To our gurus (DES, Olipro, lvsw, mun_rus, ...): Help me get started on ROM cooking - P3600 Software Upgrading

Hello,
I may be new to this scene but I am very interested in being a helpful member of this community. Specifically, I would like to make a german GPS-enabled ROM from a romdump.
I found a lot of very usefull information on this board and the wiki. However I'm a little afraid to brick my little P3600 in the process.
So here are my questions to the XDA-Developer gurus:
1) Any suggestions on what NOT to do, i.e. which actions can potentially brick a device
2) Can I take any safety precautions that make the ROM cooking life easier or safer?
3) Could one of you help me by chat (IRC, ICQ, MSN, Skype) in case I have some specific issues?
4) Any other comments, interesting howtos or must-reads?
Thanks in advance, I hope I'll be able to pull this off.
PS: Also if someone with a german GPS-enabled ROM reads this, please contact me! I need a romdump first

1) Use aChefs utils 2.0 only.
2) Don't forget to check your ouput OS.nb file with OCchecker by Olipro
3) You should have SPL 1.01 MFG, coz if your device doesn't boot you wont be able to use sspl for downgrade.
4) Read more about bootloader commands
5) Don't use special tytn's tools for rom coocking, coz there is some difference. You have big risk to brick your device if you flash it.
6) You need some resource editor tool and you should know how to sign the ouput files
7) You do all at your own risk

Thanks mun_rus that is very helpful.
Concerning 5): I intend to follow these tutorials:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_HowtoDumpRom
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_HowtoReconstruct
As far as I can tell all those tools are not TYTN-specific, right?
By the way, I think its great that you give "newbie"-cooks a chance. Maybe I'll soon be able to return something to this great community!

Use aChef tools for creating dump and reconstructing a rom) it's more easier

If by "aChef Tools" you mean this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294364&highlight=achef
I don't see any mention of a dumping tool. Maybe i used the term cooking wrong: I want to produce a flashable ROM from a ROM dump that somebody else will do.
In my mind the steps should be:
1) Dump german GPS ROM
2) Extract all files from part02.raw
3) Reconstruct os using any proper tool (you recommend aChef)
4) Check os.nb with OCchecker
5) Flash os.nb to my Trinity (install Hard-SPL first)
6) Flash radio ROM with GPS support to my Trinity (actually its already on there
7) Enjoy german GPS rom
8) Make it easy for others to flash, maybe package of OS and radio ROM.
Any corrections?

SSPL (or flashing any ROM 4 free)

This tool allow to flash your Trinity ROM bypassing CID and signature(*) check.
For flashing ROM copy SSPL-TRIN.exe to your device and run it. Standart bootloader prompt should appear on screen, check SPL version number: if it ends with ".ds" then everything is fine. (Re)attach usb cable and run firmware update utility.
In case if something goes wrong during flashing you should flash your device with ROM accepted by standard bootloader (and have another try if you wish).
(*) code must be formally signed i.e. contain properly-formated signatures on their places, however no checking are performed against them. Actualy unsigned code flashing was tested by flashing original signed nbh image with few bytes in header and extrom section modified, but patches were designed to accept any properly formatted crap as a valid signature.

Is that true ?
The Trinity update bypass works perfectly.
As for hermes i cannot test that one.
A minor thing i noticed that it doesn't return the current rom version to the romupdateutility just says "".
Great work

if you are asking 'bout trinity then yes. If 'bout hermes then I wanna know in too but I'm 90% shure that there would be no surprise. Anyway (please don't treat this as official acceptance of responsibility ) chance of bricking device is immeasurably low: in the wrost case SPL simply hangs unstarted (you could't do anything wrong in this case).

Afaik version number is retrieved by RUUGetInfo.exe started from CE. And you won't get this when you are starting your flashing on device already in SPL service mode (even with normal SPL).

As far as I understand, this will allow for flashing of any "cooked" firmware to above mentioned devices and some others..
Well, I have got few devices here ( as per my signature). Please let me know if more testing is required.

Yes it should. Have neither time nor expirence on cooking modern devices firmware (dump/restoreimgfs version that I have don't work on Trinity rom and I have no will to make it working unless forced to) so flashing realy "cooked" rom was not tested. But as mentioned above I was able to successfully flash original rom with some bytes modified and from signatures point of view this makes no difference with cooked ROM.
Noted. Thanks for your efforts.
Not at all. And I hope that ability to flash unsigned code to any device would create demand for rom cooking toolchain and it would be (if it havn't already) develoed to support newer roms.
Great...... work Des

HTC Breeze smartphone should be a good candidate, as it should be very similar to hermes & trinity.
Also you can try on Artemis, but artemis uses DOC and is quite a different platform.

Sorry, not meant as a slam, but someone with only 21 posts, puts up a Rapidshare link for something to flash to a Wizard saying its HardSPL and no other instructions or information... Sorry (again, no offense meant by this) but I wouldn't flash something that is unexplained (if there is another post about this, then at least give a pointer to that in the first post).
FWIW: HardSPL is a way of making your device almost unbrickable. If it works like with the Hermes and Kaiser HardSPL, then you do the steps needed to install this, instead of the old CID unlock procedure of having to go back to the Button ROM and running lokiwiz.
But still, I'd be careful flashing something like this until more is known about it (the source, instructions for the method to install it, etc).
Totally agreed! I wouldn't go for it!
I don't mind to brick my wizard again!

I with you agree, but...
I shall be immodest - please read ALL my messages ;-)
Instructions are not present because I do not wish to be responsible for another's nonsense. To whom it is necessary that will understand.

Lokiwiz has been a trusted and faithful friend. Until I get more info, instructions, screeners even...I will keep using my trusted friend Loki.
No offense to the OP, but "read my other posts" doesn't tell us much. Your other posts are just like this one. Short and to the point, no real info given...nothing telling me how to install/run it. Nothing troubleshooting if an issue should arise. Read the Loki thread, or Dr. P's tutorial...everything anyone needs to know about Loki is there. Yours...not so much.
Hey, all I need is a "no-answer" answer from the poster and that's enough for me to hold back.

Guys dont bombard like this , Prislav has always presented raw content like this in Prophet forum also. Maintaining the terminology, just see diagram, might be useful- simple
But im not favouring any one. please!
I force nobody. Do not want, it is not necessary. To me it is not important.
Well this thread seems nice and hostile .
Unless I am missing something all Prislav has done is to use JumpSPL by Pof (Nice WinCE Tramp by the way ) to fire off a patched G3 SoftSPL and from there let you launch into the ROM update routine.
Prislav’s post may have been a little short on details but there is plenty of info on the board and in his previous threads on the subject. Pof's JumpSPL thread is also a goldmine of info.
Prislav also seems to have been kind enough to provide a patched 'flashable' SPL for G3 devices.
I have not tried this yet (my G3 junkers are at home, so I will tonight) but looking at the dumps of the files and the steps that Prislav has gone through I think this should work.
The SoftSPL seems to contain nothing dangerous and I test launched it on a G4 I have on my desk to no adverse affect (in fact it did almost what I expected, not sure it is putting the device into the correct 'wait for USB' state mind you but it does answer to prods from MTTY ).
Looking at the way the file is patched (and my limited knowledge in this area may let me down, I am more of an ARM Linux hacker) is very interesting. It also looks very much like this could be wrapped into a SoftSPL flashtool that just soft patches a G3 before flashing (and also gives users a choice to flash a HardSPL if wanted, just like we do with G4’s and most modern HTC devices).
Ok,
Just an update to my last post,
I found an old G3 with a broken keyboard under my desk. IPL/SPL 2.17, ancient radio and AKU2.
SoftSPL via JumpSPL from Pof/Prislav seems to work fine .
Converted the Hard-SPL.nb to an nk.nbf (with just the SPL in it).
Flashed the resulting nk.nbf.
Device is now running a patched SPL (2.H4).
Just upgraded device to WM6 from an off the shelf ROM (had Jag 4.0 handy) using the usual NVID update tool.
The end result is an old, unhacked WM5 G3 upgraded to WM6 in a matter of mins.
Download: I will edit this post when I get home and have had a chance to upload the files to my site. - Stuck at work right now.
Edit @ 22:00, 17th Jan: Download is now up here. Use with care and don't come crying to me (or Prislav ).
HowTo: Install PatchedSPL on a G3 Wizard (or just run a SoftSPL if you flash another OS ROM at step 7 with the included flash tool).
Warning: I have only tried this with 2.* IPL’s/SPL’s, I can’t be sure it will not brick devices running 3.* or 1.* IPL’s/SPL’s. It will be a few days before I can test this so if you have a 3.* or 1.* bootloader I would suggest you leave this well alone. Do not try this on a G4, there is no point and you may well brick it .
1: Install latest ActiveSync (If you’re upgrading from WM5-6 your going to need it)
2: Download the rar from my website.
3: Copy the contents of the “Copy to root of G3 Wizard device” folder to the ROOT of your Wizard using ActiveSync.
4: From File Explorer run the SPL shortcut from the root of the device.
5: Wait for the screen to go white (you are now running a patched SoftSPL running from RAM),
6: Unplug and reconnect the USB lead to the PC (you can check the connection with MTTY if your so inclined).
7: Wait a few seconds and start the ROM upgrade in “Flash-WizG3-PatchedSPL”.
If all goes well this will work just like a normal ROM update (without anything shown on your Wizard’s screen) and your device will reboot after a few mins.
Check the version of the SPL running, if it is SPL version 2.H4 all should be fine and your now running a CID unlocked device that can take any Wizard ROM.

To be honest, very little. Both leave you free to flash a ROM of your choice .
This just uses the same 'methods' as used with newer HTC devices and the G4 Wizards.
It will also be easy enough to wrap with ROM's to create 'G3' SoftSPL upgrades that flash to any G3 device without messing about. Just grab the installer, drop your nb.nbf of choice and run the upgrade.
I'll try and bundle up such an installer tonight if I get time.
Hmmm, why do I feel like I have hijacked this thread .
John
So You mean:
You can Create such an installer than given a certain NBF (OS) does even the CID unlock itself.
It would be great

How do I flash a different ROM while on WM6?

I just got my new Cingular 8125/Wizard last week from my friend and found out about XDA developers and was intrigued with what I can do with my new device. I figured out how to flash the new WM6 onto my phone to replace the laggy WM5. Now that I have had this ROM for long enough, I'd like to change to a new ROM that I've found. Also, this new ROM is a different version of WM6. I don't know if I'm supposed to downgrade first or just start loading a new ROM on? If I am supposed to downgrade, how do I do it and what is the best program to use. Thanks in advance,
Brock
Start in the Wizard wiki (check link on top of page) where you'll find a lot of info to help you know your device; there are two generations of them. You can also get my tool - WST (check my signature) which will also help you.
Also pay attention to the stickies as they have valuable guides
good luck and welcome

Thank you. I have a G4 Wizard by the way. I looked through a lot of forums and through the Wizard Wiki and couldn't find how to flash a new ROM after on WM6, only on how to flash from the original WM5. I looked at WST and I'm a little confused. I'm not sure what it is or how to use it? Also, my phone is CDI unlocked. Also, what is the program WizardLove and what does it do? I see all the talk about it and I don't understand it.
No. You don't understand (or you didn't look carefully).
G4 Wizard CANNOT be CID unlocked with free software.
Head to the G4 subforum and look the stickies carefully,
First flash with your original carrier ROM, then use either SoftSPL or HardSPL to flash another version of WM6.

Ahh, you should have started by saying that you already knew what device you have and that already applied the HardSPL patch
Now, as long as you flash "G4 safe" ROMs (without IPL/SPL), you can try as many as you'd like. If you had used SoftSPL that would require to do it everytime you flashed a new ROM

[TUT] How to Reconstruct a Rhodium Dumped ROM & Reconstructed ROMs

I take no responsability in any damage on your device. If you're not sure what you're doing, take time to learn some basics from wiki.
This is the process to restore your Rhodium (TP2) back to the stock ROM and SPL. This should be enough for you to warranty return your device.
I have "borrowed" all of the examples from various sources on xda. Many thanks must goto jcespi2005 and JugglerLKR who created the guide and packages for the Raphael from which the majority of this is taken. The SPL "relock" procedure was taken from the Hard SPL thread. Credit to cmonex .
Prerequisites
The Rhodium Kitchen version 0.1 (Open the Zip File and read the password from the !!!readmefirst!!!.txt)
WinRAR or 7zip
RhodiumSPLRelocker_079SPL.zip
nbImg v1.1
Warning
avast! home detects buildOS as a virus, I've personally used it on my machine with AV off, and am not infected, but it's up to you.
Overview
You must follow these instructions in the order given. Once you have the Stock SPL you cannot flash any ROM's except the ones that are signed by HTC. For that reason you must restore the ROM first, then the SPL.
Step 1 - Get your Orginal ROM.
If you can find your Carrier's / Supplier's ROM on this wiki page or on their website. Please jump ahead to Step 4 - Flashing back to Shipped Stock ROM.
If you cannot find your ROM on the wiki then download this ROM : RUU_Rhodium_HTC_Europe_1.19.401.0_Radio_Rhodium_3.44.25.27_Signed_Ship.exe and proceed to Step 2 - Dumping your phones ROM.
Step 2 - Dumping your phones ROM
First you need to Dump the ROM from your Phone. Follow the instructions in this thread [TUT] Dumping an Rhodium ROM / SPL to obtain 4 *.raw files.
N.B: Although it might seem obvious to senior members, you must dump the ROM from your device before you flash it. If you have flashed another ROM to your device, then your orginal stock ROM is lost. You have 2 options, wait and see if your carrier will release one, or beg someone else with the same device to dump their ROM and share the *.raw files.
Step 3 - Reconstructing the ROM
-3.1: Extract the Kitchen to a Folder on the root of your PC (C:\, D:\, etc).
-3.2: Open the RUU_Rhodium_HTC_Europe_1.19.401.0_Radio_Rhodium_3.44.25.27_Signed_Ship.exe file with WinRAR or 7Zip and extract the ruu_signed.nbh file and place it in the BaseROM folder of the Kitchen.
-3.3: Place the Part01.raw (XIP) and Part02.RAW (IMGFS) in the BaseROM folder of the Kitchen.
-3.4: Run RhodiumKitchen.cmd in the Kitchen.
-3.5: Enter the following options into the Kitchen:
-3.6: e, b (for Dumped ROM). Press [Space] once complete.
-3.7: c, a (for Cooking a ROM).
-3.8: Press the "Play" button in BuildOS and wait for it to complete.
-3.9: Close BuildOS, Close PagePool Changer and Press [Space] to goto the main menu.
-3.10: You will now have a Flashable NBH file. Press f to Flash.
Now goto Step 5 - Removing Security Unlock
Step 4 - Flashing back to Shipped Stock ROM
If you were lucky enough to find a shipped ROM on the wiki or your carrier's / supplier's website, then just run the "ship exe" and follow the on screen instructions.
Step 5 - Removing Security Unlock
If you have purchased the SIM/CID/Security unlocker by Olipro, you can re-lock your device using the following tool : http://hpcmonex.net/htc/secrelock.zip
Step 6 - Restoring the Splash Screen
This is only needed if you couldn't find your Shipped Exe. If you have your Shipped Exe, you get the splash with it.
You're best creating a seperate folder out side the kitchen for this.
-6.1: Find a shipped exe from another WVGA device (HD or TD2).
-6.2: Extract the ruu_signed.nbh from the Shipped Exe using WinRAR or 7Zip.
-6.3: Use NBH Extract (in the Kitchen\Tools Folder) on ruu_signed.nbh
-6.4: Delete all files, except 01_MainSplash.nb.
-6.5: Use nbImg.exe as follows: nbimg.exe -F 01_MainSplash.nb -w 480 -h 800
-6.6: Delete 01_MainSplash.nb.
-6.7: Use nbImg.exe as follows: nbimg.exe -F 01_MainSplash.nb.bmp
-6.8: Use HTCRT in the Kitchen\Tools to make a NBH file from the 01_MainSplash.nb.bmp.nb file.
-6.9: Put the new NBH file and copy RhodiumCustomRUU from Kitchen\Tools into an empty Folder.
-6.10: Run the RhodiumCustomRUU.exe to Flash the Splash.
Step 7 - Flashing back to Stock SPL
-7.1: Ensure you already flashed stock ROM and Radio, because stock SPL flash is always the last step before sending the device in.
-7.2: Extract the relocker zip and run the EXE on your PC.
-7.3: If you wish to replace RUU_Signed.NBH that got extracted, feel free to do so, but not necessary (this Hard-SPL will only allow overwrite with a SPL signed by our custom cert). The included one is the 0.79.0000 stock SPL.
-7.4: Flash the Stock SPL
-7.5: Verify if it flashed by checking version in bootloader screen, it should say 0.79.0000, not 0.85.OliNex.

First, thanks for this. I write a fair amount of documentation of my work as a network admin so I know how time consuming this is.
cdguider has been kind enough to dump and reconstruct the TMoUS ROM so I don't actually need to do this (although I may just for the exercise) but I do want to start learning how to modify this ROM to suit my own needs. Is there a guide up that will get us newbies started on using the kitchen? Hopefully one that explains in detail what each of the kitchen tools are and what they do as well as how the Rhodium ROM is constructed. I prefer to understand what I am doing versus following recipe steps. For example, My Hermes ROM was partitioned into the ROM and an extended ROM where carriers could put their installers. Does the Rhodium have an ExtROM?
OK, back to the search tool.

No it doesn't.
For help with this Kitchen, see _Alex_'s cooking guides on the wiki for the Kaiser. That's where I started reading and then I just kept going, download kitchens published by other chefs and see how they put stuff together. There are two main types buildOS (like this one) and PRB that uses bepe's platform rebuilder - ervius's visual kitchen is based on it.
Thanks

Just click the [X] in the top right.
Pressing space will take you to the first set of options that the batch file offered you.
Thanks

That's a label in the batch file .
Search for it in the RhodiumKitchen.CMD and see what's called from there.
P.S. I don't have this kitchen on this computer so a lot of guess work and memory on my part.

Yes, but I can't recall where I saw it . It's not for the TP2 though, maybe HD or TP.

Porting isn't simple, have a look for some tutorials on using BuildOS and porting.
Adding and removing programs, to add, just create OEM packages, to remove, just remove them.
Have a look at _Alex_'s cooking tutorials on the Kaiser Wiki.

Question
Hi everyone ...
First of all Thanks alot for this Tut Dave awesome work.
I dumped my Stock Rom from a unbranded O2 TP2 and rebuild it.
For Cooking i used the signed_ruu from RUU_Rhodium_HTC_Europe_1.19.401.0_Radio_Rhodium_3. 44.25.27_Signed_Ship.exe
It did everything like described and i've got a
signed_ruu.nbh (1.19.207.1) newest o2 Stock Rom.
Should be fine right?
Do i also need to do Step 6 so creating a splash screen?
If anyone needs this rom drop me a message ...

Remove Hard-SPL

Hi, can you help me with how to remove the Hard-SPL to upgrade to the original ROM for HTC Touch Pro 2. I'm from Bulgaria, the phone is not locked to an operator (AT & T Orange), etc. What files will I need and how. I also want to download the original Rom from the site of HTC. Thanks in advance!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550131
All info you need is here.
One note from my experience: first downgrade to original rom then install original spl. I had an issue, it was bricked, but all it needed was to one more time upgrade original rom.
You mean that you must first install the original Rom (I could not download it from HTC's site can help you). And then correct me if I'm wrong:
First you say to install the original ROM.
2nd to download RhodiumSPLRelocker_079SPL.zip unzip it and run. Exe
3rd Stock_SPL_Restore_084.zip to download and in the same way as putting a new ROM to choose it (unzip it first)
Do I need to do Hard Reset at any time? And maybe a little help otkade to download original ROM.
I did this from the link you gave me in boot loadera get out this Oninex, then I load again ROM-a which had previously tried to put my original and gave me an error
The instructions say to flash the stock ROM before you re-lock SPL.
I have failed to: (i already made a re-lock SPL ... now what to do: (
I am still with Energy ROM, which I had to do before re-spl .. in boot loadera now I do not go Olinex 0,85 as before ... what to do?
Sorry for my bad English!

i don't think you can re-lock your phone with custom rom on your phone but what you do is hard_spl it (if spl re-locked) then
task 29 ----> install stock rom ----> re-lock spl
good to go
Isteglih his RUU_Rhodium_S2_HTC_Europe_2.07.401.1_Radio_Rhodium _4.49.25.91_Signed_Ship
this is the right Stock Rom correct me if I'm wrong. Inastaliram it and to 0% gave me an error. - 294 Invalid Vender ID.
But it's not e what I need.
I'm not too far into things ...
Please help, now I can not get no ROM, and this olinex do not write anymore. and gives me an error any attempt to put the new ROM. Now when I work under the Energy ROM ...
Hi
Before flashing another rom, please use the tool called task29. get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=649191
Check here for another rom for your device http://rapidshare.com/#!download|33...dio_Rhodium_4.49.25.17_Signed_Ship.exe|180171
or here http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=windows mobile&model=Rhodium
use the SPL relocker tool LAST
Good luck!
Hello, thank you for the help you gave me, but I think we still have a problem (task29). Do the following:
1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=649191 here I lost my task29.zip.
2 - unzip it, inside there was task29, had ROMUpdateUtility.exe. ROMUpdateUtility.exe and opened as follows next .. next .. me and sticks to 0%.
In the above post I mentioned that yesterday I did relock SPL before I know that I need to do this first (I do not write now in olinex boot loadera). I think from there
:-( you're in bad way. look for some help here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550540
The solutions mentioned above will NOT work, because you don't have hardspl installed.
Flash Hardspl again and then restore to stock rom and spl.
Guessed for it, but waited for someone to tell me. I will use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550131 and you will get new and will write what happened. Thanks!
I made myself a new Hard-SPL. After I did task29. After you've installed the new ROM. After I did Relock-SPL. Now everything is OK.
Many thanks to all who helped me!

How did you MAKE a new HardSPL ? When I did this mistake, I had to buy another HardSPL to unlock it because the license I had for the first time was already used up.
