I have two OP's now, an 8T and 10 Pro, both on Android 12. While the 10 Pro came with 12, the 8T was just recently upgraded.
Neither of them will start Android Auto without me first unlocking the phone. This problem only started on the 8T after the 12 upgrade and then the minor update that followed.
I noticed when I unlock my phones the popup to specify what type of USB connection pops up, (charge only, file transfer, etc) - so wondering if this is part of the problem? I tried setting the default to file transfer which is the option for Android Auto, but I still have to unlock the phone every single time I connect to my car.
Did something change between 11 and 12 that would make this happen? Is this a bug?
Does anyone else have this issue, or a resolution idea?

Try disabling the screensaver on your phone. I had similar issues on my OnePlus 7Pro, though not on Android 12. After I disabled the screensaver, it connected fine.

Thanks but I'm not sure what you mean by screensaver? Oxygen OS, at least, doesn't have anything like that in settings. We have a "lock screen" but I need security on my phone so I can't disable that.
I did find a "trusted devices" section where your phone will remain unlocked when it detects things like a location or connected device. I added my car to this, but it still doesn't work. "Trusted Devices" still requires you to unlock phone once before it works properly once connected, just like my Android Auto is doing
I went into developer options and set the default USB configuration to charging/Android Auto. It still shows when you plug it in but my phone still works with the screen off. Also, check the settings in AA as there is one which you have to toggle for starting Android Auto when the phone is locked.

Does anyone have a method for completely disabling or removing Android Auto? Every time I plug my phone in to charge in my wife's truck, it pops up and I have to say "no." I don't have the app installed and the required software will never land on my phone (stripped down Lineage OS install). Is there a system app I can remove or setting I can change that will make it stop popping up?

There should a setting in the radio to disable Android Auto. In my Ford it is under Android Auto settings.
My wife uses it, so doing that would increase the number of steps that I have to take. (Would have to toggle off while I'm driving and remember to toggle back on when done so she doesn't get annoyed.) I'm trying to figure out how to disable it entirely or block the intent that signals it to start.

It shouldn't be starting should it? When I plug my sons phone in which doesn't have the AA app installed it doesn't start AA on head unit. When I plug my phone in it says something like AA device detected & AA on the head unit starts. So something must be wrong with trucks AA, I think, or maybe different car manufactures do things differently?
Are you sure you can't install app on your phone? If you could install the AA on your phone there is a rejected car list option, you can add your wife's truck there and it won't start… I guess (as I've never used that option)
Alternatively you could just use one of those cigarette lighter USB chargers… I have one of those as passengers are always running low on battery LOL.
Installing the app requires installing and enabling at least one other piece of software that is well known for being bad for privacy: Google. Putting that on my phone is a non starter for anything. It's worth trying to see if I can change that setting without having to install all the dependent software though.
Just wondering if you were able to solve this? I have the exact same issue. Crazy thing is that I had gotten rid fof the annoying Android Auto prompts but then the super helpful techs at Samsung screwed up my phone trying and failing to do something else. Now the prompts are back and I can't remember how I got rid of them in the first place.
what about a cable like this ? https://www.amazon.com/PortaPow-Micro-USB-Cable-Charging/dp/B0088HTYUE
Please help. I highly recommend nobody update Android phones! Android auto does not stop popping up and is extremely annoying. It doesn't work. And causes all kinds of delays and disrupt other applications that work fine. Anybody know how to get rid of the current Android auto that was updated today?

So you are saying Android Auto was installed on your phone by default & you can't uninstall it? If you can't uninstall AA you could "freeze it" with an app, Google "freeze bloatware" there are a number of ways of doing this (even without root) depending on android version
But first is Bluetooth auto start turned off? Have you added car to reject list in settings?
If that doesn't work you can activate developer options & set USB Configuration to "charge only", though that might stop USB working how you want when connecting to something else. Or use the charge only cable as mentioned above.
I have an issue with Android Auto refusing to start. I always get an error: "Something went wrong: Google services doesn't seem to be working at the moment" and the app closes.
Stock, locked, global ROM pie.
Any idea on how to get it working? Thank you!
Problem solved. You need to disable dual apps.
In my case it does not work at all... I connect the phone, start android auto (and it starts on the phonefine, no problems) but nothing happens on the car side. I don't have dual apps enabled. Tried with USB debugging on, but still nothing. Running latest MIUI 10.2.1.0. Anyone can help? With my previous umidigi phone it worked (most times). It's like neither can see the other connected...
So as the title says, I can't use the cast/screen mirroring feature in phone. I just cannnot connect to any tv
Whenever I try to cast, it doesn't show any devices at all. Null. and using the button from the notification dropdown, it just searches endlessly.
Some notes:
1. No problem with network. No problem with TV. Other phones work just fine, and doesn't take more than a minute to find device.
2. I tried not only on my TV but on other TV's as well with cast feature. My TV is Hisense smart 39", 39A5605.
3. Already did several restarts, disabled active apps (like adguard), still same.
4. My phone is using the latest PIE update (official update but sideloaded)
5. Already tried connecting on the same WiFi network. Still didn't work. Other devices can connect to the TV without the need to connect on the same wifi network.
6. Already tried turning both mobile data and wifi while scanning. still nothing.
7. Already tried disconnecting current wifi connection (set network to 'forget) but left wifi on while scanning. Still no device found.
8. Already tried installing some apps (like Google Home app and other cast app). Nothing.
9. Already went to developer options and turned on 'Wireless Display Certification', but no additional options show up on my cast screen (like listening mode etc). Just plain nothing.
10. There's no three-dot menu on the cast screen that will show 'enable wireless display.' just a search icon on the top right and nothing more.
I really wanted to find a solution, but can't find a specific fix. I hope somebody here will help. Please. Please I'm desparate.
By the way, I know some will say I should do a factory resetting, but please understand if I say no for now. Because if I do, I'll lose a lot of settings and configuration (system-level and app-level), among other hassle it may incur.
I am using Red Magic 3 (12GB version) with latest Global released rom, I own a Ford Ecosport 2019 model and Ford Sync does not detect my device to start Android Auto setup.
I have tried different cables, ports but there seems some issue with the phone itself as I am able to initiate it on other devices.
Has anyone encountered same? Is there a fix?
Will really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Sorry for late reply. My phone was gone for a month.
Enabling default to File transfer makes it visible on as a device on my car system. But does not start Android auto setup.
Some times it won't launch on my phone till I hot the Android auto icon on my car. It's a 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE. If I press the icon it just connects. Looks like it's more the Android auto app then the phone. You can try deleting the Android auto and all the settings redownload and set it up.
I have the same issue. Nubia's support has no response. My wife's android device simply connects, as do all of my other older android phones.
Does anyone have a solution for this? I highly doubt support will get back to me.

This was one of the first things I tried. In fact I tried running through all of the USB connection types. No go. I also contacted Nubia support. This did not end up anywhere fruitful.
Does Android Auto work for you?
Same issue with my 5S or my old 5g. Sync 3 doesn't detects android auto, but only on Ford, on Seat or Audi works nice.
Best regards
Try this
got to developer option and turn on USB debugging

I don't get a black screen at all, instead I get an error message about "no installed apps work with this usb accessory".

Just tried that didn't work same error. Even reinstalled to see. I know auto start if disabled can cause notification missed issues on other apps.

initially I have the same "no installed apps work with this usb accessory" as well, but all I do is opened up all the permission for android auto and other google services, and I got a black screen during connection.
What I notice is on CN version even if you allow it to auto-start, and the phone knows that(it pops a notice saying do you want to start android auto?) the android auto does not response to the start command it seems result in a black screen.
I'll try the permissions can you let me know which apps aside from Android Auto you flipped the permissions for? Let me try to get to the same spot as you.

I spent quite a lot of time on this. There's something broken on the Chinise firmware. I also got the pop up and then phone freezes. I tried beta 12.5.2 and still the same issues. I don't know if 12.5.3 fixed this, since I move to the global ROM - where Android Auto works just fine.
Also, I tried many many apk versions of Android Auto with the same luck...

I have encountered this in other phones like oneplus 8 pro CN version ROM, My guess is that all the CN ROM lacks a small crucial permission for android auto to start normally during the connection, but the thing is we don`t know what it is.
Well even without the Android Auto installed I get that USB message so I guess it didn't make a difference installed or not permission and what not. Something is just not registering with the phone.
What are the draw backs with a global rom and also does that enable smart lock? That is something else that seems to be missing from MIUI.

Android auto wont work on CN rom but on the EU rom it works just as you would expect, also wireless Auto works as well.

I am facing the same issue. Did you find a resolution for it?
don't forget to use original usb c cable (only one works with me)
I faced a bunch of issues too.
I had to do two things:
1) change my crappy USB-c cable
2) go to apps, manage apps, search for Android auto, then clear settings for Android auto: first cache and then all.
After I did that, I was greeted by the android auto setup and all work out!
Hope this helps!
Ps: I'm on 12.5.4 global
same issue with K30 Ultra China rom. i got this issue after upgrading to MIUI 12.5.4 from 12.0.20. every worked in last ROM but appeared right after i upgraded to 12.5.4. Has anyone fixed it?
Without the Android Auto installed I get that USB message so I guess it didn't make a difference installed or not permission and what not. If your phone is facing issues or slowing down because of Android Auto then you can disable Android auto. That is something else that seems to be missing from MIUI.
I'm getting this issue with my Mi 10 Ultra (Chinese version) MIUI 12.5.6.0
Any practical fix so far (without the need to flash any other rom)? This is really annoying!
If anyone finds this on google, clearing play services data solved the issue for me.

Switch on Hotspot on your phone, connect your car to your network and update the system/check for updates. Once updates are complete, you should be able to connect
