Hi
Trying to repair a Samsung SM-A715F/DS mobile phone. It began experiencing issues with the battery not holding charge. This lead to the phone not charging or turning on at all. I replaced the battery and charging port and the phone seemed to charge once and comes on now but again has started refusing to charge. Not sure what to do now any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
buy new cable? If you already changed the usb jack, it's either serious hardware issue or software prevents charging (very unlikely)
Is there no way I can fix it then if it's a serious hardware issue ?
Depends on country. In Venezuela probably repair shops can fix it. In Germany repair shop will just replace the whole pcb mainboard. If you would have the knowledge to fix it yourself you wouldn't ask here, so the answer is NO
Well that was kind of the point of asking here but whatever then.
This is a developer forum, not a technical support. you cannot expect that coding nerds have soldering skills to mess with hardware. typing on a keyboard is much more comfortable than understanding and repairing hardware. Do you have any imagination about how tiny these parts are?

I managed to fry my kaisers circuits by plugging a 4 AMP car charger into the USB power port.
It only took one second, i smelled the smoke and instantly unplugged the cable, but it was too late.
Surprisingly the device was still powered and functioning, so i didn't freak out. The battery was already dead. after around 30 seconds it died again, i walked back home and tried charging it with mains adapter with no luck.
Next morning, i took my handset to a local electronics repair shop to check it, and i told them the story. they called me back and said the motherboard needs to be replaced. and it would cost me around $470. (and its not covered by manufacturers warranty. ouch!!)
After hours of cursing and smashing my head into the steering wheel, i thought i'll pick it back and try something my self.
the part where the device stayed on even after the smoke came out led me to believe that the board is still fine. and that only the charging port got fried.
the problem is, I don't have a desk charger to charge my battery and test my theory, a disassembly guide would also be very helpful.
if the main mother board was really fried, is there any place that i can buy it from? i did some goggling around with no luck.Anything cheaper than what these guys are asking for would be great, i have a feeling they are trying to rip me off.
If any of you guys can help me out, id be grateful.

I have a brand new AT&T Tilt ( kaiserII HTC8925) for sale i can sell to you for $375.00 New In the box never been used. PM me if interested.
Sorry I can't help in this matter, but I thought i would post this here rather than start a whole new thread.
I have heard lots of horror stories of in-car chargers frying kaisers. Has anyone got an in-car charger that works?

Order one that is made for the Kaiser...a lot of people are trying to use old chargers just cause the tip is the same.
I got my stuff from PocketSolutions.com
Car chargers that work for the 8525 should work fine for the 8925. It just can't do that "boost" charging feature the Tilt supposedly has.

That one won't damage the Kaiser, but it has only half the mA of the proper one. This can sometimes cause problems if the charge level of the battery is very low. For charging from time to time and when battery isn't near empty you will be ok.
Mike
well a quick tip would probably be checking the fuze on your charger, anything below an amp wouldnt do much damage. -.-;
4 amps fried my tilts motherboard, so watch out guys
still looking for a service manual, now that my phone is dead, i want to dissect it,
I'm using a cheapy chinese one made for an Imate Jam if that helps.

the part of the board responsible for charging is probably what went up in smoke - you probably smelt (smelled?) resistors/capacitors overheating/melting - they said a total mobo replace as that circuitry is probably all on the same board - sure you might be able to replace it yourself but i dunno - might be a bit of a mega mission what with all these micro components around on these sorts of device

Yep, these devices now have multilayer boards that make it virtually impossible to do a bit of home soldering/component replacement on.
Bring back the days of my youth when we had valves (tubes in US I believe), they were nice - and kept your hands warm as you soldered away in a freezing garage

I opened up the case and unscrewed my way to the burnt part of the board.
thanks to mike and the manual he posted on some other fourm

Okay now i can at least see where the damage is.
Still stubborn that i am, I did not believe that this IC killed the entire mobo, so i invested in a desk charger for the battery and charged it up fully.
I just tested it now and to my surprise it WORKED!!

Of course, my joy ride did not last for long as the device started heating up. I switched it back off once i felt the abnormal amount of heat generated.
I tried it again after it cooled down. This time I kept it for around three mins, and again it heated up, at the end of, it just shut it self off. (still heating up).
After that scary little experiment i learned few things:
1- The device motherboard is alive, there is no need to replace the entire board.
2- The burnt IC is probably meant to control the usb port and the power, therefore my usb port is useless at this stage.
3- charging the battery externally wont help much without resolving the heat issue.
I tried to look up diagrams for the devices board and the only thing i could found is this:
http://www.cdmatech.com/download_library/pdf/diagram_msm7200_cs.pdf
which is useless.
Any help would be much appreciated..
cheers

the chip burnt shown in the picture above needs to be replaced on my tytnz mobo.
can anyone give me more details about it or where can i find a replacement, all i could read on it is the (QRA) part, if anyone has a tytn II could you have a closer look, grab me a serial number maybe.

Hello,
unfortunately, my micro USB connector is broken.
The battery will not charged.
Is there an instruction how can I change the mini micro USB or is there another possibility.
greets uzzoo
You can buy a seperate charger that charges the battery out of the phone, its expensive to have the micro USB port swopped out - unless you are to the job your self :
An external charger I ordered mine.
Would like to change the USB port itself, there is a tutorial somewhere as I ran to get the board?

The simple fact that you are asking for a tutorial means that you will not be able to do this job. It requires removing and replacing the actual port from the motherboard which requires some precision soldering. Send it away for repair if you wish it to be fixed.

That's a bit presumptuous! The OP might well be confident with soldering and internal electronics and by the sound of his post is (possibly! ) looking for a diagram of the board itself.
It is indeed a tricky job but the guys in the repair centre started somewhere too. For all we know the OP might even consider his HD2 expandable for such a learning experience!
Good luck OP. And you can't go wrong with an external battery charger, couple of £s from eBay. Although ive found they tend to only charge to 99% and lose the first 10% quicker than if you'd charged via the phone.

I had this exact problem a few months ago. If you find a very skilled solderer... i.e. someone competent solder smd devices then you can re-solder the usb connector back onto the board. I would not advise doing this if you are new to soldering!
If you can't then its a new motherboard, and HTC will not pay for it under warranty because its deemed damage do to excessive use.
no the only thing you can do is a new motherboard it is'nt possible to fix it i have had the same problem cost me 200 euro.
Wow, I feel like McGuyver.
My Incredible S stopped charging when I was fiddling around with a car charger. Also USB-data connection to the computer did not work anymore.
I suspected that there was a fault in the car electric and a chip was blown by too high voltage.
I still have had a torx driver since I changed the screen on my former Wildfire. So I wanted to see if there was a little chance to repair it.
When I opened the device I could not see anything burnt or so inside. The USB-Port was connected with a flex cable to the main board. I removed it. Then I connected the port to an USB-Port of my computer and tried to measure if there was any voltage. Of course I "managed" to create a shortcut while measuring and my computer shut down immediately. Anyway, I had the impression that there was no voltage at the end of the flex cable. I did a little Google search and found out that there were some offerings for an "USB Flex Board" for the Incredible S. So I decided to spend the 25€ on this little piece of nothing.
Today I replaced the old USB - et voila - it works!
I found some articles on the net from people with similar problems but no solution. So I hope this might help. Perhaps the flex cable blows easily or the solder joints between port and flex cable get broken after a while. Somebody offers the USB-socket without flex cable. This is completely useless because the socket won't broke and you won't be able to solder it on the little flex cable.
If you want to try it on your own. I highly recommend to watch the YT-Video on how to open the Incredible. You should have the torx driver and a very small watchmaker driver for these two very little screws on the main board.
How to open the Incredible S:

There are many more on YT just do a search.

Same to me before it fully stopped working. I suspect the soldering joints are breaking after a while.
Mine is broken too.
Thank you for that. I've ordered a new one and hope it will work again
I've got to admit that's dedication. If that happened to my phone id just buy a new one lol. So well done!

Thank you for sharing. I'm undecided whether I should repair for myself and really void the guarantee or if I should send it to HTC for repair.
Why did you not use guarantee? HTC provides 24 months?
Don't you trust "Arvato Services Solution GmbH"?
Have you been afraid of being rejected because of S-OFF?
It seems that one can buy the USB connector also at ebay:
Search for "USB Power Charger Charging Connector Port Flex Cable HTC Incredible S S710e G11" or similar.

My warranty was void anyway through heavy ROM-Flashing and I thought I cooked a chip inside at first. If you still have warranty you should send it in of course.
But you have to wait for a while and you won't feel like McGuyver
Thanks for the info and for posting the info!
Firstly, I would apologize for replying to a year old thread.
@tricki, thanks for your post. You gave me the courage to replace my damaged USB port. For my fellow Inc S users who have a damaged USB port, you can find all the required replacement parts in ebay. The replacement takes 15 to 20 minutes (Okay, 30 min. for a first timer). Make sure you purchase a kapton tape just in case your old tape inside the phone refuses to stick again (like mine!). To remove the two tiny screws on the motherboard, you need a #0 philips screw driver (I did not have this at hand the first time I opened the device, so I had to order one and wait for it to arrive). Be gentle while flipping the mother board..It is not that hard anyway.
I posted this because I wanted to share my experience with you guys. My phone is now charging normally and the most important part is.... my computer detects my phone properly!
I also changed my usb port. It's really easy to do it. So, do not waste yours money and just do it.
Incredibly Tapatalked!
Hello, I bought a Lumia 820 a few months ago but it has just stopped charging. Last night I noticed the phone charging very slowly (1%-2% an hour) and thought nothing of it because I had it tethering at the same time. However after turning it off and going to sleep, leaving the phone to charge overnight, I woke to find the phone had only charged a little and was no longer charging. I'm pretty sure this would be covered by the warranty, but I installed the dev preview . I have very little if any money available to fix it so I have a few questions.
First let me start by saying I am in the UK for anything that may be country specific. Also the phone was new from Amazon UK
1. Is there any chance Nokia will fix it for me under warranty? If not, roughly how much will it cost?
2. Would a wireless charger still be able to charge it? I am a very technical person but I do not know if the two charging circuits are separate (until they meet at the battery) or are joined completely.
3. Is there any chance of fixing it myself? Or using a repair service? If it was a cheaper phone I would just use a repair service from a local place but this is the most expensive phone I've ever owned and I'd rather not risk it being damaged more or me being ripped off.
Thank you for your time, sorry if this is the wrong place but there was a similar topic when I made this but the problem wasn't the same.
I'm pretty desperate so any help is welcomed, thanks.
Ben.
Hey everyone,
I recently replaced the battery and USB port in my Tab S 10.5 because it wasn't charging properly and the battery eventually died on me. The battery was sitting around for about 1.5 years before I got around to installing it and I believe it was second hand. After replacing the battery/USB port I realised it still wasn't charging so I tested the battery voltage and realised it's 2.81v when it should be 4.2v on both cells when charged (it's a 3.8v battery).
Does anyone know what is the likely problem? I don't know if 2.8 volts is too low or if that's just normal discharge voltage. I need to know if it's worth me buying a new battery or not because obviously I don't want to spend the money on another battery if the problem is something else. Is there any way of troubleshooting whether the battery is the problem or not? What other problems could cause a device to just not start entirely? I know the charging port could be another issue but that's why I replaced it, the replacement was second hand though (despite being advertised as new). Nothing bad has happened to the tablet, I've never dropped it or got it wet for example.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to discuss hardware like batteries but I couldn't find any other place to discuss something like this.
Thanks for any help,

Hello,
Please check the soldering join of the battery socket on the PCB. You may need to use a magnifier or similar tools to get a good look. The solder joins seem to be pretty weak and could be damaged when you replaced the battery. Socket pins on the plastic plug came with those Chinese replacement battery has high insertion force. They make good contact with the pin on the plastic PCB receptacle but could exert excessive force on the PCB join during engaging or removal. It is feasible to repair it if you have suitable soldering tip (chisel type is better) and good eyes. Space is limited due to the RF shielding cage right besides the join. Try going in from the top near vertical way. If available, try working with a microscope.
I went through more or less the same thing you had. First replacing the battery, and port, But performance was strange. Sometimes it charges well to 100% But once in a while it stops in the middle. When the capacity went below 60%, tablet could reset under heavy use. Sometimes it drops from 40% to 15% in less than 15 minutes. It got worse and worse. After installing 3C Battery Manager, I found out there was sudden and severe voltage drop and temperature spike when resetting happens. At the beginning I suspected battery issues as we all know getting those replacement battery is like a gamble. I got another battery from a different vendor and similar thing happened. After fixing the soldering joins, it works really well now and I can enjoy a few days on light use without charging.
Also, some of those replacement batteries are picky on charger. Most likely due to the "innovative" cost-cutting protection circuit design. Some fast charger use a very low charging current and takes very long time to get to 100%.
Good luck !
If it's a multilayered PCB be very careful soldering it. You need to know how to solder well. Excessive/prolonged heating and poor desoldering technique can destroy them.
Replace the battery and go from there. It may have auto shutdown from low cell voltage, if so it's not worth mucking with.
If that doesn't get it's probably a mobo failure of some type.
Hey guys thanks for your replies. Sorry that I forgot about this after I didn't get any replies or I would of updated it. I did manage to get it sorted, the problem was the charger I was using, it wasn't providing enough current so the battery refused to charge at all. It would only charge when plugged into the mains on a decent adapter.
