Hi all,
I'm due for and upgrade soon and I was wondering what you think of your operator. Prices / Customer service and support / Network coverage etc.
EDIT-My original reason for this thread is below. I took the risk of going with Orange today and got a Trinity
I'm considering a Trinity (only on Orange atm) or a Hermes (on o2, T-Mobile and Vodafone)
I prefer to look of the Trinity (bigger storage card, size, cheaper and GPS) but I view Orange as a bad point, but the Hermes has more support and roms here and is available with my current operator - o2, who I plan to bribe with 'give a free phone and a better contract, or I'll go to t-mobile or vodafone.' Anyone had any luck doing that?
reliability- vodafone
best deals - t-mobile
t-mobile wins
Do you know if any of the UK providers offer unlimited internet connection (without the stupid 'fair use' policy)? I mean, really unlimited like usual broadband?

How much are you planning on using? I find it hard to get anywhere close to the 1GB fair use "limit" on standard Web n Walk.
Unless you plan on doing a lot of streaming video, in which case you should get the Web n Walk pro which has a 10Gb ceiling, you will find it hard to download a lot on a pocket pc.
bbobeckyj, I tried the same 'bribe' but it got me nowhere. I have always been on O2, but might have to switch to Vodafone because they have much better contracts that suit my needs for my XDA Mini S. Vodafon are bringing out a new internet extra as well soon, so I'm going to wait until then.
Well guys and gals I successfully ported across to t-mobile from O2....the data charges are just scandalous on O2.
Web-n-walk and U-Fix 25....nice
HSDPA activated already according to the woman at t-mobile and i can verify it was....just watched the latest BBC News feed without a hitch!.
NICE

I was thinking of using skype a lot actually. For that, I think definitely 1 GB limit will be crossed fairly easily. But for that also need a fast connection. Will look into all this when about to get new contract near end August.
Midget1990: I didn't know that usual broadband is also capped! I have NTL and I download easily something like 20 to 40 gigs a month, which sometimes increases and sometimes decreases... So far never faced any caps, and got this connection just for that fact that it was 'really' unlimited, even if the speed was just 2 Mbps.
Just so you know, t-mobiles usage policy doesnt allow skype...you have to use the web-n-walk pro for that.

Thanks for that!!!
You just potentially saved me spending a lot over nothing.
Now all that's left is to find someone who does allow unlimited usage and VOIP. I think I'm living in dreamworld
I don't really want to pay loads for a contract, but it looks like the cheapest t-mobile do is about £30 . Which would you say is better out of web n walk and flext?
EDIT: Just looked at flext 20 and it looks perfect for me. (Mobile internet (t-zones, WAP or web'n'walk) charges
Browsing costs 0.73p per KB, a maximum charge of £1 per day no matter how much you browse the internet on your mobile phone.)
Please could somebody say though, where would the £1 for the internet come from, because the £34 you get to spend a month just says that you use it on calls and texts. Does it come from somewhere else? (Never been on a contract before)
Well all i can say is im using flext 25 with web-n-walk 18.....that works out at 32.50 a month..........unlimited internet (obviously fair use...but a gig is MASSIVE for a pda)
the flext thing has 60 quid of allowance, works out at (if you go half for text and half for calls)
300 texts
150 minutes (anytime,anywhere(uk) )
plus free weekend calls to ANY uk number (not including premium or 08 numbers)
Youd get much more out of the flext + web-n-walk 25, but i really wanted to pay the cheapest option. I hate it when they put a few quid in between, but boost the allowance by almost double.

Yer ive noticed that...but the free weekend calls must be worth a HELL of alot.....think thats a limited time offer aswell??
Which have you looked at then?
I was gonna go with flext 20 + web-n-walk.
I can't see when the offer ends, I can't actually start the contract now so was going to in a month or so.

WnW MAX allows skype, its basicly everything like home Broadband but with 10gb fair usage, you can go over but if you go over say 3months in a row they may contact you and ask you to reduce it, allthou 10gb for a PDA is a hell of a lot, unless you plan on using it as a modem a lot of the time 10gb should do.
if you will be using it as a modem all the time then the t-mobile usb modem might be a better option as that allows unlimtied internet - http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/personal/.../internet-on-the-move/internet-on-your-laptop
Regards
I wish that t-mobile did a cheaper flext and web-n-walk. I only really want to spend £20 a month.
Orange - best customer service, talk 7 data plans ok, do the Trinity on very good deals if you shop around
T mobile - plans excellent if you want flexibility or if you download a lot.
O2 - customerservice absolute ****, plans ok, once the best range of PDA's - now limited
Vodafone - havnt a clue
Really depends on deal your offered. Orange clinched it for me at last upgrade - 7 months free line rental and a free trinity with GPS on a 12 month contract.
One thing to note about t-mobile wnw.
They are blocking IRC/MSN etc... over GPRS, some users have reported those apps are working correctly however recently signed up customers seem to have ports blocked??
Id be interested to know if anyone can use IRC over wnw....if so what GPRS settings are you using?

Short answer - no. I've been with Genie and then O2 for many years, and the one thing that's happened in that time is handset and contracts have become more expensive. I rang up a while ago to try and get a new XDA, and they wanted to put me on a £35+ contract and I would still have to pay something for a (decent) phone.
What O2 are good at (for me at least) is giving you dirt cheap contracts. For instance I got a 1 year contract of £20 a month reduced to £10 a month, then £100 cash back for not taking a phone. So I'm paying £20 for a whole year for Online Offpeak 300 (or whatever the hell it is). Even the O2 rep suggested I just get an XDA off Ebay.
Hey guys,
I'm looking around for a PDA, I've never really had one before but I really like the sound of the Kaiser.
Does O2 (UK) have a Kaiser based product?
Many Thanks
I have read a couple of things which suggest that O2 don't intend to pick up the Kaiser. Not sure how accurate the source information is though.
I doubt it!
I've been hoping since I first saw the Kaiser that O2 would be picking it up to release this year, as my contract runs out in November so I was going to upgrade to it then...
But since they've only just released the TyTN as the XDA Trion in the last couple of months, and that phone has been with every other network for over a year, I doubt very much they'll replace their "flagship" phone I suppose with a new one inside 6 months :-(
Yeh, I think you are probably right myk_83.
I have to say I can't imagine going back ot O2 now anyway. I used to be with O2 and they were fine, a good company, but with phones like this I find the Tmobile Web'n'Walk incredible value for money.
Unlimited data (within reason ) for under a tenner a month, compared to the other networks per mb charging. It is no exaggeration to say that my data use would cost me a couple of hundred pounds per month on the other networks
Awww man!
Say it isn't so!
I've been with O2 for 18 months now - on just a regular phone - and I've been really impressed with them, I've no experience with there data services but I'd hate to have to switch networks.

Yeh, I never had any problems with O2, they were a good company. With these types of phones though, chances are you are going to want to download your emails, surf the net etc... and you will find that your data use creeps up faster than you realise.
I am not sure what O2 are currently charging but generally the other networks seem to charge around £3 to £4 (it used to be £7.50 per mb with most networks!!) per megabyte of data. I wouldn't consider myself a particularly heavy data user but I have used 40mb in a month before now which would cost me a fortune!
With Tmobile, it is just £7.50 per month ... big difference.
Aye,
E-mails and web connectivity are a large part of my needs.
I'm also looking at the possibility of developing custom apps to make me more productive (I'm a .Net developer by trade) and these apps would often rely on connectivity to the web.
I don't want to switch providers... but I'm starting to feel it may be inevitable.
Yeh, it may be the way to go. I haven't looked at O2's tarriffs though since I got my Vario 2 a year ago so perhaps they now offer a data plan, they didn't then but they might now. It's worth asking.
Only thing I would say about Tmobile is that in my area there is limited 3G coverage which means for the most part I am on the slower GPRS connection. This doesn't bother me at all but would bother some who use the video calling or need a faster connection. If you decide that it is time to try a new network, if you need 3G, check on the coverage for your area first.
... also, you can take your number to Tmobile if you need to, I did and it was nice and easy.
O2 Data
I think O2 include 1mb of browsing with their contract tariffs for free, and then they charge £3 for 2mb, or £5 for 4mb as bolt-ons. For me, that's not much of a problem, because pretty much everywhere that I'm not driving and can use my phone there's a wi-fi network I can access, so I very rarely use GPRS (can't use 3G at the minute cos I have a Wizard).
I can see this being pretty useless tho if you ever use GPRS or 3G internet, as I've noticed most pages loading about 150-200kb on average, so that's only gonna be about 10 sites with the 2mb package :-/ I guess it depends on what you use it for, and like I said, it probably wouldn't bother me, but it'd be nice to have 3G and be able to use it without paying a bundle!
There's not much chance of O2 selling the Kaiser tho, and although O2 in general have been pretty good to me for about 10 years, they don't seem overly fussed with PDA phones in general (they never did an AKU 3.x upgrade for the Mini S, and stuck at 2) and are slow to upgrade models, so I'm gonna check around when my contract's up and just try and move my number wherever I go.
Bit of a knee jerk reaction... but I think I'm already sold on T-mobile.
I just need to check coverage because I work in a few remote locations.
Crikey Mate!
I work in the sticks - but according to T-mobile's website there 3G coverage is at absolute maximum in my area plus very good @ home and the other sites I work...
Really do have no excuses now
I'm also on O2 and my contract is running out in December....T-mobile seems like a good bet IMO....what's the Kaiser named on T-Mobile?

I have no information on this at all, just an opinion. The Kaiser is a direct replacement for the Exec, which is 2 years old & can't be selling much now. There is a definite case for O2 to replace the Exec with what is essentially HTC's best ever product & one that would generate them considerable revenues especially data. If I was XDA product mgr at O2 I would be selling the Kaiser straight away.
The matter of data charges is somewhat irrelevant to O2's ability to market this product - anyone who use significant date on O2 should have one of their data tarrifs, mine is for 36Mb per month, I usually have a little left over each month & I leave my emails on all the time & I look at lots of web sites each day.
Either way, I really hope that O2 do market the Kaiser.
I thought that the Omni was going to be the successor of the Exec (Universal), while the Kaiser was the next gen Trion (Hermes).
I'm basing this guess entirely on looks, of course...
Also, I thought that O2 had just got some shiny new XDA device in, as well as their Cocoon. I can't see them getting another (better) device in to overshadow them.
I'm happy to jump ship to T-Mobile, as the O2 data rates are extortionate.

t-mobile suck ass for service tho!
my gf has so many problems with the customer services, network coverage etc etc
Well, my choice appears to be:
Stay with O2 and get no TyTN II (or get it SIM free, which is expensive)
Switch to Orange, Vodafone or T-Mobile and get it on contract.
My O2 contract runs out at the end of September.
Interesting...
according to the announcement today, the group that owns O2 will be getting it, so you may be in luck if you hold on with your current contract.
personally i'd move to tmo, they're pretty committed to developing all their 3G services
Expansys appear to be able to sell the Kaiser on O2 & Voda contracts, might be worth a call.

Gordon
Alrite, O2 users
let's see who else is in my position
My O2 contract is over
still with O2
being stupidly patient with them not even having a confirmed release date for their version of the kaiser or the rumored XDA Stellar
being so tempted to move to T-mobile
even been offered a fantastic deal
PLUS t-mobile is using HSDPA and have the best mobile browsing tarrif and service
only thing is,
the t-mobile version of the fone is UGLY
and also
im pray pray praying that O2 retentions would give me a better deal, AND maybe they would come out with a better looking version of the phone.... that way i can myself the hassle of moving my number around
all i can do now is wait
what do u guys think?
I switched to T-Mobile on a WNWplus tariff. When I phone O2 to cancel, they offered me £100 credit on my bill plus lower tariff than currently. But since they could not even tell me IF the Kaiser was coming out, I switched. Got my MDA Vario III in 48 hours and my number was ported in a week or so (until then I used call diverts to my temporary number).
I'm waiting. It's a work phone upgrade so I don't have a choice on the network.
I've just had to ask them to wait to do my upgrade
Thought i was the only one....
NO You are not alone!
I too have been waiting patiently, and ive gotten rather frustrated too, i called up o2 and have not been told when the phone is coming out or if it will even come out.
Im not sure if i should just go to expansys and get the phone from there. But then ive also been advised to wait since if o2 DO release the phone they might offer a better deal...
Im very happy you started this thread.. i thought i was the only one waiting..
btw, november 19th is the "latest" release that ive heard of..... (ive also heard dec/jan... i guess noone actually knows)
I just spoke to them and they said Nov to me as well
guys dont want and just switch to t-mobile.
Even if you get kaiser in o2 Data plan is rubbish - 200 or 300 megs only...
i know it sounds a lot but with tmobile unlimited data plan there is so much less to worry about.
after more than a year having wizard on o2 and now having kaiser on tmob i'm finally discovering what a pda is really for! email on the move, browsing internet whenever i wish to, listening to favourite internet radio on the way to uni and many more.
and hsdpa.. omg how fast it is... I'm lucky to be from Edinburgh where whole city is covered with Hsdpa range!

I switched from O2, since I figured December at the earliest for the XDA Stellar - they don't want to poison their precious iPhone launch, do they?
The T-Mobile phone is a thing of beauty. It's not the cool black look of my XDA Exec, but it's actually very nice. The pictures don't do it justice, IMO.
O2 retentions tried to fob me off with a crappy 200Mb for £7 deal. When I pointed out that T-Mob gave me 5 times as much, he simply assured me that based on my current usage (nil) I'd never go over that. He didn't have a comeback when I said the reason I didn't use their data at the moment was because it was horrifically expensive.
He did offer me about 50 minutes for £8 per year, but that was just to keep my number on their books, and I wanted to transfer it over, so I declined that one.
Also, O2 are downgrading their networks from 3G to EDGE so that the iPhone can get better-than-GPRS speeds. T-Mob are upgrading to HDSPA - it's even in Macclesfield! (well I was impressed )
Also, as mentioned, T-Mob give you 5x as much data per month as O2.
I switched.
Think about it.
I had a line with both I was tempted to wait till o2 got there act together but as I already used my orbit with my t-mobile chip, the choice was simple.
I wanted to see if o2 were going to get the device looking as good as the orbit, but I am glad I didn't wait as the device is so much better than I could have imagined.
The speeds are amazing in comparison, not worth the wait go with t-mobile imho.
Only benefit with possible o2 issue is the all black looks (like orbit) but by the time that comes out better options will already be on the horizon.
Why not get a Vodafone v1615 (Kaiser)? It has a beautiful shiny black back and looks really nice.
I got it for free because my bill this month was quite big
Today O2 announced that they are going to drop the 200mb FUP.
So unlimited will really mean unlimited.
I don't know if that only applies to iPhone customers (unlikely) or everyone.
Hi Just like to say i too am waiting , waiting waiting zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz for it on O2 UK as the T-Mobile service around my home and in London City is still appaling.
ive asked o2 if teh 200meg FUP is lifted for all users but have had no reply as yet.
The Register think it'll (at least to start with) be for iPhone customers only.
What does this mean? GPRS and EDGE only. So it's harder to download more, since you're getting it so much slower than HSDPA.
I get HSDPA on O2 now in London. They are rolling it out.
Strange thing is, I only get H on my phone when i am actually using the data.

I belive that is how it is meant to work.
My contract is up in a month so I am waiting to see what o2 do. My mate who is an asst manger in an o2 store told me Dec/jan
So will have to see
Kimbie
I didn't wait, and even forfeited a month of my contract. Apart from the lack of the XDA Stellar and 200Mb limit, I've also noticed O2 have deliberately invested in sponsorship deals such as The O2, as oposed to new technology. The iPhone is a prime example of their lack of commitment, as they have taken the 'easy' technology option.
I checked today and the O2 XDA Stellar (IE TyTn II) should be avaliable on the 27th of november. this is subject to the clearance of current stock of the XDA Trion (original TyTn).
also the 200mb limit isnt really invoked only if you use around 1GB will anything be checked as the codes to add this to the system show a 1024mb limit in place on the £7.50 bolton
Oh well got a Vario 3 now on TMob
Kimbie
I got mine as an O2 upgrade a month ago from here and it's the original HTC phone, much better than the crap O2 will probably roll out themselves
http://www.theorder.co.uk/o2/upgrades/deals/HTC/TyTN II/O2-Upgrade
I rang 10 days ago to get a PAC code to transfer to my Orange Tytn II. They offered me the Stellar on November 19th for free with unlimited data for £7.50 a month with 500 mins and 500 texts on a 12 month contract for £25pm
The Orange Tytn II is going back tomorrow as the reception is awful where I live and work, which in turn is killing the battery.
I'm hoping the rollout hasn't been pushed back.
hi there?
they're giving out offers for the stellar ALREADY?!
that's not fair
i called them 2 days ago for my pac code and the best they can do to make me stay is saying to me "well, it's up to you..."
who did u call? o2 retentions or xda
did they promise they will have it delivered by the 19th?
and... how the heck duz the stellar look like?
hummmmm
Hi All!!
My current mobile phone is coming to the end of its contract next month so I started to look round at the alternatives.
I came across the tytn 2 and the more I read about it the more I wanted it. Then I came across this forum and now I can't wait to get it (how sad is that, I'm acting like a kid and I'm 47!!).
I do have a question though and that is how easy it was to upgrade it to windows mobile 6.1 because I think it comes with 6???
Apologies if this is a bit off topic but I wondered if anyone out there in the UK has been offered a better deal than me on the Tytn by Orange.
My deal...
On a £30 per month/18 month tariff with money knocked off for handing in an old phone (£50) it comes to £24.44 per month.
For this I get 100 mins per month and unlimited texts
And finally the Tytn 2 itself will cost me £80 and they're throwing in a free but cheap bluetooth headset.
Sorry to go on a bit and again I hope asking about my deal isn't off topic...
I'd do it if i were you. Tytn II is a good friend in your pocket.
But with 100 Callminutes.. bit to low though.
I say: Do it!
Thanks ElProempie
All comments keenly received (the more the better!)
I am on orange and was going to leave them this month, i got the folowing for £40 a month, I am in band 4 of 5 some months my bill used to be a couple of hundred..
1800 mins,
500 texts,
a bolt on that can be unlimited texts, orange calls or land line calls.
250MB web usage
a free tytn 2
I accepted
Hi Sorted69
Thanks for the info, I'm nowhere near you for usage and I've got to keep the monthly cost to £25 at the most.............keep em coming though!!
Forgive me for being a noob world traveler...
Are cell phone plans really that expensive in Europe? I pay $40USD for 450 minutes per month and my unused minutes build up to prevent overage charges. I also have unlimited Data/SMS/MMS for $40USD.
I pay ~$70/mo with taxes once my corporate discount is taken from the normal figures above.
Can't help with the costs, but it's really easy to upgrade the TyTN II. Just use Olipro's unlocker (stick'ed in the Kaiser ROM forum) to install hardSPL, and to SIM and CID unlock it. Just pick a ROM and follow the (easy) instructions. Job done!
(btw, my phone was originally an Orange TyTN II)

so your getting 450 mins unlimited texts and net access for the equivelent of £35 a month INCLUDING your discounts.
And your saying the UK is expensive?!
1800 mins,
500 texts,

250MB web usage

I get that for the equivelent of $80 a month.
I currently pay £27.50 ($54) per month for 75 minutes of calls, 100 texts, and 120mb of data, on a 12 month contract. Since the plan's perfectly suited to my needs, I rarely if ever exceed any of this, so $54 is exactly what I pay each month. Signing up to this, the Tytn II cost me just £50 ($99) last October.
I can upgrade again come August (60 days before the contract ends), not sure what they'll offer me...
Thanks again guys, it's interesting to see what other people are paying!
synet when you say just pick a ROM.........where from???
And do these ROM's have mobile 6.1 on them??
Thanks

Familyguy, best to read the wiki, linked in the above post.
BTW, I'm new to this too. I've only had mine for 2 or 3 weeks, so don't ask me for advice
As to costs, mine gets paid for by my company
This has turned in to a "I pay less than you do" thread.
@ OP
Who cares what who pays. I live by the rule that if I am willing to pay the price that someone is asking, then it is not too much. It all depends on what you are willing to pay. As to 6.1 roms, there is a plethora of cooked 6.1 roms to choose from, from loaded to light. The choice is yours. You don't need anyones advice on whether or not to "Do It" or not. Some would say no due to driver issues and others would say "Go For It". As for driver issues, I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I dont use my phone for serious multimedia. Thats what my laptop is for. I say if you don't think the price is to high or to good to be true then "Go For It". Do what you want and don't let anyone influence your decision. However, all that being said, if and when you purchase it and then decide you made the wrong decision, everything you need to tweak the **** out of it is located in this forum. I really didn't like my Tilt after I first got it, but now I love it. I can change the damn thing daily. It's like getting a new phone every day.

Definitely worth shopping around - although note that Vodafone call their version of the Tytn II (aka Kaiser) a "Vodafone V1615", and for O2 it's the "O2 XDA Stellar". Both the same thing, slightly different roms and paint jobs, that's all.
My V1615 came sim unlocked (so I can potentially use it on any network), and I've since used the tools on this forum to flash it to the generic HTC rom, so it is to all intents and purposes a generic HTC Tytn II now
Thanks again guys, I had a look at the link above but didn't notice any 6.1 roms......I'll have a further search though, it's probably me not looking hard enough (wife always finds things but I can look directly at something without seeing it!!)
Trouble with O2 and voda is that they don't do a pink viewty which the wife wants at the same time, plus if we get 2 phones at the same time orange will offer us 1000 free orange to orange minutes per month!!
Seems like I might have a good deal then

so your getting 450 mins unlimited texts and net access for the equivelent of £35 a month INCLUDING your discounts.
And your saying the UK is expensive?!
1800 mins,
500 texts,
a bolt on that can be unlimited texts, orange calls or land line calls.
250MB web usage
a free tytn 2
I get that for the equivelent of $80 a month.

Well you all seem to get good phones cheaper then us. The cheapest I've seen the Tilt here was $149 with a 24 month contract. All we get for free here is a *insert random featureless phone model here*.
You obviously have a good monthly plan. However, unless my currency translator (ie my brain) is malfunctioning, you seem to be getting a better deal then the OP.

Most of the roms being released in the rom development forum are 6.1.
Thanks P1Tater.........it does make sense.........I totally forgot there were other forums in this section..........DOH!!
I lost my T-Mobile Kaiser a couple of weeks ago and am using my lovely Universal at the moment but I need to get something smaller.
What's the best value on the market at the moment?
It has to be unlocked because I have 12 months left on my flex web and walk!
The Kaiser is around £470 unlocked which I can't afford
I want
Good battery life
3G
HSDPA
Bluetooth
GPS
Wifi
WM 6
Mobile Office
Smallish
Lightweight
Camera (but this is low priority)
Yes I know I want it all but hey!
I have looked at the Asus P750 as the best fit so far and it seems to have good reviews.
HP 614, read about that too, but it said it had a poor feel to it (build quality)
Also read about the MWg Atom V
Any thoughts?
I am guessing you are in the UK. You might want to consider whether your household contents insurance covers you for loss of personal property (mine doesn't, my parents does). Guess you'll have to weigh it up between new phone and excess/no-claims loss.
Otherwise, you *might* want to consider buying a Hermes/Trion/Vario 2 second hand. These are not entirely dissimilar to the Kaiser and go for £100 to £150 on ebay, but they do not have GPS built in, so you'd have to buy an external device. For comparison, last I saw Kaisers were going for over £300 on ebay.
Hope that helps.
Surely insurance or warranty will cover a lost phone?
Funny you should ask this, cos a few days ago THIS THREAD was posted about a guy who'd basically found/stole a Kaiser, could it be....?
kaiser
im selling mine, im the uk, im looking for around half that price - around 260.
