Got My New MDA Vario (TMO) - Now to Upgrade, Have Questions - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

My K-Jam / MDA Vario is two hours old but damn, she's fine ! I see about the speed thing but it's not that obtrusive. I understand the WM 5 thing about loading the programs from ROM into RAM to execute but I have questions later.Given the other integrated features I like, fine compromise. Now on to the topic at hand:
Bought this unit from importgsm.com for US$589.99 (sweet). It's T-Mobile MDA Vario from Germany so all manuals, CDs, etc are in German. Not too worry, lot's of English PDF manuals, start up docs on the web. Have done my first AS 4.1 sync, no problems. Installed a few programs so far, no problems.
Had to checked for EDGE in Austin, TX so set up an APN connection of internet3.voicestream.com and times connect speeds at 81.6Kbps (10KBps) using www.texan.com/speed.htm. This seems higher than my GPRS connect specs I had recorded on my XDA II at 45Kbps - 52Kbps.
Questions:
A Qtek ROM/Radio was loaded on this unit even though it's TMO. ImportGSM customer service says it's a better ROM at the moment for Wizard units that they stock. The i-mates are hard to come by he said.
1) How do I check that the speed slow down items, I've read about (virus scanner, etc) are installed and/or running? Then, naturally, how to eliminate them.
2) Here's my ROM/Radio specs for Qtek:
ROM: 1.1.7.5 dated 9/22/05
Radio: 1.1.10.0
Protocol: 4.0.13.16
ExtROM: 1.1.7.105
Given that, what's the XDA communities recommedation on upgrading ROM/Radio? Is this an "old" ROM/Radio"? Should I wait longer to upgrade? Should I go with i-mate's latest, do a Qtek upgrade, use TMO ... ??? Thoughts gentlemen?
I'm comfortable with EXE upgrades but not RAR upgrades but could, in a pinch, do it.

ExtROM for 1.40 on T-Mobile UK MDA III

I've got used to my T-Mobile UK ROM 1.06, with album, PDF viewer, etc. I'm looking at the new ROMs and see i-mate, Qtek, but not T-Mobile. Which ExtROMs/patches would I pick up to make up for the 1.06.160 T-Mobile stuff?
In fact, I only need to improve my BT connectivity with the Motorola HS850 headset. I've went ahead and upgraded to Radio 1.13 and BT 3900. There's still static/disconnects. I wonder, would BT connectivity benefit in any way from upgrading the ROM to 1.40?
A few questions while on this -- GetDeviceData.exe is not working for me, no output in \Windows. I also wanted to backup ROM on SD card, as mentioned here, but bootloader doesn't give me a USB device option... And what size SD do I need -- is it to be overwritten completely, or the stuff already on it is preserved?
I think it's for the best that it didn't go through right away, as I need to evaluate necessity of all this. Living for hard resets is tough. I wonder if there's a wiki on preserving everything in a most reliable way, and setting it back up automagically.
If you're only after BT quality, then stay as you are. 3900 is the 'best of a bad bunch' available at the moment.
Which particular 1.40 ROM/ExtROM(s) do folks use for T-Mobile UK MDA III? (T-MOB005 carrier, originally 1.06 ROM/1.06.160 ExtROM...)
I'm stuck with official t-mo rom as I need blackberry.

A few 'noob' questions...

OK, I'm waiting on my XDA IIs (Blue Angel) arriving tomorrow and have a few questions before I dive right in!
(Before I go any further please note that I have spent the last few days delving into the forum and wiki on this site but just need some clarification.)
1. Can I rebrand an O2 XDA IIs to Vodafone VPx/VP 1620 (i.e change ROMs)?
2. If yes, how, and if not can I use all my Vodafone service (GPRS etc) on an O2 braded phone?
3. I have the latest ROM downloaded from O2 just in case mine needs it on arrival, will this enable the pairing to two BT devices (Headset/GPS) or will I need to update the BT stack as per the other 3500/3900 thread?
4. Can I expect any issues with Tomtom 5, or should this work OK if I don't start playing with the ROMs too much!
Thanks in advance for any advice, and I'm looking forward to trying WM5 once I pluck up the courage
Moved to BA section from general
1) Your rom has 3 parts (which you know since you read wiki) the branding is in the extrom. You want the phone to act like a BA from a different carrier then use that extrom.
2) By reading 1 and reading cooking in the extrom kitchen on wiki
3) Bt is a mess and part of the CE rom, if you have the latest rom you will have the latest BT Stack. As for pairing well have fun. There is enough info on the site to confuse you.
4) Tom Tom works on a BA as per there site.
Thanks for that... I think
So, CE ROM as standard, use Voda ExtROM for their branding, and hope for the best with BT
Sound about right?
Better get into the 'kitchen' then, eh!

Looks like the same ROM that was leaked a few days ago. This contains the same Ext ROM that I used to create the Mr. Clean AKU 2.3 T-Mobile UK ROM.
I've not yet tried upgrading the ROM on my UK Vario, but I guess now is the time to think about it. I want to keep my stored SMS and MMS messages, but everything else on the machine I'll probably clean-install and re-tweak as necessary once I get the new ROM flashed. I've got a good idea of what I do and don't want in my Vario after 5 months use, and I guess now would be a great time to get rid of all the junk that's probably clogging up the registry by now.
A couple of questions:
I know I can make a backup copy of the current ROM onto a clean SD card, but can I back it up onto a partially used card (i.e. using the file system, rather than raw data blocks).
I backup my Vario regularly using SPB Backup. Can the SPB Restore utility restore just my SMS/MMS messages (including user-created folders) without reinstalling anything else, so I can keep a nice clean machine?
The UK T-Mobile release is 2.0, whereas "Mr Clean ROM" is 2.3. I'm guessing 2.3 is better, but what am I likely to lose (if anything) that's on the T-Mobile ROM? Is the stereo bluetooth headset facility on both? I've already removed most of the obvious T-Mobile pink stuff, and put in a better dialler skin, etc. In fact, I don't really want T-Mobile's dialler skin at all, as I've been trying to get rid of their modified history & speeddial icons for ages!
Finally, what about reinstalling things like TomTom - will doing so remove my user-defined favourite place settings, etc? (my maps are stored on SD card)
Thanks for any advice, I'm a little nervous here...
Andre
^^^ Same questions and concerns for me.
Also, I flashed my T-Mobile UK MDA from original ROM to Qtek 2.17 ROM a month ago. I SIM & CID unlocked it in the process using Lokiwiz 0.2b - do I need to prep the phone with Lokiwiz 0.3 before flashing the MDA to keep it unlocked?
Cheers in advance.

Things I've noticed so far:
1)
The Comms screen has been radically changed, adding a "push" button (deactivated on my uk t-mobile vario for some reason) and another button that looks like a ppc to ppc connection.
2)
The battery icon has moved from the bottom right corner to the top right corner, on the top panel, (where the time used to be) and has turned an ugly shade of green. I presume it goes yellow -> red when on low power.
3)
In the programs, something called "SAP Settings" has been added.
It's used for remote sim access apparently.
4)
"Running Programs" is now a program and can be seen on the start menu
6)
"Comm manager is now a program that appears on the "running programs" list.
5)
When starting up, it displays the t-mobile screen followed by the WINDOWS MOBILE screen instead of just the t-mobile screen.
Finally, this could because of a cleaner registry and stuff, but it does feel somewhat more efficient.
So would the early adopters say it is better or worse than the mighty summiter/Mr Clean (Uk) versions
Bhayani
Right now I like the Mr Clean version better, but I only had that on for a weekend and the new one has only been on for an hour or so.
Personally after a day with it I'm tempted to go back to the qtek 2.17 rom
Hi can someone post up the MMS settings as I didn't note them down when I updated the rom - doh! UK of course.

Thats interesting.... Im using a Qtek 2.17 ROM at the moment and am considering upgrading, but Im holding back at the moment. What dont you like?
Bad news here. I've been running the Mr Clean Comes to London ROM for a few days with no problems at all and before that one of the Qtek ones and the unit never reset itself which it had ben doing with the T-Mobile ROM from the start of the year. I am happy with the performance of the new T-Mobile ROM after installing it yesterday but overnight it went back to soft resetting itself as all of my open programs were shut down this morning. Also when I turned it on the screen wasn't responding so I ended up doing another reset.
I'll leave it over the weekend but it looks like the spontaneous reset problem hasn't been resolved. Strange that T-Mobile can't fix that but all the other ROMs seem to have it licked!

Of course it could be something T-Mobile has put in that's causing it. I'm thinking Mr Clean is the way to go...

WM6.1 upgrade HTC site says not suitable for my TYTN ii

Looking for the upgrade for my TYTN ii to WM6.1 but on the HTC site it says
"Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device"
It's currently running
WM6 pro
CE OS 5.2.1620 (build 18125.0.4.2)
My ROM Version is 1.81.707.0
ROM date 09/05/07
Radio Version 1.27.12.11
I think it is an Asian import as it had Mapking on it originally
Any help greatly appreciated
Yeh i get this message also, and my TYTN is unbranded and unlocked direct from HTC.
It is annoying as how can this be the case?
Regards
dmgcm
Found the correct upgrade for my version of TYTN 2
Hi,
If anyone was having the same problem upgrading to WM6.1 for the unbranded Asian version of the HTC.
I found the correct upgrade, just goto HTC.com and choose country of origin (top righthand corner) to Singapore and then follow link to software download section to find upgrade.
Only negative so far is camera takes photos but i cannot see anything in the viewfinder.....time to scout around the forums again.
Cheers Tony
why not flash to a custom rom like i and hundreds more on this forum have done?
I have an AT&T Tilt, Imported, considering AT&T aren't even in Australia i don't think.
I'm running the HyperDragon III Jade+Manila 2D rom on my device, which is a WM6.1 rom and my device could not be going any better. everything is very fast and smooth.
i also got the Omnia Direct 3D Drivers. Duke Nukem 3d runs @ absolute minimum of 16fps if there's lots of explosions and stuff... 35 - 40fps normally.
The TyTn II is an incredible phone with unlimited potential at the moment.
Did you select the file "HTC TyTN II - Windows MobileĀ® 6.1 Professional Upgrade"? This worked for me. After having installed WM 6.1, when I try to download the other file "HTC TyTN II - Operating System [ROM] Update", I also get the message "Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device.
Problems changing OS to wm6.1 o english
TYTYN II changing OS wm6.1 to english
Today I tried to change my tytyn ii language from Norwegian to english. In order to do that I used first flashing with spl 3.29. TyTYN-2 flashed well and then started loading kaiser duttys WM6.1 english, after loading almost 50% it stopped doing giving message communication errors. I tried several times after restoring connection, but it stopped everytime at 0% loading, giving the message incorrect communication. Active sync does not work any more, only usb.
The mobile screen is showing three colours with words at the right corner RUUNBH
andat the left KAIS130, SPL-3.29.0000
CPLD-8
Please help me, what steps should I take
Thanks for your attention.
Regards
Asim
It is a version problem!
Guys,
It is the version which could be the problem. Mine is 1.81 version with 1.27 radio version. If you find the kaiser rom updates page on this portal, you will see that wm6.1 is available for verison 3. something not for 1.8... Although I will give a go with the rom update I have downloaded from somewhere else
cheers

Slow Data Speeds on Tilt

I'm new to all this phone modding and such so I'm here to look for some help from all the PDA phone gurus here. I'm handy around computers but never flashed a phone before. Not afraid to trying.
I'm on Rogers with my AT&T Tilt in Vancouver, Canada and my data is extremely slow. I picked it up a used and it already has another ROM on it:
ROM version: dutty's WM6.1 WWE
ROM date: 04/29/08
Radio version: 1.65.14.06
Protocol version: 25.81.40.02W
My original Rogers TYTN has good 3G speeds but using the same SIM card in the Tilt yield extremely slow results, 402kb/s down and 55kb/s up.
Additionally, I can't get my outlook to connect to my mail server. Had no issues with that on my original TYTN either.
Welcome to XDA. Since you aren't afraid to flash, go ahead and start reading here:

There is all the info you need to successfully flash, upgrade, etc for your phone.
This is also a handy checklist to make sure you're not missing anything when flashing:

Thanks for the links!
Looks like a bit of reading for me tonight. Can anyone suggest a good ROM and radio that would play nice with Rogers?
