Not booting on battery - Xiaomi Redmi 4X Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
So I am trying to repair/start my old redmi 4 but the device does not stays on in twrp when I unplug it. The device remains on in fastboot mode without plugged in. If I use twrp when plugged it work but the moment I unplug it dead. I also tried to flash stock miui from fastboot but device not booting.
Is there any solution for this? Or tell me the problem in which part of device.

Probably the battery is old and decrepit.
Have you left it on the charger overnight?

It's probably still weak to the point of being useless.
You'll probably need a new battery if you intend to use this as a portable device.

Far as I know the HD& can only be charged while turned on. At first I thought I had a defect unit, but as I read on the net and in reviews that it only charges while being on.
Hope this helps

i turn off the phone and i put the phone to the charger. That's it.
I think is it important, i charge it via charger, NOT via laptop.

I have to call BS on this one, at least if you're using an HD7... Unless you mean when you let it die til it's very end, and then when you plug it in it DOES show that, but temporarily until the phone has enough juice to turn on... then it does.

Plug it in using the stock charger and just leave it over night. Also I believe there is a guide under general or android development that will help this.
But what I usually do when this happens is leave it on the charger until it comes back to life.

Leave it charging on the stock charger (or a touchstone, but preferably the stock charger) at least overnight, if not a bit longer, and then follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426244
Read the whole guide, it's long but you'll get a lot of information out of it. If you're having problems with novaterm, there's a good work around on page 12.
Good luck.

That's why you should leave it plugged in at least overnight, if not longer, on the stock charger. If you try to charge it off the computer it won't work. The computer's usb port doesn't put out enough juice to charge the tablet.
Once you have let it charge on the stock charger for a long time, and the tablet is off, press power and volume up simultaneously. That will get you into usb mode, which is what you want to do. Once there put the commands in one by one and let them execute. Answer yes to the questions at the start. Again, if you have problems with novaterm, there's a good work around on page 12. Read the whole thread, it's full of good information.

Leave it charging, preferably on the stock charger, if not on a touchstone. If you can't get it charged, your battery might have gone bad. But keep trying to get it charged.
Here is where you need to go. The person who started the thread here actually knows how to fix it.

Hi guys,
I think Im in a similar situation. Ive had the HP Touchpad a while now, and Ive had this happen to me once before... where it wont turn on. However after leaving it a while to charge (like overnight) it came back to life. However Im getting nothing currently. Ive tried everything, leaving it on charge for a day, tried all the combo buttons, nowt!!!
1) How long should I leave it on charge? More than a day, like 2x days constantly plugged in?? Is there a risk the device could blow up if battery is bad, or does it have a surge/protection to prevent this??
Nothing comes up on the screen, no symbols or writing, and no light on the home button. Before it died it was running a triple boot of WebOS, Android 4.4.4 and Linux. I dont really want to format it if I can help it...
I have the original wall charger, but not the original usb cable. Ive tried a couple of different charges as well as the official, as I heard someone say trickle charge it too... But so far, nowt....
How long does it take to come back to life??
Thanks, Lister

Can you be a little more specific as to what you've tried that's not letting it charge at all?
Unless you guys were messing with fast charge or something's seriously wrong with the CM10.1 kernel/you made an error while flashing, you really shouldn't be able to disable your device from charging, so much as just mess up how your OS is measuring charge...do you not see the notification light?

Fast charge is a kernel option that's included as a quick toggle/option in a lot of custom ROMs. It doesn't necessarily mean your phone will charge any faster-- it usually disables a phone's USB functionality so that it charges about as fast on USB as it does on AC (not really, but that's a good enough working explanation).
Have yo ujust let the phone sit for a while before trying to restart? If so, and you'r estill having trouble, can you get into fastboot or a recovery?
This should also probably be in the Q&A section, by the way-- you're more likely ot get a response there.

Then I'd suggest you post in the Q&A/troubleshooting forums, or the dedicated thread for the ROM you downloaded. At this point, it's probably time to look into something a little more complex than what I (or others) should be posting in this particular forum.

Sudden Death?

I left my phone overnight with low battery, the next morning, the phone can't be turned on with only red led charging, very similar to Xperia Z's sudden death.
First day, I was able to charge it and power it up to the CM boot animation.
Then I wasn't able to charge it, however can enter fastboot mode, but not flash mode.
The first night, somehow I can charge it and I left it charged over night.
Second day, out of nowhere, I can enter flashmode for once, but cannot flash any .ftf because some errors with loader.sin. After I unplugged my phone, I can't enter flashmode back again.
And now, whenever I plugged in my phone to wall charger/laptop usb, my phone red led is blinking for about 3s and then off for about 30s. Can't enter flashmode/fastboot whatever...
Is this the sudden death like other xperia z? But I've left my phone battery went to 0% several times before and I never had this problem until now....
Someone please share your thoughts and help me in this.
Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

Try flashing a stock/custom kernel IMG through fastboot, charge it up, see what happens. If necessary, flash a whole ROM - try the AOSP Lollipop yuga port we have, it's meant to be flashed via fastboot.

I flashed my previous working nightly kernel via fastboot before, and the device still failed to bootup.
I didn't flash ROM because the device can't even bootup (ought to be kernel fault or some other unknown problems)

Hmm. Try replacing the battery, maybe? Highly unlikely to work, but I got nothing else. I brick my phone on an almost weekly basis, and I've never come across a problem like yours. ?
I think so too. may be battery has past its life. or could be kernel issue. If you able to flash stock kernel or any other then are you not able to power on keeping the phone connected to charger instead of powering up on battery?

Currently I kept plugging in my phone, hoping for that just one time that it might be connected in flash mode, then I can flash a stock kernel+ROM to try out.
On another note, from what I see, it might not be battery issue because I can't boot up the phone on charger without battery. I'm supposed to be able to do that right?

See if your battery's shape is changed or not i.e it is curved.
Normally battery is flat and you cannot spin it on a smooth flat surface. This is a good sign and your battery is in good condition
But if you battery is spinning then it is little bit curved so chemicals inside are not able to create reaction need to power the battery. It won't even last 10 mins even After 3 hrs of charging.
What I think is, your battery is damaged, when you go into fastboot or flashmode your battery dies!
Typical condition in humid climate!
Just another suggestion

Battery sides should be flat if you keep on a table or a flat surface. If you try to spin the battery and it spins then there is a swollen bulge in the middle which suggests that battery has gone bad. The chemicals inside are leaking. You must change the battery before it explodes while charging and totally damage phone circuit and might do some harm to you to.
I removed the battery and tried to power up the phone while connected to wall charger but I couldnt which means ZR cant be powered up without battery.
Check online for original battery or replacements available. :good:

Thanks for confirming that ZR can't be powered up without battery, makes me more confident that it is battery issue.
Will look for battery replacement and come back here with results.
Thanks.
Dear All,
Thank you for all the thoughts, suggestions and solutions.
I managed to find a replacement battery for my ZR and it can be powered up again. Hence all my described issues are due to bad battery.
However my ZR now experiences weird issues after back from grave, like WiFi downlink shoots to max for unknown reasons and random reboots (especially on WiFi, random reboots even happens while charging power off). Prime suspects are: 1. I didn't charge my new battery up to 8 hours before use; 2. I kinda broke my kernel or ROM in my previous attempt to revive my phone.
I'm going to reflash my kernel and ROM, and charge my phone overnight. Will let you guys know if everything is fine.
Thank you so much.

I think its a ROM/Kernel issue coz you won't need to charge a Li-ion battery for long time before first use..it should be done for Nickel Cadmium batteries and not for li-ion..so that might not be the issue

Now I can't even boot into my ROM, because the first thing I see before my homescreen is "Powering Down".

Any known cause for auto shutdown?

Battery 100% On, 80% Off

phone says 100% but says 80% when off charging
Tried:-
1. 2 different battery callibration apps
2. charging 100%, depleting battery. repeated process a couple of times
3. Switched to Stock (Rooted), 2 Custom ROMs (Waited till it was 100% on both on and off before flashing)
Notes:-
1. Battery seems perfectly fine (takes a while before depleting and doesnt deplete before 0%)
Currently using stock rooted
l would start with replacing the cable and charger to make sure you are getting a full charge. Then monitor the usage time on your phone over a few weeks and see if the time to empty is getting less that is a sure sign of a bad battery
Recheck with another fast charger. Generally, we cannot say if is a faulty cable or you have an faulty adapter. I hope the device chargeboard is not shot/motherboard driven related issue. Also, have you recovered the device using Samsung Kies- Emergency firmware recovery?

With original charger it takes 6hrs!!! Holy ****
I think its a usb port problem for sure.. Do one thing while connected to the charger go to device maintenance and open battery menu and see if it say charging via AC or USB if while us8ng the original charger it shows Chaging via USB then certainly its the port that has gone faulty..
Hit thanks if helped
Hello everyone! Though its not the right place to ask the question but I have been seeking solution to my problem from months. Long time before, my Galaxy Note II started to behave differently. Whenever I charged it completely, the phone worked normally till 75% to 80% and all of sudden a =low battery warning indication appears and phone proceeds to shut down. I tried changing ROM and calibrating the battery again but nothing worked. Finally I replaced the battery with a new one and also clean flashed another ROM in a hope to see if the problem is gone or still there. But to my surprise the problem is still intact. Now, when I turn on the phone the battery is 90% and when I keep using it, it drains normally, but as soon it reaches round about 80%, it turns off randomly. When I turn the phone back on the battery is still at the same percentage level at which is turns off. I believe there is not an issue with the battery. Please help me what to do, I am using TWRP recovery that doesn't gives the battery stats wipe option too. Should I flash a new ROM again? I would greatly appreciate if someone please helps me in sorting this problem.
What I have already done!
1. Replaced the battery
2. Changed the ROM
3. Re-calibrated the battery

I have noticed the same issue, I think. I suspect it is a general bug.
Guys, try charging your phone while in Android. When it reads 100%, switch off your device. Either leave the charge cable attached or reattach it after you have switched off. Now wait for the off-line charging icon to appear. Unless I'm mistaken, the percentage won't correspond with whatever your phone reports while your in Android. If Android says 100%, this will be a lower number. And off-line charging will keep on charging until you reach 100%.

Sorry for the late response. Internet finished, had to wait until the renewal date. During this time, i wiped the rom and re-installed it (Khongloi V11). Since there was no internet, i didnt sign in any accounts, Switched off the location. The phone surprisingly took 3 days before reaching 0.
Indeed, it says USB Charging 6hrs. I sometimes keep plugging and unplugging, it changes to A/C 2hrs.
I have this problem too. But I change batt_capacity_max to 1000, phone on 100% phone off 100%. If we recharge to full it will return to the same state (phone on 100, phone off ~80) so i need to change again. I don't know if this destroy my battery life ? I don't know why. I thought I'm the only 1 who have this problem? (sorry for my bad english)
I think this may be a software/firmware problem, not a problem with the battery.

I figured that was the problem but i tried it with three different roms (Khongloi V11, Final, Stock).
Maybe it's some kind of battery protection thing created when your battery is old or something?

The various ROMs may all use the same battery raportage code, which doesn't account for this discrepancy. After all, most ROMs are just fancy reskins of stock Android.
That said, maybe Samsung support can shed some light on what's going on.
On a side note? Is there anyone who reads this thread, whose reported battery charge (in percentages) is the same in Android as when the device is switched off and charging?
So... any solutions?
