Delorme Street Atlas USA

Has anyone used Delorme Street Atlas USA with the Kaiser? It looks like a decent alternative to Tom Tom...

It is currently not compatiable with Kaiser and they are aware of the problem.
When you close the program or tell it to disconnect from GPS it locks up your device.
I can confirm this behavior as I spent the money to buy it. Wasable to convince Best Buy to accept it back. DeLorme offered to refund my purchase price in the event that Best Buy wouldn't allow the return.
Good company that has been doing maps for a long time, I hope they sort the problem out quickly.

I looked at it due to the price and thought that it would be a great buy, but the reviews on Amazon were less than steller. Several reviewers complained the maps were not up to date, but the big thing that sold me away from it was a mention elsewhere that "within the desktop application, you actually select and create a map for a specific circumstance." http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,56666&start=2
What if I'm already away from home and need to get directions? That won't for for me, sorry. I guess I'll shell out the big bucks for TomTom or similar.

They offer a 30 day mbg. I got my check yesterday. It's a nice program but doesn't play nice with the tilt. It was also missing a feature i like, directions by gps position. You always had to give it a start and end, with Tomtom or WLS you can just tell the program to start where you currently are.

It is not, by any means, a decent alternative.
Its user interface is extremely clunky, and it is SLOW. POI Search and routing on-device is essentially useless in SA2006HH and all indications I have seen say that SA2008HH is no better. DeLorme couldn't even get it right with the PN-20.
That said - if you need topographic maps on a PDA, DeLorme is the way to go. I use TomTom for driving, and once SA2008HH gets fixed for the Kaiser I will be upgrading to 2008HH from 2006HH (which worked well with an external BT GPS on my Hermes.) for topo capability.

I have an old (2002) version of Delorme Xmap for pocket PC.
I just loaded it up today on my tilt, I already had prepared maps for the Northwest USA so I added those.
The program started up, I changed the settings to look at port 4 and since I had started my GPS with GPSTest it found the device and located my position very quickly.
Here is the reason I am posting:
I see they have version 2009 out now and it looks pretty good.
However if it causes lockups on the Kaiser then I should not buy it.
Still - for $40 it seems you get a lot.

I have the 2005 version with both streets and topo maps, it ran just fine on my Hermes (AT&T 8525) with a bluetooth GPS receiver but would never run right on my Kaiser (AT&T TILT). Being an avid outsdoorsman I miss my topo maps but, have found an alturnative, freeware called TGPS, it takes a little more work to setup and install maps but it works great.

I have version 2009 -- it works perfectly fine on the kaiser

Is it also fast? Or sluggish?

resonably fast -- except when you first zoom out to level 5 or higher. It can take a while to render the map at that level -- then its fast enough for the rest of the session.
It depends on how much info you've saved in the maps, though.
I tree to keep maps exported to the Kaiser about 1 to 2 MB in size, though I do have a 14MB map of much of the Western US, levels 5 to 9 or so, that has decent performance

Question About GPS Software

Hi guys, i have a question about looking for some GPS software that would i guess keep track of how many miles i travel, i ride a bike everyday to work and just want to keep track of how many miles i travel anywhere. is there a software that any of you guys know about. thanks

easyTrip does that, but you need Tom Tom.
And of course Track Me if that does what you want.

i think gps tuner can do that...i think..dont quote me 100%

GPSTuner can do that, but it's not free. It registers your track and gives you information on the total length, maximum/minimum/average speed, maximum/minimum altitude, percentage of track climbing and descending...
Also you can load a JPG of a map and navigate to any place, no just roads.
I use Tomtom for road/street navigation and GPStuner for off-road or loading custom POIs and find which ones are near. (and navizon to get some money back from this device, I expect it to pay for itself in a few months)

I was looking for the same thing, and found RunGPS - www.rungps.net
Again, it's not free, but there is a 14 day trial so you can at least test it and see if it does everything you want it to before paying anything. It also includes uploading of "training" or anything you've recorded to www.gps-sport.net which will keep track of everything you do and I find is very useful.
I do cycling events with my local road race club, and if you set up routes on the gps-sport website you can compete against other people who use the same route, which is quite cool. You can also compete against yourself, which might be good if you're riding the same routes every day?
I'm just waiting for my MDA Vario III to get back from being repaired, and this will be the first thing I put back on it!

how about LEM's TrackMe. It's free and a lot of fun. You can find it also in the Kaiser general thread. It stores the trips on LEM's server or your own (need PHP server), so you have historical data and you have a lot more with this app.

i like TomTom 7...i used iGo8, but its not so great, it just looks great...i am in LA, where there are plenty of buildings, but there arent any buildings for igo 8 so its kinda pointless

I currently have tt7, navigon, igo8, and garmin 2009...I like igo8 the best, really just because of the cool maps...but without a TCM device, I went with Garmin for the free traffic over gprs...
It is good, I used tt6 forever, and tt7 is mostly the same with some impovements, it has a really simple UI, but also has limited features (i.e. no over trip stats, traffic requires subscription, etc)...so i only have been using Garmin for about a week, i will see how it goes...

errrr all of them and a few more depending on what I am doing and where I am going.
EG: If I am running an off road route in my 4x4 TomTom is niether use nor ornament as it's simply all green on the map. So I use MemoryMap.

does garmin lag for you ? like in cities it is off by maybe half a block, be super slow on turns ( so slow that you miss the next turn if it is close by) and on highways it might lag out for 10 seconds before getting back on route ?
if not please let me know what rom you are using and what version of garmin.

No, not noticeably...
I say this with a condition however; TT7 does seem the smoothest (rerouting, staying consistant, etc) however, it is slight. I noticed the iGO8 actually tends to have more laginess than the others; surely, because of the great maps and user interface. Yet, again it is slight at most, nothing too bad. I have used them both on Leos Roms (V_9), and on ROMeOS v4...As far as the Garmin version, I installed the 2009 Version, it loaded something like v. 40010w.exe; however, you can update this from the Garmin site to version 42050w.exe; they claim many improvements from the first file i have listed until the last. If you do update, I found the easiest way to accomplish this is by first installing the older version, connecting through WMDC, then updating the software that way...Good Luck...

This moment I have Navigon: it does exactly what it supposed to do, easy to use. Great forum for tricks and tips, only German. Befor Navigon I had TomTom but I refuse to buy a new product of them. (I bought a new release and within a month they simply told the pda wasn't supported anymore so I had nothing exept a empty pocket.No discussion possible.)

TTN7 FTW; the best by far IMO.

Garmin has a wonderful interface - very easy to use, finger-friendly, and functional. It also consistently locks onto a GPS signal in less than 20 seconds.
The only other app. I've used is iGuidance, which had plenty of issues:
Slow GPS lock
Clunky interface
Sluggish performance

Wait lol...Deffinetly the guy who said Nav4all is a good gps app is smokin crack...that gps app was the first gps prog I ever used ..and it was only cuz it was free and I didn't know diddly about TomTOM and that people had actually extracted it and posted it on xda..and first things first... Nav4all is like a cheap european hooker version of a gps application. The people who made that thing really must not of liked themselves..its a kmart version o what gps software should be..I never used an app that lacked everything gps software is supposed to have..it was bare bone..it could only locate maybe half of a satelite and had no turn by turn..no poi..nothing.........
But anywayz TomTom7 is by far the best and user friendly gps software out there..and u guys that are still using TT6...geezus just upgrade to TT7...why wouldn't u? such a better upgrade believe me. And for the people who don't like how the map colors look..just PAY for the more expensve colored maps and search around ull find something u like..I mean I hear that IGO and Garmin are "pretty" looking gps maps and all , but their defintely not as user friendly, as detailed and as easy to use...and im 100% sure theres nothing out their as precise and as accurate as TT7. TOMTOM7 has no lag whatso ever...and the estimated arrival time and when u actually get too the location are accurate to a T!. I mean it can't get any bettter...so until I see other gps software becoming as accurate as TOMTOM, I doubt a lot of us will be switching gps software anytime soon, just look at this simple forum poll...I mean iphone users are dying for TT to be available for the iphone..which I doubt It will be, those flunks are stuck with piss on me googlemaps Lol....

GEO Caching with a Kaiser

Guys,
Anyone got a good solution for GEO Caching with my Kaiser? I would really like to leave my other GPS home and still head for some caching sites for some afternoon or weekend adventure. Any thoughts?

Geoscout kicks butt, by FAR the best one out there. I'm very impressed by the fact that it syncs (Live) with Geocaching.com, if you post a log in the field, it's updated instantly on the web site.. Very cool...

Geoscout is seconded as the most popular solution, but there are other polished solutions also.

Only problem is the Kaisers GPS isn't that good so you might have some issues with that.

I found zero Geocaching software for Windows Mobile that was worth using for the actual navigation/finding, period... Even bypassing the built-in GPS for all its fault and using my bluetooth GPS unit, none...
GeoScout is good for on-the-go data, but not the caching itself... BeeLineGPS seemed okay, but its radar screen and some other things are just.... wacky.
If nothing else, I'd say try BeeLineGPS..
My solution? I went back to using what I used on Palm, which works perfect, consistent, and I already had a very solid solution set up for getting the data files set up and ready for me to update at an time.. GeoNiche. I run it in StyleTap, and it works great.
Big problem is that GeoNiche + Styletap would run around $75. I already owned GeoNiche, and had some other stuff I also owned from Palm apps, so Styletap made a lot of sense for me.
Good luck with anything else.. I really gave BeeLine a good try, and many others (Smache, GPStuner, GPXSonar, CacheMate, etc) and just hated the navigation on all of them and the data import/update facilities for most of them.
PathAway is one I kept, but I am using it the same way I did on the Palm, and that is for hiking and marking POIs related to that. I considered trying to use it for Geocaching but it never suited me in that role on the Palm so I didn't give it another try for it.

I've been using Backcountry Navigator. I like that it allows me to download topo maps from within the program.
But I agree with austinsync, the GPS doesn't seem very good. It seems to be about 20-30 feet off from my Garmin unit, and is slow to update. It's good for finding where you are when hiking or boating, but not really good enough for Geocaching.

I second Beeline. I only wish it had maps.
As for the accuracy, I suggest trying different Radio Roms. My current Radio (1.58.25.17) works best for me. I'm usually within 5 ft of my friends Garmin. Other radios, I've been off as much as 60ft.

Thanks for all the posts guys. I looked at GEOScout which is working quite well, but holy crap $40 Ouch! I'm going for Beeline next and then Backcountry navigator.
I am completely fine with the accuracy of the GPS as I prefer a challenge when caching anyway. I have also seen the radio set make a huge difference in how far off it is. I am currently using NEON 1.65.24.35 radio and is seams VERY close to my buddies Garmin (he's pissed cuz he bought a very expensive Garmin that made my Kaiser look cheap ).
Keep them coming, I want to find as many as possible so I can find the one that works best for what I'm doing. You guys are awesome for not giving me the usual "google it answer", That's awesome!

My setup:
CacheMate (http://www.smittyware.com/ppc/cachemate/) to store information about the caches and to pinpoint the exact location of a cache. I usually build a pocket query and import the GPX file into CacheMate. When out cache-hunting I start off using Garmin (see below) and when I'm close to the cache I switch to CacheMate's compass window which tells me the distance and direction to the cache.
Garmin Mobile XT to locate the cache on a map. I've loaded Garmin with a map made for outoor life (i.e. not driving) that shows elevation, paths, swamps etc. What makes Garmin great for geocaching is that with a browser plugin you can send the location of a cache from geocaching.com directly to your Kaiser via the ActiveSync connection.

I had success caching with Tracky http://www.trackthisout.com/. It allows searches of nearby caches, you can download full page descriptions, and uses google maps. I found the GPS to be accurate enough. Sometime having an areal view can really help find the cache (Oh...THAT tree!). It takes a while to get used to, but once you have got it it does work really well.
It has been a bit buggy lately, but support is good. There is a free trial.

Thinking about upgrading to a tilt, but questions

Im sure this will be easy for you guys. I have a 8125 now with live search on it. My question is if I upgrade to the tilt, is there a way I can use the gps without being charged? I would really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance

a gps don't use the phone it get signals from satellites
so it don't cost anything
but of cause if you use gmaps for navigation it will cost
but if you use tomtom or garmin program and maps you
don't even need a sim card in the phone

I use Google Maps...if you pay your provider for internet access (like PDA Connect or MediaNet Unlimited...search on those if you don't know the truth!) then it won't cost you anything more.
There is a clause in the Google Maps program that says not to use it while moving, and I'm still unclear myself as to the exact reasons why, so at least be aware when you are doing something you're 'not supposed to' do...but it works just fine, is EASY to use, has broad general search capabilities, incorporates their Satellite View and practically real-time Traffic info.
If you do NOT pay for internet access (although I strongly suggest taking advantage of the 3G on the Tilt) you can use a 3rd party app like TomTom, Garmin and many others.
I also have DeLorme's Street Atlas 2007, but it does not support the GPS built into the Tilt, I have an external BT GPS for that.
The latest version of Street Atlas has...I believe...addressed that issue and should work fine.
And there are a TON of other GPS programs out there that have many subtle differences to suit whatever your needs are...search the Kaiser > Software Forum and you'll find people who love and hate almost every one of them available. Installing most of them on the SD is more efficient, but some are small enough to put in without one.
The Tilt also has Quick GPS that, when updated regularly, speeds up the satellite acquisition time for the GPS effectively...I usually get a lock within 10-15 seconds, but it does take longer on occasion. Quick GPS downloads info from the Net, so you would need access to utilize that function.
I too had a Wizard before the Tilt...and I liked it alot...but the 3G, the GPS, the 3MP Camera...and THIS FORUM!...have taken me to a point where I LOVE my Tilt, and...although I can 'upgrade' now to a Fuze...I don't think I can get a better phone without going outside my Provider Dealer (AT&T thru Hawk Electronics).
Search the Kaiser Forum for GPS, look specifically in the Software section and I think you'll find more than enough info to help you make your decision.
If you do make the switch, I'd keep the Wizard and start playing with Cooked ROMs and Software so you can get acquainted with the process. What you can do with the Tilt on this Forum is only limited by the time these guys have to tweak.
For what it may or may not be worth, my opinion is...get the Tilt!
