Hello All,
I'm having the oppertunity to try before buy a HTC MTeoR. I'm using a Flatfee FairUse T-Mobile UMTS subscription. Last night I've installed Several Smartphone apps and was amazed by the speed en buttons! Good Job.
The MTeoR was empty when i went for bed and i placed it on the charger for the whole night, This morning it is full. Now, 5 hours later, the battery is 15 %...
UMTS sign is on all the time and it keeps synced (HTTP Push Based) with an Exchange 2003 SP2 server. I've also installed a Hotmail account, I'm unsure if the Hotmail account is synced as well on Push or Pull basis.
Is it normal that the Battery drains just by lying around on my desk, I haven't placed any calls, it's only lying.
Regards Tom from Netherlands
Hallo,
Succes.
Hoi JHWO
I Will answer in English thanx for your info, I;m curious if you still know the website or forum which desribes the UMTS drain. I think it's rediculious that UMTS drains... I have T-Mobile and they allow UMTS speeds (it's limited to 64/kb - 64/kb) of available in the area, it will switch back to GPRS when UMTS is not available.
So I should perform a test with the MTeoR with GPRS only and check if the battery still drains.
I;m unsure what you mean with : " Verder zet ik hem altijd in de "blokkeer toetsen", daar het scherm dat donker is. " The screen and particulary the Keyboard light go off real soon allready.
"Die je bovenstaand niet zal de batterij het geen dag uithouden !!" I try to interper this as, UMTS and Exchange Push, will not give good battery results.
As reminder, If you have the website or forum which describes the UMTS 'search' problem which cause Battery drain I will like to see it
Regards Tom
I can only concurr. I normally use my MTeoR in Sweden and using UMTS I get almost 1 day of battery life if I don't talk or sync. I I do that I need to load the phone at work. Now when I have been down at Fuerteventura and only been able to run GSM/GPRS I get atleast 2 days battery time. A huge difference.
One strange thing with this is that if I compare to a Samsung 3G phone I have it always gives me longer batterytimes and also better reception on the same network.
UMTS is 2100 MHz, GSM 900 or 850 or 1900 but in all cases lower frequency
Lower frequency = higher power drain, so UMTS should cause your battery to work longer standbys and talks
DATA on the other hand is rather demanding on 3G networks, so you can expect it to drain the battery in a metter of hours if constantly used

I would have said the opposite. The higher the frequency, the more the radio waves behave like light - goes in straight lines and can be blocked by objects. The phone needs to compensate by increasing the power.
My own experience is that even with the phone on standby only, the battery times is significantly longer on GMS.

I said the correct thing, and this opposite does not hold the water, but should have been clearer:
the higher the freq, the tighter the operator's BTS grid should be, therefore, less stretching for the phone... Im not making it up, it a common knowledge..

I use my K-Jam in the US normally (T-Mobile is my provider).
I'm in Europe and I'm not getting any signal at all (even when I try and manually select a network I get nothing listed)
Has anyone seen this problem before?
Anyone have any ideas of what to do?
Is there something special to do to put it in quad-band mode?
Thanks.

maybe you don't have roaming service enabled with your operator?
That's not possible since even if he doesn't int'l roaming activated, his K-JAM should still display a list of networks. dfoody, have you tried another SIM card? I'm not too familiar with the K-JAM's setup concerning the possibility of manually selecting bands. Very few PPCs have this ability, the only one I know of that had this option was the Siemens SX56.
You might try another SIM card first to see if that is the problem. You might also need to consider a soft reset to ensure your K-JAM isn't somehow stuck. This works wonders sometimes and then the PPC works like a charm.
The problem is on the US provider. If your sim is not enabled to roaming it will not work and will not display local providers.
I tested this when i traveled to brazil using a mexican sim (giving me your problem), changed with my italian sim (enabled to roaming) and the local providers appeared when searched.
Wizard switch automatically the radio frequencies.
True enough, when I went to Germany, I had to call T-Mo first and activate international roaming. But only the first time, it always grabs a signal before I land now.
TRIBAND: Mein Deutsch ist schlecht, aber wie es in Koeln geht? Ich könnte über für das kommen INTERMOT, International Trade Fair for Motorcycles and Scooters, October 6 to 14, 2006.
Problem resolved
Thanks everyone. I tried a friend's T-Mobile US SIM and everything worked fine.
I talked with T-Mo customer care, and my account was already setup for international roaming (and I had been using it in Canada a lot), but apparently there was some discrepancy (which the rep didn't detail).
Once he corrected that, the k-Jam picked up the signal almost immediately.
Good to hear, enjoy your German roaming experience
At least it works the other way round. When landing in the states, my phone grabs a signal in seconds
Dear All !
I have successfully upgraded my Trinity to the Dopod 810 Rom. Works fine and has GPS Chip support....but I got a sad surprise: this Rom does only support WDCMA 3G and not UMTS !!! Since I am in Europe, I need either to get back to a UMTS enabled ROM (but I will loose GPS Chip support) or get around the problem with your help in another way. Do you think it is possible to enable the (now) Dopod Trinity to support UMTS ?
Thank you for reply. Please feel free to mail my mailbox [email protected]

They are the same thing.
PS: It's WCDMA not WDCMA
WCDMA (UMTS)
With WCDMA (UMTS) it acts around a portable radio standard of the third generation (3G), which of operators instead of used the so far, GSM based 2G-Netzwerke to be used can. WCDMA (UMTS) supports higher data transmission rates, which offer customers and enterprises world-wide an improved mobile Konnektivität.
UMTS (universal mobile Telecommunications service) is implemented in Europe, in order to replace GSM/GPRS.
WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) is implemented by operators in the USA and Japan, in order to replace TDMA/GSM/GPRS/PDC.
The terms WCDMA and UMTS can be used synonymously.
I had some trouble with 3G with Dopod ROM
Perhaps you need to select the band in phone settings, I am in England on Vodafone and use:
Goto phone, Menu, Options, Band and then choose Auto for Network Type and for Band Choose GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
This gave me back 3G (UMTS) and also works with HSDPA even shows H icon when downloading, very nice speeds indeed sometimes in excess of 1MB.
Hope that helps.

Dear Tukan, let's go to the point: does my HTC P3600 Dopod D810 that is WCDMA enabled log into a European's Phone Company UMTS network or, as it seems to me now, can it just log into the GSM/GPRS band ?
Thank you/Danke schoen

Thank you. But, could you please specify the following:
1) are you using a HTC P3600 (Trinity) ?
2) did you flash it with the Dopod ROM that was once available on XDA Developers, now from Rapidshare ?
Thank you
Arnobreker
Of course I am !!!
Look at my signature and the bottom of my previous post post and read my post carefully follow the instructions and you should be okay.

I turned on my Tilt this morning and where the 3G icon used to be it is now a H icon all the time even if I am not connected to the network or downloading data. I have tried disabling HSDPA and reenabling it, but that hasn't worked. Disabling and reenabling the icon itself also doesn't get rid of the problem. I haven't installed anything. Does anyone know how to fix this or is this some kind of newly discovered radio bug?
Running on AT&T network.
Thanks
dont complain.. ur not stuck in H u now have full blown H in the area.. my girls 85 has full H now and so does my tilt
does this mean I have HSUPA too?
What exactly do you mean by full H? My download speeds didn't change at all
I am currently faced with this same stuck H issue.
I am running the stock AT&T ROM ver ... 1.62.502.0, Radio version 1.37.14.09
Sometimes when I travel to a particular work office I use dutty's 10 button Comm Manager to turn 3G off. This particular office is built like a fortress and I barely get signal inside. If I leave 3G on my battery is dead in a matter of hours.
So I turned 3G off for the first time since upgrading to this ROM, and later when I turned it back on I find I have a constant H indicator rather than the 3G I normally see.
Yes I am in an HSDPA area, but normally I would only see the H when downloading.
Yes, I use direct push with a hosted exchange server.
I've tried disabling HSDPA in KaiserTweak, and I get back to the 3G indicator ... But as you would expect my download speeds are limited to 300 to 400 kbit/sec.
With HSDPA enabled I average twice that, with bursts over 1mbit/sec.
Can anyone speculate why I have the constant H indicator now instead of only when downloading?
Everything still works, I just wouldn't mind knowing why I am seeing this change in indicator.
I have since found out that the the contant H icon is a result of AT&T upgrading their network. Since then, my download speeds have roughly doubled. Turns out the contant H is a good thing.
I went away on a business trip for a week and now upon returning I too am seeing the constant H, whereas previously I'd see 3G which would change to H and back when using data.
But that's not the part that is worrying me.
The problem I see is that the data connection is active all the time; it never drops. So besides the large H indicating HSDPA availability, once any data connection is made the 4 bars plus plus small triangle changes to 4 bars plus small H and *never* changes back. In the past I'm pretty sure the data connection would come and go as needed.
Is this bad at all? Seems like it would suck battery power to have the data connection active all the time. It's as if the KaiserTweak "always on: AT&T MediaNet" is stuck on (but I never actually did that tweak and it is actually disabled in KaiserTweak).
What's going on?
Have you done an upload speed test?
Apparently a constant H icon can indicate HSUPA support.
Little more info ... however finding a map of what was upgraded isn't that easy.

AT&T Nears HSPA
By Brad Smith
WirelessWeek - April 02, 2008
LAS VEGAS—AT&T will have all of its 3G markets enabled with the high speed uplink capabilities by the middle of the year, according to Hank Kafka, vice president of network architecture for the operator.
AT&T had 255 major metropolitan markets with W-CDMA/HSDPA at the end of 2007 and continues to add markets. Kafka said at a GSM Association roundtable on HSPA that AT&T expects to cover 350 markets with 3G by the end of 2008, including all of the top 100 markets.
The operator started installing HSUPA last year and now is in the process of rolling it out, he said. By mid-year, he said all of its 3G markets will have HSUPA. He says typical data rates on the downlink now are between 600-to-1400 Kbps with a peak of 3.6 Mbps, while the downlink typically is 500-to-800 Kbps.
There are upgrades for HSPA which take it as high as 14.4 Mbps and Kafka says AT&T is studying those. But he declined to say when or if AT&T will raise its data rates to those levels.
Kafka also said AT&T has seen significant data usage increases for customers using 3G.

Yea, I have the constant 'H' as well, but I think it's the same as having a constant 'E', meaning that you're connected to HSPA and everything's good.
switching bands
switched bands sometimes helps changing the icons from edge to 3g,to disable HSDPA you need to disable HSDPA through kaisertweak, schaps advancedconfig or hsdpa switch whether cooked into rom or manually installed to switch back to 3g
I have an issue with the roaming icon on the top of my screen.
I have a simcard for the Dutch "Telfort" GSM network. But this provider makes use of the Dutch "KPN" GSM network.
This means that I am always on a "foreign" network and bedause of that I am always "roaming". This means I always have the roaming icon displayed at the top of my today screen.
Since I am always roaming, the icon has no use anymore and just eats up space and I have hated it ever since the day Telfort was bought by KPN.
I was wondering if there is a registry entry that can permanently hide the Roaming triangle so it won't bother me anymore???
Please let me know if you have a possible sollution.

This only disables the pop-up message, warning you about roaming. I want to completely earase the roaming icon on the top of the today screen (the little triangle)... This is not an option in advanced config... at least I can't find it
Volgens mij staat dat icoontje er alleen als je op een 3G netwerk zit als er gebruik word gemaakt van GPRS dan staat hij er bij mij in ieder geval niet.

I have the same rom as you have, but that doesn't really matter I think.
The roaming icon is there because I am forced to use the KPN network while having Telfort as a provider. This means I am roaming always. This means I have no use for the roaming Icon which is always on screen as soon as my telephone connects to the network and I am looking for a registry edit or a cab file to hide the icon...
Anyone knows anything???
I have the same problem with the Fido network in Canada. Ever since the Rogers network bought Fido, my phone always shows the roaming icon. Is there a way to trick the phone into thinking that it is not roaming?

I have the same issue. Don't know about a registry setting. But what if you try a customized taskbar without the roaming icon? If this is possible and if it would help you, I suggest you learn how to customize a taskbar yourself or ask someone if they can make one for you.
Hi guys!
I am experiencing something strange with my Diamond.
I verified that the issue appears with different ROM and with different Radios (I've tried .05 and .08 so far).
When I am in Austria:
The reception is excellent, also in comparison to other mobile phones.
The icon close to the taskmanager says:
"3G" when I am idle, or when I call,
"H" when I use HSDPA (when I browse internet),
"E" when I don't have good coverage and switch to EDGE from other operators.
When I am in Italy:
Reception is clearly worse in comparison to other mobile phones.
The icon close to the taskmanager remains always "H" regardless if I am not using the phone, or if I am calling or browsing the internet.
It seems I am always attached to HSDPA.
(anyway I've verified that the data connection is not open.)
Is any of you experiencing the same issue?
Ciao,
Dan
Never been in Austria with my current cell, but I can tell you about Italy, where i presently live in. Besides, I am also a h3g customer.
Well, it is quite well known that diamond doesnt excel in reception overall. However all works as it should. I mean i see the H only when I am downloading/uploading data. If not I get normally 3G or E in roaming TIM.
You make me curious... you pushing me to come to austria to check it out

Sure, I know...
In the same place where I have 2 notches with the Diamond, I have 5 notches with a 2yrs old Samsung (with Tre Italia H3G).
I know that the notches are not so reliable, but so much difference is strange.
This does NOT happen in Austria, where the different cells behave almost equally (with Drei Österreich H3G).
And that H, which remains constantly there, never changing to 3G, E, or something else, makes me thinking....
I've currently Dutty 3.6b, with radio 1.09.25.23 (I've also tried 1.08.25.08 and 1.00.25.05).
ciao,
Dan
