I just bought a new AT&T Tilt. I wanted it mainly for GPS and Outlook Calendar usage, and as such, I didn't buy a data plan with it. Is it possible/necessary to disable the data connection so I don't rack up huge data bills? Will turning off the data modem improve my battery life? How much?
I plan on using TomTom, not the Telenav, which connects to the net.
Also, does that cool HTC Homescreen automatically connect to the internet to fetch weather? Is there a way to turn that feature off and still have the cool clock and app launcher?

You can adjust/delete your data connection settings by going here ...
Start -> Settings -> Connections -> "Connections" Tab -> "Advanced" Tab -> choose "Select Networks" and adjust/delete accordingly
If you don't set up a city for the Weather tab, it won't try connecting to anything. But if you followed the initial instructions to remove or disable the data settings, that won't matter much.

Hello all, newbie sorry if posted in wrong place?!
i have noticed intermittantly my tytn2 has a habit of connectiong to a data connection for no reason? weather updates are on manual and all other apps i am aware off are not initiating a connection; well un known to me anyway?
is there an app to show you applications that are trying to make a data connection?
could i have something melicious on there like a virus?
is the an app to show you upload and download traffic? l
You need spb GRPS counter and set it to monitor your GPRS connection.
Doubt it's a virus...
Mine has done that from time to time but didn't use any data, just connected.
Maybe your Activesync is connected to recive push email?
thanks everyone, i checked the active sync thats all ok, it does not just connect gprs it connects on 3g or hsdpa will the gprs monitor check them connections too?

Yes it will, but i think that GPRS monitor will show only the data connection packets, not the program which is running the internet...

Hi all, I have been using mssmison's Eclair build on my vogue for the past two months, and have run up 100mb+ data useage, where on winmo I was only using 10-12mb.
I have activesync, calendar, and contacts for exchange sync turned on, as this is my work phone and I require these.
I also had google gmail account registered, but set to not sync anything.
No additional applications were installed over the base build. No web browsing or tethering etc, no web or GPS useage - phone has been used exclusively for email/calendar/contacts/phone calls.
Is there any way of finding out where the data useage is leaking? Does android phone home? Is the exchange sync not working very well, and resending/resyncing lots of data? (this is my suspicion based on exchange sync performance).
I've had to switch back to winmo due to the restrictive data plan I'm on for work, which is very frustrating.
Has anyone with the exchange stuff configured experienced a similar jump in data useage?

I would recommend a few things:
-Turn off data via the modem app when you're not using it (which you probably don't want to do since you constantly need exchange available I assume).
-Search the market for a data monitoring app for a better insight on what's using your data.
-Go into Settings>Security and Location. Uncheck the "Use wireless networks" and "Share with Google" boxes. I believe this can cause some extra data usage.
-Turn off Background Data and/or Auto Sync in the settings as well. Once again, you may not want to do this if you want exchange available constantly, but you could try just manually syncing/sending/downloading when necessary to minimize excess data usage.
Hope some of this can help! Good luck.
Hi
I'm on a limited data plan (50MB), so when I'm connected on Edge/3G (or even when on WiFi), I want auto-sync to work on Gmail only for push mail, and maybe to run IM (eBuddy) on the background.
Is there a trick/apps to do it?
As it is now, even when I don't do anything on my N1, just by leaving it on standby eats about 1MB in less than an hour.
thanks in advance
That's an insane data plan, is there no way you can get any more allowance?
Go to Account & Sync Settings and only choose to sync gmail? I don't really get the question, I assume you have already checked out the options?
edit:
Oh and if it's eating 1MB/hour on standby you've clearly got an app that is sending/recieving loads of data and you should remove it.

Yup, I guess my question leads to how do I identify which applications? Is there any apps that allow me to block traffic for these apps which silently eat my data?
I came across DroidWall, but doesn't seem to work on Froyo, anyone know other alternative?
I noticed that within 15 seconds my phone used nearly 2MB of data. I was watching data go up in 3G Watchdog. I didn't have any apps open (other than background apps such as Google Talk, Gmail, the basics).
So I downloaded Network Counter to see which app was using the data. It turns out that it's the Dialer, Android System, and Settings that use significantly more data. That doesn't make sense to me. Any idea why these apps (which I thought didn't use data) use so much more than apps such as Gmail or Google Talk?

Would depend on how often you have your phone synching with google and how many services you sync. I use 10-16 GB of data per month but still have the old unl plan. I also sync 3 google accounts, facebook and twitter as well as doing 90% of my internet usage though my phone. But I know I'm in the minority as well.

Probably there are some apps on ur phone that are set to get updated automatically to newer versions.
Go to ur market app, and uncheck the "allow automatic update" from all of the google/android base apps. If u leave them checked, they would update when they detect a newer version.
u can get the list of all ur apps by clicking the 'my apps' link in market app. u would need to deselect it individually for all the apps.
I don't have anything set to auto update. That's why I am so confused by this. I guess it's not a big deal cause I use wifi a lot, but it would be nice to know why these things are using data.

Hi there, I'm still fairly new to Android and i have hopefully a simple question.
Till so far I have used the gmail app without a problem and due to my unlimited data plan I don't care for pulling the email from the web. But soon ill go on a vacation and i want to save a couple if not all my emails on my phone with attachments. And I don't know if that is possible with the gmail app.
If your asking how to save your current e-mails(with photos) but not be charged for data while roaming than you
click the check mark beside the e-mail
and at the bottom 3 options should pop up (archive, delete, labels)
click archive.
to view the email search your inbox for the title of the e-mail or who it was from.
If your asking how to stop photo's from downloading because your roaming then.
Gmail has the option "show pictures" (which downloads the pictures)
just do not click that and the picture wont download.
If you dont want to use data while on vacation then
go to your Home screen
click the options button
then settings
then wireless & networks
make sure "Mobile Network" is UN-checked
then your phone wont use any data (unless on wi-fi)
