This will drive me crazy. I have had the button above the volume mapped to Voice Command ever since I can remember. Now for the Tilt, it is mapped to Push to talk which I will never, ever use and the button mapping does not allow you to reassign it. Does anyone know if this is possible with any of the button manager programs? Do I need to flash the Kaiser ROM for this?
Also, the 8125 had a feature where you held this button down and it would swap the sound over to vibrate. If anyone knows how to get this working on the Kaiser, I highly recommend it. Beats having to pull the phone out of the holster/case to silence it, especially in a meeting.
Search for the answer.... It is here.
tried searching on push to talk. searching on buttons brings back a ton of results, none of which are specific to this particular problem. any suggestions on where to search and for what term or phrase?
Update, I found one... over in the hermes forum. This would be a good addition to the cab list sticky now that more folks are getting the AT&T ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279585&highlight=push+to+talk+map
I'll update after I have tried it on the Tilt
PTTFix work fine per the tread reference above but even though it allows you to assign a program to press and hold, there is no program "per se" to enact the vibrate setting. I do see this option on the HTC Home Screen though so maybe it is possible to create a shortcut in the Program Files directory and call it indirectly. I'll try this later when I have some time, but if anyone else gets to it first, please do share. TIA
this will do it for you.
I was never a fan of PTT anyway... Thanks for the CAB Tim. Works like a charm. For those curious, the option to select Vibra switch will be found under Settings > Buttons. Remap Button 6 to Vibra (Switch).
Spoke too soon. The PTTFix cab showed the buttons under the setting window, but after setting them, it still brought up the PTT screen. I though perhaps it needed a soft reset, and after doing so the ability to remap the PTT button disappeared.
isdereks, did you try this on the Tilt or the Kaiser? I am thinking the latter, since the PTTFix.cab shows the PTT button as a second button 5. Perhaps this is part of the problem of why it looks like it allows the setting, but doesn't actually work.
Bummer. I am quite disappointed. On top of all the bloatware, you get a button that launches an app that immediately errors out as I am not a PTT subscriber. HTC and MS should be pissed that AT&T is making the iPhone look like a clear winner. Pretty soon Apple will be running comercials with the big bloated guy for the iPhone too.
Sorry forgot to mention that I did this on the Kaiser.
yeah the new PTTFix did not work on my tilt, but worked great on my 8525. I hope this gets updated for the tilt.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334759
yeah tried all that and the reg settings do not stay after phone is shut down.
Worked for me. You have to read the whole post.
For my own purposes as well, here are the consolidated steps to take. Until someone improves on this, I keep all this stuff in a directory so I can reconfigure my device as necessary. Here goes...
I think the trick is the PTT settings take precedence when the device boots up so delete the PTT registry settings under HKLM/Services/PTT. Delete the whole sub tree, then
From HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
Add a new key called "40C6"
Add a string under the key called "Name" with the value "Button 6"
Add a new key called "40C7"
Add a string under this key called "Name" with the value "Button 6 (hold)"
(Note, do not enter the quotes, thare are to delimit what belongs in the registry entry)
Go to the Buttons settings and assign a program to the new entries. I di Voice Dial and Vibra (Switch) from the link earlier in the this post.
Do a soft reset which will remove the PTT settings from the buffer and enable your key changes.
Thanks for all the help.
I'd say the only caveat is if you some day want to use the PTT features, it would be a good idea to take an inventory fo what is under the PTT node in the registry.
It worked "GREAT". Thanks and so easy even I could do it
Instead of deleting the "PTT" key, i suggest simply renaming it to "PTTbak". That way you can just rename it back to "PTT" if you ever need to use it.
Thats what i did, and it works fine.
BTW, excellent work everyone. After upgrading to the tilt from the 8525 i lost 2 side buttons (comm manager button and the PTT button)... now i've got at least one back!
Maybe someone could offer a suggestion. For the life of me, I cannot get the reg entries of 40C6 and 40C7 to stick. I am using PHM Registry Editor. I am powering down and back up. Anyone have any suggestions?

did you delete the ptt key? (or at least rename as was suggested above?)
if you did try using the phone for while after you make the registry changes - run some other programs - then power down
greg
Greg, I renamed it and then nothing would happen. no button map and no PTT action. I am about ready to give up. But I will try your suggestions. Thanks.
NOw I got the PTT action back (the PTT screen pops up) but I cannot get the the button to do anything. I made the hold vibra and the direct push VC. Now nothing happens. Not sure what I did wrong. Not a noob at reg edits and I don't see anything wrong.
Oh well, not that big a deal, but am still open for more suggestions.
i tried renaming the PTT registry key and it didnt work. actually deleting it worked.
REG PTT
After doing the reg posted above the PTT button is free but you will notice after you push it, before the new app assigned to it pops up you will see the ptt screen for a second. What if the phone things you are using the ptt function and not Voice command or Viigo like I am?
Hey there,
I'm having an issue with my TyTN II. It refuses to switch to 3rd party SIPs.
It would switch into the native SIPs just fine, I can use them and such, but I can't seem to use any 3rd party SIPs.
3rd party SIPs (CooTeck's TouchPal, PocketCM Keyboard) would install just fine, it's listed in the list of available SIP. However, it won't be loaded as a currently active SIP whenever it's chosen as active SIP. Instead, it would load up the Keyboard SIP.
I have yet to try it with Resco Keyboard Pro.
Have this issue as well, remember back in the day this behavior was due to memory issues....
The HTC SIP's work just fine however (Phonepad etc).....
I installed Developer One AccessPanel program which is a SIP (soft keyboard), then installed a FARSI soft keyboard, everything worked and I was able to switch between them, then installed another FARSI soft keyboard and that program prevented me from accessing the other two (same problem as yours). It all comes down to how well the soft keyboards are written. I can get it to work by removing the last soft keyboard.

I have about 50% free Memory. Without anything running (just active sync). I checked through the HTC TaskMan ver. 2 or something...

I use THIS FREE PROGRAM to solve that problem .. works well for CooTeck's keyboard and causes their keyboard to be the default even after a reset.
I have the same issue, it happens maybe twice a week. Usually a restart helps but it sucks because I need to wait at least 2 minutes before I can type in my preferred input method.
Why does this happen?
Thanks, that program did help me switch to a different keyboard, but it seems that I'd have to Reboot my device every time I want to switch into a different keyboard?
Again, the only problem only applies to 3rd party SIPs, switching onto the default SIPs would only take a fraction of a second.
Am I experiencing the problem described on that program's thread?
I guess what i'm trying to say is, I'm looking for a fix that will allow me to switch into different 3rd party SIPs with no delays/having to reboot, just as I could switch into the default SIPs.
I've installed PCM Keyboard and TouchPal. I've gotten each one to work at least once, but every other time selecting them brings up the standard Keyboard. This is very frustrating... I don't understand why 3rd party keyboards don't behave like the built-in SIPs.
I've been searching for a solution to this problem for hours. There are threads in many forums but none have real solutions. Has anyone here found a real fix yet?
Incidentally, I had the muns color keyboard on my Tilt and uninstalled it to try to eliminate any possible conflicts. However my standard keyboard is still colored. I doubt this is the cause of all the trouble just because so many other people have the same problem.
OK I think I figured some sh*t out...
I read in a few places that there may be a resource limitation at start-up preventing multiple SIPs from being loaded. It was supposed to have been fixed by WM5, so I had dismissed it as a possibility. HOWEVER, it's apparently still a problem in WM6.
Basically, the today screen plug-ins and your SIPs together compete for memory. I have PocketPlus running on my device as the only today screen plug-in, but that in turn loads a bunch of other plug-ins inside of it. I went into my today screen settings and disabled it from loading on start-up and did a soft reset. EVERY SIP WORKED! I then started the pocketplus today plugin and everything still worked... for a little while. After 10 minutes or so, TouchPal stopped working. I'm sure the problem will return whenever I reset as well, unless I disable my today screen plug-ins before every reset. GRR!
UPDATE: I used the Optimize settings for Enabled IM in SK tools, and disabled the ones I don't use. That seems to have had an affect. All my SIPS loaded after the past 2 out of 3 resets. This is almost definitely a resource problem, and not a conflict or a fault of any of the SIPs.

Yep, that is indeed the problem.
yep. Having that problem as well. I wanna unstall those built in sip that I don't use and wanna have 3rd party one as a default. I will have to try sluth's sip cab see if it helps me or not.

I did that already using SK Tools. I only have 3 SIPS now but they STILL don't all load on every reset. The only original SIP I kept was the keyboard because SK Tools does not let you delete the default, and when I try to change the default to a 3rd party SIP it warns me that it may lock-up my device. I read people have had to do a hard reset after attempting to change the default so I'm reluctant to try it.
It would be cool if there was a way to hack the allotted memory for SIPS and plug-ins. That's way over my head though.
some progress
I've made some progress on this front. I've got 3 third party SIPs installed and they seem to work all the time now. I did this by doing a hard reset on my AT&T Tilt and not letting it install the bloatware. (Never used any of it anyway.) I also disabled the SIPs I don't ever use with SK Tools. When I reinstalled my apps, I took care to install anything that runs during startup to the Device and everything else to the Storage Card. Finally, I tried giving my today screen plugins a low priority load order (also with SK Tools, but not sure if this had any effect).
I'm not sure which part of all that did the job, but I suspect it was just cleaning up the device which made it run faster and smoother, thereby eliminating the memory shortage and allowing the SIPs to load.
Good luck to everyone else experiencing this annoyance.
well, the fact you had to hard-reset it isn't cool. I might do that too, though.
I hate to be posting so much, but I know a lot of people have this issue so I'm going to continue to report my progress.
After installing a few more apps including Voice Command and a couple today screen plugins, one or more of my SIPs randomly wouldn't start again. GRR!
I discovered that if I remove the non-essential links from the windows startup folder, there was enough memory for the SIPs to all work again after a soft reset. I deleted sddaemon (smart dialer / voice dialer) because I have no need for it since voice command replaces it. That saved some RAM, but the biggest memory hog, Microsoft Voice Command itself, was still there. Moving that out of the startup folder is the key. It's not necessary at startup because it's mapped to a hardware button anyway, so you just have to hit the button twice the first time you use it. No big deal. I'd rather have working SIPs.
There's a small catch. Removing the shortcut in the windows startup folder is not enough because Voice Command reinstalls a shortcut to itself if you remove it. To get around this, you can hack the executable with a hex editor so it won't do this anymore, or more simply, change the shortcut to point to a different executable and then make it read-only so it won't be overwritten. I changed mine to point to spb services, which was a different shortcut in my startup folder anyway. As long as it's named Voice Command.lnk and it is read only, Voice Command can't sneak back in there.
Now all the SIPs work again even with all my new apps installed. Woo hoo!

From Vito Technology. Credit to 4WinMobile.com for the announcement.
Looks interesting. In the quest for the perfect SIP, this is another entry. I tried it. Its nice, but still the buttons are too small for finger use. Would be nice if it can be skinned. But don't think it can be...It comes with a 14-day free trial. Then its $10...
My views are very similar to those of Jomo25's. Tried it very briefly but was enough to conclude that it needs a larger button skin for accurate typing. The magnifier concept is though very good but can only benefiting if the buttons were larger.
So for the time being Cootek's TouchPal remains the SIP of choice as far as I am concerned
I installed it yesterday and already used it a couple of times. In terms of reliance, nothing beats the slide out keyboard. That said, I very much like the fact that the numbers are laid out at the top of the zoomboard, very much like the desktop keyboard. The set of symbols is more complete than the keyboatd that comes with WM6. Overall, preferrable to the native WM6 application.
A warning to other users:
Tried this keyboard on my HTC Touch for about 30 seconds, pressed the language button (en) and it froze my device, only way to reset it was to pull the battery.
My device was performing INCREDIBLY SLOW so I had to end up wiping the phone with 'Clear Storage' (took over a minute to respond to even using the start menu).
The program still has reminants left on the phone as it appears to install itself partially on the ROM of the device.

An app can't install itself in the "ROM", you have to flash to do that. What probably has happened is that the uninstall didn't clean out all the registry entries and there are bits of it left in there. You might try the demo of MemMaid and have it go through your registry. It may clean that part up.
vito tech is notorious for bad uninstalls. The image of the app was enough to get to me to click the link to see what it was, but as soon as I saw the Vito name, I quickly dismissed it. I haven't used vito stuff for a while so maybe the issues are not the same but after reading the above post about it leaving artifacts in the registry, well that sounds about on par with what I remember.
I installed it but couldn't get it to run on my Tilt. It simply refused to load up.
While WM 6.1 now allows for buttton 6 to be reassigned, any attempts to add 40c7 to the registry (Button 6 (Hold)) gets wiped when you do a soft reset. Is it necessary to kill the PTT key like we previously had to in WM6?
anyone tried this yet?
Well, its just easier to have a program that intercepts button presses. Such as... aebuttonplus! You can have double presses, long presses(hold) and etc. good software to check out.
Another solution is to just make a .reg file with desired entries and toss it into the startup folder, that way it will reapply on soft-reset. Goodluck!
Yes you need to delete PTT
This is what I found on another thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2573250&postcount=41
It fixed it for me.
is there a way that i can see the uptime of my Tytn2?
it looks like my tytn2 is (soft)resetting itself.
i had a few times now that i had to enter my PIN again. So when it happens again i want to look at the uptime.
Does anybody know if this is possible, ether by installing software or by default in Windows Mobile(6.1).
after some more searching i desided to look for a program to display uptime, pitty that windows mobile doesnt have it itself.
I tried 2 programms now, but they both are not giving the correct time after some time.
Till now i tried uptime meter and myuptime.
If anybody knows one that works correct with WM6.1!?
I used this for a long time: http://ae.inc.ru/uptime.php
AEBplus also has a "status" screen that will display it: http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php

I'll check this out too, I'm always curious how long the phone has been up myself. No negative effects from this program I assume?
I wrote a MortScript to record bootup time at startup, but never got around to writing something to then compare current time to the last recorded time to get uptime.

Never seen any... I've been using the Uptime plugin since my Wizard days about 3 years ago. Now that I use AEBPlus for my hardware key shortcuts I removed the plugin as it was redundant.
I find the "uptime since last full charge" even more interesting... and it has helped me troubleshoot problems with programs running in the background several times. Look at uptime, put phone in standby, wait 5mins, turn on and check again - uptime should not have changed, or at least a lot less. If it has, some program is preventing the phone from standing by...
At some point I found out S2U2 would cause the phone to log about 2 hours of uptime overnight, at least I could understand why my battery life had gone down and got rid of it...

Never used AEBPlus, does that allow you to "pop up" Today plugins at the press of a key? I discovered when I tried to install the program today, it doesn't show up in SPB Pocket Plus, and I have no room on my today screen outside of it. I could maybe do SecondToday, but that seems like a lot for this.. Oh well.

AEBPlus runs as a program in the background with program setup in start menu\programs, the program allows you to allocate up to 4 programs and functions like up time, backlight etc to hardware buttons, so you can map any program in start menu.
Just an eg as i have set:
Hardware key
Start:
single press: start menu
double press: Total Commander
tripple press: Task Manager
Longpress: Backlight
Internet:
Opera Mini
Opera Mobile
Skyfire
Uptime
Messaging:
Messaging
Mobilepad
galarm
Touch Calendar
OK:
Ok/Close
Wi-Fi
BT on long
PTT:
Taskfacade
Nodata
Sat Nav on long
So i hardly ever have to go anywhere near the Start\Programs group as anything else like Media is Start Menu.
All in all makes phone very user friendly

wth, HOW did I miss this program. I used to do exactly this in PalmOS, I think I could triple-load each key, but this you can do four actions per key. Now my problem will be forgetting which is which!
And what's funny is after I got finished setting all the overloaded applications on the buttons, I then realized "oh, this was to get uptime, where is that?" and finally added it to a button too.
Thanks!

Glad you like & got it tweaked, makes me wonder why M$ doesn't make things user friendly in the first place? "we all know the answer to that"
Know what you mean about forgetting, everything has become second nature to me now "mind u found it a test of mem writing it down"
Oh yeah in the install directory is a .cfg file back it up somewhere so if you ever flash again or have to hard-reset you don't have to set everything up again
Read first
little advice for those of you, like me, who like to download and install before reading. do not install the free version of aebplus on your kaiser, program won't work, and you will have to do hard reset to bring back some of your hardware buttons.
You need to use the current version (2.6.6), and simply leave it unregistered. I don't really know why he leaves that 4-year old 1.0.1 version available.
excellent, it works great, thanks.
AE Button Plus is nice, but it just causes problems for me. It's entirely possible that it's a combination of the other programs installed, but I'm having a few issues
Sometimes buttons are being completely ignored, or very slow to respond.
StyleTap doesn't receive remapped button presses at all
Scrolling with the volume button seems to randomly lock up the PPC requiring me to pull the battery (soft reset won't do)
Soft resets in general are very finicky, having to do them multiple times for the phone to finish booting
All of which went away after I uninstalled. Oh well... Maybe there's some alternative program. For now, I'm back to using the Buttons function in SPB Plus which allows me to add "Hold" to each button.

Strange i imagine it is something else that is affecting AEButton Plus, i'm running M2D the only issue did have was with regards to OK button, wanted to map long press to Wi-fi and double to BT for convienience, but found that Wi-Fi would be very much a pop shot on load but double press and all fine.

I wrote a mortscript that shows you the current uptime... it does exactly what your looking for without having to install a whole program to do it (assuming you have mortscript installed already)
