Hello all. I have had bad reception on my Wizard just like everyone else. I have also read the scary post on the Howard Forums describing how to do surgery on the antenna. The hack is proven to work, but I was still scared about voiding my waranty. Well I whiped up a safer way to fix the antenna issue. I have attached pics to help others implement my fix.
Supplies needed-->
Aluminum Foil
Clear Tape
Scissors
Good Pair of Eyes
Cut a single layer piece of Aluminum Foil that matches the larger, left side of the antenna. If you look closely at the stock antenna you will see 2 indentions in the copper where the contact pins from the phone touch. Make sure that your foil only reaches far enough to cover the left indention and not the right one. The right pin will still use the stock antenna. Now cover the Foil with Clear Tape almost completely. (One layer should be fine) The only part that will not be covered by tape is the right corner facing out (Circled in Red below). The back side of that corner has to be covered with Clear Tape to prevent shorting antennas. Which is the flaw we are trying to alleviate.

Back Side
Place 2 rolled pieces of Clear Tape on the original antenna. This will secure the Foil antenna to the stock antenna.
Carefully place the Foil antenna on the stock antenna. Make sure the Foil antenna does not cover the Camera Lens, or the rubber plug.(Its easier to remove the rubber plug before re-assembly) The most important part is to make sure that the right corner of the Foil is covering the left indention completely and is not near the right indention. Now carfully re-assemble the phone and check your reception.
If the antennas make correct contact and are not shorting out you will have excellent reception. This mod will not void your waranty like the surgery mod as long as you remove the Foil antenna before sending your Wizard in for waranty work/replacement. 8) Also the Cingular Radio Rom 2.5.11 helps alot. I recomend installing it along with this mod.
Edit: 16-06 22:26 GMT+1, Made thread sticky as asked (eDsuB)
Great little how to, I'll give this a try as the other hardware mods looked a little bit to 'permanent' for my liking.
Have you got an idea of how much it improved things in %'age terms?
I know going from a 2.00.07 (I think) to 2.25.11 radio ROM seems to have given between 5-10% improvement on the devices I have tried rolling it out on. It also seems to spend less time locking to a tower in the newer radio ROM.
How did you get the cover off without breaking the tabs?
I tried, but was too afraid to break them so I figured I would ask.
HTC Universal?
Wow, this looks great! But any ideas on how to make something like this with an HTC Universal, I tried something similar with the antenna on my Jasjar but it seems I didn't made anything work better than before.
Wow! Look what I found out when I opened my Jasjar, I have been having many problems because of these guys at i-mate!!!!!! I am missing an antenna!!!!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=304105#304105
I get about 50% improvement in signal.
I broke the tabs opening mine first time opening it. Broken tabes dont seam to affect anything. The battery cover holds the antenna cover on. You can try prying the sides open instead of the bottom on the antenna cover. That may prevent the tabs from breaking. But I do not know since I broke mine.
Could you show pics/details of how to remove the plastic part for the antenna? I just don't wanna screw anything up or take anything off I don't have to.
I do not know a safe way to remove cover. I broke my tabs. But I believe if you pry on the bottom sides of the camera cover, one side at a time, the cover will come off safely. Do not pry on the bottom of the camera cover. This will break the tabs. I did that. Good luck.

Has anyone else done this? If so, have you noticed a worthwhile signal increase?
TIA!
I just add the aluminium foils as kevev suggested. I will let you know if it imporve the signall. I used to have a very bad signal in my work place. so will get back to you guys after the weekend.

I just applied the antenna upgrade and would argue that I did get a signal increase as I now have signal at work at my desk where I did not have signal before albeit one bar which is all I really need for texting and recieving notifications etc so yay.
As for those who are looking for a safer way to remove the antenna panel check out this link which gives some pictorals that helped me out (I did not break anything by using this guide)
http://www.pdagold.com/articles/detail.asp?a=274
Careful though the above article takes much more of the phone apart then you need, but the article isnt actually written about getting to the antenna but nonetheless the images are helpful.
I did it too. Did not break any tabs.
There is a true improvement in signal.
Question is : is it safe?
Does anybody have a link to that Howard Forums section? Just curious what they're doing ( I guess cutting up the original antenna ).
I'm also curious as to how this potential mistake could be made by HTC, if it is a mistake
-----
As for dangers - the usual.. brain tumors and such
I bet it will make your device non-FCC-compliant, if nothing else, though :x
i'm gonna have to give this a try. i have already full bars wherever i go BUT want to increase my edge/gprs speeds. maybe this will help a bit.
has anyone tried this mod in combination to the mod where you cut your antenna? if so does it still increase the reception even more?

Thanks, Panja... interesting stuff.. might try it here if I can find some aluminum foil, and get back with some results... NiceTrack should show me signal strength quite clearly, along with a graph.. so maybe (with any luck), I can actually get a screengrab of the graph before/after/before/after
I just tried it myself and it did not work for me with the foil...
Hi... I did this mod to my Cingular 8125 and am happy to report that my signal went up from 1 bar to 2 and sometimes 3. (I live in a hilly area, no towers in sight)
Great, simple mod. Thanks!

I haven't checked all posts so it may have been addressed already. But, my pictures were comming out super fuzzy. And the business card ocr wasn't working. I took the back cover off and cleaned the internal lens. still no luck, then I took back cover off and tried taking a picture. And it was WOW! clean like it should be. OCR also works awesome
problem is the glass/plastic on the removable back cover, I think its plastic. I am a true cell phone user and keep the phone in my pocket, without change or keys. but the plastic rubs the cotton pocket and scratches up.
I bought the phone $600 cash from ATT store. I called att and those son of a ****** sent me to htc for the 1 yr warranty, and htc said I could buy a new cover. But the defect is theirs, if you reasonably assume that a person carries a phone in their pocket.
They should've used glass.
Can someone please take back cover off and tell me if they notice extreme difference?, like I did.
ATT has it out for me since I am a gsm charter account.
Thanks,
damthrill

With back cover OFF:
I tried like hell, took several shots to make sure the camera was steady, positioned the same place, etc....
Hope this helps.
that is a big improvement. they said you can buy another cover. would that even fix the problem if it was the cover in the first place that cause the poor quality? i dont see how putting another cover on will fix it, unless the new cover is some kind of high quality glass or something.
After playing with it......
I wonder if it is actually the plastic or if it is the amount of light that is let into the camera lens?
If you look at the back you will see that there is just a small hole... I mean just enough for the camera lens to shoot a picture. Once the back cover is OFF, it has the opportunity to take alot of light into the photo.
Maybe drilling out the plastic will allow more light to come into the picture????
But you might never know because you will drill out the plastic, which might solve the problem. But you might also be letting in more light, which might solve the problem. With a "fix" like drilling out the plastic, you can't undo what you did to test the "other" theory.... is it LIGHT or is it the PLASTIC??? Hummm.........
Look at his two pics carefully. See the distinct difference between black shade, one is really black. Also, take a look at the color of the can text, its redder. Do you think you can try taking some pics of some girls in bikinis with and w/o cover. I am just trying to say that I think the camera actually takes good pics if cover is off. I know that it makes a big difference if the optical business card reader program can all of sudden extract lots more data time and time again with cover off,
But, no one should take cover off to take pics. I just want to use what they advertised.
I can't drill cover because it would turn it into a dust collector inside.
Good work, lets try to get some more pics for referencing.
a back cover with sliding mechanism for the lens should be clearly better...
I also made a pic with and without cover. Wow, the differance!
I checked this too.
It's unbelievabla ! I was wonder my old TyTN II did better pictures.
I think we have to claim this to HTC like the video driver problem.
What's your opinion ?

That's INCREDIBLE. HTC really dropped the ball on this one....ugh!!!!!
Wow. I just tried this and found that there was some dirt on the inside of the cover where the lens is. Cleaned that off and the difference is huge. I might even use my phone camera now.
That sucks. I guess we'll have to keep our covers clean.
I think the point is that clean covers or not, the cover sucks.. lol.
Someone should use this info in the htcwiki and those other petition sites.
I think next time I'll be a bit more carefull with who i buy an expensive device from, this video thing and now this camera thing (and the fact that my usb port is slightly bent, and my hard button face plate is slightly loose too) are things that should not be happening with such an expensive device.
no difference...
i've taken 2 photo's, with and without the cover, see no differences, i'd really look for another cover if i was you...
Here's an image I took with a cover. It looks pretty good to me.
Perhaps your covers are just really dirty/defective?
http://esotericbabble.com/journal/wp-photos/20080112-164310-1.jpg
i've got to say i did 3 images, 1 with cover on, straight out my pocket, 1 with cover off, 1 with cover back on, but cover removed cleaned outside and inside and also a good clean of the lense.
Once cleaned i could see no difference with the cover off or on, the one i did take with the cover on just out my pocket was very blurry, fuzzy, but when i opened the cover up, the cover and lense where full of dust etc...... i think you may have a defective cover....
i had also an issue with the bcr software. my settings were autofocus at half press of the button and then to take the pic full press.
at half press everything was sharp and when i pressed the button the af changed and the pic was not sharp.
i changed to take pic at half press, now everything works.
good luck

I have to say; i just changed mine to half press and i gotta say this has improved the the focus and quality a lot, thanks for that g-fall!
If you look closely at the plastic window thats on my cover, I see micro scratches, but how did they get their? from normal use, I have never scratched glass lenses. A key chain in the pocket with phone just one time can mess up the glass lens if it keeps tapping on a glass lens. The scratches appear becuase htc used cheap plastic, so is this a defect? They don't think so, I also told the warranty lady if I could talk to an engineer, she said no. Now this auto focus at half way idea, I will try. It is unacceptable to have these problems on a $600 device, esp. when they already gutted out the inside camera, like the kaiser has 2 cameras I think?
damthrill
I still love this phone passionately
also people there is a coating on the plastic cover on the removable back. You see how looks like it has a purpleish tint to it? the camera lens cover also has this coating. I think they should have only used this coating on the camera lens cover since this coating is made to filter light I believe they are filtering to much light out hence the pictures being so much brighter when the cover is removed. HowEver you are righ that the plastic cover is cheap and scratchs way to easy I have always carried mine in the case that came with it from HTC and mine is looking pretty poor these days
Thanks for the half-press tip! That made a big difference in the quality of my pictures. I always had trouble pressing it all the way after it focused.
Hope this helps someone:
My Tilt has always taken crappy photos. Photos taken with the Kaiser/Tilt that I've seen are often washed out and overly bright. Earlier today I was taking a picture, and the back fell off. I was shocked to see the amazing (in comparison to the old) picture quality. Everything was so crisp. Like going from VGA to 3.0 megapixels. So I ripped off the plastic piece that said "3.0 Megapixels" to reveal the camera's face but left the silver bezel and speaker bezel on. Attached are before and after pics.

Most people just take the back off so that the camera is actually protected when not in service.

I was have trouble taking good pictures with my Nikon D90, then one day I decided to drill holes through the lens cap.
You have no idea how this improved the picture quality.
Well, your logic fails, because lens caps aren't fixed to the lens.
Tomorrow, I am planning on shaping a piece of Lucite (which is much more durable than the cheap plastic that was) to fit in that impression on the battery cover.
This was posted a long while back but great info for those that don't realize it.
A hot soldering iron is the most effective method, IMO. That's what I used. You don't need to remove ALL of the plastic, just enough so the camera can "see".

My point exactly, neither is the back cover, you take the cover off to take a photo, you put it back on when you are done, that way you don't have to take a "soldering iron " to your $500 phone.
You don't have to drill a hole, just take off the battery cover when you want better qality pictures.
Is there an echo in here?

I tried using a very, very small drill bit (1/16") but the plastic was so thin and fragile. I didn't think of that. I will try that on a piece of plexiglass to replace the old piece of plastic.

That's a nice idea, but my back cover doesn't stay on well as-is. I don't want to exasperate the problem by repeatedly removing the cover when taking a photo.

Seriously -- I removed that garbage piece of plastic from my phone and the results are much better, and I don't have to take the time to pop the cover off whenever I want to take a pic.
Be slow and careful prying off the chrome part, then use some good adhesive _sparingly_ to put the chrome piece back on.
You DON'T have to keep the cover in pristine condition for service -- if you have to send your phone in they will tell you specifically to _not_ send in the back cover, SIM card, battery stylus and any microSD cards.
Besides, if you really screw up, you can get a replacement cover easy enough.

Wow I didn't realize that taking the cover off takes other people 10 minutes. Mine can come off during that small delay after hitting the camera button.
Perhaps because mine is newer -- it takes some effort to pop it off.
And I don't want to keep doing it and risk breaking the tabs on the cover.
Better to remove the clear plastic once and be done with it -- trust me
thanx,people for very useful thread.
Having just attempted the open surgery option (i.e. taking the chrome bit off carefully) and making a pigs ear of it, I can now recommend the laparoscopic approach instead (i.e. the soldering iron). Or alternatively heating a very small phillips head screwdriver with a lighter. I ended up putting the 'glass' bit back in and doing this because mine was white underneath and looked crap. The small hole in the 'glass' is much less noticeable.
Can't believe the difference in quality of the pics. Although I am slightly concerned that I'm much more likely to get dust and moisture into my PDA now. Time will tell I guess....

When you buy an extended life battery on ebay it comes with a new back for your phone that has just a hole with no plexiglass. This fixes 2 problems.
I used some plastic polish and cleaned up the that piece of transparent plastic. Over time it gets banged up. Polishing it helped a bunch. Still not as good as removing the cover.
Having the lens exposed to dust and other crap doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Once the lens gets messed up there isn't much you can do. So drilling a hole or removing the plastic isn't a good alternative to removing the cover.
Replacing the transparent plastic with a lens cover of some sort would be a good mod. Something that can be removed or opened.
The other day, I noticed my phone stopped ringing, but was still vibrating. I did everything that I could to try to get the phone to play sound through the external speaker, but I got nothing. I eventually did the ODIN 1 click to restore and I'm still getting no sound. I took the phone apart to check to see if the speaker cable was loose, but everything is in tact...
Does anyone know what Samsung support is like? I loved being able to take my iPhone into any Apple store to get it swapped out for any issues. Is it the same with the Captivate and any AT&T store? I bought the phone from Best Buy.
How long has it been since you got the phone? Since you bought it from best buy I'm guessing you should take it there first if anywhere. They might swap you for a new one within 30 days of the purchase, but that's just a general warranty dealy that may not apply to phones. In any case I'd hit best buy first, because unless you bought it from the at&t store, I'm not sure If they'd help you that much as far as replacements go.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
take off the battery cover and press down on the speaker.
Best buy will replace the phone within the 30 day buyers remorse period.
After that you have to go through AT&T Warranty dept (not the store). They will advance you a refurb phone, and give you stuff to send back.
On that note hopefully you are within 30 days so you get a brand new phone from BB.
I just had this happen to me for the first time today, and pushing hard on the speaker fixes it for me, too. For now. Not a good sign. I think today is my 29th day...gotta make a quick decision. Time to read up on restoring to factory default...I've rooted and lagfixed this guy.

Same problem
I am having exactly the same problem does anyone know how to fix it? :S i root it yesterday and tried the lag fix thingy.
I had the same problem. It happened on the night of the 29th day of owning the phone, the next day I took it to the closest AT&T Warranty Exchange center (or whatever they call it) and got a new phone.
I had this happen to me a few weeks ago, lucky for me it had only been like two weeks since I had bought the phone. I got it from At&t and just went back there and they gave me a new one. Does anyone know what causes this?
Fixed
I had the same problem...had tried the Odin One-Click restore, tried restoring, and several other things.
Do what VZSpyder says above...remove the battery cover and press down on the speaker. It immediately started working.
<<-- also a victim of the speaker issue. Pressing down on it has worked for about a month now. But the whole issue is a sign of larger problems I feel plague this handset.
I learned the hard way not to trust this thing as an alarm clock when the speaker glitch started showing itself.
The Samsung captivate has been by far the most problem prone phone or PDA I have had in my possession since 2002.
Actually, I haven't found any activity I can truly trust this phone to perform. It seems to randomly be unable to fulfill every task it is theoretically capable of.
Solutions to Captivate Speaker Issue
Ok, so I had my Samsung Captivate speaker cut out entirely last night and was, needless to say, very disappointed. However, I still believe it is a good phone, I cling to this notion despite the ribbing I took from my friends when the speaker cut out during a YouTube video. Grrrr... Anyway, and more to the point, what follows is my fix.
First, I pressed firmly on the speaker as suggested by many bloggers and the speaker started working again. Hooray! However, like many Captivate owners, I find this temporary fix, "unacceptable on principle alone." Ever the tinkerer and problem-solver, I thought there must be a low-tech solution to this issue as it appears to be related to the small 16mm x 5mm speaker unit’s unseen electronic contacts.
I thought: “If only there were a way to provide constant gentle pressure to the speaker unit without interfering with its performance or voiding the phone’s warranty, gentle but firm pressure that would stabilize the speaker unit and perhaps add a level of protection from vibration.” Here is what I came up with and I believe that it is quite possibly the lowest cost solution ever stumbled upon by a mere mortal.
I took one small "3M Command™ Strip," of the 16mm width variety associated with 3M's wonderful "Damage-Free Hanging Wall Solution" collection of devices. At one end of each Command™ Strip there is a 5mm section of the strip that is sticky on one side, the so-called “wall-side,” while the other side is adhesive free. I cut this end off producing a 5mm wide and 16mm long strip which has friendly adhesive only on one side. I then cut that strip to produce one 2mm wide and one 3mm wide strip exactly 16mm long.
Since the speaker unit is about 16mm long and 10mm wide, I then applied the 2mm x 16mm strip at the outermost boundary of the top of the speaker unit (closest to the camera lens) and the 3mm x 16mm strip at the outermost boundary at the bottom of the unit (closest to the battery). This seems to leave the tiny speaker grill, roughly 5mm wide, unimpeded and once the metal cover is put back in place it could, in theory, provide enough gentle pressure on the speaker unit to stabilize it and perhaps prevent a loss of electrical contact in the event of vibration and associated shifting or, God forbid, a small drop.
Stupid Speakers...
I have a similar problem with my Captivate's sound. Randomly, the sound will drop to almost nothing, though it is still audible if you put it right up to your ear.... Just barely.
It seems to "fix" itself if I gently tap the phone or drop it on a table or something... Could this be something similar? Perhaps electrical connections not being seated firmly?
it IS an electrical connection not sitting correctly.
press firmly on the left area beside the grill.
or take back for warranty.
if you dont have warranty, open it up press the connection back down and apply a peice of scotch tape over it.
Replacement doesn't help. I've got a new speaker put in by samsung .and 2days later. Same thing. I just havea small piece of paper behind the back plate to keep pressure on it.works well

I had the same thing happen to me. I just took it back and got another one. A little tip for those that don't like this or any other phone for that mater.
If you phone is still under warranty call/take it in 3 times. After 3 times you can request a different phone. Just be sure to pick one that is atleast as good or better.
I have used this method to get pseudo free upgrades for years now.

ok I think I've discover the cause of the lift.
Got a replacement due to screen lift and guess what the new one had a slight lift on the lower left.
I figure must be a loose screw, it's not as bad as the old one where the whole left side bulged out.
So I open it and found all the screws to be snug. So I unscrewed the lower left, thinking it's too tight and that's where I discover the cause.
It's not that the screws are too loose, it's that there isn't enough space between the frame & the glass. So the tighter you screw it in, the further you're pushing the screen out, causing the lift.
Here's the simple solution I came up with.

You'll need the following:
Nexus 7 with back cover removed
Pill Blister Pack (Allergy pills from walmart shown)
Small screwdrivers
Scissors and/or knife
Sewing Needle (not pictured)
needle nose pliers OPTIONAL (for those with thick fingers)
First you need to make a hole in the blister for the screw to go thru.
Here I'm using a sewing machine like a drill press to create my hole.
Next, cut out a rectangle and use your small screwdriver (Bigger than the needle, but smaller than the screw)
This will make the hole bigger for the screw to fit. While blister is still on screwdriver, use your knife and run it around the excess plastic created by the screwdriver.
Remove the blister and trim the corners so that it'll fit in the round frame
Remove the screw from the frame and slide the blister in between the frame
Screw the screw back snug, DON'T OVER TORQUE IT!
Right away the screen lift is gone where the blister is installed. Repeat for each screw where the screen is lifting up.
Cut away the excess so you can put the cover back on
Don't cut it flush to the frame, leave a little so you can grab it and remove it if you need to.
OPTIONAL - use a flathead to push that little bit down to eliminate any chance of obstructing the back cover.
Snap the back cover back on and enjoy your flush screen.
depending on how much lift you have, you might have to use 2 or more to fill the gap. But beware, the more you add the thicker the frame will be and you might run into issues with the back cover not fitting snug.
Looks interesting, might give this a whirl later.
ya!
After receiving my replacement today only to find out it had the same problem I tried this and so far so good! I hope it stays! Thank you for this!
Awesome job :good:
Update: Failed. Spent Hour trying this. Keeps coming back just putting the case back on. Ill try again on Monday. Used same thickness plastic, then tried thinner, then tried IDE Floppy Cable (ASUS brand haha).
I am sending this back anyways. Here is my before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jDIgiWFPgc

Tried it with 1 on top. 2 on top. 2 on bottom (Pictured below). All 4.
I'll confirm this is still working 24 hours later and feels more solid than it did when I first took It out of the box. Thank you so much! I started the RMA process and received the links to order my replacement when I read they hold another $225 from your account until they receive the original back and determine I caused no damage. You saved me a lot of time/hassle/and money being held from me for at least 1-2 weeks.

Yes thank you man, I tried it when you first posted it yesterday, I can vouch for the fix in this thread as i did the previous one, so happy that it is working for me and several others, it is well worth the 10-20 minutes to perform the fix.
I wish this would work on mine, but my problem is clearly related to a bad adhesive job. I'm almost tempted to re-glue it myself considering there is nothing else wrong with the thing but I'll give Google one more chance to send me a perfect one.
How about a donation link? I'd like to buy you a beer or 2 for your fix.
Wonderful job with the pictures man, they really helped. I can confirm that this works perfect for me too. I just did not but the tablet immediately feels better. No squishyness at all. With the previous fix (tightening the screws) the screen still felt squishy. Nothing now. It feels just as sturdy as the right hand side.

I initially thought mine may have been adhesive related.. but turns out after this fix, it really is not.
Edit: id highly suggest giving this a try, it isnt difficult, probably cannot be detected as "user modification" if you remove the makeshift washers. If you dont want to that's your call, but i think the problem is still fixable with this method.

I dunno man, I can actually see underneath the glass on mine, that's how bad it is. I might give this a shot while I'm waiting for my replacement but I really don't expect it to do any good. I am happy for everybody who is finding success with this, just don't see myself being one of those lucky people.

I really would give this a shot...I'm convinced the issue is not adhesive related. My tab doesn't actually have a screen lift issue... it has been making a crunching sound that i discovered is actually just the black tape/insulation that the little black foam piece is glued to. If you remove the back cover and just fiddle with that black insulation you should hear the crunching i described. I am 90% sure that the crunching sound people are reporting is really not going to affect your devices integrity at all. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that one.
So far so good. Let's see whether it stays that way or not. The left side feel solid now
Thanks for the fix and the photos.

I just opened up my buddy's N7 with him, and check this out. It looks like the N7 already has some type of circular washers in this spot. OP, and those of you who have done this - did your N7s have these circular washers as well, or was that space totally hollow? I couldn't tell from your pictures. I've attached pictures so you can see what I'm talking about. It doesn't look like there's room in here to add the blister pack washers you guys are talking about, unless I really have to struggle to shove them in. Is it possible some N7s were missing these washers?

No, those were there on all of them. Those do not come out as far as i can tell. The blister washer goes in between the black round part and the back plate where the screw enters. Its snug but it should be, this will allow you to snug up the screws and alleviate the pressure on the screen. People seem to forget that only adhesive would not cause glass to bend, it would just sit loose but not protrude upward without a force behind it.
I just did what op did and everything is working fine. Fantastic work!

You, sir, are brilliant. I just did the fix and it seems to be holding well. I'll see how it is tomorrow but the logic behind it seems solid.
Thank you for sharing!
Performed the fix, and it seems to have fixed the problem on my friend's N7. The OP is smarter than stinking Asus! Bravo.
One minor issue on the N7 I did this on is the back doesn't seem to be completely flush with the bezel now in the area with the washers, but this beats the screen lifting.
Have people allowed enough time after performing this and rechecked their screens? Everyone was saying retorquing the screws was the fix, and it initially looked like it did help, but eventually the screen came back up.
Thanks for the fix, but to be honest all this seems to be ridiculous, there should be no defect in a product you had to pay good money for. I'm hoping a fix comes soon out of the box.
for $5 or less!

Double sided tape (mines was about 1/32" thick)
Electrical tape
Knife (not shown)
(Since I had these already, the fix was free for me)
Open up your nexus 7
and put the tape as shown:
On the right side of the back (where the buttons are) cut about 1/4" of tape so you'll have a strip that's 1/4" wide and 1" long (the roll of tape is an inch thick)
Put your cover next to the nexus and trim the tape so that it will not touch the 'grooves' on the frame (I've marked it in red). and stick them to the back cover just below the level of the clips.
This will get rid of the 'creaks' & some of the sponginess on the right side.
click for close up
[1] This is what's cause the bulge on the left side. The border around the wifi antenna is hitting the 2nd screw. So take an knife and CAREFULLY trim it flush to the back. You don't have to trim it all, a good 1/4" will do. (note. I have a washer under the 2nd screw to fix the screen lift)
[2] the tape on the left side over the Touchscreen cable is what cause the 'creaks'. So use some Electrical tape and cover this area up. MAKE SURE NOT TO OVERLAP. You don't want any extra thickness in this area, you just want to hold down the existing tape from moving.
(I don't have any tape on mine since I don't have noise issue there)
Now on to the battery. This is what cause most of the sponginess and some of the creak on the right side. If you tap or press where the 'X' is on the back cover you'll know what I'm talking about.
Use your finger and feel where the battery ends and the wire area begins (I marked it with a blue line to show where the battery ends) This will give you an approximation on how long your double sided tape will be. From the frame to the battery.
Put your cover on top (as shown) to figure out how WIDE the tape will be. You want to leave a gap for the foam on the back cover (marked in red)
You might have to add another, smaller layer on top of your tape. If you push on your double sided tape and it goes below the frame, then you need to add that smaller piece to make it flush to the frame.
Here's a close up of what I'm talking about.
I also added a large piece (the size of the empty slot on top) from the motherboard to the top of the battery. Since the metal frame ends half way, this will make up the gap.
Put your cover on from LEFT to RIGHT (side with the buttons on last)
Now these are the spots that were giving me the most noise and sponginess, yours might be different. If you still hear a noise, note the spot and see if adding tape near that area will help.
BONUS TIP: If a game/app requires you to use it in landscape mode. First hold it in landscape mode on the right side, so that the camera is on your right instead of your left. Disable Autorotate screen to lock it in landscape mode. Now open your game/app and it'll run on the right side instead of default left.
WHY DO THIS?
Like most I had screen lift, so I did not want to put added stress on the left side of the screen.
Since the right side just have battery, I think it's also structurally more sound than the left where all the electronics are.
Also, since the processors are on the left side, it gets pretty toasty when running graphic intensive games, so holding it on the right side will keep your hands cool and allowing the heat to dissipate better/faster without your warm hands in the way.

I don't do OT anymore. Reddit. But I used to love your stuff man. Haven't seen it in a while tho obviously. Anyways, did ur fix. Seems better for sure.
This is absurd, that anyone would even consider doing this after paying $249.99 or $199.99 of their hard earned cash.
Too each their own. I'm an engineering student and I completely understand the appeal of finding solutions yourself even when you can return a product. This is one of the reasons I come to xda. Thanks for the tips and pics OP.

Absurd to save yourself an RMA ticket you might need later for a GOOD reason, fix your device yourself for less than five bucks, get to root around under the hood, and all without voiding your warranty?
What's absurd is your sense of entitlement.
Will it void the warranty (provided I remove them IF I need to hand it back)?
I just got my second Nexus 7 and this one seems to have squeaking issues in bottom left (sounds like in the back case, not screen) and I was thinking of opening it up but not sure about warranty...

Entitlement? I don't think there's anything entitled about expecting to receive a product free of defects, and exchanging it if it is not.
Also, what's this about saving RMA tickets you might need later? The warranty says you get a device free of defects, not you get a limited number of RMA tickets to get your device free of defects.
I guess you could ship it out to china and wait three weeks for them to do the exact same thing for free, or DIY in 10 minutes plus the cost of some supplies that most people already have laying around the house. Most people around on XDA are do it yourselfers, get used to it
I did something very similar with 3M to mine awhile back, except I just applied it above the battery. It fixed any flex, though I think I used a bit too thick 3M, as mine has a bulge in the back cover now.
Anyway, thanks for the post. The pictures and everything make it very easy to follow.

opening up the back cover will not void any warranty.
nothing in this mod should void any warranty, with exception of step one, the bulge fix (which you don't have)

Manufacturers tend to cut their losses and cut you loose from the RMA process after a couple of RMAs. Usually, they do so by offering you a full refund for returning your product, but I've seen a few cases where they just say "You are abusing the RMA process and we won't service your device(s) anymore. Take it to a repair shop".
I never knew creaking was a defect considering its made out of plastic.... I would hate to be a manufacturer that had to deal with all these over exaggerated claims lol.
