Why RAMdisk is lost on soft reset in WM5... - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

with regards to the Ramdisk clearing on soft reset i think i have found the problem, it is more comlicated than i origonally though and atm there is no solution.
While i was away over hte last week i have been expeimenting with the soft/hard resets in WM5, combined with some reg modifications i tried tonight i have come to the following conclusions:
With a BA running WM5 the soft and hard reset are fundamentally different from 2003se. with 2003se a 'soft reset' would keep the ram alive but restart the OS, a hard reset would clear the ram and storage. I noticed that to perform a WM5 'hard reset' there is no need to hold in the power button - it does nothing. a 'soft reset' and the record + camera buttons do exactly the same. So in WM5 there is not a hard and soft reset, only one type of reset and the option to format the storage (restore factory settings) unfortunatly for us this one reset is 'semi-hard' when compaired to 2k3, it doesnt erase the storage, but it does erase the RAM.
Basically with a BA running WM5 there is not currently a way to 'soft reset' int he 2k3 term of the phrase (keeps the ram) and we will allways lose any data/partitions in it on any WM5 reset.
I believe this is due to the fact that native WM5 devices have no need to kepp thier ram alive when reset, so the functionality was not programmed into the core OS and it is way above my skill level to implement it (Maimach , Buzz, if your reading this, please help!).
All is not lost, as a Ramdisk can still be used for tem files and storage, so long as the flags that tll the OS to partition and format it on boot are there (as they currently are).

I am running Helmi's WM5 and my RamDisk does not clear - I am confused.

all i can ask is how? whenever i soft reset (button or applet) the ramdisk is cleared???

I do both ALL the time it seems - my Ramdisk is always there with what I have installed. I try to install everything in there - so if it went missing I would notice right off the bat!
Soft Reset ie: that XP Program that does the Light/Power/Reset like windows XP [hit the reset]. Or poke my stick into the little whole next to the mic. Both ways Ramdisk stays.

this is incredible wierd, as on my BA i get exactly what is descirbed above... maybe mine is faulty

My RamDisk is still there and data not lost.
It is the same as in Himalaya WM5.
Confirm. 8)

I will also confirm.. pressing the reset button does NOT clear the ramdisk.. if the backup battery dies it will though.. Midget.. what WM5 base are you running? Helmi or Bepe?

it has happened to me in all wm5, but i think my bckup battery is faulty o that could be why...

I am running Helmi's WM5 and my Ramdisk does not clear and all contents still there after softrest

ok what i think has happened here is that my ackup battery is duff, anyone know what one i need to buy to replace it?
however what i wrote about the power button not being needed in a hard reset still applies as Black6spdZ tested and confirmed this for me. Just a normaal soft reset and the two side buttons is needed.

The battery you need is VARTA V18HRT
I don't think you need the varta brand name, and i'm assuming that it needs to be a recharable.
I think mine may be dying too because if i take the main battery out for even a mintue it says the backup is critically low.
you can order them here http://www.batterystation.com/varta.htm
and a google search reveals more, but everywhere i've looked it's called a special order battery, so we probably need to round everyone up and do a group buy.
That cover was a pain to get off, just apply steady force with something like this hook and make sure you are not prying against any components (used the sd card slot)

Willpower102- nice post.
My backup battery is behaving very much like yours. Lose power for >30 seconds and you're risking data.
Count me in for 2 batteries on the group buy, assuimg we get enough takers.

great post!
count me in for two if they ship to the uk!

Maybe this could be a solution?
Powering IPOD's !

Backlight/Screen won't stay off, turns back on after only moments!

I've had this tilt for a couple of days now and this new screen problem only started happening today. My screen/backlight turn back on moments after being turned off, either by the power button on the side or after the short timeout.
I've searched through the forums to no avail. My bluetooth and WiFi are already turned off and I do not have any programs running in the background.
The problem only appeared today and the only program I've installed today is Xpress Mail. Could Xpress Mail be causing this problem?
Any suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated. This little glitch is getting on my nerves pretty bad.

This sounds like the opposite issue of the known backlight error.
You can try this to see if it might happen to also solve your issue.
http://www.htc.com/us/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=67&cat=all
I just gave that a try but it didn't work. I'm still having the same problems as before.
I also uninstalled Xpress Mail but that didn't work either.
Any other suggestions??
The only other thing i could recommend is a hard reset. Have you tried that yet ? ( It will restore the phone back to factory )
To do this you will need to hold the stylus in while pressing these buttons ( Red dots ) :

Maybe I'll tackle that tomorrow. I've been adding and customizing things obsessively for a few days, wiping the slate clean might take some getting used to.
Thanks for your input!
Anytime! Thats what we are here for I just wish I have a better answer for you. Something somewhere seems to have changed a registry setting it seems. Easiest way to fix is to reset
On the plus side, it gives you the opportunity to install a custom rom that is much faster and has no bloatware ( If you feel brave enough to try ). Flashing sounds much more scary than it really is. There is almost no way to mess up the phone
One more thing. Even if you dont flash a new OS, you can still get rid of the bloatware ( Factory branding with all the apps you will never use ). Just after it hard resets just as the screen changes to " Customizing in 3 seconds", just poke your stylus in the hole and reboot it. It might take you a few times because I hear there is a split second but trust me it will make things better not being there!
Goodluck!
Check my 2 posts in the thread on page 1 and page 2. Sounds like you have a problem with a stuck camera button
Frank
The button for my camera seems pretty regular. My phone stays off longer than yours in that video, fordmav. Also, on my phone when the phone is off and I push the camera button it does not wake up.
Its looking like a hard reset is in my future.
I had this problem after upgrading to 6.1. It came down to a tweak or set of tweaks that I had applied, but I don't recall what they were. I've caused it using tweaks programs, applying multiple tweaks that caused no issue before. Going back in & undoing the tweaks got rid of the issue. So did a hard reset before I figured it out.
If you do hard reset, make backups periodically as you're installing stuff/tweaking successfully. That way, you can go back to a good point if necessary.
well I don't know what I did but the screen and backlight are remaining off, at least so far today. hopefully that's the end of the story...

Problems with USB/Screen - Help!

On Tuesday I managed to drop my Kaiser in some water. As quick as I could I fished it out, removed the battery etc and put out to dry.
When it finally got to start again I noticed there was no USB - I tried re-flashing using the SD Card which eventually seemed to work, however I still have no USB. The phone charges fine via the usb connector but there's something up with the data lines - No PCs see anything connected to it and even the bootloader just shows serial - no USB.
This wasn't too bad as I can synchronise with my PC via Bluetooth which works fine, as does WiFi, GPS and normal phon operation.
Everything seemed ok until yesterday when the touch screen stopped responding. The phone itself works fine but I can only interact with the hard keys/keyboard.
Anyone have any ideas apart from just see if it magically starts working again? I'm not sure if the flash could be an issue as I had problems trying to flash - kept on getting failures flashing from the SD Card. I'm currently on 3.56, radio 1.65.28.25, rom of 3.57.502.2 (21159 WM6.5)
It would be nice to have the USB but that's not as important as the touchscreen. I'm learning to get by without either...
Help!!! I have tried searching but not come up with anything that works
Dude you dropped your phone in water, it's going to break.
What rom did you flash ? That looks like an AT$T rom with and AT&T Spl, but I see you are on Orange. And where did you come up with WM 6.5 in all this. Please tell us what rom and where did you get it, did you or do have Hard Spl on your phone and if your phone is stock or cooked ?
But...
I would understand it not working at all, but the way that everything seemed to work apart from the usb connection seems weird to me, but then I am not an electronics/hardware engineer, just a software engineer! I've seen elsewhere on the site that a screen that wasn't responding to touch seemed to sort itself days later so there's still hope....
OK... additional information if it helps... the phone itself is a Vodafone v1615 (Kaiser) which I've used since I've got it with an Orange 3G SIM (kindly provided by work). The phone had Hard-SPL 3.56, radio 1.65.28.25 as recommended for Anryl's 61129 WM 6.5 Rom. Everything worked fine before the water incident - I've been (ROM) flashing since I got the phone been through iterations of Dutty's ROMs, HyperDragon's to this one.
Like Chumley said, " you dropped it in water " so at this point, do a hard reset , keep your fingers crossed and que sera, sera.
oh lets go for a swim..

I just started another thread and then saw this one...
So I accident dropped my Touch into some water the other day.... Everything works except the screen... It works in somespots it seems but others Not.
Anything I can do to fix it or is it pooched for good. I guess it sounds like just try a hard reset and pray for the best.
Screen fixed!
Just to give an update, after a few days of learning how to use all the applications without a touch screen (for the times I really needed to, I used MyMobiler), yesterday a guy at work said that he had seen a suggestion to put the phone in a bag of rice! Thinking I had nothing to lose, last night (over a week since the kaiser got submerged) I put the phone in a sealed bag of rice for a couple of hours.
After flashing a couple of ROMs, I reset without the storage card in and clicked on the screen to calibrate the screen - and it worked!! I had put a blank file called welcome.not in the root of the storage card which normally bypassed the calibration - a very useful tip if you don't have a touch screen.
So now, I have a kaiser with a functioning touchscreen after being totally submerged in water a week back. The only issue I seem to still have is that I can't connect to a pc using the usb cable, although I can charge using it. HardSPL doesn't show USB when invoked The other thing is that sometimes the storage card isn't recognised, although it usually is when the kaiser is plugged into the usb to charge or a usb converter in connected. Slightly wierd that one.

Broken USB & bootloader broken, where to go next?

I just got back from holiday, and whilst on holiday i was using the ear phones & music player on the phone. I made the mistake of sitting down, catching the ear phones plug & bending it whilst it was plugged in. This has damaged the USB port. It still charges, but the ear phone/connectivity pins have been broken within the phone.
Too make matters worse, i reset the phone soon after (soft reset) only to be greeted with the screen below. I have tried a hard reset, loading the bootloader (camera, power & reset buttons) and every other combination of buttons iv found on the internet. So far nothing has helped/changed it. The screen doesnt rotate with the keyboard, and the off button doesnt work. (turns phone on, but not off).
I am tempted to send the phone off to HTC, as it is under warrenty but i dont know whether the fact it has a custom ROM on will effect it at all. iv had minor problems with the screen i would ask them to look at aswel.
Would a broken USB be fixable under warrenty? Then would a custom ROM (even if it doesnt boot) cause a fuss? Then finally, is there anyway to flash a new ROM to the phone without using the USB card?
many thanks guys, any advice is appreciated

iv read up on flashing a new rom via my sd card, but i am really struggling to find a the .nbh file (which i then rename). I dont spose anyone can link me to a standard .nbh file could they? Hopefully this will enable me to get it next to standard prior to sending it off to HTC.
thanks guys
if its an .exe rom update, use winrar to extract it and there you'll find the .nbh
I had the same problem, broken usb on at&t tilt, flashed a shipped rom and got a new device via a warranty exchange. I couldn't get the SPL back to original but the guys at the device support center didn't notice.
thank you for the reply mate, was just what i needed!
Unfortunatly it didnt work, and even having put the file on my SDcard and resetting the phone it still boots to the tri colour screen. Got my hopes up, as the phone did load the file and run through it...only for me to reset it and it go back to the tri colour screen.
Will the HTC device centre likely accept it all the same?
cheers guys
Tried it again, this time resetting it, loading up from the SDcard then taking the card out before resetting. Now im getting:
'' Upgrade ROM code error Please try again ''
RUUNBH has also appeared in the top right hand corner, with the same tri coloured screen.
As this is not covered by warrenty (spoke to HTC today) im a bit worried about what i can do. Does anyone have any ideas i could try?
thanks

Virus or short circuit?

Hi All,
I've got a problem with my TyTn II (I've got it in 2007). 4 days ago my Kaiser acted funny. I started to hear sound like pressing of the calling button. Then the phone started to lock itself Since then I've lost the function of all the answer/reject, softkeys, start, IE, messaging and ok button. At this point I can't do a hardware hard reset since it requires both softkey function. After around 12 hours I began to regain the function of those keys, didn't do anything but the problem persist after around 6 hours or so.
Now I've done a hard reset a few times. Even though it was freshly hard reset the problem still persist. Is it a virus or hardware malfunction?
Thanks
Well it's definatly not a virus... There has only been about 3 recognized WM virus's that do not translate to the same as we expect being computer users, also if you think of a hard-reset to be the same as doing a format reinstall on a computer then it would eradicate the virus.
Start\Settings\Clear Storage 1234 will perform a hard-reset without the need to use hardware buttons.
Try that.
Sounds like a hardware issue....
Try flash stock ROM again also.
LOL he said short circuit or a virus, BWAHAHAHAHAHA

Hmmm...go to MikeChannon's hardware page http://www.mikechannon.net/page1.html and find the link for the Kaiser, TyTN II, Tilt yada yada. Get that d-pad out and clean it all up.
These things are really not that hard to "disassemble, Stephanie" (Nice one Chumley!)
A tiny phillips and two tiny sizes of Torx®...with maybe a tiny flathead for some gentle prying, I used my fingernails!...along with some patience is really all you need.
I offer one more tip...MAGNIFICATION! Use it, even if you CAN see already...
If you still have a problem after that, well...then you may actually have a problem.
No fear, deflower that thing. Just a thought. Okay bye...

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the input. I've done the clear storage. Now my TyTn II is working like a charm. However the thing that was interesting was.. after doing the hard reset and reinstalling several software + reinstalling SKtools, my TyTn II went haywire again.. but after hard resetting again without reinstalling SKtools my PDA is fine now. I've been using it without any problem for couple of days now. When I trace back, the problem really began after I installed SKtools from a cab file. Could it be that the cab file is not good so it affected my TyTn II?

EMERGENCY! reset completely resets phone! erases contacts etc!

WTF?! starting yesterday, every time my phone resets it completely restores my phone as if it's the first boot everytime! It's happened with 2 different roms. I'm eligable for an upgrade but I'm trying to hold out for the touchpro2 for att to come out... please advise!
WTF?!? starting today, i can no longer use my mind reading skillz!!!
plz post more information, ESPECIALLY when starting a NEW thread, ESPECIALLY when this is a common problem with quite a few new WM6.5 ROMs and ESPECIALLY because there is a known workaround listed in the FAQs of the affected ROMs. have you read those FAQs? have you read the threads for the ROMs?
Yes I have oh mighty computer nerd that sits at a keyboard and spits out insults so he feels better about himself! Turns out I have to get into a bootloader and run some program except that I also can't get into bootloader by holding down camera and power buttons.. another problem I've searched but found no answer to. Also after checking the kaiser FAQ and the FAQ for the rom I'm using I couldn't find the answer to this problem.. would love to try :
Procedure:
1. bring the device to bootloader.
2. Launch ActiveSync on PC
3. Go to connection settings
4. Uncheck the Allow USB Connection
5. Now, run mtty1_1_.42_538 on PC.
6. CMD>task 29
7. Flash the ROM of your choice.
And, Voila!!! the device is back to stable condition. (I hope)
As my device is running now on my own cooked ROM for the past few hours and no prob at all......
but like I said I can't get into bootloader. If anyone else has any ideas or can link me to a solution, I would love nothing more than to be proven an idiot and get my phone up and running.

Why in the heck would anyone come HERE with a Heart Attack Emergency...first they would have to do a search and read 75 pages of information about heart attacks, then, after having attempted 1934 different variations of CPR, the poor f***er is dead!!! Heck, all we had to tell him was "You can't do CPR on a duck."
