I have a couple questions about rom upgrading and ext rom - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

ok my questions are
1. when flash my device to a newer rom and i reset it before it installs the ext. rom, does that give me more space on my device or is there always 9 mb designated for the ext rom even if i dont use it.
2. is there a way to create my own extended rom and install it after i do question #1.
sorry if these questions are dumb but its just something ive been wondering after reading thru these forums. thanx for the help in advance

How do u flash the rom?

Hi guys,
Kinda noob since diamond is my first ppc phone..
i am interested to flash to 1.37 as it seems to fix a few dreaded bugs like memory leak.. however cant seem to find a noob guide on in the forums
few questions
1) what are the common programs used to flash the rom?
2) After flashing the rom, all settings would be back to default?
I understand that i can use sprite backup to backup the settings
but can it still work after rom upgrade?
If so, after restoring the Rom using sprite, would it be back to the old rom version OR new rom version but previous settings?
read the development part of this forum
Read here. Don't make a new thread, look around and read the stickies.

Hi,
I have just recieved an unlocked G1 in India I have gone through the forums and am confused on how to upgrade my G1 to a cooked ROM
My current firmware is RC27
I would like to load virtuedude's Rogers ROM with exchange support
Based on the threads I have identified the steps to be performed could someone kindly advise me if the order is correct
1. Get Root Access
2. Change Radio
3. Load new SPL
4. Load virtuedude's ROM
Is this the order to be followed
Regards
vijay

HI,
I'll be nice.
You need to read the post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523
All of it.
Ok i do 4 good deeds a year and this is #2
Basically you already have root (rc27 to rc29 has root enabled )but. You can go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
Follow the instructions install one of jf's roms and your all set to flash away . For the SPL you need to do some more research , because you can brick your phone if not done right ,it requires 2 sdcards.so do your homework ....hope this helps
That's it no more , I got to save my other good deeds for something important )
Thanks
Thanks a Lot Guys, Maybe I could create a post once I do it right
job done
thread moved and closed
thank you

I would like to update my Rom ... What will I loose?

Hi There,
I have been reading the forums for the last couple of days cause I saw something about JacHero and I thought I would like to put that on my phone.
I have reading posts and trying to figure out what I have to do next, but I have to ask a couple questions 1st?
1) I am using the last JesusFreke rom, how do I know if I have to update the ROM and SPL? Can I check on my G1?
2) I have read about how you have to partition your SDCard for the who swap and Apps2SD thing, I have a 1GB SDcard ... do I need a bigger one?
3) There are so many different builds of the Hero ... How do I know what is stable, fast and popular?
4) My current Rom has all of the google apps so all of contacts, calander, and contacts sync perfectly with google's server, does the Hero rom do the same?
Thanks
Mike
normally the thread with the ROM will have the versions you need to update listed. I believe JacHeroSki needs the 1.33.2500 SPL which you can check from the fastboot screen (back+power)
You can use a 1GB sd card, but at least a 2-4+ is recommended. Also a class 6 is recommended.
As far as stability of the ROMs themselves, read the threads and choose for yourself. Most are pretty stable nowadays.
AFAIK all of the current hero ROMs have all of the google apps with them as well. So you shouldnt have any problems.
Also remember to wipe before flashing the new ROM when going to a hero build, and probably back to a "normal" ROM if you choose to do so as well.

[Q] Question on TASK29, ROM, Radio

I have two simple questions, I have been reading everything I can find on Task29, Flashing etc. (I have successfully performed a ROM flash of a custom ROM and updated my radio ROM, but now I want to learn more) - I just want to make sure I understand this correctly so thanks for answering my questions if you are able.
1. I know Task29 formats/clears all memory.
2. I know as part of that task how to then flash a custom ROM
My first question is this - if I do this process, do I *HAVE* to flash a Radio ROM after, or do most custom ROMs (example: Energy) include a Radio ROM so after Task29/flash custom ROM the phone is usable?
Second (related) question - Does Task29 clear the Radio Rom from memory too?
Thanks again!

i'll try to explain:
task29 executes format c so windows is away BUT bios is not.
same on touch pro2:
internal memory is cleaned but radio and splashscreen are untouched
custom roms can include but nromaly they dont radio roms
so task29 is just doing format c:/
you can flash a radio rom afterwards but thats nothing special =)
after task29 only memory is cleared! nothing more and nothing less
Thanks for the explanation! I flashed an updated Radio ROM so I know how to do that. The explanation of BIOS vs. memory was good. I understand now, thanks!

[Q] ROM Manager help....

Hi guys.
I want to get into rom flashing, but to be honest I find it rather confusing to say the least.
It would appear that ROM manager seems to be the easiest way to flash my phone correct?
Am I right in saying that all I need to do is download whichever rom I wish to install, rename it to "install .zip", put this file on the internal SD (not quite sure where exactly), then use ROM manager to flash, then it's done?
Is this the safest way of doing a flash?
Sorry for the noob questions.
You shud read your previous post dude

I thought ROM manager took all that out of it. All you need to do is make sure your on latest CWM (which is does for you before you can download, i believe) and then you pick your download. Once it finishes it asks you whether you want to install and it does it all for you...
There is no "safe" way to flash. Something can always go wrong. I advise you follow the directions on the threads of your chosen rom. That way you can learn of the current bugs, the best way to flash based on your current situation (GB, Stock, another ICS etc) and what you may need to do before hand e.g. wipe/factory reset
If you have any questions on a particular installation method search the forum and the thread. If you cant find it then ask within the thread of your chosen rom.
Usually if its another rom i believe the best thing to do is wipe/factory reset from recovery menu and then choose zip from sd card. (But you still shoud read the first 2 pages and last 3 pages of the thread)

What is the CWM, and why do I need that?
CWM = colockworkmod. Its basically the a new recovery menu that gives you more freedom to what you can do whilst in the menu. You have it on non-rooted devices (stock firmware/samsung firmware) but as i said it provides more freedom. I believe almost every rom uses a version of it, either adapted or not.
Im not sure you will be able to use ROM manager on a device that is not yet rooted (rooted means you have administrative privileges like in windows). You will need root access as you will be changing the system files which if done incorrectly will cause something to go wrong. Which is why you wish to use ROM manager. TBH is very hard to do something wrong with the SGS and not be able to come back from it to have a fully capable phone again.
Don't rush into anything though. Don't root or flash anything without knowing the risks and what could happen, and in-turn what needs to be done to correct it. If you know this then usually you will understand what went wrong and how to fix it.
Sorry for leaving all these long messages, just trying to be clear
