlocked, rooted, and flashed TWRP. No sim was in at any point since I didn't have a nano sim to use for it.
I tried cutting my Galaxy Nexus micro sim into a nano sim (apparently this works for some people), but the N6 states "no sim card - no service" so I don't think it worked.
Went to a Verizon store and got a nano sim for 28 cents, but the clerk couldn't activate it or bind it to my account since Verizon doesn't have the N6 IMEI numbers in their database. He told me to call support. Support was actually helpful, somewhat knowledgeable at least, and tried to activate the sim card over the phone.
Apparently the sim is pending activation from the phone, but I'm still getting the "no sim card - no service" errors. Does anyone know if this error means that it can't connect to the network, or if the phone thinks the sim is physically missing? There seems to be only one way to add the sim to the little tray as far as I can tell (gold face up, matched corner).
Has anyone else had similar issues? Should I try reverting (unroot/stock recovery/etc)? I'm not sure what the best approach is to activate the sim as I'm uncertain if the issue is still with Verizon or the N6.
EDIT: Everything is working now. For those of you moving from a phone with a micro sim, all you need to do is:
1. Cut the micro card down to the size of a nano
2. Drop it in your nexus6
3. Make sure wifi is off if you've already run through the setup. This was my mistake!
4. Give it a few minutes and you'll see the mobile icon flash LTE
It may help if you change your mobile network settings to LTE preferred.
Same thing happened to me. Did you try spinning the sim card around? The notched corner didn't look so much like a notch by the time I was done trimming...

Interesting. I trimmed off all the white plastic on the left and right sides so that I can rotate it or even flip it over. Going to try a few permutations... nothing yet. That's all it took eh?
That's all it took for me. Everything works. Data, voice, sms,mms... Everything.:good:

Still no dice. The gold face should be face up, right? I noticed that after a few minutes the error changes to "selected network unavailable", so maybe I'm putting it in right but now its just not being registered.
So far in my experience that message means you need to nuke and repave, including userdata.....YMMV
EDIT: Probably easier to get a new SIM from VZW, thats what I did

Thanks, I'll try a factory reset. I'm only running stock... can't imagine root or custom recovery would prevent the sim from being recognized. Perhaps when you click "skip" for the sim card part of the setup it can never be reconciled.
Factory reset didn't work either. Really irritating, it looks like the N6 that shipped from the play store came with android 5.0 instead of 5.0.0 or 5.0.1... possibly a development version from months ago?
I flashed the latest 5.0.1 factory images (boot, system, radio), then flashed TWRP, then did a factory reset to wipe data. At the setup prompt when I rebooted, it still says "insert sim card".
I'm not sure what else to try. If the sim card isn't activated I can't tell if that's why it wants me to insert a card, or if it physically thinks it is missing. I may need to order a nano sim to micro sim adapter, then put that in my old gnex and activate it that way, and finally move it over to the N6.
Does anyone have any other ideas or think I may have overlooked something?

All of the stock shipped with 5.0 so far. Not 5.0.0. 5.0.1 update notification "should" arrive after initial bootup
Contacts screen side up. It took a while to get onto the network initially. .#.#4636#.#. On the dialer opens a testing menu. There is a drop down menu, middle of the phone info page. Mine is set to lte/cdma auto
Thanks, never knew about hidden dialer apps. I set mine to the same. It's been a few hours and still no connection, so I'm going to assume the fact that the sim isn't activated is what's causing the phone to believe it's not inserted. I really need another phone to test with... if the sim card can be activated or work on another device, and still doesn't work in the N6, then it'd be a hardware problem.
Also good to know 5.0 is standard.
Update: I tried using the cut micro sim again, but this time turned wifi off. Looks like cutting the micro sim worked after all. I'm somewhat recognized by the network, but the sim used no longer maps to my account, so I'm getting a verizon webpage stating "device error" and to call customer support. I think if I can get verizon to revert changes made on my account yesterday back to the gnex with my old sim that this will work.
Moral of the story - cutting micro sim cards will work, but turn off wifi when trying to test your sim!
I'll report back once this is finally resolved. Hopefully this helps someone else.
Got it working - just had to get a new micro sim for my gnex, re-activate that device, then I was able to cut it down to nano size and load it into my nexus6. With wifi off this time, everything worked, and it connected to the network.
I've updated the original post with instructions for anyone else who might be having this problem.
I need to know the do's and don'ts with adding a non-Verizon branded Nexus 6 to the Verizon network. For example, I read that dialing *228 with Verizon will disable some features on the phone.
1. I purchased the Nexus 6 64gb through the Google Playstore and plan to activate it through Verizon. What are the do's and don't of getting the phone operational?
2. What are the do's and don't after getting the phone operational?
3. Screen burning looks to be a concern. Is there any screen break-in procedure to help prevent screen burning?
Are there any threads out there that have all of this information in one place? Similar to the rooting thread found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/how-to-nexus-6-one-beginners-guide-t2948481
Thanks in advance for the help.
I just stuck the sim card in and booted up. Next went to the Verizon site and activated Advanced Calling. Then did the following...
"In order to enable the setting on your phone, head into the dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#*. When you hit that last *, your phone will jump into the hidden settings menu. Choose “Phone info” and then scroll down until you see an option for “TURN ON VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG.” Tap that and then reboot your phone (I had to reboot twice for some reason to get it to work). Once booted, head into your phone’s regular settings menu, tap on “More” under “Wireless & networks,” then “Cellular networks.” You should now see an option for “Enhanced 4G LTE Mode” and it should be toggled on."
It was already provisioned evidently from activating on Verizon. It'll say TURN OFF if you're already provisioned. While I was in the "Cellular Networks" settings I changed Preferred Network Type from Global to LTE/CDMA. Then unlocked the bootloader, rooted with The Nexus Toolkit(because I'm getting lazy) and then flashed a 5.1 rom. You may (or not) want to leave your bootloader unlocked according to this thread. I don't know ,I haven't read the whole thing and wasn't planning on re-locking anyway.

Tag cause mine arrives tomorrow. Same deal.
I traded for an at&t n6 popped my Verizon Sim in and everythings been smooth, it was already rooted and boot loader unlocked, I've installed twrp. My question is, are there any Roms I shouldn't flash, or are all Roms for the n6 game?

*228 is not how you activate a 4G LTE phone on Verizon - that is only for 3G and basic phones.

Call Verizon and tell them you are buying a used Moto X for your line and get them to mail you a nano SIM card.
Then when you get the N6, call Verizon tech support and ask that they put your new N6's IMEI on the whitelist - they need to fill out a form to do that. Call back the next day and have them activate the SIM card they sent you in the N6.
If they can great, if not, then wait another day and see if the request to whitelist the IMEI goes through. If not, then you need to get an IMEI of a Verizon branded phone to get the SIM card active on your line.
What phone is on your line now?
Then after you get the N6 active on your line, you need to get HD voice active on the line.
Sweet, also, I had already activated advance calling on my note edge, will I have go back and reactivate it? I just went into the hidden menu and I don't see the "turn on volte

I called Verizon yesterday and told them that I needed a nano SIM for my Nexus 6. They over nighted one to me and I'll have it today. Was this a mistake? Do I need to call back and tell them I need one for the Moto X? And if not, does that mean I don't need to request the IMEI whitelist?
My Verizon Galaxy Nexus is the phone that's currently on my line.
I went to the Verizon store handed them my Google phone and they made it work. Maybe I was lucky I don't know.

That's fine. But it won't be active when you get it - you will still have to get it activated. You need to request that your N6 IMEI get on the whitelist - ask tech support to fill out the form and submit it.

OK, well that uses a micro SIM card so you can't use it to get the nano SIM activated. But hopefully they can get your N6 IMEI on the whitelist.

I have a question. So what happens if you would want to sell the S4? (Currently in that situation) will the person that buys it have trouble activating it?

I'd be curious to know this as well. Is it listed as a "Non VZW Device"? Or does it show as a Nexus 6? I called 2 different CS reps, and they all told me it is no problem to activate a device from Google Play Store. Same response from a corporate Verizon Store. Further more, I asked about the $25/month discount sticking and he says the discount is subject to your contract. Not your device on the plan. As long as your device is not on EDGE, and you're not on contract, you are entitled to the $25 monthly discount.
I purchased a sim cutter, and I'm jsut up in the air whether to get a 64GB from the playstore, or just buy from Verizon.

Yes, you are entitled to it, that is not the issue. The issue is that if the system shows a non-Verizon device on the line, the discount hasn't been sticking through to the next billing cycle and people have had to call to get it readded each month. YMMV.

The sim card is tied to your account so you wouldn't want to include it in a sale anyway. The buyer needs to pick up a new card and have it activated.
Thank you!...I just always remember putting in the IMIE on Verizon so I thought the device was tied to the account as well but thank you for the clarification.

Just get some scissors and cut your old sim down to fit. Really easy. You can download a guide to use. Why pay for an extra sim when the one you have will work just fine.

Verizon gives you SIM cards for free and lots of people mess up their SIM cards when they cut them down.
You only have to pay for a SIM card at a VAR.

^this. Verizon overnighted the card to me for free. I didn't want to risk cutting the old one and then being without a phone. It's a business phone, so I can't afford to go without it.

Good Morning Group,
I have VZW service. The Nexus 6 is from TMobile. In my infinite wisdom or rather the lack their off. I decided that I was over not having data while talking. I downloaded the VZW LMY47E image and followed the instructions found in the Nexus 6 general sticky roll up. How to flash factory images.
The short method did not work but the long method did. I rooted it and added TWRP recovery. Apart from that I left it stock.
I dialed *#*#4636#*#*. and turned off VOLTE provisioning flag. Then I checked for enhanced 4G under phone settings and it was enabled.
Awesome right....Wrong. I decided to test it. All calls immediately end after starting them flashing 00:00 time stamp. I decided to pull my sim and put it back into my S4 and dial *228 option 1 and I can make calls using my sim. Something must have went wrong.
What that is I have no clue.
I was thinking of flashing the 5.1 TMobile image but everything that I have read suggest that if you are on VZW you should use LMY47E.
As you can imagine not having phone service kicks rocks. I figured Id ask before flashing and or making anything else worse.
Thanks in advance.
*228 should never be done on an lte device.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to sort it out.
I decided to try reflashing the LMY47E image again. After doing so I was able to get 3G and make and receive calls. I went to VZW and they gave me bloody hell about getting a replacement sim.
Essentially they were not having it. They wanted to see the physical phone that the card would be activated in. I went back to my car and gave them my S4. To make a long story short they gave me a VZW sim for my S4. Got back home and cut the micro down to nano. I now have LTE service.
But I do not have VOLTE. I dialed *#*#4636#*#* and turned off VOLTE provisioning flag. I have enhanced 4g calling under phone options. But I can not browse a web page or talk on the on the phone while using GPS etc. Is VOLTE supposed to be turned on or off.
With it off I do not get the enhanced 4g calling options. With it on I do get enhanced 4g. Either way it doesn't work lol. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm just happy to be up and running again.
Thanks once again for your time and patience with my N6!!!!!!!!

Do you have advanced calling activated on your account? I don't believe that the S4 has advanced calling. You may have to put your sim card into a VZW device that requires it and then have them activate the feature.
Yea.... Did you ever activate the service on your account. You need to login in the website or call and turn the feature on. Dialing weird numbers and turning flags on in your phone won't do jack until the service is turned on within verizon.

i can pretty much say thats your problem. it isn't turned on by default so it needs to be turned on. no amount of flashing software or hitting buttons on your phone will help. I think you can even call the 611 number and when it gets to the voice prompts just say advanced calling one point zero. it should try to turn the feature on within that line.

The S4 had dual antennas so there was no need for the Advanced Calling feature. The Nexus only has a single antenna and requires Advanced Calling to be enabled on the account and the device in order for it to work.

Thanks for the number. The CS Rep said they can not make any change to the account because I dont have the password or pin.
Ironically one of the main reasons for getting a new phone was that my S4 wanted to power off randomly and it would be a chore just to get it to power back on and stay on. This time it would not turn at all so I was forced to call from my old thunderbolt.
I called the number you gave me while surfing the web on the phone. The CS Rep said that any 4G / LTE phone can use data over voice except for iphone due to their antenna construction. I guess its true I was just doing it.
But anyway it really shouldn't be a process just to get data while talking on the phone with the nexus.
The phone they have listed for my account is a S4. They said advanced calling and HD calling will be available for the S4 when they provide a software update. He had no clue to when the update would be released.
Just for Sh1t and giggles I inquired with the CS res in regards to purchasing a phone from google and using it. He said that I could go to a Verizon store and they would add it and give me a nano sim. I just thanked him for his time. I guess thats true right until you walk in their with it.
My nexus is from TMobile and from what I read people across various forums are having issues with getting their Nexus 6 added to their account regardless of where it came from.
Seems like verizon is really working hard to make the nexus 6 experience a pain in the ass. I dont need or want HD calling. Is asking to talk and look up something on the web or use gps to much to ask for....

He had no clue to when the update would be released.

no problem. you dont even need to speak with anyone in order to activate. some people reported just using the prompts, speaking with a machine it was able to turn it on. either way, good luck and glad you got some info.
I literally just got back from best buy with my unbranded unlocked nexus 6. they didnt have any "verizon versions". I will be cutting my sim card thats in my GS4 and throwing it into the nexus so i wont have to deal with verizon. i already had them send me a nano sim so just in case i have a backup. if i completely mess it up, ill go back to verizon and get a new sim for my GS4 and start over again

The S4 had dual antennas so there was no need for the Advanced Calling feature. The Nexus only has a single antenna and requires Advanced Calling to be enabled on the account and the device in order for it to work.

Thanks for the clarification. I did not know.
How should I go about this? I called and they said the phone that is listed is a S4. Currently advanced calling is not enabled for the S4. They said I would need to do a phone swap and or sim swap for a newer phone. If the phone is not listed on my account/ number what do I tell ask or tell them so they will enable it?

It works fresh out the box. Mine did and it was from TMobile. I didn't do factory resets or anything insert sim and load up my apps and enjoyed.
I used a sim card cutter that I got from Amazon. Cut it popped it in and everything was lovely. I didn't notice that I couldn't talk and use gps until i was actually driving. The sim cutter is a good investment because it comes with sim card adapters that will allow you to use your sim in any phone.
I wonder how the people got it activated using the prompts. Did they call from their nexus or their old verizon phone?
The only reason I decided to flash the LMY47E rom is to get data over voice. Hopefully I will get this sorted out sooner than later.
So I recently purchased a Verizon phone direct from the store and forgot that I needed to get the unlocked version. Long story short, I got a google unlocked phone and updated it over wifi to the latest firmware. I am not sure I want to unlock the bootloader and root just yet, but I would like to start using it. I also need to return the verizon one with in 14 days to get a refund. so my question is, once I put the verizon sim in the unlocked google phone, will the OEM Unlocking option get greyed out preventing me from rooting down the road if I choose? Right now it is obviously available and I can toggle it. TIA.
EDIT: I meant to put this in the Q&A Section, not sure how it got here. Sorry mods. Please move.

So my understanding is that you now have 2 phones, correct? One on Verizon that you will pay $35 restocking fee on and another Google version that is, naturally, unlocked. I have an unlocked Google version as well with a Verizon sim in it. If your oem switch is active now then there is nothing you can do that will deactivate it. You're safe and you can send back the VZW phone today.

That's great news!! Thank you. I was worried Verizon would be able to toggle it somehow and keep me from accessing it once the sim provisioned on the Google phone. For instance, WiFi HotSpot works on the google phone now, but I assume once I put the verizon sim in that will stop working.

That toggle disable is built into the device and not subject to sim or carrier. Just as enabling it is as well. But to your hotspot I'm just not sure how that works. I have hotspot on Verizon I guess because of the plan I'm on so I never thought about it. How does that work if you don't have the Google phone with a carrier yet? I'm kind of out of it when it comes to that since I only use it when the electricity goes out at home or I'm in a stupid hotel that charges for internet.

Yea, I'm not sure. On the Verizon phone with the sim card it in pops up with a notification that says to call my carrier to activate this feature. The Google phone let's me setup a hotspot and put in SSID info and password. I know it has something to do with build.prop, was just curious if that is something that will change once I pop in sim.

For anyone else curious, the OEM unlock toggle is still available after installing Verizon sim. In case it matters, I started the phone first time with no sim, connected to WiFi, updated to December firmware, added Google account, setup phone, updated apps, setup WiFi hotspot, then installed sim. After reboot, my wife could connect to my hotspot but could not get internet access. But OEM unlock is good to go with this method. So I'll have to root and do tethering I suppose.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm not surprised at any of it, however. This all has been known for some time. Glad you did the right thing for yourself.
Has anyone been able to get DSDS working on Google fi? Any help would be great.
I've been trying with limited success. My question to you is are you trying to use the esim and physical sim with the same Google Fi number? (This is my case)
Mine seems to use both sims when connected to Sprint and only one when connected to Tmobile....at least I'm assuming. Under settings-about phone-sim status it will show both connected when on sprint (I can tell which carrier via Signalcheck Pro app). But when connected to Tmobile only slot one is connected. It still does tend to prefer Sprint, although seems to switch faster than before

Was the dual sim automatically set up or did you do something to set it up? When I tried to set it up in the past I ended up having two different signal icons in the status bar and we should only have one according to Google support. The Google FI app is showing that I have two IMEI numbers but I only have the physical sim active.

I can't seem to find that. Can you post a link please?
edit: reading about "dual connect" but there isn't an accurate description of how it works, how to set it up, and even if it's live yet.
It has not rolled out to use Google Fi with both the e sim and SIM yet. There's a thread on the Product Forums. I've burned through two SIMs trying before looking it up.

That article is confusing at best and ridiculous when you actually figure out what they're trying to say. They don't know what they are doing.

I tried to set up esim first then insert physical sim as instructed by google fi help chat. I got the two signal icons too. Then I found https://support.google.com/fi/answer/7540641?hl=en and pulled the physical sim, wiped the esim and then inserted the physical again and activated. It was working then
edit...where in the fi app does it show imei numbers?

I don't think you can see that on the fi app. You would have to go to about phone and see it. Also, it will work with the physical sim. I tried that and it still stated that their is a free Sim slot.
