I think my phone is on its last leg. The screen has just recently become unresponsive. However, the hardware buttons (minus power) and the keyboard all still function.
I would try a reinstall of a new ROM to see if it is a hardware or software issue, but here is my dilemma. I am unable to connect to ActiveSync, so I am unable to get any contacts synced with my desktop and there were several new contacts from my last sync that I don't want to lose.
So, does anyone know of a trick to get the information (PIM is all I care about) off of the device even though ActiveSync isn't working? There is the PIMBackup (v1.9) program that I already had installed, but unfortunately it *requires* taps to activate. D-Pad and/or keyboard navigation does not work, so I can't backup to an SD card.
FYI, I'm using Helmi_BA_WM2k5_AKU3.5_v1.4.CF2 ROM if that helps.
Any help is greatly appreciated as I cannot make outgoing calls until this is resolved.
I'll try a ROM reflash as a last resort, but I would really like to be able to backup first. I'm even willing to mess around with hardware if people could walk me through it.
why can't you use activesync?
It says it cannot recognize the device. This is a somewhat recent happening, but not direclty related to this failure as that stopped working last week. I made the backup last week and never got around to investigating further.
Unless someone has a really great idea worth waiting for, I'm going to open it up when I get home (no tools small enough at work) and make sure that all of the connections are good. If that doesn't solve it, then I'm going to try reflashing a new ROM. If that doesn't work, then I've got insurance on the device (through Sate Farm) and I'll have to see what my options for repair/replacement are.
Hope it doesn't come down to it, but does anyone have any experience with phone insurance?
Would this work?
I just came across this thread/utility which will dump the entire ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=238945
If I were to dump the rom, could someone with a "working" device upload it and then extract the PIM data (using PimBackup, whatever)? If so, I would be very grateful, heck I might even send some $$$ via PayPal.
Are there any other solutions?
Ok, I just got through disassembling the device and making sure that all of the connections were tight. Still, the touchscreen is unresponsive.
I've got ROM dumps, so if someone would be so kind as to flash those ROMs and extract the PIM data, I would be very appreciative. I don't want to just post the links for everyone to be able to download (since it does contain all of my information). If you would be willing to do this, then I'll give $20 via PayPal or another payment method. Either post here or PM me if you are interested.
Thanks,
Jonathon
have you tryed backup solutions like sprite backup or spb backup ?
I have not. I'm assuming that I would have to use the 2577 trick to install the program. Do you know if you can operate those programs without a touchscreen?
Someone tell me if I am wrong but only copying the file \pim.vol should be sufficient for backing up all PIM data. You can do this with Resco explorer, it can be controlled only with keys I think.

It is getting increasingly temperamental. Do you know if you can extract that from the ROM dump files? If so, can someone at least point me in the right direction as that would be much appreciated.

Have you checked your USB cable, or tried to sync via blue tooth?
I had a similar issue. Every time I'd plug the phone into any computer, it would say that there was an error with the device and would not do anything with it.
It turned out that I had a broken wire in my cable. I replaced that cable with a working one (sacrificed a very old smart media card reader), and I was able to sync it.
From there, it was easy to pull the digitizer settings into a file (found a free program that was designed for people who have vision problems), flash the phone and reset the old settings as my touch screen is cracked and a manual alignment will not work any longer.
Plus, there are 'remote control' programs out there for WM that let you use it, even with a dead touchscreen.
No, I haven't checked the cable but I'll see what i can do. I don't currently have a computer that I can sync with Bluetooth, but I'll see if I can't get that working as well. I've already got 'remote control' programs installed, so if I do manage to get ActiveSync running, then I'll be golden. Thanks for the input.
Does nobody know if you can extract the pim.vol file from the ROM dump?
Just Sharing :
My friend have similar problem. Both of us use BA. Our Solution was :
- My friend have a PIM backup using SPB Backup (exe files)
- I ran the exe file in my BA to get the PIM
- Sync it to my PC and save the PIM with MS Outlook (pst file)
- My friend can open this pst file on his PC
I got it!!!
Here is what I did. Note, you can remap the softkeys to hardware buttons, so at least a few more commands are available.
First, I installed Pim Backup
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1806
Then I installed Resco File Explorer. I was able to put the Pim Backup executable on the storage card and run it without using the touchscreen. I stored the backup on the SD card, then just ran restore on a different device.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
Good to hear that you were able to backup, but were you able to do something about the unresponsive touchscreen?
Concerning the touchscreen, I am wondering if it isn't a software issue. It comes and goes, but interestingly enough there are certain things that seem to trigger it more than others. For instance, directly touching the Today screen will almost always lock it up and then nothing responds. However, other applications seem to work fine for brief periods of time.
I have just been swamped and a little hestitant to try reflashing to a new ROM. However, you can still navigate most applications (especialy basic ones) by just mapping the softkeys to hardware buttons and using the d-pad and keyboard.
Has anyone else had a similar problem in that the software was locking up the touchscreen? The only reason (other than being busy) is that if it is hardware then I won't be able to even get past the setup portion. I can't connect via ActiveSync (again making me think it is a software issue), so some types of backups are just not feasible. Oh yeah, I did try a different sync cable and it didn't work as well.
I'm getting to the connection page but then it goes back to the sign in.
Working great on my phone.
can you attach the ractrl.cab you used?
Never used one, basicaly i went to the website on my phone and logged on and it asked me to register my phone. ( am an existing user btw on Imate K-jam). Software downloaded automaticaly if I remember rightly.

Just tested it and works nice.
Downloaded the RACtrlCE.cab more or less automatically. And then continue...
The only thing that makes me doubting is, that I remember I tested it before on this device. I threw away the RACtrlCE.cab from my documents folder.
Maybe not allowed to throw it away? I will test in the future.
But: Works perfect and the scrolling, by pointing in the corners, goes faster than on my Qtek 9100.
I miss the larger real estate of course.
Huib
I must have used the old RACtrlCE.cab because when I uninstalled it and tried again it worked.
Your in luck mate, I found the file. But I cant find away to upload it here.
yeah, connecting to logmein and installing the cab directly from website works great!
Sorry to revive this old thread but I found it to be inconclusive.
I have the same problem as the OP: I login to their website and see my list of computers...from that point on anything I click, be it a computer or the "my accounts" section, it brings me back to the login screen. It's a complete loop.
I've been using logmein a long time and I know that the .cab file is downloaded right after you choose which computer to connect to...but I can't make it that far on my AT&T Tilt. It's just a loop.
I went back to my PPC-6700 (HTC Apache) and used my WiFi to connect to logmein and had no problems whatsoever.
Any suggestions? Should I find the .cab on my 6700 and send it to my Tilt?
Thanks in advance.
I'm impatient so I went ahead and copied the .cab file from my 6700 to my Tilt...the result is the same.
It installed fine: no errors, no message that it was made for a previous version of windows etc.
However when I go to logmein.com and try to login, I am confronted with the same loop as described above.
When you log into LOGEMEIN it will prompt you to d/l the .cab file if you dont have it installed. I had no problems in logging in from my 8525 or TILT.

Like I said, I can log in fine. Upon choosing which computer to connect to, it brings me back to the login screen. Typically, you would choose the computer you want to connect to and then it would realize you don't have the program installed and prompt you to do so. However, whether I have installed the .cab manually or before doing so, I cannot get this far.
I got my Tilt yesterday and the only tweaking I've done is with the KaiserTweak program from these forums. If anyone can point to a specific tweak that might effect this, I'll revert it...
After more testing I found a way to get access to my computer. Instead of clicking on the computer name, click on Edit. Then scroll down to where it says "Status: Online, Connect to this computer" - You can click on "Connect to this computer" and it will work.
After making it work I went back to my computer listing screen and tried to click on the name, as usual, and it went right back to the login screen. At least this workaround seems to work fine. I'll try uninstalling the software now and letting it install on its own and see how it works from there...
After uninstalling, rebooting, testing, reinstalling, rebooting and testing some more...I have been unable to replicate my "workaround" from above. I'm left clueless as to what the problem is here and whether this is just some dumb server problem on logmein's side. If anyone can help please chime in. tyvm
On a Tilt try
Start>Programs>Tools>Proxy manager>disable proxy
Worked like a champ for me
Those having problems; are you trying to access logmein using the full web site - https://www.logmein.com or logmein for PDA's https://secure.logmein.com/pda/ ? The full web site gets me in a loop, but using the site for PDA's works perfectly.

Yeup forgot to mention that. When I log in I disable the proxy.
If i remember correcly, i had this loop problem when using opera on the kaiser to surf on logmein.com .
Used PIE instead and no more loop problem.
Thank you for the proxy fix - it worked for me.
Can someone tell me what the proxy is for and if there is any reason I would need to enable it again? I'd like to know if I should bring this to logmein support or not. Thanks.

i think its for cingular's internal sites...like ringtones and that kind of madness. i doubt you'll ever need it.
This is not even related to PPC's just thought i would ask here as well. Today on my computer at work i found a wired process that i had never heard of befor. BSFC.exe. it has itself in the startup folder for all users and even if i delete it it comes back...anyone ever heard of this befor? i'm thinking it's a virus since it keeps coming back. Tired googleing it but came up empty. i have it blocked from runing using mortscript so it can't start but something still keeps putting it back in the startup folder...any input?
thanx for the reply mike but i had already found this and this is not it cause i never downloaded that prog nor is the file in program files....i tried searching on google and mcfee and norton but can't find anything about it. as i stated it keep placing itself in the windows startup folder...even if i delete it it comes back
back...this might be worst than i thought...it seems to be tide to outlook express...every time i launch outlook this bsfc.exe launches as well
Very suspicious. Have you tried uploading the file to http://www.virustotal.com/ and/or http://virusscan.jotti.org/ ?
I recently called in a warranty for my tilt due to a broken screen. They shipped a new one, and low and behold it had 6.1. I didn't think I could mess up my phone by installing a theme .cab that was made for a different version of windows, but I did. It rebooted five to six times, and after that it would either stay turned off or on. When it was on, the touch screen was unresponsive, as well as the hardware keys. I called the insurance and they said they might have sent a defective phone [didn't say anything about the .cab file hah], and now I'm back where I started.
I'm scared if I install old .cab files I will have the same situation.
Will the KaiserTweak.exe still work well with WM6.1?
This might be a little far fetch to hope for, but will this theme work for the tilt: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366521
If not, am I able to use old themes for the diamond without being stuck in reboot?
Another problem I've found is I'm unable to edit the windows of my phone folder on my computer. I'm wanting to do some heavy changes, and it's easier to navigate on my computer. The error message I get when I try to copy/paste clock images is that I don't have permission to edit the files. Is there a fix for this?
I ran into the same problem as you at first. I ended up using the HTC Home Customizer to set any changes theme wise and that did the trick. As for the Kaiser Tweak, it does work with 6.1 and I have used it quite a bit to unlock some of the limitations of the Tilt. Another option would be to use the Advanced Configuration Tool, from Julien Schapman. It seems to work pretty good too and works well with 6.1. For the locked file problem, I have not run into it much, you could try and use MyMobiler to remote to your phone so you can use the mouse to move things around. Hopefully that helps.
I found the black theme I was looking for here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364541
I still have the "cannot copy "'HH_HOME_0':Access is denied. Be certain that there is enough free storage memory, that the destination is not write protected, and that the file is not currently in use" As well as unable to edit it from my computer.
It's not in use because I disable the HTC home plug in, so it's not showing up on the today screen.
Same deal, i had 6.1 on the new one, and it took some doing to get hardspl to take on the phone. Also the bloatware just kept coming back no matter what i did. The window on the bloatware reset is like 1 second now w/ 6.1. It loads it so fast.
Hi!
I need any ideas about how to approach problem from subj.
I got Diamond with screen physically destroyed, but phone booting up and can make/receive calls ok. All I need is get pim.vol out to restore all contacts from it. Biggest problem is that phone was set into StorageMode (Cardreader) by default, so it is not even asking when plugged in to PC.
Any ideas on how to make it into ActiveSync mode w/o hard reset and losing all contacts?
[edit]
More I think about it now, I probably can create 2577 (or whatever number works on Diamond??) folder on storage card and put autorun.exe (MortScript probably) into it which will enable ActiveSync. Can someone with Diamond handy find out which values in registry do that?
Thanks!
You could use MyMobiler to access it using PC, but it needs active sync :S
All the ideas I could have need to access the main memory.
Hi
I wrote a program which copies pim.vol to the root of the Internal Storage.
Simply extract the zip after connecting the Diamond (make sure it is unpacked with folders!) and disconnect the ppc. Wait a while, then connect again. You should be able to get pim.vol to your computer.
Its worked!
Thank you so much, kosherpig!
Its worked and I got all stuff restored! Awesome!
Extract data from device w/ dead screen?
I'm not really concerned about anything but the pictures and videos which were stored in device memory. (When it started acting flaky I immediately copied my SD card but I couldn't get it to mount properly before the screen went totally black).
So, the device is not mounting when I plug it in but it is sending/receiving phone calls.
Can I write a script that would allow me to "force" it to mount so I can see the device's internal memory?
kosherpig,
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! with the use of those 2 zip files, i was able to retrieve my pim.vol file from my broken diamond. you dont know how long and despondent i was over the thought of not being able to retrieve all my contacts...this def teaches me a lesson to backup my address book religiously. thank you again!
Could you not use the start key & d-pad to toggle to activesync for USB mode in settings & then using mymobiler you would have full control of your Diamond via connected PC !

Hello, I've got the similar problem as the orignal poster.
My phone is HTC Touch HD running WM6.1
The touch screen became unresponsive to touch (tried a bunch of stuff to fix it), but showing everything just fine.
So I settled with that fact that it's going to the trash bin and decided to figure a way of getting my contacts out.
The device is set to run in Storage Mode upon connection to PC, meaning it can't Active Sync.
I can't see any Pim.vol in several browsers and managers, from regultar win explorer to total commander. It shows Album.vol file tho.
I've copied the files provided and everything would be fine.. but the phone asked for confirmation if I want to allow running that programm. I would have pressed YES, but... I can't.
Is there any sane way to bypass that confirmation? Thanks in advance.
Hey kosherpig,
I copied the Zip files and extracted them in the root of storage card of my WM6.1 ASUS p750. disconnected the USB connection and connected again, No hopes for the PIM.VOL.
Did I missed something in this...I am in Serious Trouble as My 7 years ongoing contacts are on stack with this Dead screen phone..
Please Help..

Hello. I have the same problem here (can't click on "yes" when prompt to execute). Is anyone has a solution for this issue ?
