Time (to move on) - Magisk

First of all: no, not from Hans Zimmer, but you may hear the beautiful Inception song as well while reading this... or don't...
Secondly: no I don't need help - so in case you don't have time / don't want to read my story, just don't. You won't be richer afterwards anyway. :')
And thirdly: God, this post won't be easy to write as I'm already sure, that it is going to be longer than imagined, to short because I have missed so much and also forgot to mention a few names, because there are too many names out there from people, who I do admire, are inspirations at&to the core and are really geniuses in their area. And I decided not to use any tags, because it would be just too many... and also to few... And I decided as well not to search for exact names, I'm sorry if I misspelled yours / remembered it incorrectly, I'll try my best.
- I have already said / mentioned it a couple of times that I'm going to stop rooting my next device, which has now arrived and is waiting in its box until the next days... it was real fun with my beloved stolen HTC Desire HD, where the world was still in its shape, XDA was less commercial and you could simply root your phone by using Chainfire's SuperSU - god I miss those days, I really do. Thank you also mike1986.
- After that came my horrible and second more intense endeavor with the LG Optimus 2X, which hurt my relationship with nVidia (yes, it was written like that years ago when I liked it and I still refuse to adapt to the new name) so so much and caused a couple of explosions from myself and as well my girlfriend's, because my phone refuse to ring when being called due to an incompatible RIL. Thank you pengus77 and also Ricardo Cerqueira for the glorious CyanogenMod.
- Things were quite smooth with all of my Xperia phones (Z1 Compact, Z5 Compact and X Performance), because if you knew them you could a) really use them rooted, were b) quite compact and c) you could also restore them fully to stock after they were rooted. So the situation was still ok, but you needed to unlock them after you saved the internal TA image partition, because Sony decided to permanently wipe it once you unlock the bootloader causing a crippled phone, because of missing drm keys. Thanks j4nn, doomlord, devshaft, IgorEisberg, tobias waldvogel, serajr, osm0sis, munjeni, Androxyde (in no particular order) for the experience. And I hate(d) Sony for that, i.e. that you need to a) find a security hole in the OS to be able to store your drm keys, b) they crippled all media on the phone (yes, this includes the camera as well, sadly). Sadly it became impossible to find a new competitive phone from the brand with an already known security hole.
- This story leads now down to the rabbit hole and my current phone: Samsung Galaxy S10. I _never ever_ thought that I'd buy a Samsung device as I usually am more of an underdog brand guy... but as it was more and more difficult to find a device with a) a good camera and b) a micro sd card I decided to expose myself to the Samsung world (side note: I never had a Nokia back then for example as well). That you also (permanently) cripple your phone due to Knox and cause bluetooth connections to be lost on reboot, wearables not to work, broken secure folder, etc. I didn't know, which made me sad - but at least they don't cripple the experience too much like Sony does... i.e. no deal-breaker... still it was a) on one hand a more pleasant experience than expected (god I even tried to stay with Samsung on the next phone), b) my first non-compact phone (with the intention to kill this criteria as well with the next phone) and c) still a phone with a micro sd card. Boy... (or / and girl...) d) rooted.
I needed root because d1) I always used an adblocker (thanks PerfectSlayer for AdAway), d2) used vpn since the x performance (not critical for d2 so far), and always used d3) betterbatterystats (thanks chamonix) + greenify (thanks oasisfeng) + (EdX|LS|X)posed (thanks rovo89, mlgmxyysd, whole LSposed team) which was one big reason to root (and finally became obsolete since Android 10+, because of Google's better deep sleep implementation), d4) backups (thanks to both the whole CWM, TWRP and TitaniumBackup teams) and d5) (also since the x performance) XPrivacy(Lua) (thanks M66B).
Finally we're on point when needed to migrate from SuperSU with SudoHide (or similar) to Magisk (thanks so much to topjohnwu for his efforts: 1) for the idea of Magisk... Google started to cause so much troubles, 2) for the Galaxy S10 procedures specifically -> what a horrible phone this is to root... due to no initramfs in the boot partition you need to either root the phone's (i.e. put Magisk into) kernel (never did that personally) or the recovery. I also wanted to spice up the security a bit, which led to the usage of an encrypted data partition by giving up twrp - bad bad decision, because that's when I had my only bootloop with an encrypted data partition and no way to recover from it, because I accidentally flashed an incomplete image, which shrank my data partition and every attempt to restore from that failed... I didnt bother too much, because I had set up TitaniumBackup and set my phone's camera to the external sd card. That's also exactly when I've realized that Titanium Backup is mostly broken on newer Android versions and my other backups were 3 months old... additionally I had lost the photos of a very cool holiday, because I borrowed my sd card to a friend and as I put it back in so that my girlfriend could take some photos during this trip, she didn't know to set the storage to the external card... I wasn't close by and she forgot to tell. That's how it is with backups: I needed them once all those years (obviously I also flashed, restored apps, etc., but that was all planned) and that's exactly when they don't work. Long story short: now we need people like (topjohnwu, osm0sis, ) byxiaorun, displax, huskydg, the whole Riru team (thanks Rikka and also all the other guys I have missed), didgeridoohan, BostonDan and also summarizers (like pndwal or zgfg to be able to keep up with everything, no disrespect intended [for calling you summarizers]!) to still have a working phone. Specific to the S10: thanks to 3arthur6, pickles, Ianmacd, dr.ketan.
And to be honest: I'm tired of having to write debloat scripts by my own just because I don't want to unencrypt the data partition. Change hex patches with every new major one ui update. copy images back and forth to phone to be able to root them, copy them back to the pc to finally flash them. crossing my fingers for every operation that works when I know that my backup was already long overdue since the last time. Oh I forgot: create my own riru and magisk forks for better hiding purposes when I'm a father of two children with a wife at home. Srsly... enough is enough... so I decided already approx. a year ago to stop rooting phones (screw google for the upcoming TEE enforcement!) and combined d1 and d2 to a vpn solution with ad blocking, stopped d3 alltogether, d4 wasn't working when I needed it most and d5 had to be sacrified... still unsure if my road continues now with Netguard (again: thank you M66B), AdAway or a different VPN solution - we'll see about that as well (and screw google a second time for not being able to use two VPNs at the same time). And screw (most of) all the manufacturers as well for giving up the microsd card slot... it shouldn't be that hard to get a phone with a microsd card slot and a very good camera. Sure there is Huawei (without Google Services, no thanks) or Xiaomi (at least some phones... without root I'm not sure if I would put my trust into this company with their stock firmware as a non-chinese resident) or Sony... where you can't use the camera / make videos for more than a couple of minutes, because they overheat... and that on a ~1400 USD phone. My ass... (sorry for the language). And to sacrifice the microsd slot was once again a tough decision, let's see if it's the right one - only time will tell. But to be able to do that, I wanted a phone with 512GB internal memory. This leaves you now with basically a couple of choices only: S22 Ultra (as being mentioned: would have loved it, but I don't want to spend so much on phones), Asus ROG Phone 6(d), Oppo Find X5 Pro or One+ 10 Pro. Let's see how the story continues... yes, you'll still see me around, but I'm not intending to use the XDA app on the phone anymore and won't stop by / react so frequently anymore. It was fun... (also to see pndwal and / or 73sidney joking around)... oh and I forgot to throw a few ponkles to you guys as well), but time to move on... And as everyone sees / hears, I took a different decision than Hippoman with his new Pixel 5 phone (have fun with that!).
Have a nice day / night everybody! And merry christmas + a happy 2023 as well, over and out (in the next couple of days at least)!

p.s.: Sorry if I have ofended you / caused you any harm / not mentioned you. Sadly I'm not the youngest anymore and time is more precious than ever these days.

[Q] Is it time? Should I put my G1 out to pasture?

Hey Everyone,
It is with a heavy heart that I report that my G1 seems to be on its way out. I have come to everyone at XDA over the past 2 years for both the good and the bad, the easy questions and the hard ones. I come to you again, possibly for the last time in the HTC Dream section, for more advice.
Over the last week my G1 has been acting up daily. I'm currently running CM6 stable release, and I couldn't be happier with the ROM. My problems I think rest solely with the aging hardware. Problems include:
-jittery screen when there is nothing touching the screen
-touchscreen has lost nearly all sensitivity in the 4 corners of the screen
-reboots that randomly bring the phone back to a state from a few days ago (ie when I reboot the phone with deleted shortcuts, alarms and in wifi mode, when the reboot completes the shortcuts will be back, the alarms will be there again and wifi will be turned off etc) almost as if the phone decided to do a nandroid restore all by itself.
-home button not working in anything other than recovery
-"missing SIM card" notifications will randomly appear despite the SIM card being firmly in place and untouched. (usually requires a power-off and a removal/replace of the SIM card)
-the phone seems to be unable to read sdcards (trouble started when I got a "damaged sdcard" notification in the status bar. However, once I plugged in the sdcard to a separate usb adapter, the sdcard and the data was still intact. I reformatted anyways and restored the data. Now I no longer get an error message however, there is no longer an option to mount the sdcard when a usb cable is connected, nor can I get the sdcard to mount in recovery. Additionally, because of the sdcard issues, nothing can be accomplished that needs access to the sdcard i.e. flashing new ROMs, running scripts, taking pictures, apps2sd etc. It seems like the phone's ability to read ANY sdcard is gone.
I guess those are the major ones. Obviously some are way more important than others. I'm having a really hard time convincing myself to keep on trucking with the G1 and spending time every night hashing out things that keep going wrong and doing research.
So I put it to my friends at XDA....any solutions for these ailments or has my G1 simply had enough and is begging me to put the final nail in the coffin?
All the best,
DM
if your having that many problems. I would say its time to put it to rest. And move on to better things. That's a lot of **** to deal with for such an old phone. Don't get me wrong. I love the g1. And I feel for ya man. Another og of android down. RIP

As much as I like my G1, I can see it's days getting shorter. It isn't as bad as your phone, but they all hit obsolescence in their own way.
It sound like it's time to hung up the phone, one last time.
Personally, I'm planning on getting the G2 when it comes out. It can't replace the Original Android, but it will help ease the pain.
DO NOT GET THE G2! 800 MHZ PROCESSER ONLY! YOU WILL REGRET IT, I GUARANTEE YOU THAT!
If you buy it, that's a gasser.

That will be easily overclocked to 1ghz and if you play games, this phone will be unmatched.
I'm a noob by comparison but that sounds like software issues to me, at least partially.
I have to say, my mt3g did a lot of weird **** like that when I installed CM6, but I think I may have just had a corrupted file. Before you decide it's dead, unroot and return to oem and see how it does. You might be surprised...
Unless a good working 1Ghz processor Android phone comes out Id wait.
There are some phones like the Vibrant and Captivate that are almost perfect too but the gps software or maybe even HARDWARE is bad, some have experienced other major issues like the driver isn't compatible and is not picked up by their computer, android lags and you cant use turn by turn Google Navigation on many of them.
You are on T-Mobile so hold out til early next year, there will be more options likely in 2011.

Good point, if this is possible and the CPU is under clocked (Usually the case) from factory that's definitely a logical option.

I believe your solution is a little unreasonable. Any 32B device I say has to be replaced by a stronger device this year! There will be little or no development/support after the G2/Project Emerald has been released and the hardware is horrible. I am embarrassed when someone asks to use my phone since it is really slow.
I saw get the Vibrant, G2 or what until Project Emerald is released.
For me, I want to get the G2 because of
1)Stock Android 2.2
2)The GPU on that device is amazing.
3) The CPU performances better than any old snapdragon 1 Ghz phone.
4) The keyboard brings more options for playing games.
But if it had 1gHz, then it'd easily be OC'd to 1.2gHz. DUH!
I'm getting so impatient for this G2 to hit the stores. If they delay the release I'm going to **** a brick.
EDIT - I LOVE that this forum has no swear filter!
Get it if your contract ends in 1-3 months.
If you contract doesn't end in 1-3 months, wait until it does end so you can choose between the G2 or Project Emerald (or even switch carriers)

Help, anyone?

Guys, just got my phone last week. I read a lot about rooting. Should I root my phone? What are the advantages of it? Havent been able to back my phone yet. When I do root, would it wipe out my phone? Should I wait for the release of the ICS or should I just root now? Also, which link should i follow?
Heres my phones spec:
Model Number: GT-N7000
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: N7000DXKL2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-N7000DXLA1-CL886914
[email protected]#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DXLA1
Please help. I am new to android. thanks!
Its really up to you. If you already satisfy with stock, then just wait for ics. But if you a type of person who could not wait and could not stand with bug on existing stock rom, then go for custom rom. Which ever suit and good for you..my 2 cent.. B-)

Hey, I was in the same boat as you. Dabble with Android, some time back, but left the fold as I thought it hadn't matured enough for me back then. Now I a back - couldn't resist the Note and I find that Android has come along leaps and bounds, more functionality than I could of hoped for. I am glad Im back, and I will be staying
To answer some of your questions,
* Yes root the device (at your own risk of course)
*The advantages are numerous, but to name a few: many apps that can take advantage of your root status, eg Titanuim backup. Once rooted, you can explore different roms (firmwares developed/enhanced by others), kernels etc which can increase the speed, functionality etc of your phone. You make full backup of your phone prior to changing or trying different roms, that way if something goes wrong, you can load your last working copy etc. For example, Im just trying a new/different kernel or a ROM developed by a totally different person. Pretty cool really.
At the end of the day it is entirely up to you, but there is a whole different world out there waiting for you if you go the 'root' path.
Good luck and enjoy..

Thanks for the reply. Can you provide me the links that i need to be able to do the rooting?
No problems. Unfortunately you have one of the newer firmwares which are not directly rootable. All is not lost though, you can still root your phone, it just involves al little more effort on your part. Read the linked post very carefully, following the instructions regarding not directly rootable firmwares:

Good luck..

No problem at all.
Moved to Q&A
All question in the Q&A section please!
Root, root, root!
I must say I tried to avoid it and wait for ICS, but the battery drain was giving me grief. Here's why I rooted, and will root evermore:
There are dozens of 'stock' apps that pop up and start chewing through your battery any time they feel like it. The are all small apps, but there are a lot of them, and it really eats into your battery life and RAM.
Even if you kill them off, either with a task killer or manually, they pop right back up again, sometimes within seconds. This is because they have 'listeners' registered with the OS, and they respond to any of these events they have registered to listen for.
I use Autorun Manager to both stop them starting at boot, and to turn off all 'listeners' these apps have in place. My device then only runs what I want it to run!
The other extremely nice thing to have, and one that I find I just cannot do without, is a firewall. I use DroidWall, and it allows me to specify exactly which apps can get access to the internet, and how (by WiFi, Mobile, or both). This gives you battery savings and mobile data savings, and it also provides a certain level of security because malicious apps just cannot send personal information back to base (like they certainly can without a firewall).
I immediately increased battery life by 50%. I have added another 50% by sleeping the WiFi, because I can now specify only WiFi for apps (so they don't jump on mobile data when WiFi is asleep, like they used to, I think).
One happy Rooter!
Hello to OP and the above warm-hearted members
I had similar question and a bit over it. I thought I could add it to this thread instead of making a whole new thread.
During my short days with GNexus, I learned quite a lot of things (my 1st Android Device), for example, the elementary intro to fastboot and adb.
However, after switching to Note, I found there is no fastboot mode? Or at least, pressing volume rockers+power button didn't do the trick. Am I missing something here? Because everytime I search "fastboot mode (or bootloader) and Galaxy Note", all the results turn out to be about Galaxy Nexus...
Really confused..
I don't know if this helps you but since noone has responded I can tell you this.
Holding Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button boots you in Recovery mode where you can install ROMs, kernels and updates, wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, battery stats do factory reset, make nandroid backup and restore and some other stuff.
Holding Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button boots you in download mode where you can connect to Odin and do stuff.
Thanks! So it's quite different when there's an extra physical button
I just tried and it works.
Is the recovery mode the equivalent to fastboot mode?

[Q] Roll back to KK - With root and debloat?

Hi all,
Any easy / straightforward way to roll back to KK? I've tried my best to like lollipop, but ugh
I'd like to get back to KK, with root access and a debloat of sorts but maintaining DRM keys for camera functionality... anyone have a straightforward guide?
Could care less about google apps, but I do use the maps navigation quite alot... but hangouts, google now etc just irritates me.. is this possible?
Im all stock, never modded
Regards
I'm not an expert by any means, but can show you the guide I used. I was really glad I did it - it's involved, but totally worth it, and increased my Android ability/confidence with the Z3C. Losing the DRM keys, uncertainties with the bootloader etc. still make me nervous but my phone is currently the best it's ever been. Am on stock but rooted and partially debloated.
I'm on my phone at the moment but tomorrow at my desk I'll pull up the link for you.

So this is the guide I used:
How-to: root, keep and backup DRM keys, etc. [KitKat/Lollipops]
..and I went from stock Lollipop I'd upgraded OTA, down to a rooted KK. For reference, from that guide, I'm a SIM free UK user so downloaded that .77 firmware and then built my own pre-rooted image when it came to step 26. The guide is, in only a few places, a little bit vague but it it's easy to figure out yourself once you're halfway through the process and actually doing it all.
While the process was involved, I did not find it challenging or frightening. Read it through several times in advance before attempting it, and download all the files you'll need ahead of time to save waiting around once you're actually rooting. Obviously back up all your valuable data before starting, just in case. If you come across any errors, make sure you have ADB debugging enabled, allow mock locations (and I also checked allow unknown sources as well). Also make sure you have all the relevant drivers. These are the most common things that trip people up when rooting on any device, in my experience so far.
Once you've successfully completed the process, I then installed a tool called Debloater. This is very easy to use, and allows you to tick off packages that you want to block, but you can also remove them entirely. What I'm doing right now is running for a week or two with the packages blocked that I'll probably want to remove, and once I'm satisfied everything is safe, I'll then actually remove them down the line.
There's no definitive list of what each package is or does though, so I removed the ones I definitely wanted to get rid of that I knew were obvious plus a few others that I took a safe guess at, or used other a few people's posts and cross-referenced them. Be careful though, some are essential to keep! I have those links bookmarked on my home PC and can dig them out for you once you're at that stage! Or alternatively, compile a list of what I've blocked myself. But I guess some of the fun is customising it to your own needs anyway, and learning along the way
Any questions, please let me know. I'm far from an expert but these boards don't seem to be too vibrant for our phones compared to other devices, probably because it took so long to get us to the point of being able to do this. Still, it's the best device I've ever owned and I'm very, very happy with where it is now thanks to the hard work of those who made root etc. possible.
This is awesome, ive got myself rooted and everything now.. will go ahead and deblot
I also concur regarding the phone.. easily my best too!
Thanks again

H811VK (TMo G4) bootlooping, need2preserve data, didn't want2replace so soon

Hi ...
So about Tuesday (14th) morning, my G4 rebooted itself, and went into perpetual bootloop. I bought it on 3/10/2016, so it was out of warranty by a few days. I'd heard, various places online, that people were getting their G4s fixed even out of warranty, but ....
First, I went to the T-Mobile store where I bought the phone. The rep there didn't know about the bootloop issue, and said he wasn't able to help me.
Next, I contacted LG live chat online, and they said they were unable to help because the camera lens is broken. (That happened within a month or so after getting the phone. Even if I didn't tell them up front, they still would have found out when they got it. I'd considered buying a replacement & installing it myself previously, but never could figure out which was the exact OEM model or where to get it.)
I really need to preserve the data that's on the phone. I'm not just talking about pictures, documents, downloaded files, etc (I think camera pics are backed up automatically, but idk about screenshots for example) ... I also mean Wi-Fi credentials, my 60-70+ open Chrome browser tabs & history, txt/mms messages, call logs, voice mails (stored in the T-Mo Visual Voicemail app) - basically everything.
Both T-Mobile and LG, if I understood right, told me that if they took the phone in for repair, one of the first things they'd do is factory reset it, which would wipe out that data, and I can't have that.
I'm at a loss for what to do right now. I really want to get my specific phone's bootloop / motherboard issue fixed, with its data retained, and not get it replaced, at no cost to me. (Don't care so much about the camera, it's still working fine even with the external lens busted off.) If I have to replace the phone, I still need to preserve the data I mentioned above, plus anything else I may have forgotten. (Basically a full system image/clone.) Also I haven't rooted / installed a custom OS.
If replacing with a new phone is in order, I'll want a really good one without breaking the bank. (I was going to keep the G4 until 2020 or 2021, if not longer - my T-Mobile G1 lasted 4.5 years and was a then-lower-end phone at the time than the G4.) I'm still trying to figure out what all I want in the phone, or what my budget is. (I *do* know I don't want anything by Apple, or an equivalent of the G4 or Note 7 of course.) My initial budget idea (ONLY for complete phone replacement, NOT if repair is involved), subject to modification, would include taking the $ I would have used to upgrade my 4790K desktop PC to Ryzen 7, and instead getting a new phone. I'm thinking anywhere from $300 to $800. A few preliminary models that popped up in my search are the LG G6, Galaxy S8, Note 8, 1+5, Pixel/2, and a few other Asian-sounding brands I'm not sure about yet. If it's decided I have to get a new phone, I'll be making another post/thread asking for more advice in detail on that.

If I have to replace the phone, I still need to preserve the data I mentioned above, plus anything else I may have forgotten.
If it's decided I have to get a new phone, I'll be making another post/thread asking for more advice in detail on that.

the safe way is to do the freezer method search and youll find tutorial.. get you data and stuff. use titanium to back up apps with data with the paid app..

I've heard of the freezer method. I did pop it in the fridge and it almost started to work for a minute, but maybe I should try the freezer. I've also heard of people heating it and getting some temporary use out of it.
I have the paid Titanium Backup on my rooted Galaxy Relay 4G, but I haven't rooted the G4. And, once I went to a new phone, how would I restore without root? (I'd decided not to root until the warranty expired, but it'd be nice to get one that's more friendly to that in the future, also have better full backups, etc.)
Also I've heard there's a way to disable a couple cores & get it working that way, but I have Marshmallow and I hear it requires Lollipop.

Hmm... well since I can't boot (for now) past the LG screen, idk if I can even get TO a place where I can attempt a rollback.
And even if I have to use other methods to get the data back (so long as it doesn't cost much, as in less than the cost of an SD card) ... then another important criteria for my next phone is automatic backup of *everything*, either to the cloud, or to a second removable micro SD card, or something. (And, by backup of everything, I mean full system image basically.)
And the data I'm talking about includes, but is not limited to, call logs, browser history & open tabs (chrome was my primary browser on that phone), sms/mms messages, saved voicemails (in the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app), and other things that aren't saved in places like Documents, Downloads, DCIM, Pictures, etc.

is bootloopng . thats a hardware issue.. i would suggest to do the freezer method .making sure no moist gets in phone.. i think people put in frezzer with cable and recovers their data.
So ... the freezer method has worked (with the phone in a Ziploc bag), at least partially. After turning off WiFi, a few days ago I was able to use ES File Explorer (already installed) to copy the internal phone memory to a 128GB SD card which was only about 10-20% full or so. (I couldn't copy absolutely everything, as my G4 isn't rooted yet.) I did it in stages - first copied several user data folders just in case it croaked mid-backup (it didn't), then did the rest.
Just earlier this morning, I used SuperBackup+ (or whatever it's called, I forget atm & the phone's charging again) to back up a few more things.
Then I went into the settings to see if anything was set to back up to the cloud, or could be backed up. Under "Backup and Reset", it was set to back up to my Google account. I also checked a few other settings.
Right before turning on WiFi again, I opened CPU-Z, to find most of the temps around 8°C. After turning WiFi back on, within seconds most of the temps shot up to the 30s to 60s °C, and the top 2 on the list (which included battery) pegged at 140°C, then the phone rebooted itself. So apparently turning WiFi on quickly overwhelms the phone. (I can't use mobile data, as I took the SIM card out and am using it in my SGH-T699 for now.) It then started up briefly, and while I *think* I may have been able to turn off WiFi again before it rebooted again, it started looping, from what I could tell. (Was probably time to take a break anyway, as I'd been standing there for a good 10-15 minutes or so with the freezer door open.)
I'm still hoping I might have a little bit of life left for backing up, after giving the phone a rest, battery a charge, letting the freezer settle down, and refreezing the phone.
One more thing I'd like to do with the phone - root it. Is there a way to do it without an internet connection, if possible without a computer (although maybe I could shut the freezer door on the USB cable), and for sure without wiping the device? I'd really like to use Titanium Backup Pro (already installed) to back everything up to the 128GB SD card.
Also I've heard about possibly disabling the two fast CPU cores, but also heard that may only work on Lollipop. (My G4 has Marshmallow installed.)
Anyway, right now the phone is plugged in (out of the freezer) and charging again. Interesting thing though ... while it was powered on in the freezer, it was saying I had 51% battery left. (This was right after I'd pulled it off the charger and it said 98-100% or so - the powered-off battery meter.) Then, plugging it back in (again powered off), it said 78%. Is the huge discrepancy in battery percentages temperature related, or indicative of another issue like a weakening battery? (The battery hasn't swelled at all, from what I can tell.)
I think it's time for a new phone soon, though. I might make another topic with more details, but a few I'm looking at maybe are the Asus Zenfone AR, Google Pixel, OnePlus 3T, Samsung Galaxy S7, maybe a few others. (I'm not as sure about the LG G6 or V20.) Other brands under consideration include HTC, Huawei, LeEco, Motorola, Oppo, vivo, Xiaomi & ZTE.
Basically I'd like something that
officially supports rooting / custom ROMs (and stock ROM is as close to vanilla Android as possible),
is officially supported for updates for a good while (for example if it comes with Android 7, I can upgrade to 9 or if possible 10 OTA, and beyond with community-made ROMs),
has a decent CPU/GPU (like SD 820/821/835 & Adreno 530/540),
plenty of RAM (6+ GB),
a decent amount of internal storage (64+ GB),
has either a micro SD slot or supports USB OTG or both,
among other things.
I'm guessing the 1+3T might be the best compromise? (Or stretch the budget & get the Pixel?) Or should I maybe consider waiting for the Pixel 2 or the OnePlus 4/5? Or get one of the other options / something else entirely? (I'd like to buy within the next month or two, if not sooner.) I had been planning to upgrade my desktop PC to AMD Ryzen 7, but figured I'd use the $ I would have spent on that, on the phone instead. (I can limp along on my i7-4790K a while longer, or my laptop's i7-6700K, etc, it'll just be somewhat slower in video editing, multitasking, etc. From what I hear my i7s are maybe faster at 1080p gaming, but I don't game all that much.)
I'm on T-Mobile - the $30/month 5GB+100min plan for now, but eventually tentatively plan to upgrade to unlimited with the unlimited hotspot addon.

Hello all, after lurking in the shadows forever, ive formally joined, thanks for all the advice and help to those in past threads, and future.

Ive actually been following the advice of many on this site for, ****, a couple few years now. i have a super unorthodox way of doing things, like how i figured out how to succesfully bypass frp on most samsung devices without a computer, last one i did was a couple weeks ago. because i dont have "class time" or training in coding or development besides what ive learned from you guys, i try alot of **** alot of pros wouldnt based on it shouldnt work that way, but, if i think i can weasel my way through anyway i usually prevail, and its usually by the application of a bunch of stupid little tiny actions. long story short i have to do things the hard way, guy could just grab a zte, install twrp app, flash recovery then in twrp recovery flash magisk, done. nope, too fricken easy. i gotta always get a lg, motorola or an iphone, before Uncover 8.0.2 was out, well before it was out i had my iphone 12 pro max jailbroken on 14.8. and i hope yall enjoy this as much as i did. i turned my ish app which i got from the app store jjst to make Apples butt hurt just a little more, i manipulated some filed and configs and basically turned it into Kali-Alpine lol, i then installed the checkrain debian, and yes jailbroke it from within, apples mdm is like neck and neck wiht you i learned while doing this, but when i did my ish filesystem editing, i didnt mount it until i was ready, and when i mounted thatfilesystem, you should ahve seen that realtime log light up, anyway, they said tell a story or something, and this will always be one of my favorite moments in triumph, because i took everything they use to keep a handle, as the very tools to take over the device lol.
in closing, i hope to give back for the advice and knowledge ive recieved in my time around. i will soon share my samsung debloat batch file, and a cople combination firmwares i have, and a magisk patched SM-A530W AP file whixh i also loaded the no verity/force encrypt kernel and twrp recovery image into, /system is mounted rw, props edited wiht all security disabled, and yes, kgclient removable, like totally uninstallable and everything is fine after, currently working on how to successfully boot and operate Samsung devices with 0x030c, bootloader code
