Kaiser USB Transfer Rate

I simply love the tilt and have wasted countless hours messing with software and settings. I bought a fancy 8gb card for it but It transfers so wicked slow! For me to transfer 165mb file (Futurama Episode 1) it takes like 10 min. I have USB 2.0 and I am using Microsoft Active Sync on Windows XP. Anyway of speeding things up? This feels so much like USB 1.1 again!

Yeah the kaiser IS slow on doing it that way, You need that card usb adapter it (might have) came with. Its around 10x faster and much easier to transfer big files over.

You can try software like Softick Card Export (there's a freeware one but I can't recall the name atm) and it will speed up transfers a bit, since it turns the kaiser on an usb flash drive, speed still won't be as you would wish.
Ideally, would be to get a card reader to pass stuff, saves lots of headaches

Speed of SD slot?

I am upgrading from XDA Exec to the Vario III and I was going to buy a memory card at the same time. Does anybody know which class the SD slot is? I am hoping it is nice and fast and supports the ultr high speed cards.

I have a cheap card that I got with the phone and a more expensive one (Sandisk UltraII)
Personally, with the Kaiser, I can't tell any difference between the two. Not when transferring files to/from my computer and not when using the actual device.
However if I compare the two cards in my cardreader on my computer there is a world of difference. (The UltraII being roughly 6 times as fast as the generic one I got with the phone.)
I don't know if it's just my phone or ROM but to me it doesn't seem as if the Kaiser can actually utilize the extra speed at all.
Of course, the Kaiser having an utterly slow USB connection doesn't really help either so maybe there is a difference when it comes to usage on the actual device. If so I just haven't noticed yet as the only transfer heavy stuff I do if pushing files to and from my computer which (I guess) might be hempered by the USB connection.

I'm using Kingston microSDHC class 4 card and in phone it is just so slow as generic ones, but in USB reader it's fast like hell

Softick Card Export

Is there any alternative for softick card export. WM5 storage don't seem to work on the kaiser.

Install trail version of Softick and then install WM5 1.8

Install trail version of Softick and then install WM5 1.8. USe Softtick once and then start using wm5storage. this is been working with my tilt. even after softtick expired.

I tried WM5torage and wasn't able to get it to work with my ROM. My understanding is that it will work IF you have the drivers to support the usb drive connection already, since WM5storage doesn't have them... so it really depends on your OS. I purchased a Softick license and I must say that it works perfectly. The difference is that Softick comes with the usb drivers.
My guess is that by installing the Softick trial, WM5torage can access the softick drivers.

Card Export II is well worth the small price. And I find the interface better than the WM5storage.

using softkick, is it normal for it to take 1 hour to transfer a 1.7gig file onto a 6gig sandisk card inside my tytn ii?

Mine wasn't quite that long. I just moved 1.26GB of music file and it took about 26 minutes.

Softick doesn't advertise the transfer rate of Cardexport II.
USB Full Speed (1.1) ~1.5MB/S => 1.7GB file would take about 19mins theoretically.
USB High Speed (2.0) ~60MB/S => 1.7GB file would take about 30secs.
You rarely see these theoretical speeds because of so many variables to both computers as to how fast they read and/or write. I'd say your "real" speeds suggest something close to a slow USB 1.1 connection

Vista was telling me it was going at 444kb/sec and about 54 minutes to transfer all of it (accordign to vista, but that doesn't really mean much)
I mean, normally it would have taken 2-3 hours if i wasnt using this little app.
Cool idea, just not worth the money to spend on I guess if i could just take 3 seconds to pop out sd card and put it into reader/usb port.

Thats one of the selling factors for me. I don't have to carry or have access to a card reader when I'm away from the house. I can take it to work, friends houses and on vacation and be able to transfer files without the card reader. Most computers don't have card readers but about every computer now has a USB port you can plug into. Then it gets even more complicated with microSDHC as most existing card readers can't read them so then you'd be forced to carry a reader with you.

I got it to work for a few days, but suddently this app just keeps disconnecting and switch back to activesync. I have tried plenty of way of connecting it in Card-Export, but it just keeps switching back to activesync. Very sad. Can some gurus here pls share if you have similiar experience? thnks

Insanely Slow Data Transfer over USB

hey guys,
ever since i got my tilt, data transfer over USB has been painfully slow. for example, a 900 mb tomtom map took over 2 hours to transfer. I tried taking the SD card out and putting it into my laptop. everything transferred in less than a minute, but as soon as i put the SD card back into my tilt, it turned out it was corrupted. i tried searching for a solution to this issue, but couldn't find anything.

you say ever since you got your tilt does that mean that you had other and faster transfers on other pda's because in my exp thats the case with all wm devices

no, this is my first WM phone, and first PDA ever (i had an i870 before)

activesync is slow period, i use a mediacard reader,i highly recommend a storage card and is SDHC and a compatible card reader for your laptop/desktop,can also find cards on ebay with usb readers instead of card readers so you can just plug the card into the usb stick and away you go

unfortunately that's how the USB plug works on these phones. It's USB 1.1 only.

it's not just a usb1.1 issue as usb1.1 should be able to do 12MB/sec which is far from what happens in reallife

To give you an idea, I just did a quick and dirty test of the different transfer times.
RAR: 41.7 MB
Using Activesync:
- Copy to internal memory => 01:05
- Copy to SD Card => 01:20
Using Card Export:
- Copy to SD Card => 00:51 (mean transfer rate: 850 KB/sec)
Using USB Card Reader =>
- Copy to SD Card => 00:04 (mean transfer rate: 12500 KB/sec)
Conclusion: Always use an external card reader for transfering (large) files.

Tytn II has usb 2. Why the speed is so lame then?

The Kaiser is my first device, so I don't have any other devices to compare to. But in a large degree I have noticed the same for other mobile devices (like cameras, mp3-players,...)
It has to do with some factors:
- What app is used to transfer the data?
Working through Activesync to transfer data clearly works slower. That's because AS works as just another layer controlling the data transfer, thereby slowing the process. When you use Card Export, only the regular explorer.exe process is used for tranferring the data.
- Chipset limitations:
It might be that the Qualcomm chipset has a slow MicroSD and USB controller. Manufacturers also have to choose between better battery life or more speed. Mostly better battery life is chose, thereby bringing down the speed.

My old Dell Axim x50v used to sync calendar/appt within 5 secs. But my tilt takes atleast 1 min everytime to sync calender/appt. It takes that long before the sync icon stops spinning and states connected. Do you guys have the same problem?
btw, transfer speeds for data are the same between the two pdas. its just the sync time.

It is always painfully slow to transfer files with activesync, not just the Kaiser but with all PPCs. As far as sync with outlook that is really poor with WM6 and Activesync 4.5. I think I read somewhere the reason is that activesync runs very in depth checks on changes and date comparisons resultuing in long sync times.

my main problem is not that the tilt is soo slow, but why is my sd card getting corrupted EVERY time i put it in my computer? when i copy a decent size file, all the other files are fine, but that one explodes its size like 10x and takes up 90% of the card. my only option is to format every time

weakest link set the pace
if usb2 is supported then there most be a bottleneck
elsewhere
it imho seem to have been an issue with every pda ever

USB to PC a Disk Drive mode

Hi There,
i have been searching for a while now but i could not find it anywhere.
is there a tool for the tytn II thats makes it possible to connect it to the computer and that you get a menu with the following:
active sync
disk drive mode
internet sharing
just like the diamond.
on my rom i only have these 2 options
active sync
internet sharing

That's because on the Kaiser nothing but the CardExport program manages to emulate disk drive mode.

Is the disk drive mode that CardExport gives you noticeably better than just exploring the phone when it's plugged in normally? I know when you do it that way it threatens to convert your files when you copy them over, but in my experience it never actually does.

The only time I used disk drive mode on my Hermes was so I could charge it via my PS3 usb port since I spend a considerable amount of time next to my PS3 (my ps3 is next to my theater chair since I have a 122" projection screen and the Projector and surround sound system - and PS3 - are next to the chairs in the back of the room.)
I haven't tried it on my Kaiser since when I got the Kaiser it came with another charger which I placed there so I don't need the PS3 to charge anymore.
I'd be interested to see if it would increase the transfer speed though.. my God is it slow..

There is one utility 'nueMassStorage' that is supposed to do this, however I can't get it to work. I have it cooked into my rom and it does indeed present you with the option of ActiveSync or Mass Storage when you connect it to a PC via USB. ActiveSync works as normal but unfortunately I can't get the Mass Storage to work - it appears as a drive but Windows can't open it.
Maybe you can have more luck with it? Its available here as an OEM package to cook into a ROM or as a .cab to install.

I think that's cooked into the HyperDragon III Raphael ROM.. I'll test it out later.. I only ever hit the active sync button since I don't like transferring over USB due to the ridiculously slow connection.

I'd like to know how they got this working? I have tried all the USB memory card utilities I could find (WM5torage, Card Export and nueMassStorage) and I can't get any of them to work. WM5Torage just doesn't work at all, Card Export & nueMassStorage seem to exhibit the same behaviour where they activate and Windows sees a storage card but can't access it (I think it asks if you want to format it). I have tried on 4 different Windows XP & 2003 machines and all behave the same so it is obviously the Kaiser (or the ROM).
I have MS Voice Command installed and I think I read that this might be the problem, however I gave up in the end and carry a tiny microSD-USB adapter on a keyring so I can at least get access, even if I have to take the microSD out.

Nope, nevermind. PLugged it in and it's just active sync or internet sharing.. I can't remember where I saw that... might have been another phone I was using.. lol..

i'm using softick's card export II ver3.15 with Win XP PRO SP3
it's working fine
CEII actually started kaiser support with ver3.12.....that was working fine too...
i'm on Hyperdragon's lite rom

I have Voice COmmand instlled as well, and Card EXport worked fine for me.. I used it as a thumb drive with ym car stereo (atleast during the free trial) and it worked great.. my comptuer saw the phone as a USB drive as well.... I got the stock at&t 6.0 rom with the bloatware removed and lots of extra programs isntalled... Running Vista ultimate x64 edition....

It's faster than Activesync indeed, and maybe more importantly doesn't require it to be installed on the PC you want to transfer files from, but it's still MUCH slower than putting the card in a reader. The communication on the Kaiser's USB is done at USB1.1 speeds (~800kB/s max while a card in a reader usually results in 3-15MB/s depending on the card and reader).

Yes this was my findings exactly. If you can use the card reader then do because nothing comes close in terms of speed.
