I am totally sick of this crap. Microsoft should stick to PC's and stay out of pocket pc's as they can't develop one O/S that is stable.
Just when I thought I had a stable ROM, the thing displays all sorts of unwanted effects including:
1. Occasional Hard resetting of PPC (but not actually formatting the device; no...it installs duplicate programs and settings instead!!)
2. Soft Keys have a mind of their own (sometimes they appear as I defined their use, other times they appear according to its own desires!)
3. On occasion wifi doesn't work, but mostly it works perfectly.
4. Sometimes messaging application does not initiate (neither through soft keys activation or direct access through Programs)
I have a list that I cannot be bothered to type out, suffice to say I have a degree in Computing & Information systems (no big deal I know!) and over ten years experience in building, maintaining and upgrading PC's not to mention several years experience of owning Palm o/s, Symbian o/s and Win CE pocket pc's.
My opinion is valid!! I don't care what anyone else says to the contrary. Windows mobile 5 and it's predecessors are a load of crap and are robbing us of our hard earned cash!! And I've spent a fortune on them all!!
I am by no means an expert, but I am no fool and more than capable of learning, hence I've tried to no avail with these devices.
Just when you think your device is running near perfect (within reason), new issues pop up!
NEWBIES...PAY ATTENTION!!!
Get out of this while you can and stop throwing away money and your most precious commodity....your TIME!!!
My last o/s phone (smartphone) was a SonyEriccson P910i. That was quite good with minimal crashes or lock-ups. I moved back to Windows based mobile phones because of more CPU power and compatibility.
MAIN GRIPES:
I miss calls....due to maintenance (upgrading ROM or soft resets or hard resets or lock-ups)
I miss text and MMS messages.....due to maintenance
I miss appointments due non-induced hard resets (only twice mind you)
I miss knowing that I can be reached or can make a call at any given moment!!
I'm not one of those people who needs a phone predominantly and a PDA secondly. I just need reliability.
I've swapped..yes swapped my Jasjar for the MDA Vario for the same reasons that I'm complaining about WM5 & HTC. The Wizard is just as unstable!!
Don't misunderstand me...when these devices are working, they are wonderful and I would prefer no other phone/PPC in the world, but reliability is of paramount importance, surely!!
Well...I'm done with this 'got to be a developer to use my phone' syndrome. I'm going back to SonyE. or someone else who know how to make devices with at least 90% reliability!! I wasn't expecting perfection from Man, merely my moneys worth!!
This is the bottom line:
I want a convergence device that I spend more time deriving its benefits than I do researching how to improve its instability and unreliability!!
And before anyone says it:
HTC are full of it just like Microsoft, as they were undoubtedly aware of this WM5 bug-ridden o/s before desinging hardware for it!

Update: 27/2/06:
See my most recent posts. I was wrong and apologise for misleading you guys without having properly identified the cause of my device problems (very dangerous I know). The problem was definately buggy ROMs and this has now been fully rectified via Qteks 1.6.7.1 ROM.
Give it up!!!
If you check all my posts you will find that I am still appreciative of all the hard work that a lot of you gurus have made, but that does not excuse HTC & Microsoft for continually releasing products before they have been tested and twaeked to perfection.
This is not a game!! Some of us actually rely on these devices to help earn a living and or organise our lives!!
I now find myself reverting back to doing everything on a regular PC, standard phone and pen & Paper!!
HTC devices have become a joke to me!
Additionally; my wife is on her 4th..yes 4th brand new MDA Pro!!! Different issues with all of them.
That tells you something doesn't it? :?

Hmm.. I'm using MDA Compact 2, doesn't seems to have your problems.. the only problem I have is a dead loud speaker.
Anyway, you may want to try out Treo that runs Palm.
consumer electronics
Hi,
i just moved away from a palm treo 600: bad telephone reception and literally crappy headphone connector (it screwed up the telephone with a bug well known on internet, i had to use my solder to repair it...).
And now i am an happy user of an QTEK9100. Not perfect, but very near...except for the alarm!!! sometimes missed. no resets, SUPER voice command, 264 MHz and ROM 2.8....you get me.
I think there is a general problem in consumer electronic: support for example. Once you give the money for a buy, bye bye....

Sorry Ipasq.
Maybe my bad experience is clouding my judgement somewhat. All I'm saying is that if you find yourself tweaking and upgrading more than you use the device, ....somethings wrong and you should consider what you set out for when you bought it. if your experience is a good one with minor setbacks (which your happy to live with) then ignore my experiences.
I'm currently re-testing/evaluating my Device with just the minimum of software installed, that I cannot do without, maybe that will highlight problems with a specific application (but I doubt it!) To try and remain fair to the rest of HTC product owners, I will post my findings if they are positive and I will humbly retract my complaints but if they proove to remain negative, I'll keep it to myself so as to not deter anyone from indulging in WM5 PPC/phone!
Good luck either way.

Hi,
I think you have got a very bad experience there. I've been using smartphones from motorola MPX200 to Sony Ericsson's P800, Motorola's E680, O2's Blue Angel and now Dopod 838. Let me tell you, I must admit that WM2003 was quite buggy, however, the new WM2005 is real neat. I wouldn't say Microsoft has done a bad job, cos I've used worse device. P800 running on symbian was really a horror. I've promised not to ever use a symbian phone again after my bad experience with P800. (am I sterotyping then?)
As far as I am concern, WM2005 runs almost perfectly, if not flawless. and I've not experienced what you have been through. So, lets not come to a conclusion just based on your bad experience, okie?
(Kinda makes me wonder if u work for Sony, the way you put things? ) No offence plz, just my 3 cents worth. ~.~!

Hmn ok thanks for the heads up in advanced. However, I don't see how converged devices will improve if SE's the only one doing it somewhat correctly.
Sure, MS and HTC probably both suck in someway, but I don't get why you had to get 4 of the same devices to figure that out. I mean like, most people won't even go past changing the same device for the 3rd time.
While I'm sure your information is valid in someway, it's kinda obvious to me that not everyone is suited to use a pda phone, or pda for that matter.
If you have that experience as a developer, you should know that new stuff that MS comes up with usually comes with a truckload of problems, in my opinion, you should have stuck with a laptop or maybe some blackberry option, or even pen/paper.
In the first place, I highly doubt that the pda phone was designed to totally do away with the traditional pen/paper combo anyway.

I'll agree with this line. There isn't really an OS that can run efficiently. If you want a phone to function as a full pledged PC, it won't happen. There are a lot of things we need to sacrifice. I would suggest the Nokia 9500 as the perfect business phone for you.
To me all phones are great...
great paper weight.
what a lot of people tend to do is as soon as they get a device they automatically think they should start tweaking and updateing things.....what some people dont' understand is that every tweak and every upgrade will be different for others....people need to try out thier devices for a few days, maybe weeks depended on how often you use the devices features, and see if your device really needs the tweaks or not....that's what i do, i use my device then as soon as i see that something can be changed or needs to be tweaked i'll see if there is one out there, i do it one at a time try it out for a while then move on to the next, so that way you'll know if that tweak is really stable or not, don't do all the tweaks at one time......for some people the device is perfect right out the box.....just something to think about....
i understand your frustration ... i myself having a plethora of smartphones / pda phones ... i personally happy with my xda exec ... why? because anybody who goes into this realm of pda phones should understand that the HTC products are always been PDAs first and Phones second ... with this premise, upgrading the ROM regularly is part of the whole experience... I also have all SE p800, p900, p910 which are all great Phones then having the great PDA functionality ... while the p900 and p910 have minimal differences, they are very good phones first and then very good PDAs to boot ... but you see even the more stable SE P series phones need to restarted and have their own version of hard reset (though not as frequent as their Windows counterparts)
ps i'm not even going to those Palm Treo 600 / 650 devices which are nothing but a last ditch effort of palm to try to get into the wireless phone realm ... they are just not as good as their windows / symbian counterparts ... and why get blackberries if you can get blackberry connect on your windows mobile / nokia / sony ericsson p9xx phones?
Hi All!
Thank you very much for your candid replies. I appreciate that everyones experience will either vary somewhat or be totally different. However, I firmly believe 'If it ain't broke...don't fix it'!
I have only ever upgraded because of issues with these devices and only ever applied tweaks, because improvement was MUCH needed!
I hear you all the same though, if your not up for fight stay out of the arena. Sorry all, but I'm not a defeatest. I'm not giving up, merely venting my frustrations for becoming a free-tester for Microsoft and HTC.
It wouldn't be so bad if they offered us a 50% discount on purchasing these devices as we are the ones getting to the root of their buggy devices whilst they charge us for it and then charge us again (in FULL) when they implement our improvements into their next versions of Windows Mobile devices.
Just my opinion, but I'm sticking to it.

Well it would certainly SEEM that way until now. As I mentioned in my previous posts, I've had a Jasjar which with an updated i-mate ROM, was stable but in my opinion, underperformed (everyone says it's due to the way WM5 works - bug ridden I say). I then swapped my jasjar (at a loss of course) for a T-mobile vario (Wizard) or o2 mini s etc.
My experience is that, while no bugs are visible, these devices seem like the best thing since sliced bread, but when you've had them up and running a while, the worms come out of the woodwork.
All said and done though....I updated/changed my ROM last night to Qteks 1.6.7.1 ROM and till now (about 20 hours later), not one crash, no loss of calls or uninitiated soft or hard resets! Aditionally, it SEEMS to be stable and reliable (with all my 3rd party software installed and with TI OMAP overclocking or not!).
Verdict?
Too soon to say. But I'm actually feeling rather optimistic if not just hopeful. I'm hoping that I've been wrong and that all my past experiences have been due too buggy ROMs and not WM5 & HTC. We'll see.
Another point of interest is that since I updated/changed my wifes T-mobiles MDA PRO to Qteks latest ROM, there have only been 2 lock-ups (we can live with that) and she's had that ROM for 9 days!
So it's looking like most of the instability issues we've had thus far are due to buggy ROMs.
Therefore I already feel it necessary to apologise for my negative comments and hope that anyone who has read this thread has taken the time to keep track of how things develop.
Kevin if you're interested in the mini s, don't be put of by my experiences, as there are many other factors that could have contributed to my experiences. Go for it, but be prepared for some headaches (just in case!).
Hope this helps (sorry bout the long post)

I'm Wrong!!
I'm extremely happy to say, that I must be wrong, as I've not had one crash since Fridays upgrade to Qteks 1.6.7.1 ROM.
So far I can complain about absolutely nothing, as I have even exceeded my normal usage of these devices to try and hasten a crash, but to no avail.
Long live Qteks ROM!!
apologies again for this whole thread, slating HTC and co.
I tend to agree with the OP. WM5 devices (or ppc and predecessors) and smartphones do a lot, but they tend to be a pain in the ass and finicky.
One simple example, when a WM device loses a GPRS connection, frequently you'll have to cycle the radio to get a usable connection again. Every time? No, but often enough, where you don't trust it. Compare this to a blackberry. With a bb, the connection is rock solid and robust. No, you don't get nearly as many features on a bb, but you can absolutely count on being able to receive a call and being able to obtain a data connection, period.
I currently use a smt5600, a wizard, and a 7290. When I'm traveling and I need to be sure that I'm communicating, I take the 7290.
I liken the comparison of WM to BB OSs to a comparison of firearms . The WM device to a Colt pistol: beatiful, but not as reliable as my spartan Glock. The blackberry is 100% Glock. MS needs to work on transitioning away from the finicky Colt towards a more reliable AND feature rich device...something Sig Sauerish, if you will.
I agree that these newer devices are bug ridden and do not function as advertised. My original Pocket PC Phone Edition was more useful than my Wizard is. If I hadn't broke it, I would not have bought a new one.
That said I, too, first bought a different device, the PDA2K. It just worked. No problems at all. Send/receive faxes, instant messaging, email, internet, great phone signal, bluetooth handsfree...but the keyboard! I just couldn't get used to it. Why did I trade in and buy the Wizard? I was stooooopid! I wanted the keyboard and EDGE. But, mostly, the keyboard. When I first saw the photos of it, I fell in love. It was, I thought, perfect! So I called up the dealer and he agreed to send me a KJAM for $350.00 and my PDA2K.
Now, here's just how stupid I was...I didn't even read the specs thoroughly enough to know that the Wizard was smaller. When I rec'd it, I was shocked! I liked the bigger size screen. A lot. Doh! What an idiot.
But, hey, that has nothing to do with the fact that the Wizard is not fully functional as delivered. That it's slooooow. That the speakerphone is a useless piece of advertisement for HTC/Imate. That the sound quality is crap, at best. That the phone doesn't have the ability to power up to a signal that's only slightly weak. That the dual core proc. is divided to be used separately by the phone and pc. That sometimes it needs to be rebooted just to get a signal, or for the bluetooth to work, or because the screen is pixelated. That you need to buy a 3rd party app. just to back it up. That A/S 4.x is also junk.
Why, oh why, didn't they just make a PDA2K with a Wizard keyboard? LOL
HTC/iMate, you got my last dollar, hope you spent it wisely.
But, this is a developer kit and likely virtual CE6.

but only theoretically sad you. How do you get support for unpublished operating system? I think Windows Mobile systems produced especially for devices.
Now,
If I try install Windows Mobile 2006 to my BlueAngel there is no drivers in wm2006 of Blueangel hardwares ( Bluetooth, Phonesupport etc... )
I think so..
CE 6 Has a slew of improvements, and amongst others:
* number of concurrent process increased from 32 to 32000
* mem allocation limit increased from 32MB to 2GB per process
* strict separation between user mode and kernel mode
* user mode drivers
The changes tap everywhere, including driver achitecture. I bet WM5-2003 BA drivers won't be compatible with this beast... unfortunately.

That's the whole point - IF you can get the drivers, ie if your manufacturer releases a properly made version of the OS, there's no reason why it shouldn't work on current hardware. However, like the WM5 for BA hack, it's clear that incomplete OS releases aren't perfect.
But, WM6 is working on current hardware, but it's up to the manufacturer to finalise it and release it, and somehow make some money out of their effort.

I would love to see it, but I would want to see a 100% functionally complete release of a WM5 ROM for the BA first. We are closer than ever now, with just a few niggles pending...
Imagine everyone goes ballistic on CE 6 and completely forgets about WM5. We are SO close to a perfect ROM, with the latest Helmi releases... I hope the WM5 BA ROMs get the last pieces in place before the first WM6 devices are released, so that we can have a great upgrade in our hands, and then this forum will EXPLODE with development efforts trying to shoehorn WM6 on Wizard/Universal/TyTN/Excalibur/Artemis/etc/etc/etc...

Hey, I wrote etc/etc/etc, have you missed it?
I wanted to highlight that we now have a somewhat small enthusiast community revolving around putting WM5 on a machine which only has official support for 2003SE (but packs more than enough punch to run WM5, thank you ). With the coming of CE6/WM6, ALL machines which officially run WM5 will fall into the same state of the BA, and we will have a much bigger community trying to get CE6 run run on much wider number of devices.
I believe the way to go with CE6/WM6 in xda-developers will be to have a single ROM Kitchen effort, because there are several different machines which are more-or-less the same platform. We have a TI OMAP 850 family (wizard/artemis etc), an Intel Xscale family, (himalaya/blue angel/universal etc), Now a Samsung family starting up (TyTN), I think it will make sense to have a more unified effort to put CE 6 on all these devices. I think a ROM Kitchen which covers all different devices would save duplicated effort for all devices...

Seems some ppl don't share my view... but with every release we get more features and fixes available. In the last ROMs we achieved an incredible speed boost thanks to mamaich pagepool tweak. We still have a few issues but it is very usable as-is. The next release will integrate a few fixes in power management and wifi, and we also have an alternative bluetooth stack. There is also Connection Sharing which is replacing WModem for PCs to browse using GPRS (for AKU 3.0+). We still have the problem that MS stack has a hard time on running A2DP, and the alternative Broadcom is having issues with Headset/Handsfree, but there is ongoing effort to solve it. The application compatibility problem is something inherent to the upgrade to AKU 3.0, thus not specific to BA. What else do you want?

Bro it will not rock the skyes for you I'm sure!
Remember every next generation operating system is meant for better, bigger and fater devices. So WM6 will have more benefits for the newer devices not for ours. So at some point it might be better to have AKU 4 instead of the original WM6. Remember when Microsoft released the XP. Most of the people were angry because of the slugishnes... right. OK couple of years later with better machines more mem etc. nobody was complaining. Now I got my Vista and it is OK. Not faster not slower, though I put 2G of mem. Now everibody is angry because there is no drivers, when you put it on 512MB mem (where the XP excels) it will be dead as a rock.
You got my point. It is the same with the phones. Now the phones are PC and the WM5,6,7 is the OS. It was not long time ago when the PC were 500Mhz right? Our generation phones are 200Mhz. the next ones are 500Mhz and the next gen of mem is 16GB 32GB so that's what the WM6 is meant for. So don't expect too mutch. After all the OS is combination of functionality, speed, look and reliability. Ask me if I will change my company's 50 PCs with the Vista? It will not happen untill 2 years, maybe 3! After all I just want my business runing. And if I use Windows Mobile for business, ie. sales, remote access, DB etc. I will prefer cheaper mobile devices (older is OK) but with the functionality of WM6 ie. AKU5,6,7 i dont care. So this forum will stay here for long long time and it will not stop working on AKUs for WM5 until there are devices that can not sustain WM6. Of courece it will cover WM6 with AKUs...
Cheers

Cheers

Blue angel has 400 mHZ
I heard that wm6 was designed to work on devices of about 200 mHZ.
I get ur point about the memory though, but we have SD cards
Hey guys, it would be better to first read about something before posting your nice but totally wrong imaginations. WinCE6 is connected with WM6 in no way. WM6 is still based on WinCE5. It is only a bit optimized and "nicefied" version of WM5.
hello everyone!
since two weeks, i am theproud owner of my first pocket pc, a HTC Blue Angel!
i am now running wm2003, but after reading all those posts about upgrading, i am starting to think about doing so myself! but why should i do this?
what are the big advatages of wm2005 compared to wm2003?
are there disadvantages as well? (regarding stability and bugs?)
i would be really glad if yome of the more experienced ba users here could write down their pros & cons for running WM5/WM3 on the BA!
btw: i read thru xplode's upgrading guide (Guide.pdf) and in the end ("side notes") it says, that i could totally screw my ba when i exceed free sectors of the rom while cooking.... what excactly does this mean? and how can i avoid exceeding free sectors?
I am really looking forward to read your opinions about the two os...
THX IN ADVANCE!
krztf
I would definately go for wm5
main reason is the different memory handling
(no more lose of data after battery runs down)
Just download one of the ready made roms versions.
(as I understand, you are not ready to cook your own rom)
and be sure to read the wiki first
(and this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=243732 )
happy flashing
Wout
I could tell you this, my biggest reason to flash my BA to Wm05 because it has a better UI. N my 2nd biggest reason is because a lot of new programs written for wm05
Anyway if you afraid to brick your BA, I suggest you read carefully the wiki n don't use kitchen Rom, just use another rom that already cook by someone else. You could use Rom made by baniaczek or xplode.
I hoped it helps.
Well how should i say... i dont believe anyone here is still using 2003. Would this be enough for you? Try it, if you dont like it, downgrade back to 2003.
WM5 on Blue Angel is nice. But xplode rom and baniaczek rom are not really stable at the moment.
Tried both rom both got different problems... so I recommend you to wait for final release WM5 rom for BA thats free of bug.(Would it happen?)
Else if you wanted to try, you can try upgrading it... its really nice
Main reason is 60mb free ram..
and no more memory lost after battery going down
aha
thanks for all those answers!!!
but to be honest, i am still not sure if i should upgrade or not....
all those postings (here an din other threads) regarding pda overall speed, bluetooth and wifi problems, etc. make me kinda nervous! and i think, i am still anxious about frying my blue angel,... noobish but what can i do!
regarding the advantage of more free ram and no memory loss after battery's empty: is this really true?! always thought, i would need certain hardware as well, to benefit from this features...?
hope this discussion keeps goin'...
regards,krz

I'm using 2003se (rollback wm5->2003), because found some strange problems with baniachek's wm5 bluetooth profiles. ...
all the gory details ....
hi dasboot!
could you please describe those "strange problems"?
btw: does anyone know, if connecting to wlan routers works better with wm2005? as u can read in my other thread HERE, i have serious issues to solve here...
keep on posting!
krz
im rollbacked too.WM5 is nice looking..but for BA useless.
i found that WM3 work much better on it-and more important-the battery time:
wm5=max 8 hours,with mp3 6h
wm3=up to 16h with mp3.normal use 24/36h (older BA )
i use wlan only sometimes on hotspots-and only for e-mails.not a important criteria for me.
but, damn it..i would try out WM6 on it.suddenly it is unable to convert it to BA.
WM5 is not a software, it is one huge BAG!
wm5 is really good and I won't come back to wm2003. I have the R2 by baniaczeck and it works to me like a charm! I advice you to upgrade to wm5
This is where it all began, a rumour.

No more than 5 years back...
and now..We are running Windows Mobile 6.1
for a device for which WM2003SE wasent even officially released
Salute to Himalaya's ( i mean the deice )
Not only 6.1 but with a choice of touch and cube interfaces and programs.
I'm sorry for all those people who just buy an expensive WM6.x device, who simply use it with the standard software, who still constantly need their stylus and who will never find out what they really bought.
I pitty those who still run WM2003 much more...
well....i still got two himalaya
hmmm 2 Hima..thanks to that theif i havent a single
Ather, watch your language in the presence of a lady and a moderator! Please replace that word? BTW I don't know what happened to your Hima?
lol im sorry....edited my post me lady
to me an xda 2 is very cool.
it's my first touchscreen based windows mobile phone.
my first windows mobile phone was a samsung sgh-i300 (I still own it but I don't know where it is, I think on my desktop somewhere)
I came from my first mobile phone for about 10 years to my second one, 4 years later, a sharp... and 2 years later it was a nokia n-gage qd. then half a year later a nokia 9300.. then a nokia n90. then my windows mobile based samsung, half a year later my Sony Ericsson W 810i (don't know why SOny, it was very important to get a new handy soon, because my Samsung was broken at the Samsung Service). Then, just before 2 months, I got my XDA II !!!
I love it. Of course, no hardware-keyboard, no good sound, giant and fat (thats kinda good for me with my big hands )... The screen isn't very bright , but its big. Is it 3 or 3.5" ? Dont know, but it's enough
Thats my story how I came to this xda2. And to me it's like a new device (I mean those Omap CPUs are just the half of this cpu, ram and rom are just okay... sd slot is very good because cheap) so I think it is one of the oldest BUT BEST handhelds ...
hmm if i stated my device history here..i think 2 posts would be enuf
any way yes the xda2 has 3.5" screen..as for the keyboard try using resco full screen kyboard, Touchpal..
u also forgot the camera quality
long live himalaya
ive been using my himalaya for over 2 yrs now, ive seen lot of new pda coming in and coming out, but the style and the functionality of hima can never be beaten, 400 mhz, upgradeable up to 6.5? who knows, by the end of the year, its gonna be upgradeable to windows 7? hahahaha we wish!
unbeatable himalaya
i've bought this at august 2k8.
very satisfied...i choose himalaya based to advice from little brother of XOJ(indonesian ppc community) moderator, he used BA(the legend coz it's the first BA which used 1st HELMI_C wm6(HELMI cooked on that device))&MPX200, and that made me unpatience to have ppc, coz my budget is too low so i decide to bought himalaya for my first ppc and i've never dissapointed.
old hardware but newest software
thanx to all himalaya master who keep himalaya updated
有り難うございます.
(mean thank you in japanese)
happy with himalaya
my 5 hima's working well with thestuf i get here.
he athar you must live in the netherlands there are anough hima's.
but go one whit the job and make the hima life for ever.
regards,
Chris
Indeed, Himalaya is now limited edition. Take care your Hima well cuz there is not going to be a new one for a replacement. I'm finding good condition Hima with all equipments and box as well; I only found good condition BA.
Anyway, cheers Himalaya users.
Himalaya is great device have ever built from HTC and only could compare with his successor Blue Angel as well which running smoothly from WM2003 until WM6.5, perhaps MS or HTC also never imagine that this device still exist even they always create their new OS or device. Easy come but difficult to let it go...that's Himalaya.

Unfortunately our hima is showing its age. More and more are getting broken everyday and difficult to find parts. I gave up the ghost on mine (which is actually my wife's who got a newer pda with WM6) about 3 years ago because of a broken charging/usb slot. Can't find anyone who can fix it since the official support shop closed down before it broke. Was just playing with it with its old WM2003 until I found a group of hima users here and I was directed to someone who has the parts and skills to repair it. After that i read through xda-developers and now I have a WM6.5 powered device! How cool is that? Better than my wife's WM6! My only regret is that back then It was easy to find 2nd hand units at low price but never paid attention to it. now I'm trying to find them and they're all gone. Pity.
What I like most about it? The size of the screen. My eyesight is not exactly what it used to be and having that large screen really helps!
Hei..I think it's a good news...
there are a lot of 2nd himalaya @Indonesia,,
and there is 1 shop i've found who claimed can fix the broken usb/pin from himalaya and they said it'll change with the original part of himalaya.
himalaya
hi
Indeed it's impressive to see WM6.5 run smooth on this device, but I wonder what is the advantage of the himalaya over the alpine, on the paper alpine is more powerfull not ? (or I've missed something). and not WM5 or 6 capable ?
Recently i've tryied a game (krally) on the diamond !!! and the speed difference is incredible the same game on himalaya (sun_dream 6.5) is a LOT smoother and faster (I think a vga screen for this size is very useless)
So I am very happy with himalaya thanks to the comunity to keep it alive !!!
i thought i would give up my himalaya, after all, its heavy, its big, the camera is no good, plus my usb connector pins are broken. luckily i was able to upgrade to wm 6.1 before the pins broke.
just before i was gonna give up my old himalaya, i found something that made me keep it. opera mini. although we could have our choice of browsers for this device, opera mini allowed me to use my hima large screen, touch pad to the fullest, i need not say that im experiencing unlimited internet on less than 10pesos prepaid load. thats 25c US cents for limitless surfing.
i may edit this post later but even though i had to buy a separate batt charger for me hima and 2 extra batts, i still love my hima.
Sorry Tilt, only the newer HTC products will getting the new upgrade.

...you really thought that HTC would do that!? If you thought that you were a dreamer! They like to sell new phones and not an old phone like the Kaiser
Windows Mobile 6.5 works on QVGA?
Out of interest, are any of the devices that will 'officially' be running Windows Mobile 6.5 QVGA? From what I see, the versions of 6.5 cooked into ROMS here are tweaked to fit on the smaller 320x240 screen - but the Touch Diamond 2 and Pro 2 are both WVGA devices with an 800x460 screen resolution aren't they?
If the 'proper' version of 6.5 is designed to work on VGA devices or better only, it's not surprising that HTC aren't planning on offering upgrades to older devices that don't support the higher resolutions. Sure, it can be made to work on older handsets - but not in the way Microsoft probably envisioned for their new release...
I might be wrong and I have my asbestos "flame-proof" jacket on, so I'm ready for the backlash
Actually, Microsoft has said that it will allow official upgrades on current 6.1 devices as long as they have a 400mhz processor and 128mb ram (plus the windows start key). The Kaiser meets all of those requirements, so it is eligible for an upgrade, but that would be at the discretion of HTC/carriers. I doubt that we will ever see an official upgrade due to the age of the Kaiser, but you never know.
More importantly, though, is whether it even matters. Do we even need an official 6.5 for the Kaiser to build off of, or can we do an equal/better job with the dumped 6.5 roms already being ported to our phone? I guess that would be a question I would put to our chefs out there.
Would it really be an 'upgrade' though if HTC provided it?
If the HTC Official WWE WM 6.1 'upgrade' for the TyTN II is anything to go by, I'd run a mile from any HTC provided WM 6.5 release for the TyTN II anyway. Apart from the fact there were so many bugs in the official WM 6.1 upgrade when compared to the relatively stable WM 6.0, it's clear from HTCs continual refusal to provide full (not partial) graphics driver support for even much newer devices, that they don't learn lessons from the past (or if they do, they don't act on them).
Given the TyTN IIs age now, I suspect if there was a further upgrade to come even the apprentice programmers' time would be considered to valuable for such a task and GPS, graphics performance and things like screen flashes when coming out of standby (all things still not fixed after nearly a year since the first WM 6.1 upgrade was released) would take a very low priority. I could be proven wrong but I don't have much faith that the HTC leopard would change its spots

I hope people don't misinterpret what I wrote, I believe the TyTN II was groundbreaking in its day and it certainly offered the right combination of features that other devices didn't have together in the one package. The problem is that there are a number of inexactitudes when comparing the actual device with all the advertising that was out for the device when first released (what I relied on for my purchase decision). Both advertiising from HTC and from Qualcomm the chip maker. Since then I've seen no indication that HTC is interested in maximising all the potential in this device to try and live up to those advertising claims and if anything their UK released ROM upgrade for my device actualy makes it worse. It's a sad state of affairs where a buggy 'upgrade' still hasn't been fixed nearly a year later and I'm fed up with sending letters to HTC which aren't listened to (not to mention the thousands of online petition signatories requesting full driver support for the embedded hardware actually on the device).
As someone who has worked as a computer technician I can tell you it is truely scandalous to release a product complete with an OS that doesn't have full driver support for embedded graphics acceleration and any full sized PC provider would not get away with it. Not only then but also the fact they haven't since come along with an update to address these concerns - hence my lack of faith in this company.
I would assume HTC's refusal to release system drivers would have to do with NDA's they signed with the various component manufacturers. I'm also relatively new to the world of XDA (but not winmo), so I would assume that this topic has been discussed to death on this site before.
@Flying Kiwi: I only had the Hermes for three weeks before I found a kickin deal on a Kaiser, but I have to agree it was a good phone. However, the upgrade to the Kaiser from the Hermes was worth the little extra I paid, if only for the gps and increased ram.
Not to get off topic, but does anyone else find Age of Empires to be incredibly addictive on a PDA?
