Which connection to my laptop gives the highest internet speed on my laptop?
(T-Mobile web'n'Walk: Down max. 64 Kbps/Up max. 16 Kbps).
BT or USB-cable? or is it the same?
If you are using a Kaiser, and have 3g coverage it should be a lot faster than that (like 15 times faster)...
I think BT runs at about 1mb per second - so if you have HSDPA - it will be about the same speed and thus neither will act as a bottleneck. If you don't have HSDPA/3G then it really wont matter.
Hi!
thire is an application on my Kaiser CD called 3gnetopt.exe, does this help to make the Kaiser a high speed modem?
If so, how is it installed?
Of to do some RFM-ing now and a search for 3gnetopt.exe here at XDA!
OK Got it ! here

Thanks for the answer... I won't spend to much time any more on practical tests.
I have a Vario III and I have 3G/HSDPA but ....T-Mobile limited the speed to Down max. 64 Kbps and Up max. 16 Kbps.. ....but the good news is that with this Web 'n' Talk Pocket Internet Totaal they do not have any "fair-use-policy"

Does anyone knows what's the actual wi-fi speed, wich the Kaiser is capable of?
If the hotspot speed is 25 Mbits/s etc., will the Kaiser suports that?
Can anyone compare the w-fi speed with SAMSUNG SGH-i600, on the i600 according to http://gsm.mag-city.ru the speed is approx. 1 MByte/s?
Thanks
Tried your posted site for speed test, but it's all in Russian ??? Anyone know of a mobile site for comparisons.
Use that url directly on the PDA device it will detct the speed via UMTS/HSDPA or WI-FI:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Ok I got 140 Kbit/sec and a .686s latency from The Netherlands on T-Mobile 3G.
You should not use 3G when testing the Wi-Fi speed.

oops missed that bit, got 1003 K/bits on that.
Is it rue that the wi-fi speed available on the PDA depends from the CPU speed?
Davebravey, how fast is your WLAN accsess is it as fast as the TYTN II WLAN adapter or faster (than 1003 Kb/s)?
My main connection is 6Mb/s - 768 Kb/s ADSL, Using a 54G WiFi AP and I was less than a meter away when i done the test.
Can you do the same test but on your PC web browser?
Is it reporting the same speed?
I mean the same speed as the TYTN II?
Doesn't work on my PC web browser, connections too fast
Choose the option "larger file->1 MB"
still too fast
OK thanks, anyway do you think your PDA is brawsing with slower speed than the one wich capable of-6Mb/s are enough suitable for the TYTN II's wi-fi?
I find it a little slower than my laptop when connected to the same router.
Happy to find this thread as I'm seeing problems with wifi speed on my Kaiser. It works ok when you're right next to the AP but speed quickly falls as you move away, say 10 meters or walk around the house if you look at the Wifi menu the level quickly falls and the speed drops down to 1Mbps (about 140kbps on dslreports). This is not the case with the old PDAs I have hanging around like the Axim X50, HTC Galaxy, HP 6915 or the Qtek 9000. And yes I pushed the wifi slider all the way left for maximum performance.
I'm suprised that no review (at least those I found) mentioned that or maybe it's my unit that has a problem. The "x" is shot on the keyboard so I need to have it changed, will report back with any improvement.
The good news is that HSDPA speed is good, 500+ on dslreports and bursts at 800+ using GPRS Monitor, but that won't help if you're abroad.
Why are you all so bothered what speed you are getting? LOL
You hardly need fast access for browsing or even streaming a video
Not sure why you bothered posting this, but obviously I bothered to post because it's a problem to me, like not being able to stream a 160kbps MP3 file where I usually do it with the old HTC Galaxy. Now if we can get back on topic ?
hello yall.
I'm experiencing the same problems with my kaiser (vodaphone branded v1615). i'hve checked my bandwidth being at 50 cm ob the router and and i've an average of 700 kb. being in my bed (approx 4 meter) it falls at 300 kb. The problem is that i can surf on the web being on my bed + i can't run viewerVnc to control my desktop. Anyone has any idea ?
I've been using my Tilt for tethering since some jerk stole my last laptop and made off with my Sprint PCS EVDO Rev. A card Until I receive a replacement I'm using the tilt. I've tried using the three methods above for tethering while in the car or on the ambulance (EMT here) during downtime. I decided to spend a few minutes doing some tests to see which is the most efficient, with pros and cons for each. Below are the results. Each speed test is the result of an average of 3 tests via speedtest.net I am on the AT&T network, in Atlanta, GA on HSDPA. The phone was locked onto WCDMA / HSDPA so there were no drops into EDGE. I used the wap.cingular access point. Phone was plugged into the 1A wall charger, with a high charge. Left the phone in the same place for all of the tests. Below are the results, for fun, compared with my Treo 750 via bluetooth.
Kaiser:
BT DUN:
Down: 991
Up: 321
Pros: Can start anytime from laptop without necessary interaction with handset. Speeds statistically same as ICS.
BT ICS:
Down: 1010
Up: 320
Con: Have to start program on phone that uses more RAM, connection doesn't appear as stable as DUN connection, program can end or hang.
WMWifiRouter:
Down: 1027
Up: 328
Pros: Most stable (IMHO) of the wireless tethering options. Slower lag/ping time. Speeds are just a touch better, not much different. Can share connection with multiple PCs. Range drastically better, better resistance to outside interference, and doesn't affect bluetooth headsets.
Cons: Causes problems with data connection being used from the phone (basically makes data connection unuseable on the phone side)NOTE: this applies to the freeware version only, it would appear they have solved this in the new trial version. Uses a LOT of power...when plugged into a 500ma car adapter, battery still drains, just more slowly. Charges VERY slowly over 1A charger. Heats phone / battery up due to high power useage. Program uses RAM more ram than other options because it runs ICS in the background on top of WMWifiRouter.
This is my personal favorite for tethering for long periods of time because its much more stable than it's bluetooth brethren.
If interested, can be found here:
Freeware, (older version):
http://www.freewareppc.com/communication/wmwifirouter.shtml
Current commerical version, in beta. Will be pay for use after beta.
http://www.wmwifirouter.com/consumer/
And just for fun, my slower, low-res but oh-so-easy-to-use-one-handed,
Treo 750:
BT ICS:
Down: 523
Up: 289
NOTE: For those not familiar, the Treo 750 w/ the official WM6 update is HSDPA but only has BT 1.2 instead of the 2.0EDR on our Kaisers.
Hope this is helpful to those weighing their tethering options. These speeds are for reference only, and are on the AT&T HSDPA network in Atlanta, GA. I used speedtest.net on an Atlanta server. I'm sure other test sites would've given different speeds, but the tests were really more for comparison than "I got XXXX KBPS with my kaiser".

Great article, I link to it from my related ones.
Question, are there any settings that need be tweaked to get version 0.91 to work? I get "connecting...WLAN is on! Waiting for ICS. I can see the WMWIFI access point and connect, but no data. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have ICS installed?
What version of skype mobile works on edge
and what is the rom that allows skype to connect easily
thank you for your answers
IT doesn't work on edge, it should even tell you that. Skype requires a lot of bandwidth to work there for it can't work on the slow edge connection.

**agree**
Ok, first of all its not the device that is causing the issue. Edge is a type of data connection that caps out max speed at about 384 kilobytes a second. Skype needs a faster connection speed than that in order to stream the voice data packets. 3G/ HSDPA is approx 1800 kbps. If you do the math, that makes edge more than 4.5 times SLOWER than 3G ( these are of course maximum theoretical bandwidth speeds in optimum circumstances obviously).
You will NEVER find a phone that can make the edge antennae miraculously make edge jump from 384 kbps to 1800 kbps, as at this point , thats the bottleneck ( the phone antennae as well as the tower )
Its literally like trying to take a 56k dialup modem and stream high quality video which would require a broadband connection........ it just cant handle the data packets in a timely manner.
If you need further assistance in understanding the simple concept of speed and connection type, i strongly urge you to use Google.
Hope this helped you in understanding

That again is due to the network not being able to sustain the data speeds necessary for VOIP. Just because it connected doesnt mean you had it working. I use skype all the time. If I am on 3G and drop to an edge signal, the call quality drops to inaudible breakups.
I answered your question in detail..... I dont see why you are trying to argue a point which makes no sense . If all you are trying to use skype for is typing chat, id look at some other messenger alternatives for skype that would work with edge ( try out fring )

I like the way you think.
I connected my Tilt to my laptop, and, using Internet Sharing, did speed tests on three different sites. I am using HSDPA. I am in Little Rock AR area and connected thru Dallas TX
Ping varied from 168 to 222.
My download speed was 1134 kbps.
My upload speed was 319 kbps.
Did I actually get the connection speed of my Tilt? Is this a good test/and results for the Tilt?
It sounds like that would give an accurate reading of your device's speed, but if you want to be sure, this thread has an excellent, free application to measure your speed in kbits/s.
Dave
Is anybody else having issues with low bandwidth speed when tethering? I'm on the latest Cyanogen build. I've tried both wired and wireless tethering, both have low speeds when being used. Normal I get around 300-500 kbps on my G1 but its only allowing about 20-50 kbps to the pc. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like EDGE speeds and not 3g.
I'm definately on 3G. I've had 3G in my area since Aug. Could it be the OS I'm using, windows 7?
how much data have you used for the month? i heard that if you go over your gb limit, tmobile will throttle you back. phone will say 3g, but you will be cruising at edge speed......
I'm not sure how check my data usage but I'm pretty sure its no where near the 10gbs allotted for the G1. With the speedtest app I'm gettin speeds between 400-500 kbps right now but when I try the speedtest website on the pc while tethering I'm only getting 30-40kbps.
