Low speeds on internet tethering - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anybody else having issues with low bandwidth speed when tethering? I'm on the latest Cyanogen build. I've tried both wired and wireless tethering, both have low speeds when being used. Normal I get around 300-500 kbps on my G1 but its only allowing about 20-50 kbps to the pc. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like EDGE speeds and not 3g.

I'm definately on 3G. I've had 3G in my area since Aug. Could it be the OS I'm using, windows 7?

how much data have you used for the month? i heard that if you go over your gb limit, tmobile will throttle you back. phone will say 3g, but you will be cruising at edge speed......

I'm not sure how check my data usage but I'm pretty sure its no where near the 10gbs allotted for the G1. With the speedtest app I'm gettin speeds between 400-500 kbps right now but when I try the speedtest website on the pc while tethering I'm only getting 30-40kbps.

3g Internet Sharing issues

I have the ATT 8925 and I use it to tether to my laptop.. Normal internet browsing is fine but for downloads of any size or for internet video including Flash it does not.
When downloading I average about 20kb and than anywhere from 1/4-1/2 the way through it just stops and times out.. This happnes on all downloads 100% of the time..
When trying to watch any form of streaming media including flash it will play for a bit and than stop and won't buffer any more of the media. I will have to reload the page and even then it's not guarunteed to work..
I used to have the 8525 and could watching streaming media through orb on my phone and computer with no issues.. So I'm wondering if it's the phone or if its the network.
I live in the north Seattle, WA area and am using Duttys Diamond rom.

This sounds like you're on EDGE and not on 3G. The other issues are linked, EDGE throughput and latency are highly dependent on network usage as data has low priority. If someone needs to use the tower you're on to place a call, that can put your connection on hold for minutes.
I've had to use my phone as only internet access for nearly 2 months, no 3G coverage where I live so I do know well enough what to expect... and would gladly do without it!
I am on the 3.5g network and HDSPA as well.. I notice a huge difference when I go back to edge in just page loading times.. Like I said page loading works fine.. everything else is crap.
My first suggestion would be to try flashing a different radio. I tether frequently with my Tilt, and I have not experienced these issues on AT&T's 3G network. My tethered speeds regularly exceed 1mbps.
On a side note: Make sure the proxy box is unchecked under MEdia Net, if that is what you are using to tether.
The box was checked... I'll see if it makes a difference when I tether again tonight.
Heres the specs using speedtest while on the 3g Network
IP Address: 32.157.xx.xxx (AT&T GLOBAL NETWORK SERVICES)
Last Test Date: 7/6/2008
Total Tests Taken: 1
Fastest Download: 96 kb/s
Fastest Upload: 112 kb/s
Average Download: 96 kb/s
Average Upload: 112 kb/s
I still have some issues when I go to stream or download where it will get like 30% through and than just time out indefinatly.

what is the signal strength like? the more bars your have the stronger your connection...therefore the faster your speeds.
Full signal strength.
Could this be some configurations issues? The network in the Pacific region? My plan it self?
Edit:
My page-loads are slower with proxy server off. I can try posting videos if you wish?
Removing the proxy did enable the weather plugin in Dutty's build to operate correctly.
Check out one of my earlier posts. I ran a test from Speedtest.net and listed my results.

I will try that radio when I have a chance to dl it tonight.
So I talked to ATT yesterday and they said it may be due to all the buildings in Seattle that the signal even if it's reporting full bars can still be degrading from bouncing around the buildings? Is this true?
Using this radio Radio
This is the result of my new speed test
Doing some more testing I'm finding out some more things.
1) My ping fluctuates between 200ms-700ms.
2) My ul is usually greater than my downstream.
3) A lot of times it says my test is originating in California.

Whenever I run a speedtest from my work or home PC, I always get routed to the NYC test server. But when I tether and run the test, it wants to route to to somewhere in the Midwest. I just override it and select the NYC server, so I would suggest you manually select the server closest to your physical location.
Have a look at my work's internet connection... minus the company name.
I still average speeds between 95-300ish.
I talked again with ATT today and verified I have the 3.5g network where I am.. I'm actualy in the heart of the network. They recomended changing the device. Now I just need to know how to get it back to the default radio, rom and spl.

Hi:
It's in the WIKI.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335568
I have never flashed my phone, so I am not an expert in that sense, but I believe that thread will give you the info you need
I found that thank you.. I'm still trying a few different radios with varying results though. I don't think I will replace my device I'm not that happy with it anyhow. I want the touch-pro when it comes out.
I finally got the speeds up to what they are supposed to be. I'm using Nikki radio 1.65.24.36

best rom and best version for skype on EDGE

What version of skype mobile works on edge
and what is the rom that allows skype to connect easily
thank you for your answers
IT doesn't work on edge, it should even tell you that. Skype requires a lot of bandwidth to work there for it can't work on the slow edge connection.

Ok, first of all its not the device that is causing the issue. Edge is a type of data connection that caps out max speed at about 384 kilobytes a second. Skype needs a faster connection speed than that in order to stream the voice data packets. 3G/ HSDPA is approx 1800 kbps. If you do the math, that makes edge more than 4.5 times SLOWER than 3G ( these are of course maximum theoretical bandwidth speeds in optimum circumstances obviously).
You will NEVER find a phone that can make the edge antennae miraculously make edge jump from 384 kbps to 1800 kbps, as at this point , thats the bottleneck ( the phone antennae as well as the tower )
Its literally like trying to take a 56k dialup modem and stream high quality video which would require a broadband connection........ it just cant handle the data packets in a timely manner.
If you need further assistance in understanding the simple concept of speed and connection type, i strongly urge you to use Google.
Hope this helped you in understanding

That again is due to the network not being able to sustain the data speeds necessary for VOIP. Just because it connected doesnt mean you had it working. I use skype all the time. If I am on 3G and drop to an edge signal, the call quality drops to inaudible breakups.
I answered your question in detail..... I dont see why you are trying to argue a point which makes no sense . If all you are trying to use skype for is typing chat, id look at some other messenger alternatives for skype that would work with edge ( try out fring )

slow tether

weather it be wifi or wired tether, it loads websites extremely slow, despite the fact of a good test speed on my phone, any idea of why this is happening?

Wifi thether or whichever cant procees your IC's full speed. The G1 is limited by the data chip inside, so internet speeds wil be slower then your desktop/laptop.
Same for me. I've done a lot of testing on this. Any sort of tethering, for me, will not yield xfer speeds in excess of about 700k. That's over USB or BT. My phone itself is capable of around 3000k on Wifi (using the Speedtest apk), but much slower through the browser. Max speed tethering over Wifi won't be known till T-Mo starts rolling out HSDPA. But based on the 3000k link over the phone's Wifi, I'm hopeful that a HSDPA-to-Wifi speeds could be in excess of 700k.

[Q] HD7 Wifi Speed

Hi All
Had my HD7 for a few weeks now and im liking it, used to be an IPhone user but thats all changed now.
One thing i want to know is that the HD7 is stated as having wireless N capabilities. When im on my wireless N network at home im getting really slow responses from the browser or when downloading apps from the market place (like im on GPRS or non wifi). I have a wireless N network setup and also have 50mb Cable so its not a problem with the LAN/WAN as i can download lightening fast with the lappy or even when i had the Iphone on the same LAN.
Anyone else noticed that the wifi is not very fast? Also is there a "speed test" app that can tell me the sorta speed im getting, used to be one on the Iphone, but obviously cant be flash based, which are most on the web. Did find one non flash based site but im not convinced its that good.
Any advise is appreciated.
I use tracert's non-flash based bandwidth meter and seem to get low reading as well. my max. bandwidth is 15 Mbps yet my HD7 usually tests well below 10 Mbps. Odd. In terms of downloads though, my HD7 is speedy. I downloaded NFS from Xbox Live and calculated it was downloading at about 1 MB/s (which is fair for a 15 Mbps connection). So maybe the speed tests are off.
no problems for me.
It's weird that on IE on the HD2 you could use speedtest.net to test speeds, but on the hd7, it says you don't have the proper flash installed....
Hd 7 dosent support flash yet, maybe with update next year.. as far as I know this is the best device for my wifi although its not N
Hero used to struggle with my wifi but the hd 7 is super brilliant..
Just love it on this one
No problems here. And when it comes to browsing this thing is a pure joy ! Imagine when they will update the browser with Flash 10.1 and overall speed. I browsed today a little longer then usual and when I got home and turned my PC on it all felt boring. This is the first time I am experiencing a far more enjoyable browsing on my phone rather than my PC.
They have done an amazing job
mmm must just be mine then, an app from marketplace on the phone took about 3 minutes to download while on wifi and its just a small notes app. Weird! Ill keep having a look at whats going on.
It's surely something with your phone or with the WLAN. When I am home I am browsing only via WiFi and in my room I only get low signal but even then it runs pretty fast.
I have to disable cellular data and 3g to make my WiFi fast on my hd7. I'm on tmobile and in an edge coverage area. It seems that the phone prefers cellular data over WiFi even when there is a clear speed advantage in WiFi.
I have experienced zero problems with the HD7 over wifi. This is also with T-Mobile coverage in an edge only area. Settings allow for all network types including 3G.
Well im surprised because my experience in Puerto Rico with the hd7 on the internet speed its noe the best.
When use the app's for speed test never come colse to 1 mega and the faster speed its around 400 kpbs its T-Mobile or the phone really i'm think its the phone because my wife have an Lg optimus with android and the same t-mobile but the speed its around 1.2 and 1.5 mbps so if any one have the solutions wow i'm apreaciate to hear about.

Data throttling glitch

Could anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can reproduce it manually? I have a go phone plan, 45 a month. I get 1.5 gigs of high speed data, then after that it is supposed to be throttled unlimited. Recently, after hitting my limit, I was throttled. But sometimes, I'm getting up to 30 megabits download, rather than 128 kilobits, like I should be getting. I thought it was because of a VPN connection, but apparently not. I don't think it's the type of connection either. I've had it on lte and hspa+ connections.
