I made this thread because I'm pretty sure other threads are made of this topic but I wanted to create a newer one since all these new products are coming out.
I would choose Apple because:
1)Selling over priced, under powered (for the price) computers that have no customization (well barely and I mean like building your own)
2) Changing the animal on their OS, add a .1, add features that can come in an update, and calling it a whole new OS.
3) Selling the iPhone and making the iPad (the iPod touch seems like the only good Apple Product). They don't know what the term "smart" phone means. I mean no multi tasking, boring, un-creative UI. The features in the iPhone/iPad may have been ground breaking 7 years ago but not today.
4) How it makes the fanboyz/fangirlz go crazy about the product because they hypnotized them about how they are good and the other companies are evil. The fanboyz/fangirlz are mad because they spent a lot of cash on an over priced piece of doo-doop) and they have to unleash their anger on past mistakes of another company while forgetting about the new features in the product today.
I like only one thing of apple products and mostly their software for computers: They have pretty good video editing software and that is pretty much it.
Unleash your inner fanboy/fangirl and just rant.
Apple has done a lot for the world though, with the ipod influencing other MP3 players, as well as showing that the linux based operating system can be used in mainstream media. I'd go more with AT&T and verizon mostly because of the monopolies that they have on the cell phone market right now. I'd rather have no contract phones which allow a pay per use plan. Either that or Walmart because of their screwing consumers.
All the oil/petroleum companys!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you completely. Don't forget Quicktime (terrible UI and runs background services), iTunes (way to lock up music, Apple), iPods (same dial, same disk space, half the price elsewhere), and the iPod touch (what's the purpose or purchasing a stand-alone portable media wifi device again? that must come in real handy on the beach, in clubs, bars, and everywhere else wifi doesn't exist).
Also, who can really respect a company that basically releases dumbed-down technology basically saying that their customers are slow and stupid and lack self-respect when it comes to not being able to customize their portable devices? Notice how in the Windows Phone 7 Series walk-through found on MSDN today, the president/manager of the project said, "If you buy the phone we are going to let you customize it."
Also, special mention for Verizon, who really has worked hard to rip off the average consumer.
verizon. worst company ever.
AT$T has to go. This is undoutedly the worst company in the world. They have their heads so far up Apple's ass they should be called Apple T$T.
They simply do not care that people hate them, they have no new phones, except updated Tilts and Diamonds. They have the absolute worst customer service
http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/...sumer-reports-best-cell-phone-service-survey/
Latest example: My wife and I split ( no big deal , long time coming ) she decided that she wanted to take the iPhone that I bought her and the Propel that I bought her son, both of which I had put on my account, and get her own acount with AT$T. Without any notice to me, AT$T allowed her to take the phones and signed her up to two new two year contracts, and as I only found out yesterday, charged me with $300 dollars in early termination fees. When I challenged them on this, they said that I can always continue to pay for the numbers until the contract runs out. I asked them , since they allowed her to take the phone off of my account, why don't they just terminate the contract.
They informed me that the contract was for the numbers not the handsets. And that who ever was using the handsets, was out of their control. They further said that the contracts are meant to offset the subsidizing of the phones. I clearly pointed out that holding me to the balance of the original contract for the phones and then signing them up to two new two year contracts for the same two phones, was " double dipping " and that any reasonable customer service rep who wanted to keep a 7 year customer with four phones on AT$T would see that by cancelling the two contracts, AT$T was not losing any money and had infact guaranteed themselves more money by signing the ex and her son to two new 2 year contracts.
At which point they continued their mantra " the contract was for the phone numbers, not the phones themselves. " At which point, I cancelled the two phones that I had that were out of contract. Put the ex and her son's # on suspended service for $9.99 a month until the contract expires. And now must make a decision on what to do with my iPhone in July when that contract runs out. In the last seven years, I have paid AT$T $ 10,000- $14,000 in connection fees, and some dope in their customer service dept is forcing me to go elsewhere over $300 in early termination fees that are being paid for by " double dipping " in another account. Stupidity like this has got to go.
Where would this company be if Steve Jobs decides to yank there heads out of his butt ?
Oh Yeah, iPhone, Mac Book, iPod touch, 2 iMacs, U2 iPod classic = Apple Fanboy here.
Everybody hates the people who " get it "
Rogers Wireless, which used to be Rogers AT&T. We're seeing a pattern here
Probably AT&T. AT&T has terrible service nearly everywhere, crappy customer service (moreso than most telcos), and poor overall selection of devices.
Ever since the iPhone was introduced, AT&T has basically given up on maintaining their network at a usable level. The worst is when you call their terrible customer service only to be greeted by a voice announcing that they are "home of the iPhone" before you actually get help. I don't hate the iPhone, I have a few of them in fact, but I hate how AT&T having exclusivity over the iPhone has led to them ignoring all other aspects of their company.
They've almost forgotten about Windows Mobile and have completely ignored Android and WebOS devices, instead opting for more feature phones, because we all need more $20 Nokias and Samsungs. AT&T stopped trying once they got exclusivity of the iPhone, figuring that they wouldn't have to actually get business by being good at what they do, but rather by forcing people into switching in order to get their desired device.
If you don't believe me about the terrible customer service, I have a story for you. For Christmas of 2009, my mother and sister wanted iPhone 3GSes to replace their aging original iPhones. My father I waited to go to the AT&T store until the night before, because one of the incompetent CS representatives we talked to over the phone said that the original iPhones would deactivate, and we didn't want them deactivated for very long, should they need their phones. However, this was untrue, meaning we had to wait in long lines on Christmas Eve when we could have bought the iPhones months ago with no negative effects
After we finally got served by a representative, we were told that the bill we had mailed out almost two weeks ago still hadn't been processed yet, and in order to pay the lower upgrade price instead of the full retail price (~$500), we would have to pay the bill at the store, and have the check we mailed out be credited to our account. After we did that, the lady sold us the iPhones, which seemed fine. Except it wasn't fine, since she upgraded of the iPhones on my father's account, instead of my mother's which was a pain to deal with when we bought my father an iPhone a few weeks later. After we finally got the iPhones and drove home, we immediately got a call from the AT&T store, letting us know that the woman who sold us the iPhones had forgotten to put one of them back in the box after activating it, meaning we had to drive back again and pick up the phone which they forgot. The moral of this story is that AT&T is a horrible company, and a good portion of their customer service representatives are incapable of doing their jobs properly or giving correct information.
I actually have a few more AT&T stories to share, but I think I'd probably run past the 10,000 character post limit were I to share them all
AT&T...I left them a few years ago because of their ripoff plans, iphonia, no customer support, etc.

This is true! I listed one, but could have easily listed hundreds!
I'm not against corporations in general; I'd love to take money from consumers to better myself. But I do have a problem with every Apple idiot thinking Apple is doing great when really they are just taking advantage of people without their own identities and morons.
Yesterday's closing stock prices:

I'm hoping that this is sarcasm and that you realize that this is actually support against Apple's dominance. Stock prices for the most part are based on hype and a LACK of knowledge about a company. There's more idiots than smart people in the US, so a company like Apple should thrive. George W. Bush got elected twice. There are plenty of idiots around to think Apple is worth it.

Anyone else taking advantage of their sale this weekend? All Smartphones are FREE with a 2 yr. contract. The wife and I have been month to month since December, so I think were gonna take advantage and pick up some new phones.
Pretty sure i'm gonna get an HD7, after seeing a lot of vids, threads, playing with it in store it seems like a really solid device and after using Android for 2 yrs it seems like it's gonna be a nice change. Originally wanted a Dell Venue Pro, but the HD7 will be FREE , and the DVP is having a decent amount of issues at the moment.
The wife wants to stick with Android, she'll probably get a my touch 4g..
Anyway..just seeing if anyone else is taking advantage of this sale
I would if I weren't an Even More Plus customer. I did however buy one outright and couldn't be happier. I am eagerly awaiting the first update, but even without it everything is grand.
Yeah we were on even more plus, gonna go back on contract though. I think their unlimited plan with 3000min is $150 right now
I can't go back on contract. My bill after taxes is $131. That is 2 lines, unlimited talk and unlimited data (believe it or not we don't text). Even if I want to add unlimited family text, it takes me up to $150 after taxes. That's unbeatable for unlimited everything on 2 lines.
I just buy phones outright now. I more than make up the savings, especially when you bring in the Craigslist factor.

My Wife and I got the HD7 this weekend and love them. i came from The Vibrant and she came from a blackberry
I convinced my dad to get an hd7 off the tmobile website
free...no rebate and it should be here tuesday!
i love my hd7
yep, took advantage of it...I got the HD7 the wife got a mytouch 4g...I tried to convince her to go for windows phone 7, but she stuck with Android.
Great deal none the less...phones were free and we got the special they're running on 3000 minutes, unlimited everything: $150/month
It was kind of annoying how much the sales people were pushing Android, they really didn't have anything good to say about windows phone 7...multiple times they repeated "yeah all the workers here use Android, we all have mytouch 4g's"
That sucks to hear. You'd think they'd be partial to all platforms.
Yeap, just picked up the HD7 from the T-Mobile site. Can't beat free. Got a Moto Defy last month that I'm enjoying but I guess I'll give it to the wife. That's if I can convince her to take it. She had a T-Mobile Tap for a bit last year and it left a bad taste in her month concerning touch screens. lol She's using a Samsung Gravity II now but I think I can convince her the Defy is better device.
Preordered an 8GB the 27th of June like a good fanboy. Waited a few weeks and got it the 17th of July. Right out of the box, my excitement is a bit dampened when the screen flickers.
Browse through xda, lots of people with the same issue, must be software right? Oh, this phone and this tablet had it, a software patch fixed it. I give it a few days. Flickering getting very annoying, and as it becomes apparent that it's a hardware issue, people start complaining about units with far worse issues. I hesitate but finally decide to RMA the thing with 1 day left on my "Buyer's remorse" refund period. I'm promised the unit would be checked for such defects before being shipped out.
Yesterday another brand new Nexus arrives, double taped. And, sure enough, it's worse. Not only does it flicker harder than the original, but it has a yellow tint to the screen and a dead pixel right in the middle. Call Google ask if I can ship the new, worse unit back and hold onto my old one until a proper replacement arrives. Rep says I'm SOL since now my 15 days are up, here's the number to Asus. Call Asus, told do a factory reset and call back if problem persists (waste of a call). Call them again, now I'm told I have to ship the thing myself, wait two weeks and either get a new one or a repaired one. No friggin' way.
Call Google again, ready for a phone fight with the reps so they would escalate this. Had I known the replacement would have been (more!) defective, I would have returned the unit right then an there. Tell the rep I'm very upset and that I want to ship both tablets back, get my money back and be done with it. Says that's beyond the scope of what he can do, so he "escalates" the issue to a Google specialist via email, who should get in touch with me "within the next few days due to high order volume".
So now I wait patiently for a reply, hopefully one that doesn't say I'm not their problem anymore. I just want my money back so can I waltz into a retailer and buy a 16GB Nexus, and return it right there if the damn thing is defective.
Good luck. I'm sure Google is swamped with similar issues and it's highly unlikely that you can get your old unit back. However, while you wait get a sheet of paper out and a nice pen and write a tasteful letter to a Google exec. that is in charge with Customer Relations and/or Product Marketing and explain your dis-satisfaction. Don't expect a replacement unit to come to your door next day, but I've found that the "Old fashioned" way of communicating with a company is sometimes the quickest way to get heard. It can at least get your foot in the door.
Good luck.
I had a similar issue. Wasn't happy with first Nexus 7 and got an RMA. The second one arrives and it's even worse.
I called Google asking if I can RMA the second one and keep the first while I wait for the third. The rep says no. But minutes after hanging up with her I got a new RMA number that included the serial number of my second Nexus 7. I clicked the link to request the replacement, like I did the first time. Boxed up the second Nexus 7 and shipped it back.
I got the third Nexus 7 today, still have my first.
Sadly however, I can not ****ing believe it, but the third is even worse than the second. Google and ASUS must be playing some practical joke on me or something. So at this point I shipping both tablets back. Between my iPad 3 and Galaxy Nexus, I didn't need the Nexus 7 that damn bad anyway. Just disappointing that ASUS's quality is such a nightmare that I could get 3 tablets and they all have defects.
So to understand the OP.
#1. Buy new Nexus 7 from Google directly its defective
#2. Get new Nexus 7 directly from Google, its defective but worse.
#3. Google tells you to call ASUS for repairs pay for shipping to ASUS yourself.
#4. Finally give up want to return second worse Nexus 7 back to Google for refund rep in India (I am guessing) says its beyond their scope. Has to wait days for a Specialist to grant their holy permission to I am hoping your return for full refund the Nexus 7 while you can.
All while waiting days if not weeks
Note to self from now on Buy Apple, from Apple store if defective, return to Apple store, walk out with new one.
Just so happens I am very happy with my Nexus 7, but had I experienced a fraction of the problems I would have been out a while ago.

Seriously, I mean there's a difference between first batch quirks and units falling apart being shipped out. I mean, thankfully neither of my units had screen lift or dead touch zones, but any of these problems are things that never should make it through Quality Control regardless.
And while I am very disillusioned with Google at the moment, I still place most of the blame on Asus. For now...

Judging by the dozen posts you've made on here so far, I'd like to see what you'd have to say if you weren't "very happy".
So how can people on a developer forum...who have no connection to Google or Asus, help you? What would you like this community to do for you?

I'm sorry I'm double posting but I just want to say something. Ummmm, you say that if he buys at apple and it seems to be defective he can just go straight to the apple store and tell them that his phone is defective and they will just give him a new 1 and he will walk out with a new 1 well couldn't he do that if with his nexus seven if he had bought his nexus 7 from target gamestop or office max I'm pretty sure he could you're making it out like any device bought from apple that if a defection comes up at anytime he can just take that device right back to apple and walk out with a new 1 i mean you're forgetting to mention the fact of the of how much apple charges for a simple defect let's just say his microphone bad well that cost my dad 117 dollars for him to walk out with a new iphone and it turns out that was just a simple software problem. Nexus 7 would be perfectly fine if he would have just bought it from any retailer instead of pre ordering from google play. It's not his fault of the device is faulty we all know now that asus is having some production problems with the nexus 7 but it seems that the ones but from retailers are pretty good. And if he buys on from a retailer thats not pretty good he can just walk right back to that retailer and switch it out for a good 1. Just like he could do at apple.
I'm sorry if there is some grammar problems here I used google voice to type out this entire thing because I just did not feel like typing and I love my nexus 7 on how it can understand me almost perfectly

That might be what you think. . I have not had any problems with my Nexus 7 (thank god). No screen lift what so ever, no dead pixels (yet), and no screen "flicker" (I don't even know what people are calling a screen flicker). So far Im counting my blessings as my ASUS Tranformer Prime was an absolute nightmare. I do however, think that the display is awful. Its much better than my Prime, but it is out great at all. The colors are off, it ghosts for a few seconds after watching a video, Netflix looks awful, and text looks blurry. I've always been partial to display tech, but I was expecting much more out of this display. When you put it up next to the retina iPad it is no competition. I still love my 7 and wont be getting rid of it anytime soon and most of all I was expecting a lot out of a $200 tablet, but I can't help but imagine how much better this device would be if HTC or Samsung produced it (Motorola would be far worse than ASUS IMHO). Say what you will about Apple, but you get a far superior product especially in display tech (the best spec by far in my opinion). You also get much better customer service, better apps, and there is not a company that comes close to competing with Apple and Jony Ive in build quality in phones, tablets, or any tech period.
I love the Nexus 7. But a good quality display is the most important thing and it's a shame ASUS seems to have royally screwed this up with a lot of the Nexus 7s. My freaking Nook Color looks better (besides the lower DPI) and it was a cheap tablet too.
I would have rather seen the Nexus 7 go with a cheaper TI OMAP 4 processor instead of the Tegra 3 if it meant a better quality display.
I've decided to get a refund after 3 bad tablets and it kills me because this is the one and only Nexus tablet.

First of all if Apple charged your dad $117 dollars for an issue with software (or what turned out to be software) then there is def more to the story. Your dad must have been past the 1 yr warranty or had some very noticeable damage to the device (they could tell it had been dropped or misused doesn't have to be held together by duck tape or anything). Apple doesn't even ask questions if you are under warranty they simply take it back, check for water and physical damage, sometimes check for a resolution, check your warranty and replace your device. I've dealt with them for years and they have far and away the best customer service of any tech brand (maybe even any brand ever). I even had a 2008 Unibody Macbook and before I replaced it in September I had a major issue with the device not charging. It ended up being the logic board which is far and away the most expensive part to replace and I did not have Apple care at all. They could have pushed me out of the store as they didn't need to do anything. They ended up charging me $149 (which is just a little more than you claimed they charged your dad for an iPhone which is much cheaper in comparison) which was for parts and labor and within 2 days I had my laptop back. Not only that, but they replaced my battery with a new one, replaced my head phone jack as the rep stated it had moved slightly in over the years, and even warrantied the entire laptop for another year at no charge. Keep in mind this is almost 3 years later. That is customer care. Over the years I've constantly chosen Android over iOS as I love to tinker, am learning to code in college, like the open OS, and best of all it looks great and offers customizability. I dumped my iPhone 3Gs years ago and got me the Nexus One (best phone I've ever owned despite the many problems) and hadn't looked back until this year. I still have a Galaxy Nexus and just got the Nexus 7, but I dumped my Xoom and Prime for the retina iPad thinking I could deal with iOS for the much better display. I was blown away by how much better iOS has gotten. Now I use both and like things about both. I even got me an iPhone 4S which although a much smaller display and no LTE is still probably my favorite phone for many reasons. The display is almost 2 1/2 years old and still no Android OEM has caught up and the iPad will not be dethroned for a long time to come. I usually just read comments, but I just got done reading one of your ignorant de Apple posts and got done posting and saw this post. I don't know what your problem is with Apple, but I can almost bet my bank account you have never used or owned one of their products (outside of maybe an iPod as who hasn't). I don't see why so many people have to love either Android or iOS and absolutely detest the other. Either way you more than likely have never used the other OS more than a couple minutes and feel you need to defend your purchase to the death.

I've decided to get a refund after 3 bad tablets and it kills me because this is the one and only Nexus tablet.

I feel exactly the same. I was pretty excited that Google/ASUS went with a 1280x800 on a 7 inch display as that puts the ppi right up there with my retina iPad. Boy have I been let down. I didnt expect a lot as my Prime always let me down on the display front, but they really cheaped out on the display on the 7. It is not even in the same ballpark as the retina iPad.
I feel bad that you have so many issues with yours as I dont have any problems except just the quality of the display. Oh well i bought it as a glorified ereader and love the 7 inch form factor, but my usage from the first week has severely dropped and Ive gone back to my iPad and even my iPhone as I just cant get over the display. Some or holding out for a software fix, but Im not crossing my fingers as I think it was just poor decisons on the overall quality of products. I can say one thing tho despite the issues I have with it it was well worth $200 and it is still far and away the best Android tablet out and I dont see that changing until maybe the higher res Samsung that is rumored. Even then it will be held back by Touchwiz software and never be updated and I wont get me another Android device period unless it is Nexus branded and it runs pure Google.

It flickers when brightness is below 30% and there is wifi activity, regardless of autobrightness. The rep who accepted my original RMA said this was a known "shielding issue" with some units.

You are 100% wrong. I had an iPhone for quite a long time, and I liked it, until I realized how closed sourced it was. So I got an ascend from cricket. Sure it was slow and laggy as hell, but I could modify it to make it a bit better. And when my dads mic went out, (nothing else was wrong with the phone it was a beautiful looking iPhone.) And apple charged him all that money just because of the work they had to do. It pissed me off. There are many reasons why I hate apple. Such as there relentless no support of flash, and the fact of how they constantly release a "new" iPhone that is the EXACT same body build as the last one just with a few different components inside. Talk about creativity. I mean do they even listen to their customers??? Everyone was complaining about how the idea of raised glass on the front, and strong plastic on the back was a bad idea for durability, but did they listen? Hell no, they were just like "Hey look its the new, revolutionary iPhone 4.......S!!!!" Holy crap! Its so revolutionary, it has a dual core processor, oh wait, that was done a long time ago, well it has an 8 megapixel camera, oh wait, that was done in 2008, well this thing sucks....

I agree with you about how crappy and overrated the iPhone is but, (this is gonna kill me to defend Apple) the person you're calling 100% wrong sure isn't if the phone was under warranty. They would not have charged $117. I know several people that had issues with their devices. They just walked into an Apple Store, and walked out with a brand new one. Recently, my sister's 7 month old iPad had a broken power button. She just took it the store, they loaded all her data on to a new one, and she left with a brand new device.

Update! No email all week, so I got impatient and called a rep. Explained my situation, stressed the fact that I need this thing to take notes and classes start in about two weeks for me, so I can't afford to have a conversation by email that takes days per reply. Finally he offered to either RMA the replacement, or wait about two weeks for a full refund after a specialist reviews my case. I figured I'd try my luck (third time's the charm?) and go with another replacement.
That sure beats the heck out of paying for shipping and waiting two weeks for Asus to repair/replace my tablet! The rep also said if, for some reason, the third unit is also defective, that a refund would pretty much be guaranteed due to the extreme circumstances. Certainly have a much better feeling about the situation right now, since I'm not just being told I'm someone else's problem or to wait for days to get an update on the situation by email.
There's just no good hardware makers for android out there this will probley be my last android tablet period to people who say they rather have Samsung HTC build it for what? So they can charge 600 for a pos that creaks and falling apart and no updates I'm really starting to understand why people buy apple I'm just to OCD for android I've had many android phones all of them a pos android is the poor folk apple
Until Google makes there own stuff like apple screw them I won't be fooled anymore regardless how boring iOS is

Don't buy your teen a smartphone.

Don't be so quick to think that way. First of all, the article's only argument is that the price is high, and it is cheaper to use Facebook and twitter from home. In addition, it even states an argument against itself (I like it because the author is not biased) which says the teen years are a memorable time and the convenient camera captures those memories.
So basically, buy a Galaxy Nexus off contract (~$270), activate it on a cheap prepaid plan, and blam! You don't even need to get data, just have him connect to WiFi.
In fact, you can even just get an unlocked Nexus S (~$130) or Galaxy S (~$100) and they should fit his needs enough.
The article pertains to on contract high end phones (specifically an iPhone 5), but you can greatly reduce the price by buying a previous flagship and use a prepaid plan.

True but teens fall into peer pressure and the iPhone is the greatest status symbol.
It might just be cheaper to get the iPhone 5 unlocked...but $650 to fish out is a lot of money..considering you could buy a full fledged laptop in that same amount...or an HD LED TV from Sony.

Yep, so don't get him an iPhone 5. Or any iPhail for that matter.
Like I said, there's still the Galaxy Nexus which is pretty good as it is, and for your sons needs even a Galaxy S or Nexus S would be enough. Dirt cheap now that they are 2 years old, but solid performers. Plenty development, so (if it even matters to him) he will have the latest version of Android running on it.
I agree, peer pressure is definitely a factor, but getting an Android stands out among all the iPhones I see in teens' hands these days

I wouldn't buy my child a smartphone until they're 15 or older, so many kids text during class now, no wonder kids are less educated than when I went to school.
Well, brace yourselves, here comes a 16 year olds opinion. What my dad did was get me a plan, but I had to buy the phone. It was great because it taught me some responsibility and gave me some leeway. Please don't lock your kid down from having a social life, also don't let him buy an iPhone. And yes, this nexus 4 was paid for in while by me. As where my previous 3 phones.

Well, the thing is even dumb phones can text, so in order to prevent that you need to not let your child have a phone at all.
Or just good parenting

Let me tell you one thing. When I was in hs we all had blackberries and iphones 3g. Yes there were those kid who were into drama and stuff and non stop texting and they don't learn anything but there good uses for 15 year old to have a cell.
Although I don't condone cheating Google the answer to capital of new York is better than guessing a wrong answer because you'll know and remember rather than go on not knowing.
The other is for communication. Especially after what happened in Connecticut you child needs to call out or if they go out and get peer pressured to do something bad, they can call a friend to come or call you to pick them up before they are guilty by association.
Last reason is that bullying. We want the best phones and kid like to make fun of others who are less fortunate then they are. When you get older you view being bullying differently but could be devastating for a teen who hasn't experienced the adult world.
Smartphone for teen. Lab top or PC. Yes

The Nexus S is not going to get the Key Lime Pie update...
Without updates, its going to go out of style very fast. Galaxy Nexus is still a solid buy
Buddy you'll be shocked that lots of decent developers here on xda-developers are teen. I myself started symbian development at the age of 17. So I think it's best not to generalize teens.
I had to pay for my first smartphone and Plan. The only thing I had was a "dumb phone" and it was for 911 only. So any teen who thinks getting a smartphone is in the bill of rights, need's to get a job. ( If want to give them one as a gift, because they did well or what ever ok.) But Don't make them think for one sec it's a right to have a free smartphone+plan.
That's all I have to say.
If they work for it that is great, but if a teenager wants something enough they can make money to get it

Learn the magic of ROMs, boy. The Nexus S didn't even get the 4.2 update, but voila! A few days after the N4 was released, 4.2 ROM!
Also, if your kid isn't really like the teens on xda, he probably won't know or care about software updates.

As a 15 year old teen, I'd say that, by a side, it does indeed can get in the way of school. Sometimes I get distracted with it instead of studing (at home). But, on another side, I see it as my tool to do a lot of things during my day. I listen to music with it, I often access my school website for grading check (hard to explain my school grade method) during classes with data (no WiFi access to students), I write all my tests, control my classes with it, takes notes, be related to school or not, it's also my communtication tool. And many other things not mentioned...

Tell your son that. Let him choose the plan and the phone as long as he pays for it. You will have to make sure he doesn't get some crap China phone that'll break in a day, but otherwise it's all up to him to find the best deals etc.

Exactly. A phone basically should have thing in mine, to get in contact with some1 when they are doing a lot of work. Something was when I first got a job, my parents got me a phone so I could makes calls when I wasn't in school.
Since upgrading to a smartphone, its more than just a phone, you can access the internet with it and it can be a huge distraction, but its so much better then most phones out there.
To give your son a smartphone is a big resposibility, but something I learned is you gotta work to earn it, cant just give it for no work. f he has good grades and shows responsibility with it, then he deserves it. If he starts to show hes slacking behind, then its trouble

Dam.
You must not take a lot of notes cause I am sure you could write much faster than typing on that tiny keyboard.
I bought my teenage daughter a cheap laptop. Put k9 browser on it, an old refurbed iPod 2nd Gen and locked the iTunes store and safari, and then put k9 on it too. She has a dumb phone to call in emergencies and text her friends with. The locks at 8pm and if I see that her grades are slipping the phone and iPod become mine again. If I see she is spending all her time in front of a TV or computer theybget turned off and she goes outside.
That being said she is in Beta club. Gets A's and B's and has as much of a social life as she needs. She also won her class's physical fitness award. The place I spoil her is I let her do some name brand shopping for clothes. As long as I approve.
All in all we have our disagreements but she "gets by" lol.

Ive come to realize that everything and everyone has value and can be bought in the market for higher than actual prices or bought, traded and many times stolen then sold on the black market. Many people has been designated as being valued at 7 one dollar bills and some change. Sadly I thought it was ridiculously low before I found out it wasn't the 8.50 in my mind. So with everything breaking just in time for the newest release and commericials making the guy with an old phone look like an outcast its no wonder antidepressants have many pharmaceutical companies counting their money, not because theyre worried about a bill or a kids lunch money but because its not.illegal for companies to rob and steal from people even though if one of us did what they do we are looking at 25 years easy behind bars. Yea, conning people out of their money and bank robbery are serious crimes unless you have Inc. Or Co. after your name. My reason for this is because the little flappy plug broke off on my.Samsung galaxy.s4 active after 2 months and now its not considered water resistant anymore. Not like it was anyways but now instead of replacing it they say its not covered because the usb cover isnt on there like I took it off so I could root it or something. So they can sell a defective item and when it defects it somehow legally puts them in a more financially sound place. Wow what a mission statement. Our motto here at [email protected] "If it was made more than 6 months ago and still works, we made it wrong." Now I.understand why a lot of items have inspectors initials or numbers on them. Cuz when they get all the defectives back they can see.whose are still on the street and get Donald Trump in there to say "you're fired," and they use his or her next check to give bonuses to defective unit inspectors for units going bad one day outside the 3 day warranty they legally had to issue.
What geniuses they are to promote blogs and such, just like this one here, so we can read and complain to each other and drop the number of would be complaints to there websites and call centers by an estimated 70%. Blog it up America. Letter from our government and Big biz>>>>>*

Well so long, you are forever in our thoughts and stuff, the best double agent that ever has or will of been. Can you imagine if people took to the streets in protest again. Budget, deficit, two words I refuse to say, hurts to type them. Yes we can change whatever we want to.

P.S. Facebook likes you, we lied and said you liked her too. I mean without her we would still be hacking myspace and aol accounts. Anyway she's a big fan. Millions of thanks, a billion more if China keeps up its westernized movement. So long you sly devil.
So im taking donations to hopefully get a website/company up and.running that takes complaints from you and sends them to the proper company or calls them. Whatever it takes to get these complaints heard by the ones selling this garbage instead of calming others down because they feel better that it wasnt just them that got robbed. Its time to be heard and they better hire some people to listen if I have anything to type about it. Peace fellow humans.
The flappy cover was crap, but it's not a conspiracy.
This reminds me of What Really Grinds My Gears by Peter Griffin.
I can not deny that there some truth in your post, manufacterers want you to buy new phones so they can make more Katjing.
Yesterday I ordered the S4 Active and I'm very excited about it.
After some online research I've come to the conclusion that the S4 Active is NOT made for being dipped into water.
Some tests showed that you CAN dip it into water, without damaging it. But some showed that the water damaged the phone's screen.
Of course, we don't know if those second tests were performed under the right circumstances, e.g, phone cover, usb jack, water temperature, although most testers say they were. Capability of assuring those circumstances is another story.
I am still going to use this phone to make underwater pictures, but to brag and showboat by deliberately throwing it into water is certainly not worth risking a 500$ device.
PS: I called Samsung and asked about the warranty. They told me you can NOT use it in a hot shower, because of the (hot) steam. Besides that, she said that the phone has been designed for taking low depth underwater pictures. If it should damage anyway, you can send it to Samsung, which will probably take at least 4 weeks, and they will investigate if it was a defect device.
If it is, you're getting a new one. If it isn't, it was probably your fault. If it wasn't your fault, then you just got screwed.

I treated it like a new born baby and my galaxy note i717 sucked from the moment I go it. Then 2 years later 2 months before I was eligible for my next upgrade the turd phone's charging port went and a week later it would switch from full 5 bars of cell signal to 0 signal and drop calls all the time...AT&T didn't care I had insurance but it would have cost $200 to get a new phone cause the note was no longer made. They wanted to give me a note 2. I declined because the note three was coming out in a week and a half. I just got a new phone plan and got the S4 active. No problems since. I was mighty pissed though!!

I agree my defy lasted me a whole two years i went caving with it, climbing, fishing and dropped it in the sea once where it sunk to at least a meter and once it was in my fishing box that fell over board and still worked, i took it sailing while it was in my pocket, my pocket filled with water but the phone was fine only trouble was the screen did get a fair few scratches on it by the time i sold it. the little flap was much better on that too
the s4 active i had to send one off for a broken gsm reciever and one for water damage all i did was walk in the rain for a few hours.
so the next one that came i stripped it and filled it with non toxic fisk tank sealant put it back together added a wireless charger filled the back cover and all screw holes with sealant and filled the flappy port with sealant and hopefully now it should be all good thinking of sticking kitkat aosp on it now as samsung are taking an age to release 4.4
