A few 'noob' questions... - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

OK, I'm waiting on my XDA IIs (Blue Angel) arriving tomorrow and have a few questions before I dive right in!
(Before I go any further please note that I have spent the last few days delving into the forum and wiki on this site but just need some clarification.)
1. Can I rebrand an O2 XDA IIs to Vodafone VPx/VP 1620 (i.e change ROMs)?
2. If yes, how, and if not can I use all my Vodafone service (GPRS etc) on an O2 braded phone?
3. I have the latest ROM downloaded from O2 just in case mine needs it on arrival, will this enable the pairing to two BT devices (Headset/GPS) or will I need to update the BT stack as per the other 3500/3900 thread?
4. Can I expect any issues with Tomtom 5, or should this work OK if I don't start playing with the ROMs too much!
Thanks in advance for any advice, and I'm looking forward to trying WM5 once I pluck up the courage

Moved to BA section from general
1) Your rom has 3 parts (which you know since you read wiki) the branding is in the extrom. You want the phone to act like a BA from a different carrier then use that extrom.
2) By reading 1 and reading cooking in the extrom kitchen on wiki
3) Bt is a mess and part of the CE rom, if you have the latest rom you will have the latest BT Stack. As for pairing well have fun. There is enough info on the site to confuse you.
4) Tom Tom works on a BA as per there site.

Thanks for that... I think
So, CE ROM as standard, use Voda ExtROM for their branding, and hope for the best with BT
Sound about right?
Better get into the 'kitchen' then, eh!

SX66 Rom Kitchen

I'm looking to buy an SX66. I had a few questions:
1. Is there are ROM Kitchen to cook an updated ROM for the SX66?
2. What is the latest ROM version for the SX66?
3. If I buy an unlocked Cingular version SX66, what problems could I expect using it with T-Mobile or other carrier?
TIA,
Joe

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
I'll sort through your links and see if I can make out the answers.
Honestly piecing together a ROM is a bit beyond me, but I'll see what I can understand.
It was much easier with the old ROM Kitchens.
Thank you again for your help.

Great info in these links.
Thanks again

Happy reading!
I am thinking about buying an unlocked Cingular version of this phone.
I would use it for my T-Mobile service and would use it on asian carriers while travelling. vDo you know of any problem in the cingular rom that will cause me problems with email or gprs on other systems (assuming the phone is indeed unlocked)
Can you give me your opinion?
Thank you
Sorry can't answer dont know anything about that device, have no link to web page. But if its the same as the siemens as in a GSM phone you will be fine. As or the rest well yo can cook it.
Hey Joe, I bought the SX66 from a Cingular store a few weeks ago to use on T-Mobile. It's been working fine, GPRS included.
Out of the box, I had to remove the Cingular stuff and set up the GPRS connection manually (I just changed the APN to wap.voicestream.com). After reading the forums here for a while, I installed the Siemens update to 1.33, then I got more creative and installed the Radio ROM 1.10 and cooked up my own ExtROM. If you go this route, look in the Kitchen for T-Mo USA cabs that will set up GPRS and proxy settings for you.
If you need help, PM me. Good luck!

ExtROM for 1.40 on T-Mobile UK MDA III

I've got used to my T-Mobile UK ROM 1.06, with album, PDF viewer, etc. I'm looking at the new ROMs and see i-mate, Qtek, but not T-Mobile. Which ExtROMs/patches would I pick up to make up for the 1.06.160 T-Mobile stuff?
In fact, I only need to improve my BT connectivity with the Motorola HS850 headset. I've went ahead and upgraded to Radio 1.13 and BT 3900. There's still static/disconnects. I wonder, would BT connectivity benefit in any way from upgrading the ROM to 1.40?
A few questions while on this -- GetDeviceData.exe is not working for me, no output in \Windows. I also wanted to backup ROM on SD card, as mentioned here, but bootloader doesn't give me a USB device option... And what size SD do I need -- is it to be overwritten completely, or the stuff already on it is preserved?
I think it's for the best that it didn't go through right away, as I need to evaluate necessity of all this. Living for hard resets is tough. I wonder if there's a wiki on preserving everything in a most reliable way, and setting it back up automagically.
If you're only after BT quality, then stay as you are. 3900 is the 'best of a bad bunch' available at the moment.
Which particular 1.40 ROM/ExtROM(s) do folks use for T-Mobile UK MDA III? (T-MOB005 carrier, originally 1.06 ROM/1.06.160 ExtROM...)
I'm stuck with official t-mo rom as I need blackberry.

Got My New MDA Vario (TMO) - Now to Upgrade, Have Questions

My K-Jam / MDA Vario is two hours old but damn, she's fine ! I see about the speed thing but it's not that obtrusive. I understand the WM 5 thing about loading the programs from ROM into RAM to execute but I have questions later.Given the other integrated features I like, fine compromise. Now on to the topic at hand:
Bought this unit from importgsm.com for US$589.99 (sweet). It's T-Mobile MDA Vario from Germany so all manuals, CDs, etc are in German. Not too worry, lot's of English PDF manuals, start up docs on the web. Have done my first AS 4.1 sync, no problems. Installed a few programs so far, no problems.
Had to checked for EDGE in Austin, TX so set up an APN connection of internet3.voicestream.com and times connect speeds at 81.6Kbps (10KBps) using www.texan.com/speed.htm. This seems higher than my GPRS connect specs I had recorded on my XDA II at 45Kbps - 52Kbps.
Questions:
A Qtek ROM/Radio was loaded on this unit even though it's TMO. ImportGSM customer service says it's a better ROM at the moment for Wizard units that they stock. The i-mates are hard to come by he said.
1) How do I check that the speed slow down items, I've read about (virus scanner, etc) are installed and/or running? Then, naturally, how to eliminate them.
2) Here's my ROM/Radio specs for Qtek:
ROM: 1.1.7.5 dated 9/22/05
Radio: 1.1.10.0
Protocol: 4.0.13.16
ExtROM: 1.1.7.105
Given that, what's the XDA communities recommedation on upgrading ROM/Radio? Is this an "old" ROM/Radio"? Should I wait longer to upgrade? Should I go with i-mate's latest, do a Qtek upgrade, use TMO ... ??? Thoughts gentlemen?
I'm comfortable with EXE upgrades but not RAR upgrades but could, in a pinch, do it.
Craig

Newbie......want most stable 2003SE for QTEK 9090

At the moment I hate my 1 week old QTEK 9090.
To enable GPRS I normally have to reboot.
Sometimes to get Wifi and BT working I have to reboot.
GPRS drops out during a phone call
Sometimes I have to reboot when there is no sound at all on the device. Just no sound at all.
I have had it a week. Probably had to reboot it at least 3 times a day and the reboot is LONG!
Wow such a good concept let down by a HUGE number of bugs
What version rom and radio does your 9090 use? (start menu>settings>device information)
check here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Upgrades
for latest official rom release by your phones manufacturer. Possibly an upgrade is beneficial! Either that, or your phone may have hardware issues. Check your service provider for repair/rma services.
Good luck!
Thanks for that.
I will check. One issue I have a work around for....
I only lose sound when I close down Windows Media Player before I stop the music. Stop it first and then close and all is fine. That is a start.
I wish the ROM upgrades were simpler like on my Treo 650.....upgrade does a backup, flashes the new ROM and then brings back the data....
I found my device and rom on that link ta. So does that mean I have the latets for my device....
This is exactly my 9090:
Qtek WWE OP ID 1.40.00 1.40.147 1.12.00
Protocol version 1337.42
So I must have the latest ROM for my device...ripper.
Rom
Yeah you have the latest rom. when i 1st got my qtek i had some strange issues as well. what i ended up doing was to install a different rom (downgrade) and then install back to my rom (latest version). Hey presto my pda was running much smother.
Take your time to read all the info on the forum and most of all read wiki!! It takes some time to get used to wm2003se if your switching from palm. Have fun!!!
Thanks.
I have used many PPC devices as well. Last one was AXIM X50V. Before that was IPAQ 2210, IPAQ 1930.......
From the 2210 onwards everything was nice and stable.
Just this device.....!!
If I could get it to reliably start up GPRS and wireless every time I would be fine. BT is not such an issue.
Now I have solved my sound problem that is excellent.
good bye wm2003se
I will be really honest with you!!! when i was using my pda with wm2003se i had to soft reset my device 5-6 times a day....wifi being the biggest problem. needles to say it was critical to have a good backup software (Sprite). after being really frustrated i found this site....(thanks god)....know i use wm5 and guess what after 8 weeks i have not had to soft reset my device once. wm5 at the moment is not perfect but for me its stable and quick enough.
Cool....so moving my QTEK 9090 to WM5 what should I look out for? What are the issues? Will I get anything else? Lose anything?
Stability is 100% key for, but in terms of features, WM2003SE has everything i need. It just doesn't work all of the time.
What WM5 ROM do you recommend?
Oops I see Ivan....got a link?
So what is the best procedure to do the backup?
Can I easily go back to the original ROM?
Ivan 4.3
it really depends how you use your pda and what kind of functionality you want. for me speed and stability are essential. i dont use blue tooth to much just to transfer data...(no headset). as all users of wm5 will tell you there are pros and cons with each wm5 rom. my advice is to read the forums and pick a version that best suits your needs. in any case you will have to do some hacks to really bring the best out of your device on wm5. see my sig for what i have installed.
forgot to answer your question. to downgrade your device is much easier than to upgrade. before you go down this road please READ wiki carefully!!!

Help Improve My XDA2i and Wi-Fi Problem

Hi
I havent performed any upgrades to my XDA2i (official or otherwise) for at least 3 years - are there any upgrades I should consider?
Here is my Device Info
ROM Version : 1.11.00 WWE
ROM Date : 01/27/05
Radio Version : 1.00.00
Protocol Version : 1337.39
ExtROM Version : [THIS IS BLANK]
Model Number : PH10C
Also, I am unable to connect to WiFi with my XDAIIi
The device finds wifi signals and sometimes will make a connection - but when I try and open a webpage I get a screen showing "IIS7" and nothing else.
Here are my settings for WiFi :
Network Card Connects to tiacxwin Campatible Wireless Ethernet (for both The Internet and Work).
Power Save slider is set for Best Performance.
Thanks for any help and advice !!!
Paul
I am in a similar position Paul.
I have been given a 02 XDAll by my company to use for recording surveys.
Its bog standard like yours.
I'd really like to upgrade it but the problem is there is almost too much written about it on these forums .Most of it is so old and out of date that all the links are broken. Its hard work trawling through it.
What is needed is a simple basic upgrading overview listing all the options but I suppose everyone has moved on to more recent PDA's and are no longer interested in these
I've posted a similar request in the Himilayer section .Maybe we can share what we find
Nick
Nick, do you have a Himalaya or an Alpine? PH10B or PH10C?
The Alpine is stuck on WM2003, perfectly good for its task just not upgradeable to WM5 or WM6.
As for customising it realy depends what you are looking for.
Hi DeeDee thank you for responding. I feel guilty hyjacking Paul's thread.
Mine is a Himalaya 10B
with following spec
02 XDAll
2Gb SD card
Rom 1.72.00WWE
Date03/15/04
Radio 1.17.04
ext Rom 1.72.18.1
Ram 128Mb
Model PH10B
I just wanted to improve the Active page if its possible .I cannot read the tiny text so large button icons like the Diamond would be useful
I cannot set the Internet access up either ? have tried for hours.
I have a Netgear Wireless Modem router DG834G but neither the manual or quick guide explain how to set up the XDA .
I have spent several days trawling this site and the net.
Any help appreciated thank you
Nick,
No problem joining in - if we can get the WiFi problem sorted I would be more than happy.
DeeDee,
Should my ExtROM Version be completely blank?
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul
you're up early !
I have used WM5 on an XDA Mini S (Wizard) a couple of years ago. I imagine that most of the current software and apps are written for WM5 orWM6 so it will mean I'll need to upgrade to WM6. Presume that means flashing the Rom which judging by the number of disasters on this forum is not something I'd do lightly.
Particularly as there are virtually no answers to requests for help.
I found a statement last night that basically says unless you are a software developer you arn't welcome on this forum which probably explains the lack of help.
Yours has the 128 Rom as apposed to my 64Mb which is a big advantage. I have gone off the idea of buying a Himalaya or an Alpine as they are too antiquated really which is a shame as I love the build quality and screen size.
I'm going to look for something a bit more contemporary I think . In the mean time I'll enjoy using the works XDA ll
Hi
Flashing the Himalaya to WM5 or WM6 is painless and it has to be said slightly addictive, you will try many ROMs until you find one you like. Think I have tried most of the ROMs for the Himalaya.
The lack of help has NOTHING to do with not being a developer, i'm not one and have had lots of help. The problem is probably due to the lack of people using these PPCs. i have to confess my Himalaya is purely there as something to muck about with, work didn't want it any more. i have a Trinity as primary PPC phone and an Alpine with an application that doesn't work on WM5.
You won't get your Himalaya to connect to your WiFi as it doesn't do WiFi without an add on card.
DeeDee,
Should my (Alpine) ExtROM Version be completely blank?
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul
Can't remember and my Alpine is at home, but i don't think so.

Thankyou DeeDee I appreciate you taking the trouble to answer silly questions by a noob.
I have downloaded and printed out a 140 page manual and there was nothing clear about connecting to wi-fi
If I have to carry this Hima around with me all day I might as well have it working as well as it can.I had intended to purchase a 3g Iphone for myself but now I'm not so sure I might buy a HTC instead if I can find one with 3.5" screen and wi-fi and a reasonable interface like touchflo
Nick
i have to say the smaller screen on my Trinity is perfectly adequate and that the larger form factor of the Alpine/Himalaya means you need a headset/handsfree kit to really use it as a phone.
It's also not pocketable, which my Trinity is, just.
If you can find a decent mobile shop and have a touchy feely sesion with as many as you can.
thanks DeeDee thats excellent advice. Photos never give a good indication of size and ease of use . The size is a bind like you say its heavy and too big for a shirt pocket but it is easier for me to work with using reading glasses.
I got an 02 XDA mini S when they first came out. I found the screen too small and fiddly and it stayed in the box unused for 18 months when I sold it on ebay for nothing so I have learnt my lesson.
DeeDee may I just ask one other question please. I have trawled through the wiki and various other sources but I still haven'y founf an answer to my initial question on the Himalaya board.
Q1 How do you install a new app on the Hima or Alpine ?
Q2. where does it get installed to ?
Today we lost the special survey App again Grrrrrrrrrrrv because the flippin battery went flat.
My boss is hopping mad and blames me !....I blame IT cos they installed it.
There must be somewhere we can install an App to that is non volatile and is not lost every time the battery goes flat.
Presumably the same place that WM2003 is installed ? How is it done ?
To install an app either:
1 - use Active Sync to install it if necessary
2 - if the install is a CAB file copy it to a memory card and then click it on the PPC to run the install.
As for the where it installs, when you run the installer it may ask where you wish to install, either Device/Storage Card. Make sure both batteries are charging. In all honesty it's not your fault that the end users aren't charging their Alpine on a regular basis.
