I am about to buy a Orange locked HTC TyTN II of ebay I will unlock it and use it on on O2
I hope.
Apart from this driver issue I have been reading about
do you think they are a good pda phone for the money
I use to have a xda mini s uintil I dropped some wieghts on it at the gym and loved that phone as texting was so easy (been using k800i since then and hate texting)
apart as a backup I wont need tomtom on the phone but would not mind listing to music and watching films playing the odd game.
would you say go for this phone or no go for another model
Thanks for any advice
It's a good phone.
Still one of the most popular on here.
I'm very happy with mine and wouldn't change it. (except maybe for a Raphael, if someone would give me one)

You seem like you want an entertainment device more than a pocket pc. There are many other phones out there that are more suited to music, videos and games.
Don't get me wrong, I love my kaiser for my lifestyle. But my wife also loves her iPhone for her music, videos and games

Thats probably the closest you'll get to an impartial answer asking a question on a forum dedicated to the device
I've had mine since they were first released. Whilst I love my phone I'm happy to acknowledge theres issues with them, however any true geek will work around those issues, (and moan about them to other geeks)
My reason for using a windows mobile device is because of the applications. very few phones have anywhere close to the level of applications that WM devices have.
Things you probably want to consider are "Do I want a keyboard?" "Do I need GPS?" "how big are my pockets?"
My partner loved my TYTN2, but always told me she'd never get one, as it was like carrying a brick. The day she saw a Touch Dual she needed to have one.
its smaller, runs as fast, just doesnt have the bonus extras of Wifi and GPS.
The keyboard is more of a standard phone keypad, but it still had the on screen keypad for texting.
its all down to which features you want.
Ok thanks for all the replies I have been and collected it and it looks good and I think I will be happy when I have got rid of the orange rom of it,(thinks thats what you call it)
the shapes not much differant to the xda mini s I use to have
one thing concerns me though he been using a external bluetooth for gps and he said he cant configure the internal gps to work with tomtom could the gps be not be working in the phone or could it be settings

I have TomTom 6 working on my phone off the internal GPS no problems.
If you pay for GPS software that is compatable (check with the vendor) with your device then it must work, or you can just get your money back
Some ROMs are incompatable with some GPS software's but you just avoid those

There are enough of these in the wild here in the US of A, is it possible for you to take a look at someone elses over where you are?
I find that the system gets really slow at times and that is my main complaint. I hate being able to out type this thing.

Thanks for your replie
This has tomtom 6 on it what the settings I need to check to see if i can get it to work by the built in gps or is there a way on the phone to test it.
It came on the phone so why wouldn't it work with the phone?
Not sure but why use an external bluetooth Gps unit with it
I guess to save the phones power. All gps programs that I know of can use the internal gps.

I am in the States - I travel all over the USA and use my TOMTOM Navigator 6 all the time - it DOES require that I have it plugged in as the battery life is only about an hour or two with the GPS turned on.
BUT - while the VERY first lock on GPS takes a while there are tricks that make it lock faster and the ROM is a big part of this. The ROM in my signature locks in about 30 seconds.

I stopped using tomtom because the screen stayed on all the time, and that will burn down some power too. I use google maps, and I just don't see how people use windows live, I don't even see anything about maps.
XDA Mini S to Kaiser
This was the very same route that I went down so I can probably share some experiences.
My XDA Mini was from O2 but when my contract came up last October, they only had the 'Orbit' so I went over to Orange. I still don't think O2 have the Kaiser in it's true HTC Tytn II form, so you are going down the prefered route if you want to stay with O2.
The XDA Mini was great but very slow on download because it didn't have the advantage of 3G / HSDPA.
The XDA Mini keyboard is very similar in layout to the Kaiser but the Kaiser 'feels' better engineered, the slide is smoother and not as loose, and the tilt screen is useful when using it on a table for typing.
The XDA Mini uses Mini-SD as opposed to Micro-SD, so I had a few memory cards left over (I'm using them on a digital camera, so not wasted).
I used Tomtom on the XDA-Mini with bluetooth but if you didn't get a lock, you were not sure if it was a BT issue or a GPS issue, also I had to reset both a couple of times as the 'pointer' was running parallel to the roads about 200 yrds away and kept trying to re-route. Also, TT needed tweaking for the correct COMs port.
The Kaiser has never been a problem and the GPS lock is quicker, with TT and iGO .. and I've not had to go looking in the footwell of the car when the GPS unit slid off the dash whilst doing an unexpected tight turn !
Also, if I wanted to use the navigational system while walking I had to juggle the GPS receiver as well as holding the phone, which is a big plus.
Apart from unlocking the XDA Mini via this forum, I didn't bother messing with the ROM's, but the Kaiser seems to have so many more opportunies to expand and getting rid of the Orange 'bloat ware' was a benefit.
In summary, the XDA Mini was a fabulous, plastic feeling, lightweight PDA and Phone. The Kaiser is a well engineered, phone with a miniature laptop built in.
If you enjoyed the XDA Mini, the Kaiser will blow your socks off ... when you've got rid of the Orange stuff and added a few cabs
I have two problems at the moment with the XDA Ignito. It is a great handset otherwise.
The first problem is not one that concerns me too much. It is when I add recipient to a SMS and click to send, it shows an error message saying the format of the number to send to isn't correct or something similar but asks if I want to send anyway. I know that sending texts works fine though apart from that error which is just a little annoying if it is going to pop up every time I want to send a message.
The second problem is one that annoys me quite a bit more. It is to do with the GPS. I believe at the moment, it is getting the location from mobile phone masts and not the GPS satellites.
In GoogleMaps, it is saying My Location is within 1800m of a greyish/blue pale circle and there is a brighter circle in the centre of the big circle.
I've seen a video on YouTube of one using the HTC Touch Diamond and they have managed to track the satellites fairly quickly and my friend who also has the same handset as me says his GPS works fine. Takes a few minutes to connect to several satellites he said.
If anyone wants to know my GPS settings, I have program port on COM4, the hardware port is None and baud rate (or whatever it is is set at 4800) and mangement of GPS by software is set to be managed automatically.
I can admit that I have not tried this outdoors yet but have sat at a window with this so it should be working.
I think I've read somewhere about incoming beams being set on receive all incoming beams can affect this working? Is this correct? Oh, and all the other settings are defaults. Using the standard O2 ROM that came on the device. Think its dated the 8th Aug if that is any help.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
I must also add, there does not appear to be any QuickGPS listed under programs. Where could it be?
Can anyone confirm whether this is normal? I understand those with a HTC Official ROM will have it but not sure why with my O2 ROM it is not listed. Could it still be installed yet not listed under programs for some unknown reason?
i can't help you with the sms problem, however with the gps - you will likely not get enough reception on your gps receiver indoors, since the satellites must be in sight, at least three of them to be able to determine your position by triangulation. so go outdoors and try it again, then it should work.
For some reason, o2 appear to have decided to remove QuickGPS. Whilst using the o2 rom I never got a gps fix even leaving the device for around an hour sat on the window sill.
I got fed up, flashed a new HardSPL and Dutty's ROM onto the device and then updated the QuickGPS data. This worked perfectly and within a minute or two I had full gps lock and tomtom was able to pin point my position accurately.
On a seperate note, line of sight isn't particularly important I found as I can sit in my living room around 4 metres from any window and it picks up satellites from cold as quick as standing outside. This is the same with my old phone as well (artemis) which managed to pick up a fix very promptly even tho it uses a different gps chip.
O2 haven't included QuickGPS as this functionality is supposedly included on the chipset and downloads the data from the carrier signal.
I found that with Assisted GPS enabled, my phone was tracking location using mobile phone masts, as soon as i turned it off the GPS performance was fine. (You can use Advanced Config to do this)

Advanced Config?
I think Advanced Config is a program that you install on your device. Gives you all sorts of options to make modifications to settings and tweak the device to improve on performance. I'm not sure I want to try this at the moment. Would rather have the device working as I think it should be using the current O2 ROM that came on the device.
I'm going to check out the GPS again when I go out later on and see if it works.
I still have a problem with the Text messaging where an error pops up before sending the message. Says something like format is not right for the phone number even though I have added the person from the contacts list. For some reason it just doesn't like the format the number is in.
Everything else with the device is fine though.
Oh one more thing, just out of interest, is it possible to obtain QuickGPS (CAB file) without having to change ROM? I once got the HTC Streaming Media application for my XDA Orbit from somewhere on this site.
Thanks.
I'd also be interested in Quick GPS as the GPS lock on my Ignito is terrible compared to my Orbit 2....
I've had a dig around and all I can find are failry incomprehensible registry hacks etc etc.
I've desabled AGPS via Diamond Tweak and I'll see if it's any quicker to get a lock now....
I'm a bit confused to bbe honest!
I've been outside with the GPS. It is amazing just how accurate it is now.
One thing I've noticed though is when I had a play around with the device this evening. It was asking me to enter my system and sim pins one after the other as though I had switched the device off. The device must have some how reset itself while in my pocket or maybe due to a period of inactivity.
I have pretty much the same power settings as what I had on my XDA Orbit.
I have the screen and phone power to standby or whatever it is called after 1min when running on battery and 10mins when connected to mains, could that trigger this in the XDA Ignito?
Thanks.
Still got to look into the SMS issue. Might be O2 settings related but got a feeling it is software.
glad you got your GPS working mate!
Still got the problem with the SMS error dialog box popping up before allowing me to send the message. Anyone have any ideas on how I'd get rid of that?
Thanks.
Please help me out with this, I'm getting very annoyed, upset and whatever else you can think of. Two days ago, I brought my Tilt into the ATT service center because of a problem, and they replaced it with a brand new Tilt. My older one was running 6.0 but this new one is running 6.1 WinMo, which I fear is the culprit here.
I get full HSPA bars here in NYC (kaiser tweak) under most circumstances, and it stays this way while I'm surfing the net and such but, whenever I make a phone call, it automatically switches to G ! ? There are times when it might go through with EDGE *the call*, but it's seldom. I never had this problem before the phone switch. It also happens without using Kaiser Tweak, with 3G. And while I AM able to use the phone with G, I feel that this might pose a problem at some point, and would like the phone to be able to reach its full potential or.. just be the way it was.
Help is seriously needed !

i think theyre still using EDGE / 2G for voice calls.. not all markets have switched to 3G/HSDPA voice
I too have the same issue. I'm not saying a problem, cause in my opinion it is not. When a call is made it switches back to gprs. It takes about 30 secs after the call to switch it back to hsdpa. It is probably a bug or perhaps a lack of your carrier.
BTW. I'm with T-mobile Holland, perhaps it is network related.
What I'm trying to convey though is that my other phone (which was exchanged because I thought the top of the slider was loose) did not behave like this. It kept its full H bars through every call. And the only difference between the two phones is that the previous one ran WinMo 6.0 and this one runs 6.1
They DO use HSPA here in NYC, you have to turn it on with Kaiser tweak in order to use it, though.

u nailed it 2 times on the head here..
kaiser tweak..and ur stock winmo 6.1
- kaiser tweak is an essential tool for a kaiser..never leave it behind after a flash and always enable ur HSDPA
- winmo 6.1 is a dirty dirty devil, what i suggest is to reflash and use a good radio..i live in Central New Jersey and im in and out of NY daily ( midtown / diamond district ) and i have yet to experience a dropped call!
im running the below mentioned rom and radio..give it a go..most likely u wont be disappointed!

Well, it's interesting. Paulbates over at hofo suggests (and I agree w/him) that it would have been silly for them to release a ROM which did this, and we'd see tons of threads here and elsewhere about it if it were the case. I only asserted though, that the radio version might not like the area in which I live yada yada..
As soon as the problem started however, I did install Kaiser Tweak, and enabled HSDA. It worked as usual, but the H disappears just as fast as 3G was disappearing, so it makes no difference. I'm also experiencing data connectivity issues on this phone for the first time ever. Last night, even with full E or H bars, as I tried to open Opera or PIE, I'd get an error saying I had no data session open and the web page wasn't available. I tried many different pages of course, so it was the phone.. This never happened with my other phone, and I'm really regretting having taken it back now.
P.S. as far as changing the ROM and radio, I'm very inexperienced (re: have never done it before) and will wait to see if changing the phone makes a difference first. I only wish they had given me an exchange phone with 6.0 on it. Even the guy at the shop said that a lot of people have been complaining about 6.1. Do you live in NYC btw ? If so, perhaps I will take your advice about changing the ROM/Radio myself. Only thing is though, I run Linux. I do also have a Macbook Pro.. Can I do it with either of those OS's ?
Doug
Oh this is so very annoying... I just brought the phone into the store and they replaced it again. The girl I dealt with was very nice, and went through testing it out, and agreed that it was indeed doing something it shouldn't be doing. She even swapped the SIM card, but it was still the same. I then got a new (refurb of course) and it seemed to stay on E in the store, but then I wandered outside into Bryant Park (where I am now) and the same ol' junk occurred.
The last call I made actually stayed on Edge, but that was about 1 of 7 calls. Not only that, but now my voice mail doesn't work either... It asks if I have an account, then prompts me to put in my phone number. When I do, it says it's not a valid account. I'm really regretting switching my phone over, big time.
I'm going to call CS and see what they have to say (yes, we know the network isn't solid right now, but we're "working on it") Yah...
This really puts me off, but if they can't do anything, I'll start messing with the ROMS. It's just that my download speed right now sucks, too. Can someone direct me to a mobile internet speed test, which is good ? I tried toast.net, but it's too slow to load anything on any of the servers. And speedtest.net requires flash, but those probably aren't very good for mobile phones, anyway.
Doug
Hi all, i got a Kaiser, ATT model, 2 month ago i has been using the device as pocket pc only and was working perfect, now i use as phone with the carrier "CLARO" from Chile... well this its drive me to crazy... when the phone function its on, the device its very sticky, i use it fro 3 or 5 min and then freeze for 30 seconds, some times i just wake up it from sleep and freeze, some times start freezing 15 second every 2 seconds... when i say freeze i mean its dosnt respond from any imput (Screen, Hardkeys, Keyboard, Power)... i was testing kaiser radios like 1.65.xx, 1.70.xx, 1.71.xx and niki, etc. without luck... i hide sim contacts too, i set manual search for networks, i try with automatic too and disable the other country networks that i found on the sim, i switch between GSM and 3g, i even change my custom ROM...
Well i think i am not hte only one in the world with this problem, long time ago i see a guy with a ipaq 6940, WM 5.0, i see the device working and freeze a lot too with the same way, even in XDA i read post responses talking about this, i think the problem its related to the reception, some times when i am on home work very nice, but when i go to the center of my city and enter to mall, the device start freeze a lot, on my girlfriend house too (its a solid structure, my its make in wood lol)...
so, i am very tired of this, its getty a pain to use the device, any one has some similar problem? i think the windows reg can be tweaked for disable some parameters of phone and cause problem, maybe a way to tell the phone "when the signal its low, just lost it", in other post (i dont remeber the link, so please if anyone know it plz post it here) i read that there a reg key to set the priority or some like that the carrier give to the phone (in numbers)... well any info its welcome!!!!!
Regards and thanks!
no body has same or similar issue????
Hi all,
completely new to the ofrum although i've visited a few threads in the past.
I'm now in need of help so am appealing to the knowledgeable demi-gods on here for help.
I've had a TD since July 2008 (launch day in UK) on vodafone UK.
After having some issues with it being slow/sluggish etc, I did a rom update to 1.93.161.2 WWE (Aug 08).
Now, the vodafone sat nav hasn't worked properly since about May this year (don't use it very often), its always stuck at "acquiring satellites". So after speaking to VF they advise me to flash the newer rom 1.96 (iirc).
But, i've spoken to a few people who recommend going an alternative route, i.e. back to HTC 2.03 rom?
Basically what i want from my TD apart from the usual phone/sms funtions is:
pop3 mail setup (like i have now)
exchange sync'ing (like i have now)
sat nav (like i have now)
Before wiping i need to take my contacts off the phone, copying to the sim isn't an option as there are too many and it trunkates the names.
I've been advised about THIS for taking contacts off (activesync doesn't seem to want to do it).
I've also been told that using HTC rom will render my vodafone satnav (which is free with my tarrif) useless, but that igo8 and tomtom are better. But are they free?
I'd really appreciate a gentle approach to doing this please. I've done a search but there's so many topics on roms etc that i felt it needed a new thread.
I'm actually an I.T. manage by day, so i'm not new to technology.....just flashing mobiles i guess.
Thanks for any help offered. You WILL have a place reserved in paradise.
Before you do anything i suggest you try the htc gps tool, you can use it to erase old gps data maybe you will get a fix then, also try quick gps if you dont have it, it uses gprs/3g to download that latest sat data so its easyer to get a sat lock quicker
Thanks for the reply mancsoulja. My TD does have quickgps installed, but it makes no difference to helping get the satnav working sadly.
I will however try the other app to clear the data and give it another go, thanks.
Will let you know about that.
Actually, what i forgot to mention in my op is that if i get a sms during the day; i click on it, read it, then try and hit 'men > reply' it can take well over a minute to actually respond. The same happens when i want to make a call. I use the TouchFlow to browse to my favourite contacts, but trying to scroll down the list of only 10 contacts it simply does nothing. Then about a minute or so later it catches up with itself and goes all over the place trying to catch up with every key press since.
This was the original reason i had for upgrading the rom.
Its as if waking it up after doing nothing for ages makes it all sluggish (bit like a pc when waking from hibernate i guess) Its very laggy.
Ok, the htc gps tool? Lol i have nooooo idea what i'm supposed to do with that.
Google maps works fine, in that it knows my location and i can plan a route using it, so GPS is working. Its just that vf satnav won't work.
Any ideas on this please?
