There is a short review of the Targus Universal Wireless Keyboard on Geekzone . The unit works with either PocketPCs or PalmOS PDAs via the IR port. The article does not answer the number one question I have though: "Does it work with the XDA?"
Note the second picture in the article; Notice (1) the mouse, and (2) the adjustable IR xceiver. The built-in mouse seems pretty neat -- I don't know how useful it actually is, but if it eliminates the need to use the stylus when using the keyboard, that could be huge! Also, I would think that having an adjustable IR xceiver (2) would make IR operation with the XDA better because of the odd placement of the XDA's IR port.
This unit is $79.95 at my local Best Buy, and $49.95 with free shipping from Amazon.
Can anyone comment on the operation of this device with the XDA?
Donovan.
The keyboard is excellent. Mouse works great...lets you move around on the screen and click with a mouse pointer. Keyboard is nice and full sized so easy to type on. The arm does move to adjust to just above the IR port. Very responsive you would never know it was a IR keyboard.
I had a pocketop and sorry - it was just junk not to mention the driver for the XDA. Im running 2003 and love the keyboard. No problems at all. GO FOR IT.
Thx drj. This is just the feedback I was hoping to receive. I'm picking up one on my way home from work!
one thing I shoud mention. Go to Targus.com and download the latest driver for the Pocketpc.com Think the CD version is out of date.
Thx drj. I just spent an hour getting acclimated to my new Targus Universal Wireless keyboard. You are absolutely on point! This unit is amazing. The combination of near-full-size keyboard, "mouse" and function keys really enhances the PocketPC user experience. Even though I am not seeking it, this is very close to a desktop experience; what I am looking for is an accessory that will allow rapid text entry when I need to do a lot of it. I think I've found it. Thx for your input, it's much appreciated.
Donovan.
I wonder why at Amazon, there are only negative reports!! Is it as good as you guys say or should I believe the reports?
Targus has no driver for the XDA. Will the other drivers of the units offered, work with the XDA?
If somebody knows pls. reply.

i just installed the pocket pc 2002 driver / ipaq
and it works great
what i DONT like about is... my ppc has the extended battery, and its too thick for that little hook to hold it.
what it needs is an angled mirror! like i saw on some other design... so that way, even if the IR handle DONT reach it, it will still reflect off the mirror.
but, its a wonderfull product, as close to a full size keyboard as u can get!
There is a driver for O2 XDA. You have to download it off targus.com.
It works great...no conflicts.
Well lets just say I bought a pocketop and it was JUNK. When they released the so called driver for the XDA it was very flakey, I had to hard reset my device to get it back to normal. If they fixed their drivers then maybe it would be an OK input solution. (not great though) But they have 3rd party contractors coding their drivers so no one on staff.
The Targus among other things has an adjustable arm that you move to just over your IR port. As I said have it running on my XDA and WM 2003 and no problems. I do love this keyboard and can take it with me when the XDA2 is here!

What about a sync cable?
Can you have this keyboard working with the device ands till have it attached to a sync/charge cable?
the problem with my current keybaord is I constantly plug it and unplug it in order to transfer test apps over etc.
..Chuck..
well.. with This particular model, yes!
its IR... the pda never have to physicaly connect to nothing!
infact... if u lay them both on a desk... it can be up to 2 feet away from the keyboard.. provided u have the IR transmitter and IR receiver on the pda facing each other.
thats why i was suggesting the mirror thingie... or maybe a bottle of scotch might act like a prizm and reflect the IR in all directions

first... great site. iv learned alot since finding it a week ago
question / idea...
iv seen the pin outs of the connector on the bottom
and i know theres keyboards out there
has anyone considered making a cable to connect a regular PS/2 keyboard to the phone ?
oviously it wouldnt be to practical to carry a full size keyboard with you, but it would be cool at home to enter in phone #s and such, and also theres the new rubber rollup keyboard out now (for some time now)... if u carry a laptop bag, u can throw that in to with u
i may attempt to see if it can be done myself, i have some electrical experience, but maybe someone might be able to find a solution faster / if theres a need
great site.

it's a great idea..I have come across someone who sells a hardware unit connected to a palm pda for use with a regular keyboar on ebay..problem is can't relocate the url.. it's a great idea and feasible go for it..
does it really lacks the IrDA port?
I use the irda port on my wizard to download my Polar Data.
Yup, it really does lack IR.

Sucks big time. I used my Trinity as a universal remote. I hate it when they replace specs instead of just upping them.
Cutting reduces cost, size and use of battery life.
Most people didn't use IrDA
maybe you can find one for the SD/IO port ?

Thanks but I don't particularly like the idea of stuff sticking out of my sd ports. Besides, (micro)SDIO products are few and far between. They never should have removed it because infrared is still used in a number of different appliances which could double your phone as a remote control. As far as I know, it doesn't take up battery life whilst idle (unless you set it to constantly watch for incoming beams?)...
I sure hope their next phone reintroduces it.

Don't like stuff hanging out of mine either!
Sadly, I doubt very much you will see it return in future devices. The TyTn had one, but it's range was veeeery low, just a couple of feet. I have the feeling it's like floppy discs getting as rare as hens teeth.

Welcome "Industry trends"
Some fool decided that IrDA is a no-go and should be removed from laptops and hence from PDAs since Bluetooth has 100% penetration. Outlook for this was 2007, then pushed to 2008 and now they are talking about 2009... I know my company sells chips with IrDA support for laptops coming out on 2008/9... there is still demand but probably the chipset used for the P4550 does not support FIR (IrDA) anymore...
I am in search for a new device to replace my BlueAngel and have had a look at the TyTn II as well as the P6500 but I am very disapointed to find out that the IrDA is no longer available in the new HTC units. I am using the Ir for several devices like my other phones, Polar sports watch, dive computer etc. so for me the Ir is an essential feature.
Are there any way to get this working, I have not found any external units to connect to the TyTn via mini USB. (Even though I would hate have to have some contraption hanging out of the device.)
As of now I might start consider leaving the HTC-land after 6 years with their fantastic products.

Just wondering if anyone has found a solution/accessory for this lack of IrDA port? I have a Touch Cruise which also lacks a IRDA (Gee thanks HTC). I need to get it to talk to my Polar S625x watch. Anyone found a miniUSB IRDA device?
Thanks
OK, I have read a bunch of posts on the lack of IR abilities and how the Tilt uses BT to beam. I just sent a file from the Tilt to my Hermes via BT and it took about 10 seconds. I enabled IR on both devices and aligned the IR port on the Herm towards the left side of the Tilt and it gave the option to beam, I beamed the same size file and it took less than a second. I am not sure I understand, I repeated the test 3 times with the same result. Any ideas?
has anyone tryed this?

Its a sd to microsd port so you can fit into your sdio irda into your phone. its gona be pretty big but at least that is an option...
Assuming the USB input for the touchscreen works with the Athena, this could be a nice in-car dash accessory. It would make GPS/map use really sweet, and phone dialing easier. $195.
Anyone want to test it?
http://www.digital4cheap.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/SFV/31341/vpid/3917049/vpcsid/0/rid/124129
that would be pretty cool
I keep talking myself out of buying it. At $195 its almost cheap enough to get even if the touchscreen part didn't work with the Athena... but then I would talk myself into getting a mini-PC, and at that point I could have just bought a cheap laptop.

as long as the usb output act's like a standard pc mouse it works. and thats where the problem starts the manual (see the grey box at right side at the bottom) says somthing from 'install the usb drivers first!' so i think there is no luck with these thing. elsewhise a cool idea as an addon in the car.
greet's mad
I figured it would come down to a driver issue for the touchscreen. Still an off-chance it might work out-of-the-box, or that the company offers a WM driver.
for me, i think that would be a bit expensive, i bought a car headrest monitor at Eonon.com, which just need $175USD!
hello
please help me to have a mouse cursor like Omnia mouse on Xperia X1 !!!!
i now it's only a software , but i can't find it !!!
thanks a lot !!
i tried out an Omnia before getting the xperia and the 'mouse' option was one thing i liked about it. so i'll second that request.
+1 on that request. Might be a way to port over the dll and drivers from the Omnia or Epix.
would lik this also
Yeah, i'm jumping on the bandwagon too.
I just know about this programm. But it's shareware .
I just tried it. I don't like it. I would like some diagonal movement of the mouse, but is it possible?
i swear i saw an app like this a few months ago (forgot its name) being developed on this forum, at that stage there was no optical joystick function but the were planning it for the next updated, who knows what stage it is at now???
I found another app that might fit the bill:
http://www.teksoftco.com/index.php?section=usbinput
I haven't tried it, but it looks promising. It gives us mouse and keyboard support. And it has two versions, one for connecting via our unit's USB slot, and one via Bluetooth.
Based on the videos I've seen on its website, it didn't show it in landscape mode, so I don't know if it can do things flawlessly in this mode. Not sure how stable it is too.
What I really want is a universal USB capability for the Xperia wherein we can connect any input device, or flash/thumb drives or external hard disks . Is there such a thing? If there is, kindly point me to the right direction!

If, for example there is a USB host driver available, can it make the Xperia's USB slot into a host? The reason I asked is because I just googled and found someone who has sort of produced these drivers, check it out:
http://forum.ppcwarez.org/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=58813
The original poster was the one who packaged it, and it seems to be freeware. The thing I'm not so clear about is that he mentioned that his unit is a Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox 560N, and that it shipped with USB host capability. I don't know if he was actually saying that he has extracted the necessary drivers from his unit or that a unit with host capability is a requirement for this app...hmmmm... Well, I haven't tried it yet because it scares me. Anyone brave enough to try it and report on the findings?
we now the X1 and Omnia has a trackpad for scrolling !!!
omnia has a software to turn this trackpad into a virtual mouse , i need this software to turn my X1 trackpad into a virtual mouse like omina !!!
i really need it , please help me !!!
thanks a lot !!!
hmmm
Not sure why this hasn't been done yet? I think it would be great to have the optical pad function as a mouse for quick one handed use...

Can you please explain...how would a mouse function provide a "quick one handed use"?
It's always faster to simply press the icon on the touchscreen. Also, using the D-PAD to select is faster than trying to hit the right icon with a thumb on a small optical pad.
I never had the use for an optical mouse for the time I use the Xperia and I really doubt it would be an effort.
This should be no offense, it's just my experience.
it is faster, because to touch something on the screen, it is way more comfortable to hold the device in the left hand and use your right hand fingers, if you need to be precise. with the optical mouse you can position the cursor almost pixel-accurate. it is very useful, but i missed a regular dpad on the i780.
a regulard dpad + mouse would be best.
u need to hands to use ur device???

That's exactly what I wanted to say with my post.
I hold the phone in my hand and touch the screen with the same hand's thumb. Works fine, works exactly and I never use the stylus and therefore I have no need for a mouse either
I don't understand why you who don't need/want a mousecursor post in this thread.
I myself would like the option to use a mousecursor. Maybe I won't use it, maybe I will.
More features= More fun...

OMG ... you sound like a marketing guy. more features = more fun. look @ twitter, less features -> way more fun
but for real, it would only make things more difficult. if u are unable to place your finger/stylus on an marked spot, then imagine how complicated it will become for you if u have to place a mousecursor with the optical pad
during the time u spent to place the cursor over a certain spot, i would have allready taken out my stylus, touched the spot and insterted it back sicne the optical pad is somewaht limited.
Is there a possible way to connect a mouse to the pda? I hate when I try to play a online game the screen keeps sliding instead of acting as a mouse. Is there a way how I can use a mouse?
hopefully I'll get as much as answers as I do as views.
I'm interested in that too!
There's something called Teksoft USBInput - I just found it yesterday, but haven't tried it yet.
If you can get the right cable adapters put together, I'd imagine that it would work.
Yes, I agree with bdusmc! I too found USBInput not that long ago and have installed the software on my PPC. Recently though, I found the part I was looking for on ebay ($1 and free shipping) and ordered it. I assume it will be arriving soon and I anticipate seeing if it works. I'll let you know if it works, okay? I'm really hoping that it works because well, it would be amazing. Sure you have a slide out keyboard but hey, I have a full sized USB keyboard. WHAT NOW!? lol Ultimate friend pwnge will occur I'm sure. However, if I had the new keyboard from FastFingerKeyboards it would make things more practical then fun....
i think it should be possible and awesome
Sorry for the late response but I've been waiting on the replacement part. You see, it did not connect using the first mini USB to USB Female adapter I purchased nor on the second one I received just today. At this point I can not concluded if it is the adapter or another problem. Anyways, you're welcome to try it and let me know if you can get it to work... Maybe BlueInput would work. The sad thing about that is it uses bluetooth which will decrease the battery life rapidly and bluetooth keyboards are more expensive. Oh well!
