I ordered the TomTom + Wireless GPS about a week ago from MobilePlanet and they sent me vesion 2.24 of the Navigator. I quickly discovered that a newer version 3 exists.. I tried to contact TomTom about an upgrade but they say my product code for Navigator USA is not eligible for the upgrade to 3... can anyone shed light on what's going on here?? thanks!
Yeah, you've been ripped off. Get a refund and buy version 3.
I have v3 but never used the v2 so not sure of the differences.
being ripped off depends on the price you paid.
personally I would not give much for a version 2 today . . .
I have no experience with TomTom before 3, but everyone who has claim there are major improvements (stability and map quality).

There are some relatively small differences. I would not be able to explain why they have called it version 3 instead of 2.5.
I guess it has something to do with the map format which is not compatible between 2.4 and 3.0.
All the overlay files (freeware add on to TomTom) seem not to be version specific.
My advice is: Get refund and buy version 3 to allow you to get next update at cheaper price, else stay with version 2.4 has it is great.

UPDATE - I just called MobilePlanet to send this back and get version 3 and the customer service rep told me that TomTom has not released version 3 to USA distributors as of yet and that was why I got version 2. They informed me that serveral customers have called regarding this and they were aware of it. Any thoughts? Has anyone purchased version 3 from a US distributor?
Mobile Planet responded correctly. Version 3 is not available in the US as yet. Rumors that I've heard/read are conflicting: TomTom may release v3 in the US or they will wait and do a v4 release everywhere. I'd suggest emailing TomTom & see what their response is.
db
I've looked at the US version of TomTom on their web site.
The printscreen of the US version are of version 2.xx not 3.03

the main problem that I am having is that once in a while the software will show me floating around on the screen in random positions.. it's doesn't appear to be readings from my BT GPS receiver (TomTom model) because I can soft-reset the XDAII and the software shows my correct position again, but I must perform a soft-reset and can't just exit and restart Navigator... anyone else have this happen?
There is NO Version 3 for the US and there isn't going to be. TomTom are moving towards a common navigation engine that is already available in the PalmOS, GO and Smartphone platforms.
The next release will be a PocketPC version of this to replace TomTom 3 in the EU and TomTom 2 in the US.
There is no release timeline for this but expect news before Christmas.
Jameskk, I had that problem when I had bluetooth tools installed, once I deinstalled it everything was ok, do you have the latest gps driver for your version?
I may have to switch networks be cause of poor coverage so am considering the MDA Vario 3 from T-Mobile, I have also briefly tried the Trinity (HTC P3600 Vodafone) using a 3 Sim.
I have had a quick search but cant find the answers and time is running short to make the switch so please forgive me if I have not spent enough time looking.
The Questions are on T-Mobile it has no mention of Tomtom/Co-pilot satnav as being supplied built into Rom or otherwise on a card. Have looked at the HTC website manual and it appears that it can be used on internal Gps receiver and is installed via a Cab file.
The very poor T-Mobile manual only viewable on line seems awful.
So can someone confirm the UK T-Mobile version can be used either with software internally or from SD card and is not a cut down version with no Hardware Gps receiver built in
Have UK T-mobile slowed down and restricted its performance by there own additions requirements. Can this be overcome by flashing Rom etc.

The Vario III has the GPS receiver onboard but does not come with the TomTom trial (which the HTC Kaiser does).
The ROM itself is very close to the original HTC rom and there is not really anything taken out / added.
I can confirm that Tomtom works fully with the internal GPS on the Vario 3. Set tomtom to 'other NMEA GPS', rate to 4800 and COM4, and it works great!
Hi All - I can see a few post about the above software. Tom Tom are saying that V6 Navigator is not officially compatible with the Kaiser. Can I assume because there are manly positive posts about it here that it DOES work OK on the device?
I'm with O2 and although they sell (and I've bought) 'Co-Pilot', I been having a few problems with it triggering the message 'the server has been reset...blah...blah...all your data needs to be resynchronised' when I try and sync the device with Outlook. The resyncing is a L-o-n-g process and it wipes out all my quick dials too - ouch!) Co-Pilot Support have confirmed it's a known problem on some devices..so I'm not looking to fix this as O2 are sending me a credit)
Thanks
I got the "o2 Stellar" yesterday and TomTom 6 works fine.. Just find which com port the GPS is assigned to in Start -> Settings -> External GPS .. Then just assign TomTom to that com port via the configuration - I used "Other NMEA GPS Receiver" but I dont think it matters which option you choose aslong as you choose the right port.
TomTom 6 works brilliantly well on my "Stellar".
Got TomTom working on my AT&T Tilt. Pick other GPS receiver, Baud 9600, COM4.
Well, seeing as HTC sell the Tytn II with a trial version of Tomtom, you would rather expect it to work!
Got tomtom v6 working perfectly fine on my tilt with duttys v3 rom. Like posted above, most likely its com 4. Initial start takes about 30 seconds but after that full blast reception.

The Tytn II ships with a "Taster" edition of TomTom 6 (version 6.032). Thus I expect TomTom support the platform
Actually I have a "Pukka" copy of the "Navigator 6 software and maps of western Europe", and have raised a few calls about the software (the version on my CD shipped with V6.010, so I asked for latest specifying my exact device, and was pointed to the "downloads" area of tomtom website (version 6.030 is there))

T-Mobile now offer Co-Pilot with its Tytn II varient (MDA Vario III)
Having had a quick "play" with a co-pilot system, it looked fancier (and has a better "Licensing" policy than tomtom) however I preferred the TomTom software (my Girlfriend has an old TomTom Go)
I have TomTom traffic and Safety camera's options purchase and find these excellent
If you can test co-pilot you might prefer it. I preferred tomtom
Always worked flawlessly on my HTC Kaiser, never messed with gps settings either
Tom Tom and Co Pilot
Thanks everyone. I'm going to purchase Tom Tom as Co Pilot caused a few serious problems on my Stellar
But you should have TomTom already if you own Kaiser device...

true... plus, there's always *other* ways of getting TOMTOM
Older version also works, but the 6.032 has "Build-in GPS receiver" option. In older you need to manually set it up as other NMEA receiver. In Poland EraGSM (soon to be T-Mobile) provide Vario III with full version of TT6 with regional maps.
I'm running TomTom that's "for the Trinity" from HTC e-club. I used the same thing on my Trinity and it auto picked up the internal, and has internal GPS setting. On my Tilt, this option is not available, but picked other, baud 9600, com 4 and it works nice and fast
tomtom 6
Hey all, been running tomtom 6.032 on my o2 Stellar with absolutly no problems at all!! It is by far the best sat nav for pocket pc. I have tried most programs out there but tomtom wins hands down for speed, stability and performance.. 10/10
I agree duncstar- have tried iGo and Navigon but TomTom is far quicker and more stable.
Out of interest, can someone calify the differences between the TomTom Taster and regular TomTom?

No its not - its not special in any way. You have to buy any of the maps you wish to use (except for the 'free' city map they give you).
I installed TomTom Navigator 6 V6.010 with 6.75 US/Canada maps into my Tilt...everything works except one feature in the point of interest. It doesn't list nearby "stores" in the Los Angeles. Only show Apple etc. stores that are in the east coast, what gives? What can I do to fix this? thanks
Thanks for help

Thanks Duncstar for your help. Especially as you're an O2 user in the UK too Thanks also to everyone else who offered advice and pointed me in the right direction. I did read some stuff about 'maps not showing up'. Duncstar - Did yours work literally 'straight out of the box'?
I have an imported Kaiser here in the US. Tom Tom works perfectly. I bought the usa/canada maps from amazon for $125. Installed it and no issues. I did have to select the gps, used 57,000 baud, com 4 and it's great.
There's also a "quick gps" application on your phone. Use it to help zero in the gps even better. It wants to run once a week.
I also bought and installed the Mr. T voice and I'm officially the biggest nerd on my block now. Turn Right Sucka!
Oh yeah, I"m not sure which version of TT6 was on my kaiser. When I installed the purchased software, it loaded up version 6.010. I had to go to tom tom's website and download the 6.030 version.
Right here we go folks: TomTom 6. Kasier (MDA III) 6.1 (no thrills ROM).
I installed TomTom onto my first Kaiser (standard ROM) no problems and it worked fine until the unit died. I have a replacment device and have requested a new code from TomTom. They have said that the MDA III is not compatible and pointed me to the list of devices which are compatible. What's on there, yes the MDA III, TyTnII etc. I pointed this out to them and they said it was wrong, the device does not work with TomTom and they wont give me a new code until I provide proof of another device (other than the Kasier)!!
Has anyone else had issues or is it TomTom support being lame as usual?
Thanks.
What a load of rubbish. If TOMTOM do not provide support for the HTC Kaiser/TyTN II/Vario III, then why do most Shops (eXpansys, totalPDA, etc.) sell it with a trial version? I'd tell them to get stuffed and send you the code, they're just being idiots...
Wow! They are being incredibly obtuse. It's their compatibility list, it's hardly your fault that it's 'wrong' and in any case I don't think it is. I think you need to speak to a different support person, somebody that knows their arse from their elbow.
Yep, I think I'll give them a call and get it sorted. Watch this space...
Hi,
In France, i encountered worries with tomtom traffic (nearly lost a week
of "subscription fee") because of Tomtom servers failure(guessed, they never admit clearly any reponsability), and followed a kind of farcical exchanges with their support, but they didnt offer me a real kind /commercial gesture(2-3 days of traffic for a week lost !) and they shown themselves arrogant, obtuse, taking me for an idiot.
Not at all paying careful attention to their...paying customers.
Good luck so !
Regards
This just in from TomTom support:
"I have confirmed again with our PDA Specialist and they have stated that there is a huge difference between the MDA III and the MDA Vario III. Since you have the MDA Vario III we are unable to provide you with another activation code."
Odd how they list the TyTn II as a compatible device.
That's ridiculous. I can understand your frustration! Here's the eXpansys Kaiser page, do a Ctrl+F for TOMTOM and it states under the Technical Details:
• GPS
- Internal GPS antenna
- Standalone GPS abd A-GPS mode
- TomTom Navigator 6 Edition (TomTom 6 Taster Edition)
Have you tried showing TOMTOM Support anything like this (which clearly proves that the Kaiser is supported/compatible)?
Yes I emailed them a link to the £500+ package that expansys do with TT6. Lets see what they say this time!
This is a joke, surely:
"The compatibility of your device has been confirmed from our Technical Support Team who are Specialist in PDA products."
Time to phone them and go beserk I reckon!
It's the kind of situation where you want to laugh and cry at the same time. There's not really much left to do apart from argue the toss with them untill they oblige. Good luck and let us know how it go's.
Another update to the saga. I spoke to TomTom supoprt over the phone who were very helpful and said they wold request a change of device code and get back to me. Just got this back from them:
"Unfortunately it has been confirmed again that the Vario III is not on our compatibility list, therefore you will not be able to run Tom Tom software.
The reason your device code keeps changing is due to the fact that device is incompatible.
We cannot change the device code on your account to reflect an incompatible device."
Anyone want to buy TomTom6??!
Finally I'm getting somewhere! TomTom have said they will reactivate my software, but only if I do not request any further support for the device, and do not ask for another code if its doesnt work.
TomTom Navigator
Hi,
The reason they don't 'support' it or refuse to give out the code, is because every time you change the ROM, one that has a new build, then the TomTom server will think you're trying to use their software on a different device and so on, this is especially the case with the TomTom Plus services. I had this problem with my VPA (HTC TyTN) and they would not re-create the code for my TomTom Plus (Traffic Updates). Luckily I knew the old build, so I searched for cooked ROM's that were using that build.
Regards,
Thats a bummer. Why do they tie the code to software, surely they could base it on the IMEI number as that is fixed and does not change regardless of which software you are running.
RE tomtom device code
HI I had same problem with my activation code when I changed rom have found a crack which gives u the code when u try to start maps it gives you device code and u run this software it gives you the activation code. Does it make sense.
RAJ ( I will post this here if needed pls ask instructions are included takes 2 mins)
I am not sure what everybody is talking about
I have ATT tilt with Dutis ROM loaded
and TomTom 6 is working splendidly except may be for the fact that it takes a minute or so to get the satelite fix
but other then that perfect GPS
I would like to find a better software more user firendly
but since I have the maps for US canada and most of europe I gues tom tom is the GPS of choice for me now
Tomtom traffic services
I think the Tomtom support is the worst i've ever seen. For my Kaiser, I know werre the problem is, but don't know how to solve it. When you launch to the traffic information update, the software sends a PHP request to the server including your login, password and this is the problem a serial number that should be your IMEI, but the application sends a wrong number (the first digit is wrong). If I send the same request with my good IMEI through IE I have a message like "enjoy with your promotion". If you know in what file or registry key Tomtom stores this number I think it will not be so hatd to change it to the correct one and find an access to the traffic server.

I did as much searching as I can handle but could not find a resolution. Tried to install 6.032, get a message saying "Unable to install application. Please update your device ROM to the required version before trying again."
I have TomTom 6 v 6.010 installed w/o an issue. I currently have the standard AT&T 6.1 ROM. The only issue is that it takes 3 to 4 minutes to acquire a signal. However this seems to be a product of WM 6.1.
Hi All
Before you think about a Sat Nav package for your diamond be aware that there is an issue with HTC Touch Diamonds and Copilot live 7.0. If you install the product the routing becomes (to put it politely) eratic and insane, avoiding motorways and taking B roads instead of A roads and it doesn't take advantage of the Diamond's two tier geo positioning.
The issue is you need a new version (not bad news you say? - you have to pay full price for it!)
If you have already purchased your copy for PDA and are intending to transfer the license you now have to buy a whole new license! There is no upgrade for existing users
- BOOOOO HISSSSSS ALK.COM!!!!!!!! Update: There is no need to buy the new version - ALK Support are trying to resolve the isssue
UPDATE: 23-Aug-08
ALK Support have now offered a refund as the issue I have turns out not to require the purchase of a new version of software (but there is still no upgrade for previous versions on the site [yet]) for the device although their support team sent that as a resolution - see later in this thread.
Yours
Leon
You don't need a new version. Copilot can be moved from device to device. In the product you can deactivate from one device and apply to another.
I don't have the routing issues you are talking about either.
I don't have the issues you mentioned but mine is a recently purchased Diamond edition. I doubt there are many differences between the two CoPilot Live 7 versions.
I Installed the version that came with my Orbit 2 (Not sure if it was v6 or v7) and it seemed to work fine, Once Copilot Central was installed on my PC it automatically updated it with new features (definatly v7 now), I don't think its the Diamond version but I don't see why you need a diamond version as the original works fine In every way. Even subscribed to traffic now which works suprisingly well, got me out of alot of jams.
Rich
EDIT: Just been on a trip to the Lake District and have now experienced some eratic routing which was very annoying. I couldn't work out what it was trying to do most of the time, but it seems to overcomplicate the route instead of taking simpler more direct routes. Not Happy at the moment!!!

Hi, I work at ALK, and I would like to confirm officially that our existing customers are absolutely able to transfer their CoPilot Live 7 license from an existing device to an HTC Touch Diamond. Customers must deactivate from their original device first though. There is no need to purchase an additional license.
CoPilot's features, functionality and routing are not affected by a transfer to the Touch Diamond - our standard product is compatible.
We have however released a special DVD edition of CoPilot Live that copies and installs CoPilot software and mapping to the Touch Diamond's internal storage automatically. It is an solution to enable new customers to get up and running.
Hope this clarifies.
David
Thank you for clarifying this David - it's always appreciated to see vendors showing their faces from time to time in public forums... it reminds us all there are humans behind the corporate name!
I have a question if I may - have ALK considered making a trial version of CoPilot available? I am very interested in the product but you hear so many conflicting opinions from other users (this thread is a good example) it's impossible to really know for sure how well it will suit my needs. The same can be said for all the other competing products also so I'm not singling you out, but as you're here!
I dare say that, rightly or wrongly, some of the personal justifications some people make for installing pirated software may well stem from the lack of such trial versions... and once it's on the device it may be beyond some to actually then stump up the cash if they do find they like it.
I know you may well not be able to respond in an official capacity but if you could at least pass the issue back as a requested user requirement that'd be much appreciated!
Mathew
Could someone confirm what the latest version of Copilot 7 actually is?
Currently on my device I have the following version info:
Version: 7.7.0.134
Data: NAVTEQ.EU.07Q1.2.2.2.2
Could someone just have a check to see what version they have?
PS: I'm running on a Touch Pro, not experienced any issues yet but then I've not done a proper trip yet with this device either.

There is a Touch Diamond version (although the only change over the standard version is the install).
I'm running the standard version and it works just fine - VGA and landscape support.
Routing is fine and I don't have any issues with it. There may be a slight lag (maybe half a second out) between position and actual, but that seems to be the Diamond GPS rather than Copilot as others have said they have the same issue on Tomtom etc.
As for traffic, sorry you have to subscribe as mentioned above, but it is there and will come via GPRS/3G.

An Update
Hi All
I read all the responses I have seen and agree with all of them - you should *not* need to purchase a new DVD, copilot central does indeed install a generic version on the Diamond.
PLEASE NOTE: It is worth posting as a quote the support message (pertinent bits in bold) I got then it is worth mentioning that the support guys have had a rethink, made contact and offered me a refund after having recommended the purchase as the only fix.
Fair play to ALK, europe. They are now working with me to resolve the issue. I have now updated to a ROM with updated drivers (Bepe 0.99dx) and am loading from the DVD I purchased. I am now running the diamond specific release 7.7.1.280 navteq.eu.07q3.v7.1.11.4.3.a
Here's the thread:
Subject “Hi
My Copilot 7 live routing refuses to route if there is a motorway or motorway junction involved! For example, sitting at J17 of the M4 and asking CoPilot to route to my home (1 mile from J16) it chose to add a full 25 miles to the route going north and avoiding any motorway junctions. When leaving the motorway it sent me north rather than south and suggested a route which added a further 5 miles at that point.
The device has given nothing but outlandish routes since I applied the update that the Copilot desktop software suggested!
Any ideas, I am furious with the thing right now - where can I download the previous version that works properly from!??”

Version 7.7.0.134 is the generic CoPilot build which is not the correct build for the HTC Diamond which is why you are getting these issues as you have applied this update. Can you please confirm if you purchased a Diamond DVD from us , where you purchased your CoPilot software from.
I bought CoPilot on CD from O2 when I got my last phone (O2 XDA Orbit 2)
I have not purchased a Diamond DVD - how much will that cost or is it cheaper to buy a new product?

Hi
My Copilot 7 live routing refuses to route if there is a motorway or motorway junction involved! For example, sitting at J17 of the M4 and asking CoPilot to route to my home (1 mile from J16) it chose to add a full 25 miles to the route going north and avoiding any motorway junctions. When leaving the motorway it sent me north rather than south and suggested a route which added a further 5 miles at that point.
The device has given nothing but outlandish routes since I applied the update that the Copilot desktop software suggested!
Any ideas, I am furious with the thing right now - where can I download the previous version that works properly from!??

David

...the routing is as random as you could get without without asking your mad aunt with Alzheimer to give you directions. I'm waiting just for it to try to get me to use rail tracks.
As for Traffic Management - nope I wont work on the Touch Diamond
Would I recommend any body to use CoPilot 7 Live? NO not yet
Please tel me that ALK are working a version for the Touch Diamond

Hi S0ylentK
The DVD is a couple of GB which is why I guess you cannot download? (PM me?) It installs 7.7.1.280 navteq.eu.07q3.v7.1.11.4.3.a
I will be testing things out today and PM you with results. See other posts for my new ROM and drivers from I have now updated to a ROM (Bepe 0.99dx) - if this resolves things I will be first to post my results to ALK and post them here.
I've just enabled the GPRS Traffic and will post results on that.
More importantly
I will be running by 02 XDA Orbit 2 in a cradle next to my Touch Diamond
I want to see if they both send me different ways (I suspect they will!)
It is amazing just how irritating a busted GPS sat nav can be - I sympathise. ALK UK are working with me to get tracks and routes to test and want to fix the problem we are both experiencing.
Yours
Leon
Sounds like the people with problems havent set their routing preference up properly... ie they have shortest route instead of fastest and hence it is suggesting B roads (as they are more direct even if slower).
