Had my S8 plus for about a month now. Every 2-3 days or so, the fingerprint sensor stops working just randomly. Will work perfectly, then just out of nowhere, doesn't respond to anything. Disabling fingerprint security and re-enabling doesn't fix it. Trying to go into applications- system apps- fingerprints, and trying to force close it won't work as it's grayed out. The only thing that works to get it working again is a restart. Not the end of the world I know, but having to restart it at the most inopportune times is kind of annoying. And paying this much for what amounts to the top of the line phone on the market right now, and having one the most important functions just stop working all the time is crap. And no I don't want to use the iris scanner, or pin, or pattern security. I want to use the fingerprint sensor.
Searches around the web indicate this is pretty common. Anyone else on the VZW S8 or plus having this issue? Anyone know if a fix is coming down the pipeline? I'm pretty sure this would be a software issue as it works 85% of the time and a simple restart gets it working again.

Some other threads on XDA have said that disabling fingerprint scanner gestures fixes it. I haven't ever used those and I have never had a problem with the sensor. It isn't as good as the sensor on my Moto Z Force Droid was, but it is pretty good.

Yeah, I disabled that last night. Waiting to see if that works or not. Just thought I would post in the Verizon specific forum to see if any other Verizon users are having this issue. Pretty sure it's a software issue, and am just curious about differences between the Verizon software and other carrier specific software.
Always had the gestures disabled and I have noticed this, but it always goes away with time for me. I thought it was just because I was sweaty at the gym, but it doesn't even know that I am attempting to use the scanner. Then, it happened outside the gym. Goes away in just a couple minutes, thought it was just me.
It seems that the fingerprint scanner is more reliable when the screen is off than it is when the lockscreen is on looking for iris scan.
Day 3 with my S10+ and after two days where the fingerprint sensor worked "reasonably well", today it refused to unlock, no matter in which angle, which one of my 3 registered fingers and no matter how much pressure (or almost no pressure) I applied. Only device restart solved the problem.
And yes, I have all the latest updates (at least the Day One that tmobile released...)
Is anyone else experiencing the same?

Mine is acting up as well. When I first got it, it worked great and now I can barely get it to unlock
Edit: forgot to say my wife is also having troubles with fingerprint as well

Same here. My Note 9 fingerprint reader was far superior. Has anyone tried removing the pre-installed screen protector? I wonder if it would help. I may try it and/or return the phone for a different model. Frustrating

Also, have you gotten the FP reader update yet? I know unlocked AT&T models got it last night. Definitely helps.
mine working fine stock screen protector all updates done. received @6 March and its exynos indian variant S10+ G975F

Working fine here. Have exynos version. It initially didn't work for one of my thumb. I deleted it and again register it using every angle. Its working fine after that. Maybe Samsung released it too early without testing much.

Received my galaxy s10 on March 6th. I was super excited but my excitement fizzled down after testing fingerprint scanner. That thing just would not work. It worked like 20 percent of the time. Some times I would try 5 times in a row and it would fall all the time. I had registered two thumbs twice but that didn't help. I went through a lot of threads on XDA and other forums and gathered all the suggestions. Figured out some of the things that worked for me.
Here is what you need to do to make it at least 80-90 percent reliable.
1. Upgrade to ASBA version of the firmware. I am not sure which region you are from but Samsung just released a firmware update which was about 440 MB. This should already help a ton.
2. After you upgrade, go to settings and search for "touch sensitivity". Go to the setting and turn it on. This will increase touch sensitivity of the display. It may use a bit more battery but I have not noticed any difference.
3. Now remove all your fingerprints. Click add finger. This time, when scanning finger do following.
A. Start with the middle of your thumb. Not the edge of the thumb. The part that is about half cm inside. Press that portion and don't do much of a sideway motion till you reach about 80 percent. Now use the edge of the thumb and try to move the edge a bit to reach 100 percent.
B. Add the same finger again. This time start with edge and try to get to 80 percent without much motion. Then use middle of thumb to reach 100 percent.
C. Do the same for other thumb. Also don't register your thumb in vertical position. Just register the way you would hold a phone and try to scan your thumb. Close to horizontal may be at 5-10 degree.
You may be required to press a bit hard while registering your finger but this is not needed to unlock the phone.
3. Now turn off the screen and try to unlock the device without turning on the screen. I know it is a bit hard. Just go with the feeling and press gently with middle of the thumb where you think the scanner is. Note that this is not capacitive scanner that you just touch and done. Put your thumb with a gentle press and leave it there for may be 1 second.
4. Screen should come on and phone should unlock. If it didn't work then turn off the screen and then tap it once to start always on display. This will show you the scanner on screen. Just gently press and hold for 1 second.
I have noticed that the scanner does not work when the finger is super dry. But I think after the update it has gotten better. I had initiated a return for this device and was planning to just get an iPhone. But after the upgrade I decided to keep it and trade in my galaxy note 8.
This is really worrying me. I don't want the gimmick / novelty instead of reliability
Mine is perfect. Installed the update and removed the screen protector it came with and fitted an aftermarket one my local phone shop sold. I get a failed attempt maybe 2 times a day because I haven't had my finger on the right spot
Initially I had the same issue , things I have done which resolved the issue
1 Most important, update the software version. Recent version has fingerprint issue fix.
2 Enable touch sensitivity from settings
3 Add same finger twice , i prefer to add my thumb finger in horizontal position same way you hold your phone
The only trick people miss out is they do not cover the entire sensor while unlocking...just a small adjustment and the fps is as fast and reliable as any in the market.
I initially had his problem trying with part of the sensor covered and i thought it was horrible.
Infact if you cover the sensor wholly you dont need the touch sensitivity turned on as well. I have it mine switched off.

Another tip that worked for me is...while registering the fingerprint, hold the phone as you would while you unlock the device and scan the same position of the finger with minimal movement until it flashes 80%.

I took that crappy screen protector off the second it came out of the box. Only had it 24 hours and it's working so far, but time will tell...
Fingerprint sensor gone
Hi, I'm new here
After I restore factory default of my S10, because it was consuming battery too fast, the fingerprint sensor stop work.
At the samsung's members app I did the interactive check of the sensor and said it is ok.
The phone and apps are update.
I try everything to restore the sensor but had no success. Does anybody knows what could be, and if it is a software problem and how to restore?
Thank you
Hi,
Using the Red Magic 3 is quite nice, but one of the major problems to me is the FingerPrint scanner.
It happens really often that I have to "press" the FP scanner several times before it lets me in
But on the other had, Face unlcok works superbly here !
It recognizes my face everytime, even in rather dark environment.
And unlocking is then super fast...
Guess I'll use that more often than the FP scanner
You guys also have that "problem" with the P scanner ?
No its working perfect for me, much better then the fp sensor of the xiaomi mi mix 2 (my prev phone). Meaby try to set it up again?
I had the same problem, then it went away, then it came back.
Saw some people complaining here as well on github.
Funny thing for me, seem to be related to having activated multiple users in this device and for some reason the finger print only works (normally) on this second account. Deleting that saving account did not solve the issue as the sensor continues completely irresponsive in my main account (so it's clearly just a software issue). If I recreate a second account it will work there, but still not in my main account.
Do you have more than one user registered for that device? I use the other users mainly to have alt accounts for different games
I'm in touch with their (slow) support and the last message I got was:
We will feedback this case to our R&D .Pls provide the order number and Build number of the phone. If you can, please also provide a video file of this process, thanks.
In my case it's clearly just a software issue, so it should be fixed in future builds (hopefully).
Perhaps a factory reset would help, but I don't want to test that option as I'm lazy to set up everything up again.
Hi,
Same thing here.
The FP scanner is not on par with some of the RM3 sibblings like the Mate 20x or the mi mix 3.
I think the scanner is too small to recognize your fingerprint decently.
But if I compare Face unlock on this device to face unlock on the afroementioned devices, it's a totally different story !!!
It is amazingly fast and reliable, even in low light conditions...
So I am almost always using that one.
Regards.
No problems here with the FP scanner.
I'm on Global ROM,bootloader is still locked,no root and only my account registered to the phone, but I've setup 4 fingerprints, and all of them work quite good....
My 4XL face unlock not work,
So I delete my face unlock and add new again.
But I can't setup. It show fit your face in the inner frame. I try my face to inner frame, not work.
Patch is July.
Help me please.
You are in root ?

I haven't root brother
Same here, face unlock suddenly stopped working a couple of hours ago, I deleted face data and tried setting it up again - receiving error message that face unlock enrollment didn't work
Is it fixed?
Facing this problem too.
Zero issues on my Pixel 4 or 4 XL. I've never had issues. Might be hardware

I have the Pixel 4 XL and it's been working fine until I had to get it replaced because of the 50% battery issue. The replacement phone the face lock setup doesn't work. I've loved the phone so far and was really considering getting the Pixel 6 when it comes out. But these two issues so close together have made me begin to question. I'll never buy another Samsung, so I guess that leaves Apple.
Mine just started doing this after a factory reset. It was driving me crazy. I was able to finally get it to work. Before it gets to the point of scanning your face there will be a place you can click on asking if you have trouble moving your head. Once you click that it will still say the same thing about fitting your face but you will not have to move your head around. Just keep moving your phone in and out and it will eventually take when it finds the sweet spot. I haven't had any issues using face unlock after setting it up.
Had the same problem and apparently it was because of my screen protector. If you have one on, try removing it and test
Solved this problem!
Bakstory: I have Pixel 4XL not locked on carrier's network. I was running Andorid 11 (build from Jun 2021) since the moment I've bought the phone and I have never updated it to the newest versions of Andorid till this days, cause I've read that many Pixel users expirenced problems after update (like not working wireless charging and problems with Face Unlock). Last few month I've noticed that Face Unlock recognized me with 50% chance, I've experinced it earlier and usually I was able to fix it by deletting the face and setting up Face Unlock once more. This time it did not work. I've deleted the face data and was not ale to set it up once more. It was saying "fit your face in inner frame", It was detecting my face, cause it was reacting when I was turning the head and it was sayin "turn your head less" or was reacting when I was moving away from phone by saying "move closer". I've also upgraded to Andoid 13 from push update and problem was not resolved.
Solution: I've rolled back to Andorid 10 (build QD1A.190821.011.C4, Oct 2019), before installing back up your files, cause during the process you will basically reset your phone to factory settings. And on Android 10 Face Unlocked works like charm! It succesfully set up and worked. After that I've upgarded to Android 13 from push update and Face Unlock still works! BUT, DO NOT TRY TO DELETE FACE DATA AFTER ANDROID UPDATE,IN MY CASE IT WOULD NOT SET UP BACK, I HAD TO ROLL BACK TO Andorid 10 TO SET UP FACE.
I had screen protector and the mentioned above problem is not because of it, because I was trying to set up Face Unlock without screen protector for 3 hours straight. I've even downloaded HedgeCam2 to check how Infrared Camera works with it and without it, no difference.
That's definetly software problem, not hardware, greetings to Google Developers
Sorry for grammar mistakes, English is not my primary language. I hope you understood me and I've managed to describe my problem and how I solved it.
After a few days with the Pixel 7, sadly, I decided to return it.
The biggest reason is the fingerprint reader just didn't work right. 3 out of 4 finger presses don't work. I don't know if it's just a faulty phone that I got, but I got tired of redoing the fingerprint scans.
I have Pixel 6 and the fingerprint reader works very reliably.
The Face Unlock works but I found a bug that if the face unlock is enabled, then for all of the 3rd party apps that use biometric login, the fingerprint unlock stops working and these apps don't support the face unlock.
I had a terrible time getting mine registered and working. I have dry fingers and after moisturizing a little, the enrollment went in one go and the fingerprint works as fast as any other phone.
I have no idea how I got it fixed but I was having the same issue as you. I disabled verity and verification to flash custom kernel (wiped phone after verity) and after that the FP reader is working with 100% accuracy. It was night and day for me.
The fingerprint reader seems to be worse on the Pixel 7 than it was on my Pixel 6. It's fast but has a much higher failure rate.
Has anyone seen a difference with the animation speeds changed in developer options?
My son has my old pixel 6 and the fingerprint reader is working great.
{Mod edit: Quoted post has been deleted}
I tried it in any way I could think of. Dry, wet, sanitized with alcohol, greasy, dirty, you name it. Did not work.

If I pay $600 for the phone and have to do ADB "contortions" to get the FP scanner to work, then I don't need the phone like that.
A "cheap" inlocked Chinese POCO phone with under screen FP reader works 100% of the time without disabling dm-verity.
Wow I find my Pixel 7 to be much better on the FP scanner than my P6 was, I even added a screen protector after enrolling my prints. I also now use the face unlock and have no issues with Apps that use the FP biometric option. This phone is way better than my P6.

Agree - I'm fairly familiar with Xiaomi phones and their FP readers are pretty reliable. I'm surprised how poorly my Pixel 7's reader is. In this day and age, we shouldn't have to compromise on what's supposed to be a stable technology after paying $600.
I do notice something interesting though - the failure rate is very high when I try to unlock it after a little while (a little while being >15m). But, if I fail and enter my passcode, every subsequent try is super fast. It's almost as if the phone realizes it's not doing a good job a the initial recognition, adjusts its stored FP data, and then gets better for a while. Anyone else notice this?

Really? I have not had that problem - any conflict between face unline and Finger for Biometric apps. Face unlock is outstanding. Fingerprint reader is meh, ok, sometimes

I have noticed that same thing on my 7 Pro although for me it's more like an hour+ where it gets bad... It will be fine all day then I set my phone down for awhile, pick it up later, and it will instantly fail all three times and then start working again after my PIN goes in. Very strange. Probably can be fixed with software.
No problems here, had the phone for a week now. I don't think I've had any failed reads, maybe one or two. Very reliable and fast, perfect combo with the face scanner.
Mine was failing like crazy. Tried everything. Took it back and exchanged for a new one and the new one is working great. Definitely some faulty hardware out there

Mine works flawlessly every time. The only thing I don't like is using it at night, and not covering it with my entire finger. When it scans, it's so freakin' bright! LOL
My 7 Pro's sensor worked great, my regular 7's is just plain awful. And I know about the dry hands issue, I've been preaching that people moisturize their hands since under-display sensors came out.
At the first time with my pixel 7 the i had your same issue, fp wasnt working 9 time on 10 but then, after registered it again correctly (reading the on screen instruction while do it) is started to work flawlessly every time. Now it is always unlocking the phone, with more light or in the dark (at night for example) and with low or high brightness.

This was the case with my P7 too. But since past few days, it started to work like 10/10. I haven't noticed any failure since yesterday. Never changed the fingerprint data too.
Update!
I returned the phone. I waited until I got the refund, took a train ride to NYC, and went to Google's Chelsea store. I bought a new Pixel 7 128 GB, traded my Pixel 6, and spend about 2 hours setting up everything in the store. Another advantage of going to the store is that I don't have to pay $600 + tax immediately and then wait 2-3 weeks for a $490 trade-in credit. They take the trade-in and I paid the difference.
If the fingerprint scanner on the new phone would have given me the same issues, I would have at least dealt with it in the store.
And it did start giving me issues initially, but then I asked for assistance and they (store tech support) admitted that Pixel 7's have fingerprint reader problems. He changed the sensitivity setting on the phone and it works (for now).
So clearly I had a bad, faulty phone before. Now, with a phone that I got over the weekend, everything works.

which sensitivity setting ?
The scanner is bad, that's all. The crucial thing to make it usable is the right inital scan, if it records your fingers flawlesly it will work (but not the way we expect, only in an acceptable way).
There is no sensitivity setting, he probably mean the display setting.
