Arrogant Microsoft knows better and removes synchronization over Wi-Fi possibility in ActiveSync 4.0 and Windows Mobile 5.0 - more information available
May 23, 2005 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)]
Competition is adding features in new versions of mobile platforms. Microsoft is removing some features.
We have mentioned it already previously, that no longer ActiveSync over Wi-Fi will be possible in Windows Mobile 5.0, and now there is some addtional background information available about this serious mistake of Microsoft with regard to Wi-Fi synchronization:
the wifi/ethernet sync capabilities had to be removed in ActiveSync 4.0 for security reasons. When decision was made, there was plenty of disappointment internally and a number meetings where smart folks tried to find ways to keep the feature in without risking security and without slipping the schedule commitments we had made. Unfortunately, that ended up not being possible for AS 4.0.
To read more on this topic (rather lame justifications from Microsoft employees) click here.
Conclusion: again Microsoft behaves in a totally arrogant and disrespecting (for end customers) way: removes the feature that was heavily used by many people. While other corporations are innovating strongly (example: next version of iTunes will include native support for Podcasting, while next Windows Media Player and ActiveSync will not support it), Microsoft is removing features and not innovating at all - just imitating features that others had 2-3 years ago (as it is with camera API in Windows Mobile 5.0). Clearly Microsoft needs some urgent changes because something is wrong there.
This is the only reason i'm not upgrading to WM5...
WM5 needs AS4 and AS4 does not support sync over wifi, this is the feature i love most in my ppc, getting my mails, documents... everything while sitting in a meeting room.
hell... i need some alternate to activesync b4 i upgrade to wm5
My guess is that it won't be long before some third party is out with a solution that fixes that problem (fake serial driver accessible via WLAN or something).
I really cannot believe this!! I had a Himalaya and was happy with it. I bought a Wizard now for good money, just to have WLAN/WIFI and - I swear to god - in order to use it for Activesync!! I had a WLAN SD Card in my old Himalaya and it worked FINE!! Damn!
This news are almost a year old

Does anyone have a link for this download? I have the new AT&T Tilt working with BB Connect, but cannot find the download to the BlackBerry Application Suite for Windows Mobile 6.
Don't think the app suite is released as of yet.
Why would you want blackberry suite?
As mentioned above, the Blackberry Application Suite does not exist. Its never been released. not sure if it ever will be.
But if you are looking for Blakcberry Connect for WM, that does exist. See my post on this thread. And in the future, you might try searching some.

HI, I have been battling with BBC against to our BES due to policies and I heard from a very reliable source that the product will be ready for our deployment Q32008... So its is coming and I think will support the encryption etc and will be support friendlier since the interface is a propiraty BB interface. Plus, there aren't many security risks around virus etc since it will be a virtaul application suite that supports any BB application and doesn't integrate to VM mail client etc.... So, you can have your WM as a standalone OS once you minimize the BAS... These are great benefits for enterprise adoption and really simplifies the risks around the device support when compared to BBC running on any WM device (or symbian etc)...
as of 2009, it hasnt been released. At least its been showcased and that bring a hope for it to be soon.
it been 2 years since when RIM Compeny said they gonna release it but they haven't released it yet!
its a vaporware.. playing on our patience...
it would make WM so much more powerful... and blackberry so much more popular... when will the two organisations ever realise it?

Hi experts here,
I bitterly miss my good old active sync from WM6.5.
With it I could USB-sync locally pretty everything from my own Outlook without any external provider eating my horribly expensive roaming airtime.
I bitterly miss the ablity to use my phone as a USB-stick without any driver on the host.
I bitterly miss the abilty to use my phone as a UMTS modem:
Has anyone developed a 3rd party app (or several ones) to reclaim these essential features?
I hate M$ for having dropped active sync from WP7 (to please the operators?)

Just learned that all Windows Phone 8 have limitation in BT, HID tools e.g. an external keyboard, cannot be connected. What reason MS has for such a thing is not explainable. I want to use a foldable keyboard but cannot. Is here someone who knows to fix the BT stack? We all should complain by MS. the same with the weekly calendar and notes or to does. I like my Samsung ATIV S but not this nonsense from the software - OS builders. In which world do they live?

We feel your pain. I spent the time to explain the BT stack issue in your other threads about this same topic. I also included links to the Survey MS site to add your votes so that this will be included.
I can't imagine we will have to wait much longer for them to accept it. Who knows, so irritating to not have a keyboard.
Microsoft ran out of time when releasing WP, that's why so many features are missing.

MS on WP8 updated the BT stacks that devs had access to and simply left one of the key six out. Do we know that they ran out of time, because it certainly seems like they just don't know if they want to support it, vs not having time for it...
